For us poors, it's worth it to make your own. It's just beeswax and lanolin, buy separately, put it in a pot and melt it together. It's fun to dial in the exact texture you want. I also add in a small bit of pine tar for extra water proofing and helps it last longer. Lots of different recipes to experiment with too!
We’re all poor these days 😂

Lanolin really is a wonder material. Nothing beats it for preventing rust on cars, it naturally creeps across surfaces which makes it perfect for cavity spraying/undersealing.
Best thing to break in a new baseball glove too
Ohhhhhhh I've always loved the look of a waxed flesh out boot. Makes those Bear Slayers look so good!!
What's the point of roughout boots if you're gonna slick it all down with wax???
@@nicholaslasslo6697because you still have all of the benefits of roughout but with extra water repellent properties
Like the waxed look of the boot!
Your coloring outside the lines on the disks earns you a score of 6.2/10. 😉 I've been using Fiebing and Kiwi saddle soap for decades... haven't detected any ill effects. I do however rinse the saddle soap off with a damp cloth and don't leave a film on the surface. When I got my White's and Nick's boots I switched from Mink Oil to White's and Nick's branded Boot Oil and Boot Grease. I buy the large sized packages as I've got a lot of leather to maintain in addition to my footwear. The boots need service regularly as I use them for work, hiking and hunting and they get filthy and wet... no closet queens in this house!
I’ve been using their boot wax for a while now. Looking forward to using the roseanvil code
I am completely out of saddle soap, and my Sno-seal and neatsfoot oil are depleted so I sprung for one of these kits.
The brand LP makes some great stuff too.
Also I don’t know who makes the stuff for Occidental work gear but it’s pretty good also.
good idea how to care these great boots
Check out Montana Pitch Blend. They have saddle soap, oil, and wax. It's mink oil with pine pitch as the base. The soap adds soap. The wax adds beeswax to thicken it and add waterproofing. I've been using the stuff for over a decade. The pine pitch does a lot to add waterproofing.
I did this too mine I didn’t like it until I took them to the horsehair wheel on my line finisher
I used Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP on saddle tan Grant Stones. It made them a significantly darker, but made the leather way more supple and I personally prefer the color of the darkened natural veg tan. I tried the Obenauf's on copper rough and tough Red Wings and it also darkened them, and made the boots feel sticky/waxy. I'm guessing the oil tanned leather was too saturated to really absorb the Obenauf's. It would be cool to see how different products react to a range of different types of leathers.
Used this kit on JG Barefoot African Rangers. Definitely darkened the leather (which I didn't mind), but it was great for waterproofing. After a few months, it's lightened nearly to its original shade... But I'd probably not use the whole kit on anything I care to keep the original color of.
I'm a big fan of Otterwax, but Huberd's is my go-to. I would love to see a video of their products.
You did a video about Ug boots and said that they were developed because the lanolin was rotting the leather boots. Is it possible that Otterwax and other lanolin products could rot modern leather boots? I have used Otter Wax on two pair of boots with great results. I used Otter Wax on my son's Jim Green Boabab boots and the leather split on the side of the toe box. Could it have been the lanolin?
great video! Would be interesting to see a comparison of the different boot oils, would help people figure out which one to use on their boots or to achive different results.
BootSpy did a comparison of a bunch of different products by only used smooth neutral/undyed sample to show how much the leather darkened, as well as a waterproof test.
@@cjanquart thanks!! I’ll check that out
I waxed a canvas jacket with Otter wax over the winter.. the smell bothers me so much though.
I tried Barbour wax afterwards,, smells much less intrusive.. I do have their suede cleaner for my rough out Drews boots though
I would say get martexin wax if you are getting a casual canvas jackets for a jacket that looks good for a night out, martexin is also what all the fashiony designers for waxed canvas jackets like filson, rogue territory and flint and tinder use. I use fjallraven for my truly outdoor stuff. The fjallraven even performs better if you have a beat up iron you don't use on normal clothes anymore to go through the jacket with a lower heat setting after rewaxing.
I just use Hubert’s shoe grease, works great, you just put it on a cloth or brush and rub it in, job done.
That's a great all-in-one kit so you don't have to buy something from Company A and something else from Company B.
I can understand folks that say this "ruins" the leather but I do understand why they want to keep the nap on the leather; I used Bick4 on my White's Perry Selects in saddle tan because Leather Honey darkened them up more than I liked.
If I had some waxed flesh boots, this would be a great kit to have.
Excellent video. I just bought some 6-inch boots from the Thorogood brand in tobacco color, which I don't want to darken when it comes to maintaining the leather. What products do you suggest I use to wash the leather and condition it so that it doesn't change the beautiful color of my boots?
Bick 1 and Bick 4
@@jaemane1 Thank you.
Looks good, I was afraid that they were milking otter's for the wax (like Mink oil). They should partner with Danner for distribution.
You know it's marketing hype when they say that they're rehydrating with oils and wax. Hydration is the process of adding water to something. Oils and waxes displace water just the opposite.
Fancy BS products. There are plenty of high quality old school leather care products such as FiebIngs saddle soap and Neatsfoot shoe oil. Quality leather care products originated long before industrialization and those brands are still around.
Obenauf wax for my wax jacket, suede - nubuck - rough out footwear. Venetian shoe cream for my CXL and smooth leather. Natural car leather care works as well.
You can condition boots/shoes right out of the box before wearing. I will definitely wax the bear slayer before going out to the wood.
Everyone and their mother has their own opinion on leather care. That being said Nikwax has been pretty great imo even though they lean on the more modern side compared to otterwax, cobbler's choice etc
Can you do a video for suede or nubuck? I recently picked up some Jim Green Baobabs and I’m loving them, but I don’t know how to care for them properly. I have a horsehair brush, but I don’t have a dedicated soap or oil, and I don’t know how often to clean them.
Suede can be tricky but nubuck is the exact same process depicted here. Nubuck is still a grained leather, so you have nothing to worry about there.
@@Arto257 oh thank you. I wanna make these last a decade so that’ll definitely save me a few years lol
Just don't oversaturate the leather with product unless the way you wear your boots actively dries it out. Less is more afterall.
@@cheekibreeki9155 I would say that they get wet often, but not severely so. For example, I probably step in one puddle a day, have a hose hit them once or twice, and have water droplets hit them while working with watered plants
The waxed boots look really good.
Oils should never be applied to heel stacks or the mid-sole as you did in the video. These areas are glued and oils penetrating vegtan can cause delamination. Also, when using wax, I recommend applying the wax with latex gloves on. This way, the wax melts quickly onto the fingers and no wax is wasted soaking into a cloth; nearly all of it is absorbed into the leather.
Castile is olive oil soap usually made with potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide as the base with other oils being added for moisturizing properties.
Imo wax is good for a full grain leather but a key feature of a split leather is it's ability to dry without risk of cracking or something so they aren't that vulnerable to water as full grain leather. Waxing for such leather isn't necessary - use water protection spray or grease if you prefer natural leathercare
Awesome timing for this video! I bought a used leather sofa over the weekend and it’s in great shape but needs a little cleaning. I ordered the whole kit, cause I’ve got boots that need love, too!
Oh no, it darkened my boots. Don't worry, ginger. You'll live.
My boot cleaning consists of washing them with a power washer when I wash my vehicle and then spray wd-40 after
Castille is a place in France. They were the best place to get soap from through the late roman empire and the entire middle ages.
It's just nice soap
Thanks for the run through. It’s great to see a new product before I would try it.
Personally, I’ve always had great results with Skidmore’s Leather Cream.
Isn't "bee's" wax an animal fat? Yes, it isn't sub-cutaneous lard scraped from a carcus. But without European Bees, it doesn't exist.
I happily use it on roughout boots and also like what wool grease (lanolin) does to dry leather.
Castile soap = Jabón de Castilla (Water, ashes and extra virgin olive oil)
I still have no clue which one to use if I don’t wanna discolor my iron rangers. Your before and after pics of the coasters made it hard to tell if there was any difference 🤷🏻♂️
Depends on the iron ranger leather. I can tell you first hand, for the hawthorne muleskinners, if you put the otter wax boot wax on them, it will discolor them to an almost solid brown, but splotchy. I could have added more layers of wax to even out the color, but I went ahead and washed it out with Bick 1 to rectify my mistake.
@@jaemane1 the ones I'm referring to are the Copper R&T. I've got the Slate Muleskinner as well but I know better to put any kind of wax or oil on those.
Fn paid ad...
Nice! I used otter wax and Snow Seal to make some affordable Levi’s canvas jackets into waxed canvas jacket for Christmas presents. Great products for that it on my boots so far.
Maybe you could do a longer term test if leather swatches with leather honey, otter wax, snow seal, Hubbard’s shoe grease, and some other popular conditioners in a few different test situations likes motor oil, water, road salt, and dirt/mud?
Can you review craft and glory boots from India.😊
Of course the saddle soap didn't do anything. You didn't use water, agitate it and wash it off.
i just search for online stores that sell natural stuff
beeswax, castor oil, cocoa butter and/or lanolin, grape seed oil and some drops of tea tree essential oil (1/2 of oil and the rest is beeswax + cocoa butter) all mixed . Conditions and waterproofs
if you want to condition something like leather gloves or something you do not want to be sticky DO NOT USE beeswax. Use lanolin in it's place
I thought you had to treat rough out leather like suede when cleaning it. 😮
If you don't want to change the appearance and nap texture, definitely!
8:20 What boots are those?
18:56 long paid commercial.
*Unless you absolutely love the waxed suede/roughout look of the flattened fibers, don't use this kit on your suede/roughout lol 😅!!*
*There's products specifically made for suede/roughout on their website.*
*Again, if you don't mind what it does to your suede/roughout, by all means go to town lol 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣! Anywho, this kit would be great for smooth leather. It looks pretty nice!*

But it doesn't look like fur now
Leather is just skin. Just wear your boots in the shower and use your body wash. Follow me for more bad advice
😂😂😂Thank you for sharing😂😂😂We will definitely not use it😉🤣🤣🤣
The Otterwax System sounds a lot like a beauty skin care system.
If you think about it, leather is also skin. The skin care “beauty” routine for women is to
wash (or “cleansing”), then
hydrate (with a “serum” that often contains hyaluronic acid, which retains moisture)
followed by application of an
occlusive oil that prevents the moisture from leaving the skin
and finally sunscreen.
So the saddle soap is the washing,
the salve is like the serum
the leather oil is akin to the occlusive oil and
the wax is like the protective sunscreen.
I think the logic of the oil after the salve is to hydrate the leather first and then lock in the moisture.
Don’t pronounce the L, man

I’ve been dunking my boots in hot water and using dish soap
Dear God man you're better than that
Don't forget to put them in the oven on low heat, helps 'em dry quick!
Lame commercial.
Sa/ve?! No way, it rhymes with valve.
Big shill energy with this one
LMFAO😂😂😂
Yeah I think that wasn’t a good choice for the rough out
Chris Chase complains about using animal products on an animal product, leather. Plus beeswax and lanolin are animal products. Lots of contradictions.
I get it you want to do paid content but this is too much. I don’t want to watch a 20 minute infomercial for otter wax.
boots ruined
How so?
@@dstrbd223 boots will no longer have that suede like nap. the lighter color is gone.
@@666Necropsy That’s personal preference. They’re not “ruined” just because you don’t like the way they look. Waxed flesh is a very popular leather for boots, especially ones that see a lot of wear. As they wear, they get an awesome patina.
@@dstrbd223 if you like waxed flesh then buy that.
@@dstrbd223 I love the look of waxed flesh out. It's also very functional
