  • Hello Everyone, this week I'm in Spain ! I enjoyed the opportunity to answer a subscriber's question. I'd love to hear from you, if you have had a break in your art, and find out how you have managed to get back on track ! This is my first chat and demonstration with collage - a process I love but often forget about ! #collage #reconnecting #becreative

OK! I will order a sketch book in the morning. I started watching a video of you with Buddy... but then I lost it. You have convinced me. No more starring at blank canvases or trying to create masterpieces which go horribly wrong. Buddy, here I come!!
Thanks for your generous lovely arty videos, Gaynor. You are a treasure

I know this is almost a year ago. This resonates with me so much! Grown kids and I’m on the couch in the evening and restless. I have my sketchbook etc. but it is put away in my room and I have to go dig it out and then decide if I want to have anything else etc. Your art box by the couch is brilliant! I have a box and a basket to put the box and other items in and have with me in the evening! You make me want to create and to be creative! Thank you! (From Atlanta,Ga 👋🏻)

Crumbs !!! where did that year go. Having made my sofa studio a firm habit, I cannot imagine life without it - you will be amazed at how much you can achieve 🥰 Have fun X

This was lovely - hearing about your history of becoming an artist. Your videos have really helped me a lot. It doesn't matter where we are in our process, we always have things to share with others! I'm thrilled, too, that you talk about Spain and inserted the photos of Malaga. I hope to go to Spain for the winter (from Canada), and looked at accommodations not that far from there. I had no idea it was the "city of museums" as it says on that statue! Wonderful. And so encouraged by your sketchbook work, and your collage ideas. I'm just getting started in a sketchbook and like you in the early days felt I had to do art to be worth looking at. Now I love the idea of playing around in a sketchbook and just need to get in the habit. No need to reply! Just keep making videos! I'm inspired by every single one, more than you can imagine.

I had to chuckle when you revealed your knitted scarves. I too have a box full of scarves from my knitting days. Unfortunately it has taken me decades to work out it was the need to create art that was itching my soul. I started in 2020 and enjoy it so much I'm not sure how I didn't have a clue sooner. A fine art degree would have been fun too but there's no way I'm going back to uni. Keep them coming Gaynor.

So glad that you are on your way, so to speak ! As well as the scarves, I have an array of home made clothes - nothing fit for purpose 😂

I, too, had many scarves that I knitted and luckily a friend took them all to a craft fair and sold them all! 2 years ago I found an online course called The Mastery Program by Milan Art Institute (Milan not the city but the family name of a family in the US who started this school). It's been really amazing. The course can be completed in a year, though you can take as long as you want, and it starts teaching you oil painting techniques of the old masters, and then acrylics, and mixed media, etc. It helps you find your voice as an artist, how to be a professional artist, etc. You may be well into your art now as this is an old video, but I am so enjoying having some professional instruction!

How after Textile designer career I did nothing anymore. I became very sick, long recovered. After a shamanic healing 1 year ago I go too my studio every day and make water colours and acrylic paintings.
I am just so thankful too my son who is shamanic for his helping with meditation. I feel happy lost 5 kg by doing what I love the most creative things, Keep moving on ❤ Monique

My story is so similar I stopped my art at 25 too many reasons I thought I had but mostly in my own head sadly I also started knitting and crochet lol now 3 months away from 68 I am starting again. You must get tired of me saying thank you so much for all your help and hard work but I am just so appreciative of your videos . The longer the better for me 👍😍❤️🙏🇨🇦

Wonderful! Such generosity of spirit! Each video is a treasury of ideas and this channel is an encouraging and confidence building space to visit. Thank you for sharing some of your backstory to art, Gaynor, I appreciate your vulnerability. I have been writing all my life but sidestepped into art during lockdowns in my 50s, it took me back to the feeling of being in the creative flow I experienced as a child, as if something lost was found. My very best wishes xx

I am still in the faze of not painting or doing what I want to be doing. I retired at the end of Sept and before I did I use to say when I retire I am going to paint all day. Here it is November and have not done a thing but watch videos all day. Grrr!

    • @gaynorpattle

Hi Lori, I hear you !! Have you tried journaling ? It helps me enormously,. When I'm putting something off, I write down all the reasons that might be stopping me - a kind of a conversation with myself. I set an intention to make a start and it does help! Start in a small way, spend time in your art space, make it as inviting as possible and just go through your pens/pencils/paints, make a few marks ? Just 30 mins, then an hour etc. You will get there 😊

I enjoyed seeing your collage process Gaynor. You never know what exciting effects may crop up! I am glad you are enjoying your time in Malaga and hope you are getting lots of arty inspiration from your surroundings. Collage is my main art medium at the moment but I love painting and doing anything that involves paint and paper! I think the main problem when making art is that we don't want to be judged. Art should exist for arts sake without the pressure we (I) put on ourselves that it has to be a masterpiece each time. x

Hello Janey, Thank you for watching and taking time to comment. I did my Fine Art degree in Canterbury at UCA. I was working part-time and sometimes found it hard to dedicate the time. Looking back, I am so glad I did it, so glad I didn't give up! I'd say research the degree, we had access to print rooms and a photographic lab that have now gone !! I think you have to really want to do it and if that's the case you will love it.

I have been going back and watching all of your videos. I am so happy to have discovered this one today! I enjoyed hearing your backstory. I was away from art for many years. When my daughter graduated from college I decided it was time for to art again. I started with a drawing class then on to pottery. 20 years later, and my partner and I make pottery full time. Early mornings and evenings are dedicated to drawing, painting, and printing. Art has taken over our home!

Hello Gaynor...fabulous vlog! A great many of us will relate to your need to make art but, at times, feel unable to commit..for many reasons - life, work, family, illness - it's like a churning and longing inside and the confusion of why.. why can't I make art.....thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences....wonderful sculptures! And look now at your subscribers! I used to paint more when I was younger, but lost my passion for it, didn’t feel it was very good. I have time and energy now and am starting again. Love acrylics and still have some tubes from long ago, some no longer useful but I thought why not. The idea of collage is new for me, and I will be experimenting with it. Love the vlog and encouragement from you. Hopeful I can find fun and passion again without the idea of having to paint something that appeals to anyone else. Thanks so much!

My own creative journey was similar and yet so different. My mother and brother were excellent artists and I was very intimidated by them so my leap happened after my mother passed away. I was 38 and had 5 children so it began with sewing and embroidery often requested for articles in magazines. At 47 I bought my first canvas which I used for a seascape which was sold to attorneys. The fact that it sold made me jump in whole heartedly. From 1997 until today age 72 I have sold hundreds of paintings which neither my mother or brother managed to do. Comparing myself to them held me back for 47 years. The lesson for me was, let nothing and no one hold us back. If I am not painting I am preparing for markets greeting cards, earrings, kaftans, crochet blankets , jackets and what ever else I can come up with. Creating is who I am. Im sorry though that neither of my parents saw me produce anything.
