Forney, TX Train Crashes Into Truck, Aug 1929
      Submitted by Stu Beitler
Texas | Train Wrecks and Accidents | 1929
13 MEMBERS OF TWO FAMILIES KILLED BY CRACK TEXAS TRAIN.
TRAIN HAD APPARENTLY STOPPED FOR SUNSHINE SPECIAL, THEN LURCHED FORWARD ONTO TRACKS, EYEWITNESS SAYS.
Dallas, Aug. 12 (AP) -- Joyously returning from a holiday in the city, 13 persons, members of two rural families, were killed by a fast passenger train at a grade crossing near here last night. A 14th was in a serious condition in a local hospital today.
A truck bearing them home from Dallas was struck by the Sunshine Special, Texas and Pacific train, and smashed.
      The dead:
      MRS. IVA BADGETT, 45.
ERA and VERA BADGETT, twins, 22.
      TEXAS BADGETT, 15.
      EMMA BADGETT, 19.
      BIRDIE BADGETT, 8.
      JESSIE BADGETT, 7.
      MARY JOE BADGETT, 3.
      E. F. McHENRY, 53.
      MRS. ANNIE McHENRY, 43.
      BEULAH McHENRY, 14.
      EMMA McHENRY, 10.
      BILLIE McHENRY, 4.
MARY LEE McHENRY, 17, was seriously injured.
A coroner's inquest at Mesquite was set for today.
For hours after the catastrophe, which took more lives than any other of its kind in Texas history, the torn bodies lay in a heap on the floor of an undertaker's establishment at Forney, Texas, while officials sought relatives of the victims in efforts at identification.
What caused the machine to jump into the path of the locomotive was not ascertained immediately. Claude Chapman of Mesquite, said to have been a eye witness, declared the truck was halted as if to await a train and then dashed on.
      G. W. Garrett, a farmer living nearby, said he saw the train splinter the truck, which belonged to BADGETT, but could not tell who was driving or the reason for the collision.
The crossing itself was rather high and on a side road just off the Mesquite-Forney highway.
The Texas and Pacific company today started detailed investigation of the accident one of the worst grade crossing crashes in the hostory of Texas.
Engineer J. T. Vawter, who was in charge of the train, declared that he blew his whistle and it looked as if the truck had stopped. Suddenly, he said, the vehicle seemed to have leaped upon the rails in front of his train.
He said the passenger train was brought to a stop as quickly as possible without danger of buckling and causing some of the coaches to leave the track.
Passengers piled out of the train as soon as the cause for the sudden stop was learned and several women fainted as they viewed the badly torn bodies along the right-of-way.
A member of one body was found lodged on the front of the locomotive where the pilot was knocked off by the impact. The vehicle itself was stripped of its body, fenders and other parts. A body was seared badly when the remainder of the machine caught fire.
Sheets were obtained from the Pullman cars and the bodies were gathered from along the right of way ahd those of the McHENRY family were taken to Forney while the BADGETT family victims were removed to Mesquite.
Funeral arrangements for the victims were being completed today. The bodies of the McHENRYS will be taken to their old home in Paul's Valley, while members of the BADGETT family will be buried at Long Creek, near Mesquite.
The worst grade crossing accident before yesterday's in late years in Texas occurred near Round Rock in which 11 members of a Baylor university basketball team were killed.

The term "hot box" actually refers to an axle bearing that has run dry of lubrication which would then overheat. It would not be caused by a flat spot on the wheel. Something is not right about your description of the derailment and why it happened.

The term Hotbox describes a situation where the bearings surface has run out of lubricating oil and generates a great deal of heat, begins to smoke, and ultimately catches fire igniting the "not so anymore" oil soaked rags inside the bearing house. A wheel with a large enough flat spot on it that prevents it from turning is not called hotbox.

  • @ffjsb
    @ffjsb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A "hotbox" is NOT from flat spots on wheels, it's from the heating of a failing or failed axle bearing. If a flat spot causes a wheel to stop turning, there would be heating of the wheel on the spot where it's sliding on the rail. While that could cause a derailment, it's not the same as a hotbox, so named for the box on the trucks that held the journal bearing and oil in the old friction bearings, and carried over to the roller bearings now used.

E9 units have 567C engines in them. I've seen E8 units that had B and BC blocks in them plus ACL 501 at NCTM has a pair of 567A engines I believe in her. Also E units ranged from 1800hp (thus the E designation) on the EA/EB units all the way to 2400 on E9 units. And even if the unit was at least running but isolated, and the reverser switch gear unlocked it still wouldn't have had a working locked axle detector system because the prime mover for that particular axle would have been isolated anyway unless it had some sort of "aftermarket" locked axle detection system added later.

The City of New Orleans is a service with a pretty poor history, I seem to recall that was the train that went into the bayou after a barge collision knocked one of the bridge decks out of line in conditions of heavy fog with a large loss of life. In that case it rather seems the strength of the coach windows may have led to increased loss of life as passengers were unable to break the windows to escape the sinking coaches...

Thank you Siren! LIRR Kew Gardens crash of 1950? It was the second deadliest in New York's history. I don't know the first crash. Again good stuff, and if you want to make it, it would be cool to see the Kew Gardens crash in the next five years or so. Thanks!

I grew up in Salem. My dad was an Illinois State Trooper and was the first emergency responder on scene. A family friend was farming near by and witnessed the derailment and called for emergency crews. This video does a very nice job of detailing the technical issues that caused the wreck. There is another story to tell about the impact of the derailment on the town of Salem, I’ll. Salem was a small town of roughly 6000 people in 1971. It didn’t have a local trauma center with capacity capacity to handle the casualties; 11 killed and 163 injured. But the local Civil Defense Unit, first responders and medical personnel did a miraculous job of triage and saving lives. Civil Defense was an active organization and partnered closely with government and healthcare officials to prepare for disasters of this type. Salem sits in what is known as Tornado Alley and much of the prep work was in anticipation of a tornado. And for the record, Tonti is pronounced with a long I. Truly appreciate the work you’ve done.

Despite the crash, Amtrak was still going with success even up to this day with their amazing trains. 1971 is also the year where my dad was born as a surprising part I want to tell you all. But anyways I’m still glad that the locomotives are still being maintained well for service for Amtrak trains.
