In many cases, it’s a valid account number and routing number, and they only find out it’s fake when the person who actually owns that account comes back and says “this is fraud“. Then that person‘s bank returns the check. It’s not just a matter of NSF or not NSF. There are a lot of things in place to try to prevent fraud, but it’s not perfect.

In the simplest terms. The scammers send you a check for $2,000 for example. Then the scammers ask you to send them back $1500 and keep $500 as your payment. You send $1500 right away to them. Then the check the scammer sends you bounces. Now you’re on the hook to repay the bank back the $1500 you sent the scammer.
Never accept money order, cashier cheque, personal cheque, from stranger as legitimate payment.

I was hacked they sent me q check through the mail with instructions I tore it up vut still kept the evidence don't know who to talk to about it
Check for “non negotiable” words on the check. Real ones have that. That’s one way to tell.
No. Non-negotiable means it isn't a check and you can't cash it.
