  • Today, Craig and Valerie taste a Sugar Loaf Mango - also known as E4. This is one of the mangos from Zills High Performance Plants breeding project. This mango was purchased and shipped to us from Mark Beverly
    We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm on the west coast of Florida and from other Florida farms (mainly on the east coast). Mangos taste different when grown in different conditions and when picked at different times/ripened differently. Our opinions of a particular mango are just that - opinions on one specific mango, off of a specific tree, growing in a a specific location. We are not evaluating a variety in general and by no means intend to offend anyone by our less than stellar review of what might be your favorite mango.
    Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

    I planted a tree in Aug last year, growing well, I purchased on reputation alone, and for the fact that it ripens and/or can be picked green to help deter the four and two legged thieves. I have had a few of these this year and I am soooo glad I planted this one. all the ones I have tasted have had a strong coconut flavor, I do detect the pineapple, specially ones that are a day away from being fully ripe. in any case, don't expect much color on the outside, if you see these completely yellow, they are rotten already. the coconut small can be detected even before cutting them open.

    Mr Zill gave me my first taste in the office and I flipped out. Forget pineapple or coconut flavors because overall if you are not the Carrie/spicy/turpentine/piney kind of mango lover then this is another #1. It’s just so special. There are a few #1’s and after I tasted it that first time I asked Mr Zill to please propagate it. He said maybe. Then every few months I would call to find out if they grafted a bunch. When I found out they did I called every chance I got to see if they were ready for sale. They only did 200 grafts initially and I was able to get 13. Next season 2021 they will have been in the ground 3 full years. They are all growing at different rates. They were tiny little trees when I got them and the biggest one now might be 4 3/4 feet tall. They never change colors when ripe they just soften up. And they have a huge window for ripeness. I’m talking maybe 3 weeks from the time they are a bit soft to very soft and still great tasting. I got some fruit that first summer and we did a 4th of July taste testing. Guess who won!!!

      Richard W Our little tree held multiple fruit this year at around 4’ high too. I love how long they are delicious. Very forgiving fruit.

      Sulcata Grove we went back and forth on Sugarloaf’ qualities after your first taste testing maybe last year and of course we both are in love with this variety. Of my 13 original trees I had to replace 3 for various reasons. It might have been cause my field drains where they are planted so perhaps the 3 got too much water. It’s never the fault of ZHPP because nobody in the world puts out plants as perfect as his.

    I may be late for the comment. May I ask between Sugar Loaf and Coconut Cream, which one has more coconut flavor ? Which one is sweeter ? Which one is more tart ?
    Thanks for the video

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An Nguyen Sugar Loaf probably wins out in a side by side comparison as it is more complex in flavor. Coconut Cream is cream, sweet, mild coconut flavor, while sugar loaf reminds of us pina colada smoothie mix in flavor.

      Probably Glenn, Coconut Cream, and Lemon Meringue. But thankful we don’t have to be limited to three. There are definitely advantages to planting for extended season by having a later season mango added well.
