I've struggled with depression for years, and thought I'd been eating healthfully as a vegetarian--but when I cut out dairy, and then eggs, I noticed a big difference in my mental health. I was making the change for my diabetes and heart disease, so this was an unexpected and welcome result!

As an integrative clinical psychologist, I am so glad to see this getting some attention. A plant based diet, movement and psychotherapy combined can treat psychiatric disorders and can move people to optimum mental (and physical) health.

Wonderful that mental and emotional health is being covered here. Though this is nothing new - those who have been eating the whole food plant based way have been reporting improvements in their mental health for decades. This statement from one of the participants in our annual week long retreats in which we eat a very simple grain and vegetable meal, along with soup, and mild exercise, sums this up very well. He said - "I lost 8 kilos (20lbs) of emotional baggage." We all experienced a refreshed, calm, optimism, that money cannot buy!

Excellent video! We are in our 80's and feel better than ever! Still work for a strong body, a calm mind, and a positive attitude. Doing some research for our tiny new healthy-aging advice channel. Learned a lot. Thanks!

Can you comment on why there are so many more anecdotal stories of animal based diets for helping mental health? I can’t seem to find many for Vegan/Plant based. I myself have tried both and found success with both - so i’m fairly neutral on this.

Melissa has heaps of important information but she should slow down and emphasize the important points like Vanita does. I thought alcohol would have also been up there with sugar, coffee and dairy
