Exactly! Just watch his reaction for Mad max fury Road. He was soo passionate and happy to review that movie. You can tell he Enjoyed informing us on how great he thought the movie was!
Andrei Terbea 😂man I have the same mindset as film reviewers but by my channel name I'm apparently a film critic, all I wanna do is give my normal opinions on movies and let others have their own opinions, but I'm known as a "film critic" toward viewers😂
+Addy O If you like logical thinking, check out the youtuber I Hate Everything. I assure you, the name is misleading. He uses logic to pick apart things he doesn't care for, and it is entertaining as hell.
Are you insane,!?! ,🙄, Chris seems a nice guy, he's a movie fan who lives to " review " films and chat about them, can't say I know who he writes for , surely not the NY times or GQ, so IMHO he's done really well million subs well I have to tip my hat at that ,he's a movie fan and loves to talk about them and earns a living so BIG respect to him, BUT he's NO Mark Kermode or Rodger E etc, like Kermode is a member of BAFTA, I sometimes watch some of Chris reviews for a different angle, personally I'd like to see more independent films and Foreign language films , for me a little too much multiplex pop corn block busters, actually as writing this I agree what he says about trends and media hype ," Black Panther" , good film But it did better than it should because everyone jumped on the race issue ?? , Anyway respect for Chris success but can't say he's a mainstream critic maybe a TH-cam blogger !
9:00 I agree with you there! It doesn't feel right if I don't share my opinion about movies! Sadly, hardly any of my friends or family like to intellectually talk about them.
Chris Stuckmann I gotta say that I'm a recent viewer of your movie review and I gotta admit, your videos are awesome and very informative to watch. Alot of your instincts in movie watching and appreciation are the same as mine. Your attention to plot, acting, directing, writing, music score, etc. is very entertaining. Dare I say you could be the heir apparent to my favorite all time critic Roger Ebert? It's getting there with me. This video on the essence of film criticism/movie reviewer was in my opinion spot on. I can see people down the line, including myself, being motivated to become one just based on the information found in this video alone. In closing, I just wanna say I have now become an official fan of your work and I'm looking forward to your continued evolution as a film critic. If you're ever in the Tri-State area, I would be honored if we could sit and chat over a beer and just geek out on some movies and the experiences you've had trying to watch them (yeah, I saw THAT video too, LOL!). Much success to you from a true fan in lil ole New Jersey!
My definite favorite video reviewers: -YMS, mostly because of the fact that, while I do not exactly agree with his opinions all the time, he still knows what he is talking about, and it's always interesting to hear his opinions, as he also has a great knowledge in film moviemaking beyond storytelling. That, and he's pretty damn funny as well :P -Redlettermedia, because they always discuss a movie in detail, and they also seem very interested in talking about it. That, and their Plinkett reviews are nothing short of legendary. -Doug Walker, because his taste in movies is pretty damn mature, and his love for movies always shines through in his videos. And his Sibling Rivalry with Rob are like wathcing Siskel and Ebert.¨ -Chris Stuckmann, because he is the guy whose taste in movies is the one I identify with the most.¨ -Jeremy jahns. Say what you want about him, but at least he is down to earth and doesn't care what haters say about him. yeah, his favorite movies are usually the more mainstream ones, but he is still easy to identify with. -Confused Matthew. yeah, he is not uploading on YT anymore, and I have often found myself disagreeing and downright angered by his reviews, but he never lets hype and advertisement affect his opinion, and his Favorite Movies segments are always very well thought out. And he NEVER tries to tell people that they are wrong, but only to give objective, legitimate criticism. Some other TH-camrs I also like to watch: -The Flick Pick - AMC Theatres -Schmoesknow - Pretty Much It - JogWheel / MovieNight
***** Ok, woah. My mind went complete 180 on this guy, YMS. I saw his videos here and there, but decided to give this guy a better shot, and yeah he's a lot better than I gave him credit for. He does give legit reasons and I can tell he is passionate about films and not just doing stuff for entertainment like a lot of TH-camrs, and he definitely knows his stuff and deserves respect. And sometimes you need a guy to reveal some insecurities you have about your favorite films in order for you to understand this stuff better, so... yeah. Thought I should mention it.
Truly fantastic video Chris. Completely agree with all that you said and I'm glad you were able to band together a bunch of our fellow critics. I'm glad we all share this immense passion for film and I couldn't be more honored to put out reviews alongside yourself and the rest of our motorcycle gang of critics. Well done buddy!
Great video, and lots of wonderful insight here - especially love the (paraphrased) Ebert quote about negative reviews still being useful to fans of that work, that bit of advice has stayed with in all of my writing as well. Watched the whole thing - good job putting it all together - I only wish I was invited ;-)
Great video Chris! Please keep on making these videos debating different topics and film related stuff, like your video about directing action movies or the one about long trailers. It's great stuff and very very enjoyable to watch. Thanks for using so much time on this and I want to let you know it's really worth it!
Great video, Chris! Very insightful. I think about this kind of stuff all the time when doing my own reviews. Especially loved the bit about video reviews vs. written reviews, and how they're not in competition with one another. Keep up the great work.
I accidentally skipped ahead early on in the video and what I heard was, "I worked with mentally handicapped children...this is one of the hardest parts of film criticism."
Great Collaboration ! I was really happy to see Jeremy Jahns and the Schmoes chime in. I like to read written reviews on IMDB before I watch a movie in theaters because it is a fast, but after I see a movie, if I feel strongly about it, I love to watch video reviews to revisit favorite scenes and feel like I am discussing it with a friend !
This is hands down one of the most informative and thought-provoking videos I've ever seen on TH-cam. I only feel bad that it took me a year to discover it. Your work is truly appreciated, Chris. Bravo.
Chris, I can't thank you enough. I'm entering my sophomore year of college and I've just decided that this is something I want to pursue, starting with contacting my school newspaper to develop a potential column. Your advice is guiding me on the right track, and I'm much obliged. Thanks again.
Very informative video! I think I might be ready to start reviewing movies soon and this really helped me put film criticism into a perspective I'm comfortable with. Chris is honestly one of my favorite reviewers ever and this video only gave me more respect for him.
I find that actually writing a review is far more valuable in crystallizing my experience of every movie. Really taking the time to think about everything. Sometimes something I thought was okay, starts to really bother me, sometimes something I didn't much care for, I find out there was much more of value in it. / Also, from the beginning, I look at every movie's intention. If I think it communicated it effectively and responsibly, that wins a lot of points. The intention is huge. And if a filmmaker really knows how to manipulate and guide an experience...dude...the best.
The problem with videos is that they don't ever seem to be scripted. Besides youtube film critics, most of the people on this website should learn how to edit and not think jump cuts are a damn joke. All these jump cuts just suggest there's no structure to the review, whereas written reviews take more planning to do. Stuckmann doesn't bother me as he seems to only cut well compared to other people.
I really appreciate when a reviewer can offer a viewpoint on the many aspects of a film, not just a blanket statement of “this rocks” or “this sucks”. It shows a great respect for the effort those who worked on the film as well as a respect for the audience. And I also enjoy when I can receive more information regarding filmmaking while watching a review. It shows that the reviewer is knowledgeable and actually likes film. It also helps to understand the reviewer’s particular standpoint. This is why I knew instantly that I wanted to tune in to your channel. You are very competent reviewer and very enjoyable to watch!
Great discussion Chris, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. Applause for you. For your next one you could do it on he subjects of "How some CGI in movies has ruined or lessened the overall experience of the film"
I see people hating on CGI all the time, and it never makes any sense to me. Francis Ford Coppola has an interesting quote regarding some people's hatred for technology that actually advances the artistic qualities in film for illogical, perhaps nostalgic reasons. "There is a misconception that we are surrendering something of art to a technology that will do it for us. That is never the case. Cinema itself is technology, and to say that "oh, it can't be an art because it's a mechanical device rushing celluloid through it" is as naive as to say "well, now you can't create because now it's a computer rushing numbers through it." The technology is always an element of creativity, but it never is the source of the creativity. My attitude is to embrace technology as it comes. " ~ Francis Ford Coppola.
Sage Benner I agree with this quote but I I think Alex Sc was talking more about CGI, especially bad CGI, distracting a viewer from the story. In both I Am Legend, and The Mummy 2 the CGI for the villain was so bad it completely took me out of the film and ruined it for me. In these cases makeup, costumes, puppetry, and even lighting and sound effects would have been a better option because they would have kept the illusion going. In Jurassic Park, where most of the dinos were puppets, I completely bought their menacing presence and the suspense held for the entire film. Even in a newer movie like Inception, instead of using a CGI backdrop for the hallway fight scene, the set itself was rotated during the fight, it looked flawless and kept me engaged in the story. Point is, just because CGI can be used in a situation doesn't mean that it has to be used. I think that's the discussion the OP was suggesting.
Anjela Allen I disagree on some things you mentioned. Before I get to them however, let me say that I love Christopher Nolan and I think his choices for sets and props are awesome. I definitely agree that CGI should never distract from the story. Every decision made should advance the story. I'd also like to mention that although Stan Winston did some fantastic work on the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs you see on screen were just about entirely CGI. In fact, that was really one of the first great uses of CGI, and helped filmmakers to realize its potential. You also reference only a couple bad films as your reasoning for why it pulled you out of the movie. I could easily do the same with some films that made terrible use of practical effects, and there have been many. I appreciate you expressing your opinion to me, and I think you have some valid points, but I still don't see the OP's original post as anything but illogical. CGI is just a tool, and should be used as artfully creatively as any other tool in the film industry. I don't think it deserves the hatred it receives; more, it seems, than any other asset of filmmaking. Cheers.
+TimStarz04 I find that Gracie is one of the worst high radar film reviewers on youtube. She tries to sound like a news reporter, and has an opinion very different from the normal audience. A film reviewer should have at least some similarities with his/her opinion and the audience. She doesn't critique a film based on actual filmmaking, but her own personal opinion.
the majority of the time she gives good movies bad feedback, and bad movies good feedback. A few examples are when she wasn't completely onboard with guardians of the galaxy, but said fant4stic was pretty darn good. She didn't like the revenant or the wolf of wall street, but liked transformers age of extinction. She even wasn't a fan of deadpool, and said that the film spotlight had a lot of problems, whereas just about every other reviewer can barely find any problems with these films. Where does she even come up with reasons for her accusations? She just pulls them out of a hat and reads aloud to the audience.
Wow, thanks for finally making this video, Chris. You've really answered a lot of my questions about reviewing movies through writing and videos. I loved all of the videos submitted by other TH-camrs whom I have also watched. Some great points were made, especially, in my opinion, those made by Jeremy Jahns, Scott Mantz, and Alicia Malone. Thanks for giving us all insight on film critique.
***** To be fair, Nostalgia Critic is mostly based in Blip. (Plus, it's not like the Avengers can claim Spider-man, Wolverine or countless other popular and/or badass Marvel superheroes, so I think the analogy holds.)
Raul Mejia Nostalgia Critic usely reviews movies that are in the Nostalgia range. You get a review based on how history has judged this movie. He often uses humor that you can either agree or disagree with. At the end of his review he wil give you a personal opinion that often differs from the historical impact of the movie.
Finally got the chance to watch this and all I can say is thank you! So much great advice and insight into the perspectives of critics and reviewers of all shapes and sizes. Also, I must admit I was so excited when John showed up in his video contribution. You two are two of my favorite personalities of anyone I know or know of.
I came across your channel a month ago Chris. I enjoy film and have always enjoyed debating and discussing movies with others. It's always an interesting experience to have with people when talking about their thoughts and emotions when it comes to what they view in the theater or on TV. I was thinking today after I watched this video that the aspect of watching a movie reviewer on youtube and how that in it's self is entertainment and art as well.. is sometimes over looked. Thank you so much for what you do and always giving me an awesome experience while watching your videos. Keep it up bro!
What a great video! So many perspectives from very respectable people. As a soon to be film student, I appreciate this video a lot. Thanks to everyone involved, keep up all your great work!
Great video Chris, I might have tried to reach out to you on the comments section and twitter about the topic so I really appreciate this video. I've always been a movie enthusiat since childhood, my older sister brought me to my first movie "Pocahontas" when I was really young, but the movie that changed all for me was "The Matrix". I was still young, but I finally saw movies as art and realized all the work behind a movie when I watched the behind the scenes. Then I became passionate about movies and movie news in general. So I started buying movie magazines and reading reviews in newspapers. When the youtube boom happened, it was really good seeing movie lovers talking movies in a relatable way while being entertaining. I've subscribed to 10 or so movie reviewers I watch on a daily basis, not in order to know whether I will go see a certain movie or not. In fact I enjoy listening to people talking about movies. Then I started writing down my opinions about movies with a couple of friends. It was the best thing ever! Everybody loves to go see a movie from time to time. But these guys were movie fans like me. I could finally share my passion with people I knew in real life. When I review movies, I feel a lot like you guys: I don't bash movies I didn't like, I say what did work for me, and what didn't and since art is subjective, somewhere, someone will gladly disagree with me. And this is what I like about it: the dialogue. I also consider important the fact that you're relatable to the average moviegoer, because like some of your guests said, I'm a film enthusiast and not a critic. Therefore, I don't have film degrees to back up my opinion on movie criticism. I like me some pop corn flicks just as much as indy dramas. (However I do plan on attending film school classes eventually). The best reward is not be read (a lot/at all), I honestly think that my reviews aren't written in a really good way, it's rather like Alicia said: When people are searching for something to watch and ask you suggestions then come thank you afterwards. This is the best feeling in my opinion. Thank you for this video Chris. Have an awesome day and keep up the good work. Cheers!
Really love your reviews Chris! You, the Schmoes, Popcorn Talk, Collider, Jahns, SJ, you all have inspired me to go beyond and, not only watch you guys, but make my own movie reviews. Hope to be as big as you someday!
And THANK YOU about the reviewers who try to shove current day news and politics into movie reviews. I cant stand that. Go write for a politics/news blog if you want to speculate on that junk!
Hey Chris, I just wanted to thank you for this video and always being really open and honest with your reviews and yourself. I started my channel a few months ago without really knowing how to do what I wanted to do. You were a huge inspiration for me to become better and I just wanted to thank you for all that you've done for this community. It could have been really easy for you to just review movies and not get involved with those who watch your reviews, but you give back with videos like this, and that means a ton to people like me who want to get into this field. Thank you!
I really appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video. What I do on youtube is similar, but a little different. But i'm an avid movie goer. I never miss out on new movies and probably go once or twice a week to the theater. Keep up the good work! I always enjoy your reviews and find them completely honest and well though out.
Thank you, Chris, so much for making this video. It is so refreshing to hear someone I look up to and admire talk about film criticism in a very passionate and insightful way. I am a film reviewer myself. I have been doing it for over a year now and as much as Stephen King has inspired me to write horror, you and the others I have subscribed to, Doug Walker, Lindsay Ellis, Stupendous Wave, etc, have inspired me to chase my other dream of being a film reviewer. Watching this video has given me a lot to think about with regard to re-inventing my style and coming up with new and creative ways to present my videos. Much to learn, I still have, as Yoda would say, but I am enjoying every moment of the creative process. Every time I watch either yours or any of the other reviewers I have previously mentioned, I feel as if I am home again. That I am sitting at home on the couch drinking my coffee and talking about movies with like-minded people who I greatly respect. Thank you, Chris, once again for doing what you do best and for inspiring me to follow my passion. You are truly awesome and, of course, I"ll be checking out those who you featured in your video as well.
Hey chris, don't usually, but I was so inspired by this video I wanted to leave a comment, people think being a film critic isn't very important but they don't realise that it is how word catches on which makes somebody want to watch a movie. Critics are of course also enthusiasts which is what makes them compelled to write/give their opinion through a video. This is also what splits a movie critic/enthusiast from a normal person who watches a movie, they enjoy them so much they give their opinion to all those who want to know about what a movie is about and your opinion. Thank you. Keep doing what you are doing
Very intelligent video Chris. I agree with everything said here. Also in the words of John Flickinger I consider myself a Film Enthusiasts. Sure when I started I was sort of a Critic but I've grown with the times. And the only time I ever bash a movie is during my Stupid Movie of the Week! People tell me to calm down in those videos but they're missing the point of the whole video. That is the point of it lol. But I watched all of the Planet of the Apes movies. I watched several reviews on the remake from 2001 people bash it because it's a remake not looking at the point of the film. I watch it and after it's done I sit and think about it before making my video. I ended up liking it more because I saw it as a film not a remake. My point of movies today is simply watch them as movies. And as a movie Fan! I too have to Thank You Chris, Jeremy Jahns, The Schmoes, John Flickster for checking out my channel giving your time to appreciate the work I put into them. I especially want to Thank Roger Ebert & Richard Roeper because without them I wouldn't be here doing what I'm doing. =D
Chris Stuckmann, I have always enjoyed you as an entertainer and as a reviewer, but I can honestly say that because of this video, you are now a legitimate source of inspiration for me. I am majoring in Journalism because there's nothing that I would want more than to be able to write about my love for film as articulately and as professionally as possible. I'm currently using accounts on Letterboxd and Rottentomatoes as outlets for me to enhance my writing skills and my ability to formulate an opinion as concisely and as entertainingly as possible. Now whenever I write a review, I will be using this video for reference. I hope to one day be as influential and inspirational to someone as much as you have been to me. Thank you for "Stuckmannizing" me and for all of the work that you have done and will continue to do.
@Chris Stuckmann Once again you talk about something I was JUST thinking about. GET OUT OF MY HEAD! But really, I loved the part where you mention the grades and how just because someone gives a movie the same grade as another or other movies, it doesn't mean that they're on par with each other. People search for a movie to watch on a site and they think, 'If the movie isn't at least, three stars / an 8 out of 10 / a C+, then more than likely it's going to suck and not worth my time.' I admit I just found myself falling into that vortex. That's just one point out of many that you made me think about now through this video. Thank you for changing my mind, and keep making these videos!
the whole thing is just a one long shot. Its like watching a Birdman version of Jeremy Jahns. I would have thought that he talks a lot of garbage or goes off point often hence why he cuts. Im pretty sure he has filmed clip like that on purpose, and it was good!
I love this video, and I especially love how you and Schmoes and Flickster and the like all seem to have your own little group going and constantly promote each other and appear on each other's videos.
I've always felt like critics just spit out complex words and just tried to think of themselves like as non-human. I was very surprised to read Roger Ebert's reviews where he always said what he felt. He always was about the emotional experience. He said that he judged a film on the whole experience. He didn't chase the perfect film but he enjoyed what he got. Did you know that he hated The Usual Suspects? that he loved Batman:Mask of The Phantasm. Yeah, he liked an animated film but didn't like a neo-noir film. That for me is professionalism and loving movies; understanding characters and their struggles and not being afraid to EXPLAIN what you really think.
Considering I strongly have that feeling of discussing film and television after I see it and literally everyone gets pissed off and annoyed by my enthusiasm I think Ive found my people, Im going to try and continue doing movie reviews and Im minoring in film/media in college. Possibly a writing major. Thank you so much for this video Chris, and everyone involved :)
Critics shouldn't be bashed for transmitting their thoughts with some measure of literary skill or elegance. Its unfortunate that so much of the public equates intellectualism with snobbery.
Hey Chris, keep up the good content. I like the hilarity series, rant on movie goers , this film critic video, why scary films don't scare anymore, the issues with directors and action films, and the in depth conversation, analysis on your view point you give on movies you prefer to review over. The production quality is professional and continues to grow and your passion for movies, view point, and critique on films and the movie industry are not just entertaining but most important informative they make a connection with your audience and make a point that gives a fellow movie goer more perspectives and insight on the movies we love and the films we chose to see to generate more discussion on the love of movies.
I fully agree with Jeremy. Critics analyse movies as hard as they can and aren't as relatable as reviewers, who are more of a forgiving movie goer and more alike to the average person.
Thank you Chris for the years worth of wonderful videos you have made. I have followed you for many years & I consider you the magnum opus of film criticism since the passing of Roger Ebert. Your love & respect for his work is invaluable in the quality of your work. I think the approach that film reviews by video format have taken is the connotation that it's open ended. That's why I adore your videos.... you don't dictate, you discuss. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
How about Peter Rallis? He is funny and entertaining to watch but sad he quit his video review and move to written review, I hope he jump back to video review
Most original video I have ever seen a movie reviewer do. Absolutely perfect, you truly stand out among all these other great reviewers that you've shown us.
I think the director of Birdman seen this video then added the scene in the bar with Keaton and the critic lol. I couldn't help but think of that scene while re watching this
We like doing the videos better than written for the same exact reason man. I hate reading about everything that happens in a film for 4 paragraphs until I get to the 2 sentences about how I feel about it. Great video dude!
I'm 12 and have a pretty good knowledge of film I'd say, and it's hard trust me, no one watches my channel but just do what you enjoy and be creative... I guess. Kids will be frowned upon in this business however
FanboyBerries39 Movies You should start by adding a profile picture to your channel, that way you let people know your account was not made just for making playlist. Oh and change your channel's name to something simple and easy to remember. Just some friendly advice. And if you want to get popular, get professional. Use proper lighting and cuts in your videos so they don't become hard to watch
hey man, thank you so much for making this video, I am really getting into this movie critic thing on my channel, and can not wait to get to a point where I can bring new people your way when I get that big because you have helped me yo become one hell of a movie critic, notes will be taken and videos will be made because of all of these people bringing in their inputs. I love this entire video, beginning to end, keep up the great work!
Totally agree! there are a lot of critics that seems like they don't actually enjoy anything. And you can feel the frustration in their lines or videos.
You and Jeremy are my two most watched TH-cam movie reviewers. You are so similar yet so, so different - similar in your passion and how relatable you are to your audience, but your styles are rather different. You talk a lot more on the technical aspects of a film, Jeremy much more on how it affects him emotionally. You both touch on the other aspect, but your focus are opposites. And that's why I like you both so much - between your two styles, I really get a full spectrum of views.
Great video. Now I love movies but don't really review or criticise them like most others. I dont show my face or talk and just do slide shows and top 10s. So I'm wondering, have you any tips on how I can take the channel forward. Should I do reviews and be on camera? Thanks
You are awesome.... the most sensible critic I have ever come across, and loved this video... I would love your review anything negative or positive on my films, from a person like you.. Hats off Sir
I know this is totally unrelated to anything, but there's something about your lighting setup so that you can't see a single crease on your shirt. It makes it look like your hands & tie are floating in a sea of nothingness. :p
Chris is my go to guy, though I always formulate my opinion of the movie and don't let a reviewer make up my mind. I like to listen to the passion he shows in movies, an he looks at it as a filmmaker and a fan. He spots certain things I can't see in movies, so I pay closer attention if I rewatch.
What a fantastic video Chris. As a fellow movie lover, I tend to view film criticism very similarly. A lot of really valid and intriguing points made. The most important thing to me is whether or not a critic gives their OWN thoughts on a movie, and is able to talk about their points/perspectives, not just say "This sucked" or "This was awesome". It's flabbergasting that some people can't understand that every single person views a film differently, or has their OWN opinion. I loved PMI's point on someone who knows a lot about lighting in films viewing a film from a completely different perspective. I think that's something most people should keep in mind while watching or reading a review is that we're all just humans, that have different brains/minds and tastes, watching a film. Some will notice things like performance, or direction, or cinematography. Others couldn't care less and only care about story. There is someone out there (God help them) that thinks Movie 43 is the funniest movie ever made.
***** I feel like this explanation is a contradiction of facts. If anyone knew what they were "talking about", they wouldn't need jump-cuts at all. They're a tool used for sloppily fixing your mistakes, nothing more.
***** Thanks for the comment, I was about to post the exact same sentiment. Anyone can look like they're speaking with intent and articulation with clever editing. Stuckmann speaks a bit slower because he's searching for the best way to phrase his thoughts.
Jahns is usually funny and down to Earth...but he seems kinda uppity about "art house" films which is annoying. That's why I like Stuckmann the best because he comes at every movie with the most objective stance.
***** No, you misunderstood me. I merely meant that anyone who has to rely so heavily on jump-cuts isn't good at *expressing* their thoughts. Not suggesting they don't have any.
Chris, I want to thank you for taking something you love and sharing it with people who potentially won't like what you say. I love talking about movies but I'm not always confident to share my thoughts in case somebody thinks they're stupid. You take this seriously and I really appreciate it. I'd love to talk movies with you sometime but for now I will continue to enjoy your videos! Thank you.
I like written reviews from critics who went to school for it but TH-cam critics are usually more entertaining, they are more like us, the fans. You can ideologically understand a movie and you can understand a movies inherent entertainment, if you are able to convey that in a concise and fun way than you become a critic that ppl will listen to. I love Chris because he is not some walking thesaurus but a critic of the people!
"I like written reviews from critics who went to school for it but TH-cam critics are usually more entertaining, they are more like us, the fans." -- I'm both :)
Are you here simply to promote yourself..at first at thought you were some random youtuber but it appears you are big enough to not have to resort to such shameless self promotion.
Chibueze Nwakeze Assuming you're talking to me... I'm not here to "promote" myself. I have over a million subscribers, I don't need to leech off of the comments section of Chris's videos. No, I'm a fellow-critic and fan of his work, and like most videos I watch, I also comment on them. James' statement about more educated critics felt particularly relevant to my background and experience, so I decided to chime in. Why do you have a problem with that? Some two whole months later?
Your numerous comments disparaging Jeremy Jahns's editing style while lauding your own "superior" editing style reeks of self promotion (this is unfortunately not the only video you have complained about his editing). If you have reached out to Jeremy and he has chosen not to take your advise, you cannot turn around and say what your doing here is constructive criticism. It failed to be constructive criticism the second you reached out with advise and he declined. Also, there was no particular problem I have with you per say. I just generally tend to dislike individuals who elevate themselves at the expense of others, especially when the individual they are insulting cannot speak for themselves. Since you are a relatively sizeable channel, there are some people who will think Jeremy is lazy and less capable than you and the likeliness of Jeremy responding is slim to none. The next possible course of action is that the person reading such a comment will check out the channel of the "capable" reviewer which = another viewer which = another possible subscriber. With your many comments all I see is "look how much better I am am then these other guys, come check me out". Such individuals who employ such tactics strike me as opportunistic scavengers. If you are the real deal your actions (videos in this case) will speak for themselves. This is more about a general trend I see in many of your comments I have seen.
Chibueze Nwakeze > _"This is more about a general trend I see in many of your comments"_ ... okay, and how many of my comments have you seen? Because I've left around 500,000 since 2006. You're unfairly painting a broad, and critical portrayal of my personality and behavior based on a ridiculously minuscule percentage of them. Conversely, I could find 10x as many comments as you have, and illustrate a "trend" that I'm a polite, kind, and appreciative individual who regularly responds to every member of his audience. And again, not trying to "promote" anything - I don't need to. But I do stand by my comments: my editing abilities, and video production *are* better (which is not to say others' are bad). And I don't think anyone would argue with that, either - if you have a problem with my being proud of my of hard work (and I've been doing video production professionally for 15 years), then fine... chalk it up to my big ego. But please don't assume I'm some "opportunistic scavenger" who is going around insulting others. If people want to check out my channel after reading one of my comments, that's great... but I'm participating in these conversations to add my own viewpoints and experience to the discussion, not because I seek one or two additional subscribers. (Again, I have over a million... two more is rather inconsequential to me at this point). But more to the point: James made a comment about enjoying both written reviews from individuals with film degrees, as well as entertaining TH-camrs. As literally the *only* film reviewer on the site that fits both of those crtiera, I felt it more than appropriate to politely chime in. I wasn't denigrating anyone else, or attempting to "promote" anything. Just reminding OP that his hypothetical individual does indeed exist, and I'm it. And as a point of logistical correctness: someone ignoring advice doesn't make it any less useful or constructive.
This is exactly what I needed to see I’ve been wanting to start a review channel since I was in high school but I had no idea how to start up. this video has inspired me thank you Chris and thank you everyone who was involved in this video
Great insight, Chris! For me, I just review movies on Letterboxd. More of a hobby, I just love movies, and wanna talk about them. Loved the call in by Scott Mantz. Guys, don't change your opinion to match with the majority. No opinion is right, but respect all opinions.
Thank you for making this. I've been thinking about starting to do online movie reviews and this really helps. It was great that you invited other critics to give their opinions and share their experience as well.
I love films, and I love talking about films. Because of your video reviews I feel like I can finally relate and debate films that I usually can't do with friends. I am trying to get a TH-cam channel to start reviewing films, and your information is extremely helpful.
Chris, SUPER appreciated this video. I really want to get into reviewing and this was really informative. It's been a couple years since making this so if you had any more advice or if any things have changed since first making this, it would be awesome if you made a part 2 or follow up!
Very good video, Chris! The TH-cam movie reviewers actually inspired me to do reviews myself. I now do video game reviews on a pretty big Swiss website. And if a game was awesome, the reader will feel that in my review, even though I try to avoid the 'I'-form in those reviews. Really great points made by PMI, Jahns and the Schmoes, great video, Chris!
I sincerely want to thank you for your time and effort in crafting these segments on your channel because they offer what few other videos on TH-cam do, insight. There is a lot of powerful understating crammed into this video and it is refreshing to know that their is a community of people who have a real passion for film just as I do. Keep up the good work!
Great video! I've been watching a lot of these guys for a while and I actually have made the decision to buy a nice camera this summer and start reviewing movies. And this excites me so much! Hopefully being able to convey my own opinions and excitements about one of the great values of life, sinking my self into a movie for a good two hours. There is nothing I love more then talking and sharing my love for a good movie with a couple of friends who understand me and have the culture to relate to my feelings. But revealing it to a wider arrange of people with the hopefully the same purpose is just the best thought so this video hit home for me A+
Thank you so much for making this video. It was very nice to hear your opinion, and others, on this topic. I will take what you've said to heart, and I look forward to checking some of these guys out!
Incredible video Chris, proud to be a part of it. Thank you. -Schmoes
You're the best
Hey schmoes! I just wanna say I love your reviews on youtube and I love the website! It freakin rocks! So I thank you two for doin what your doing.
you guys rock!
exostalker its the worst dick move to say something when you have no idea what you're saying.
***** oh hey kid, go back to kindergarden, thanks.
this is why i prefer chris over other reviewers. he sounds genuine and i can see how he love movies.
Fake film critics arguing that they're real film critics. Haha
And Jeremy Jahns :)
Exactly! Just watch his reaction for Mad max fury Road. He was soo passionate and happy to review that movie. You can tell he Enjoyed informing us on how great he thought the movie was!

That's the blackest suit I've ever seen. It's like staring into a dark void.
Mike B Chris is the void
cz he's too white ass🤣
True
I love it when all my favourite movie reviewers gather around. Great initiative and awesome video, Chris!
Andrei Terbea 😂man I have the same mindset as film reviewers but by my channel name I'm apparently a film critic, all I wanna do is give my normal opinions on movies and let others have their own opinions, but I'm known as a "film critic" toward viewers😂
Holy Crap! Didn't know you watched Chris
Awesome content bro! Keep it up!
I wish critics were as smart as this guy. He hit the nail on the head.
I disagree with a few of his review ratings but he is definitely a smart guy.
I wish Siskel & Ebert are still around. reviewing movies on TV and TH-cam.
that's the thing with really good reviewers. You definitely know where they're coming from and understand their stance, whether you disagree or not.
The Poreproductions
watch redlettermedia, ralph sepe and others like YMS they are incredible reviewers
sanitorz We need more mentions of ralphthemoviemaker, he's clearly a rising star.
Without a doubt you are my favourite you tuber Chris, you have so much intelligence and professionalism and logically thinking.
+Addy O If you like logical thinking, check out the youtuber I Hate Everything. I assure you, the name is misleading. He uses logic to pick apart things he doesn't care for, and it is entertaining as hell.
+actually QWERTY i love Alex! I got to know him thanks to SFTW
Boba Fett Alex actually mentions Chris in is latest vid. :D
actually QWERTY i know!
Boba Fett Very exciting. If you like Alex, you're bound to love GradeAUnderA. His channel is similar.
JeremyJahns, Chris Stuckmann, and theFLICKpick are my favorite.
Same!

Anna x3 And Scott mantz
@@annax3136 same
Chris Stuckman is officially the best Film Critic Critic
***** ha ha...they are comedians..
***** i was talking only about red letter media..
*****
RedLetterMedia is not just the Plinkett reviews.
Agreed
My god... you're so articulate when speaking it's almost hypnotic.
Right???
Exactly!
He takes it seriously...and it shows in the quality of his content.
9:00 I agree with you there! It doesn't feel right if I don't share my opinion about movies! Sadly, hardly any of my friends or family like to intellectually talk about them.
I feel the exact same way
Me too... Nobody around me wants to talk about the depths of a movie like the subliminal messages, pacing, angles, micro expressions etc.
SweetTea742 I relate to this so much.
My definite favorite video reviewers:
-YMS, mostly because of the fact that, while I do not exactly agree with his opinions all the time, he still knows what he is talking about, and it's always interesting to hear his opinions, as he also has a great knowledge in film moviemaking beyond storytelling. That, and he's pretty damn funny as well :P
-Redlettermedia, because they always discuss a movie in detail, and they also seem very interested in talking about it. That, and their Plinkett reviews are nothing short of legendary.
-Doug Walker, because his taste in movies is pretty damn mature, and his love for movies always shines through in his videos. And his Sibling Rivalry with Rob are like wathcing Siskel and Ebert.¨
-Chris Stuckmann, because he is the guy whose taste in movies is the one I identify with the most.¨
-Jeremy jahns.
Some other TH-camrs I also like to watch:
-The Flick Pick
- AMC Theatres
-Schmoesknow
- Pretty Much It
- JogWheel / MovieNight
Why do people not finish their comments?
owen moore what do you mean? My comment was finished when i posted it
I'm sorry, I saw a ... And thought that was a finished comment. M y apologies
***** ScreenJunkies is good too, but they bring in most of those film critics
*****
Ok, woah.
At the end of the day, a good film critic is one who loves movies.
Love watching Chris and Jeremy Jahns! My go to guys!
Same!! They're my favorite movie reviewers.
Me too
My two favorite reviewers! And (keyboard sarcasm) AngryJoe's movie reviews (Joking).
Hi Josh.
no
I accidentally skipped ahead early on in the video and what I heard was, "I worked with mentally handicapped children...this is one of the hardest parts of film criticism."
no
Cynical Stew Bruh, what
Great Collaboration !
What an awesome video. Thanks for orchestrating all this Chris. Really loved all the perspectives.
You are very competent reviewer and very enjoyable to watch!
this is your most underrated video, your passion for film really showed here Chris, grear video.
Great discussion Chris, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. Applause for you. For your next one you could do it on he subjects of "How some CGI in movies has ruined or lessened the overall experience of the film"
Thats a good idea, Bump
That is a topic purely from ignorance.
Cheers.
8:24 nice Beyond the Trailer impression
Shots fired.
+Vickering Avenue I don't like her that much , but she's allowed to have her own opinions.
She doesn’t even review movies. She just talks about the political correctness of a film. It’s so annoying.
This is the avengers of youtube film critics.
they know each other pretty good
And Lights Camera Jackson is Thanos.
***** To be fair, Nostalgia Critic is mostly based in Blip.
(Plus, it's not like the Avengers can claim Spider-man, Wolverine or countless other popular and/or badass Marvel superheroes, so I think the analogy holds.)
***** Nostalgia Critic and YMS are dicks who bash on movies.
It was nice to see Jeremy Jahns without 75 jump cuts per minute. I find that style annyoing.
Robert Jones so true
ITS, JUST, LIKE, HE, KEEPS, TELEPORTING, EVERY, SECOND.
I barley notice it
I came across your channel a month ago Chris.
Cheers!
All of my favorite movie reviewers all in one video! This is amazing.
Hey Chris,
I just wanted to thank you for this video and always being really open and honest with your reviews and yourself.
Idk why but I was completely engrossed by this video. So educational and well put together. This is why I love Chris and many other movie critics
Excellent video Chris. Great insights on how to be a film reviewer on TH-cam as well! I noticed that nod (diss) to LCJ haha.
It's weird hearing Jeremy Jahns speak without all the quick cuts.
the whole thing is just a one long shot. Its like watching a Birdman version of Jeremy Jahns. I would have thought that he talks a lot of garbage or goes off point often hence why he cuts. Im pretty sure he has filmed clip like that on purpose, and it was good!
Yea, he's mentioned it before in other video's, still it's jarring. Lol.
I love this video, and I especially love how you and Schmoes and Flickster and the like all seem to have your own little group going and constantly promote each other and appear on each other's videos.
This must have taken you a long time to put together, you did such a great job! Really enjoyed hearing your guys thoughts on film criticism.
Love it Chris thanks for taking the time to do this!
Chris stuckman has some of the best insight on the internet
Considering I strongly have that feeling of discussing film and television after I see it and literally everyone gets pissed off and annoyed by my enthusiasm
I think Ive found my people, Im going to try and continue doing movie reviews and Im minoring in film/media in college. Possibly a writing major.
Thank you so much for this video Chris, and everyone involved :)
This video deserves a lot more views.
Critics shouldn't be bashed for transmitting their thoughts with some measure of literary skill or elegance. Its unfortunate that so much of the public equates intellectualism with snobbery.
Amen.
/ only TH-camr reviewer who actually scripts his reviews.

Hey Chris, keep up the good content. I like the hilarity series, rant on movie goers , this film critic video, why scary films don't scare anymore, the issues with directors and action films, and the in depth conversation, analysis on your view point you give on movies you prefer to review over. The production quality is professional and continues to grow and your passion for movies, view point, and critique on films and the movie industry are not just entertaining but most important informative they make a connection with your audience and make a point that gives a fellow movie goer more perspectives and insight on the movies we love and the films we chose to see to generate more discussion on the love of movies.
cool
I fully agree with Jeremy. Critics analyse movies as hard as they can and aren't as relatable as reviewers, who are more of a forgiving movie goer and more alike to the average person.
That's true but quite often in Jeremy's reviews he just goes straight past the plot synopsis unless it's a movie that he really enjoys
This is Chris' best video ever. It deserves an A+ Awesometacular!

John brought new meaning to getting Stuckmanised..... *shivers*
Jeremy Jahns is the bomb, he has so much energy, and I mostly agree with his opinions on movies.
i watch JeremyJahns
Shmoes
Chris Stuckmann
TheFlickpick
Watch Robbie Webster too, he's a vlogger not a critic but he has some really great points about movies and he's just a nice guy
and AMC Theatres !!
How about Peter Rallis? He is funny and entertaining to watch but sad he quit his video review and move to written review, I hope he jump back to video review
Should check out PMI
You should watch FanboyFlicks. That guy doesn't talk that much about mainstream movies, but more about teribble, awful, shitty movies.
Daaaang Stuckmann you gathered all the avengers
Most original video I have ever seen a movie reviewer do. Absolutely perfect, you truly stand out among all these other great reviewers that you've shown us.
Chris Stuckmann
Nice tie
Anyways, most of what you're saying would work with any type of review. Being from a movie review through technology reviews.
I think the director of Birdman seen this video then added the scene in the bar with Keaton and the critic lol. I couldn't help but think of that scene while re watching this
lol
Jeremy Jahns without quick-cuts gives me a little anxiety
We like doing the videos better than written for the same exact reason man. I hate reading about everything that happens in a film for 4 paragraphs until I get to the 2 sentences about how I feel about it. Great video dude!
Hey Chris, what do you think of kids being movie critics. I've tried my hand at it, and what to start getting more serious about it soon.
Colossusblock Go for it. I'll be watching.
Colossusblock Bad idea. I bet you'll be shit
Colossusblock Chris Stuckmann...?
hey man, thank you so much for making this video, I am really getting into this movie critic thing on my channel, and can not wait to get to a point where I can bring new people your way when I get that big because you have helped me yo become one hell of a movie critic, notes will be taken and videos will be made because of all of these people bringing in their inputs.
I wonder what Stuckmann thinks of YMS
Adam is my No. 1 film reviewer on TH-cam, how about you?
I was literally thinking the same thing
He tweeted Adam telling him he really enjoyed his Enemy analysis.
YAAAAAAAAAASSS
Luke Ellis I like him, even though I disagree with him more often than not.
Great video. Now I love movies but don't really review or criticise them like most others.
I dont show my face or talk and just do slide shows and top 10s.
So I'm wondering, have you any tips on how I can take the channel forward. Should I do reviews and be on camera?
Thanks
Amazing video Chris, me being a reviewer this hits me right in the heart
You are awesome.... the most sensible critic I have ever come across, and loved this video... I would love your review anything negative or positive on my films, from a person like you.. Hats off Sir
I know this is totally unrelated to anything, but there's something about your lighting setup so that you can't see a single crease on your shirt. It makes it look like your hands & tie are floating in a sea of nothingness. :p
... 'tis... unnatural O_o
What!!!
This is what you have to say
+Amelia Bee Haha! I noticed that too.
This is why you're one of my favourite TH-cam channels Chris, getting everyone involved for us, we thank you!
I prefer that video of JeremyJahns with no so much jump cuts. It's so much better.
I'm sure he's a nice guy, but the jump cuts turn me off and I feel like I'll have a seizure if I watch any of his reviews for too long.
"I like written reviews from critics who went to school for it but TH-cam critics are usually more entertaining, they are more like us, the fans."
-- I'm both :)
Chibueze Nwakeze
> _"This is more about a general trend I see in many of your comments"_
... okay, and how many of my comments have you seen?
Letterboxd is fantastic!
Thank you for making this. I've been thinking about starting to do online movie reviews and this really helps. It was great that you invited other critics to give their opinions and share their experience as well.
"I worked with mentally handicapped children."
Guess that explains how you could deal with the Batman v Superman fanboys...
*Air horns go off nonstop*
my hero.
That was a fucking roast my boy😂
😂😂😂
cerberu999 I think it's a roast, so it's forgiven to be a hater
I love films, and I love talking about films. Because of your video reviews I feel like I can finally relate and debate films that I usually can't do with friends. I am trying to get a TH-cam channel to start reviewing films, and your information is extremely helpful.
this was like the justice league of movie reviewers
+Animesh Mishra *avengers lol
but withought YMS...
*Avengers
He sucks
+Mr. Wayne 007 no he doesn't
"When you make a critic, imagine that you are talking to your friends at the bar" OH MY GODNESS those words!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am awakened.
But revealing it to a wider arrange of people with the hopefully the same purpose is just the best thought so this video hit home for me A+
This is one of the greatest videos ever!
Thank you so much for making this video. It was very nice to hear your opinion, and others, on this topic. I will take what you've said to heart, and I look forward to checking some of these guys out!
Wow this is very interesting and informative. Thank you!
