Idk why but when I first started training with this chain whip, I had no fear of getting hit. I picked up the basics very easily and am now progressing with these videos.

the biggest drawback with this weapon is that you are locked into your movements. once committed you are set in your course for a full 1-3 seconds. this can be best demonstrated by getting a friend to throw tennis balls at you and seeing how many you can deflect. A fantastic intimidation weapon and i love it

Hey Jake. I randomly came across your channel while searching around for gardening videos. I have a rotator cuff tear from an old weightlifting injury, that has put me out of commission in terms of working out, for years. I had been using the stretchy bands to strengthen my rotator cuff muscles, but it was not working. When I saw one of your old chain whip videos, I thought that it would be a good way to strengthen those muscles without inflaming the injury. I was right! My shoulder pain is now gone, and I am even lifting again, cautiously. I learned all of the moves from your vids, and then bought some Chinese DVDs to learn more moves (thanks for the eye protection/mouthguard advice it has saved my ass on a number of occasions). I've now become tolerably good at the weapon. She's a cruel mistress, especially at first. You either learn to do it right, or you experience a buttload of pain. But once you get it, it's fun being safe inside the eye of the storm while a steel Tasmanian devil spins all around you. I really just wanted to thank you. Your videos have actually changed my life.

  • @LenKirin

well theres a number of things wrong with this:
    1) when you do the butt jump, keep the chain whip on the floor instead of going up and down per jump
    2) your other arm is flailing stop
    3) your entire body bobs back and forth while moving the whip stop
    4) your rhythm in the movements have no slows or speed ups
    5) when you underarm change, use your other hand to swing the chain back to its original position
    just some feedback

DEADLIEST Weapon in Martial Arts - CHAIN WHIP. In Kung Fu, the Chain Whip (also called the 9 Section Steel Whip) is one of the most challenging weapons to master. The chain whip is a giant steel bullet on the end of a long heavy chain. The Martial Artist attacks with the chain whip by smacking, shooting, capturing, cutting, and/or crushing his/her opponent. Before we learn to shoot the chain whip we must first learn to spin the chain whip. The Nine Section Steel Whip of Chinese Kung Fu is my favorite weapon (the spear is my 2nd favorite weapon). Here is how I practice the spins of the Kung Fu Chain Whip! Enjoy and COMMENT BELOW..........

I keep having trouble shifting the whip to the other side of my body during an under the arm transition. I can do it fine when it’s over the arm and I turn it to my right side but the other way around has me a bit stumped. probably cause I’m expecting the whip to wrap around more than it should? Or is it that I’m trying to excel to quickly? Great video btw you definitely are very skilled and a great teacher I’m just watching from a small phone screen and slowing the video down does help my case much haha

Is a legitimate chain whip like that a bad idea for a careful beginner? Same goes for a lightweight small monkey fist rope dart (keep wanting to type lawn dart) ???
A lot of what I've seen in your and similar videos- wing chun demonstrations and most recently and very especially Wushu chain whip and rope darts seem like great meditative outlets. Also interested in more street savvy Kusari-fundo but with say a bracelet or some wearable that can be used for self defense. I'm in new york and am interested in finding some community perhaps. Just wanted to say I appreciate the arts and appreciate the videos.

Jake Mace is awesome. I`ve been watching his stuff for a while, typically with either his Tai Chi Chuan (Chinese Boxing) or his use of traditional Chinese weaponry.
Confessedly, of all the Chinese weapons, I prefer the spear and the three-section staff.
His videos on this chain whip and the three-section staff are wonderful: he`s obiously skilled, charismatic, down-to-earth, relaxed, dedicated and super-positive.
Watch Jake Mace. He entails the true optimistic and peaceful nature of K`ung Fu.

If you are ever rooted, it means to change, to move, you must pick up your root. That requires two moments. Imagine if you were in a gun fight and you point your gun away from the opponent. Would that not be a huge disadvantage? It’s obvious once you begin to understand this point that each and every split second must contain all of your gung fu. The split second. That rabbit hole will change everything you know about talu and movement.
