I followed this video down to the smallest detail. 5 days I commented that my 9 month old kitten hated my new kitten , we were on day 3 .. but we’re on day 8 now and they’re best buddies today. They slept together on the sofa , they were grooming each other. Playing peekaboo in the pop up tunnel, I’ve only had to separate them once today. I’m so happy they’re getting along !!
im on the same situation, my 8 month old hates the new 1 month old kitten :(, what do you recommend? it's day 3 and at least the old cat can now tolerate the kitten being within 3 feet of distance from her, but any closer she's hissing and in distress. Still progress since in day 1 the mere smell the kitten left on our clothes was enough to make her hiss and send her into hiding! She still doesnt like the smell if it's too strong lol.
I have a 2 year old neglected boy I'm trying to introduce to a 14 yr old grumpy senior ...😅😅 The boy is very docile and the girl cat is super grumpy of "newness" never seen a human or animal other than me, my mom n some occasional mice 😅 wish me luck 🤞🏾
I'm going to be introducing my 2 new kittens to my 2 older resident cats. My resident cats are 11 and 13 and more laid back and don't play as much. I was originally only going to get one kitten but decided to get another so they'd have each other to play with. I got the first one yesterday, he's 4 months old. And I'm getting the other one tomorrow, he's 2 months. I'll have to introduce them to each other and then to my older cats. I'll update this post with how it goes 😊 Edit. All my cats are bffs now ☺️
When I was 11 years old that I became best friend to a stray cat. He stuck around the house for a month and a half before adopting him into our home. We had a cat before him. The 2nd cat was introduced towards the 1st cat. They started to played and wrestling in the living room. They became friends to each other. This happened in mid November 1981. The 2nd cat was my cat. He did liked my sister and my parents. I was so lucky to have them in my life.
Day one on cat introduction here. I tried the classic introduction way but my dear resident cat accidently saw the new rescue as I was sneaking out of her room🙈 she was afraid for HOURS😓 I felt so guilty…completly overwhelmed. and I started asking myself if this really was a good idea😭😭😭 is this normal? Does anyone else sit and wonder if it was the right thing to do to adopt another cat?😰🙈
I'm 6hrs in, my resident cat is ok, but now hiding under the bed but seems to come out every now and then, but doesn't want to play or anything. New kitten is in our study and is happy and doing his thing. A lot of scent swapping. But really trying to spend a good amount of time with both cats. Have you had much progress so far?
@@LukaD90 hang in there! 🐾We had a tough first week, then it changed for the better. Our resident cat was free roaming in the apartment and the new kitty was in the bedroom for a week. They got to sniff eachothers rooms a couple of times. Then they met. It was a bit of hissing from the resident cats side but she quickly stopped to run and hide, so that was a progress. We are 2 weeks in today and all I can say is hang in there, it takes time.
@@illmatic9480 They are great! 😍😺😺I’m so happy we didn’t give up even thou it wasn’t easy the first 7-10 days.. it got better and better. We adopted a 8year old and already had a almost 3 year old, both spayed females. The 8 year old is so full of energy, my goodness😄😄 she can play and jump for hours. She is very affectionate even though we didn’t have her since she was a kitten. She loves to sleep on our chest and cuddle really close. Our resident cat is slowly learning to be more brave and now almost 4 months in they even play together😸😸💕🐈🐈❤️
@@moseszainal4119 We had him for about a month. Him and the older cat never got to meeting. We just couldn't handle him. He liked to bite lot. Especially our faces when we were sleeping. It ended up being more of a foster situation, he is now living happily with another family
Choosing the right cat?? 😅😅 What if your Dad died two weeks ago and you gotta take them on? And then introduce them to your 17 year old cat?! Not asking for a friend.
I had no idea that female cat chase more and male cats wrestle more - my male Russian Blue cat that everyone mistakes for a female just proved once again he prefers the female play... we always chase each other around the house, and almost never wrestle, and this really makes me at ease because we just adopted a female cat - picking her up in 14 days and watching all your videos in the meantime, as there is no way our resident Russian blue will stay away from another room for 7 days... at least he so far did amazing with all cats he saw irl, and he is the most gentle peaceful and curious cat I have seen - so I know he is probably the one who told me to adopt another cat :D Now I can ease and feel that they will be fine, as I chose the female to be of similar personality
My husband and I are not first time cat owners, but the cats we had prior to our current ones belonged to his sister before they belonged to us. After we lost Max last year (the last of his sister's cats) to Old age, we adopted Chip. And he was the first one either of us ever went out and chose. After a while though, we noticed that he seemed to get lonely when we weren't home, so we adopted a friend for him named Bitty. So this is the first time we've had to introduce cats to each other. On paper, with what we knew about the process at the time, Bitty seemed like she would be a good fit. She's close to Chip's age and she was listed as "good with other cats." But as her name implies, she's small and she's timid. And Chip grew since we got him, so now he's rather large compared to her, and has started chasing her around the house all the time. We've got separate food/literboxes, etc. And we make sure to play with him to help burn off that energy, but he still chases Bitty when she doesn't seem to want to be chased. We're still looking for solutions. This is the first time we've had to introduce cats to each other
Wow this wasnt helpful at all lol "chose your cat" listen, i never chose ANY of my cats, theyre all from the damn streets and im sure the majority of people are the same. 🙄🙄🙄
Yep new cat stayed in my garage for days. He made my garage his home. He is from the streets. He is hissy and doesn’t really get along well with my other animals. I don’t know what to do.
My 4 year old cat is fine with my 2 year old foster cat hisses at her and growls I thought it would be the other way round 😢 I’m praying they get along.
We are on day 11. Things going well. Letting kitten get much closer now & resident 2 cats have calmed down a whole lot. Kitten is half sister to one of my cats so she fits right in in the looks dept. They come face to face but don’t touch. No hissing now.
I live in a small studio room in a garage and just adopted a kitten. My 1 1/2 yo cat is a little catty toward him. But I will stick to these strategies! Your videos are bringing me some peace.
I do have a concern tho. If you don’t mind. I am day 2. My resident cat is having a little bit of an appetite issue. I’m sure it’s the stress. But I am just hoping that my resident cat doesn’t change his personality permanently and he will be back to normal when they get acclimated. They have not fought. But there has been meows, hisses, growling and a swat or two from the older cat. I was just wondering if the resident cat personality change is just temporary. Thank you so much.
@@monsieurtn so far so good! I woke up at 5am to the sound of them chasing each other and playing. Now my resident cat Lucifer just hisses occasionally but almost in the tone of an annoyed older brother. They’re doing way better than when I posted my comment! I followed your steps as you put them. I’m very grateful! I have only seen improvements each passing day. 💕
Introducing cats is like the borg .... older cat: i am alpha cat you will bow down to me and be assimilated. RESISTANCE is futile ... followed by head bops 😂
Yes! I'm introducing my daughter's 1yr old cat to my 6 yr old cat. Both male. My daughter's cat wasn't raised with kittens and is a little timid around my cat. Been 4 days. Some play together. My cat hisses, but no more growling.
My cat is the calmest most gentle loving cat ,i tried to introduce the new kitten to her she was very chill about it but the kitten went straight for the jugular
I’m introducing 2 cats right now that I got at the same time, they are also the only cats in the house and I’ve tried the slow introduction process with a couple of exceptions. One is male and 1 year old, gentle, seemingly passive, anxious (trembles mildly when he leaves his hiding spot). The other is 5 months old, female. She is very confident, still learning not to use her claws for everything, likes a lot of activity. The first time I introduced them briefly the younger cat just hissed and tried to attack the older cat, the older cat gently pat her then went to his hiding space, I decided to let them remain separate for the day. The second time, I used treats and a laser to interrupt any signs of aggression, minimal hissing, and no stalking, but they start using 1 (of 2) litter boxes, repeatedly trying to claim it back and forth multiple times. The younger cat starts to swipe, the older cat this time reciprocated but no blood, or injuries thankfully. The older cat again goes to his hiding place. I decide to separate them again. 😞 How can I give the anxious cat more confidence and the younger cat more chill?
Hi! Looks like the younger cat has a bunch of energy that you might need to expend before they meet. That will help a lot. For confidence, this is easy! Just give them spots that they can escape without the younger one following. In this situation the only time you want them to be together is: 1. After the kitten had a good play session 2. When they're both hungry!
@@monsieurtn Thank you for the advice! You're right, I had played with her before the second introduction attempt and she was a lot less wound up. I will try again with your advice, thank you!
I have two cats ,first one since it was 5 week's had him neutered at 5 months, only cat , few weeks ago, a friend of mine, gave another one, female took her in ,separate them, took vet spaded, it's not working out, the male,is stalking her pouncing on her, eating her food and his food, pouncing on her biting her, have any suggestions.
Thank you. I'm currently introducing a cat from rescue, I have two 'middle aged' cats and the new one is a similar age. I was dreading the introduction ! but couldn't refuse this adorable cat a chance of a better and loving home and cat Mom ! but having watched your video I realised I had already done/doing most of the things you suggest, and have not had too bad a time. A little hiding, not much because I blocked off places, some refusal of food which was distressing but has now gone back to normal, they now keep a respectful distance with no nastiness but I feel they will be getting along much better soon ! all this in only a week ! The only thing I don't have is vertical climbing structures but am looking into those now.
Thank you so much for making this video, you don't know how much you're helping me out. I failed the traditional method and had to start from 0 again. But then I fell ill and had to have them in the same room (because I cant leave the kitten for too long lest he feels neglected). With the little energy I had, I decided to use the principles you explained here. watched over them, separating when necessary and made sure everyone took things slowly. It's only day 5 but they're already eating next to each other, meaning that they are already willing to share resources which in my book is a great progress. Will continue to watch over them for at least 2 days more!
Thank you for sharing the information. I recently adopted a playful 1 year old male and have a 14 year senior female I have had for years and I am getting off to a dificult start. I had another female cat she lived with for years before she passed 2 years ago so I though she would be easy to get her on board with a new cat but it has been a challenge so far. I am keeping them seperate and feeding them on the opposite side of the door at the same time but trying to figure out how to get the older female on board. When she does see him she hisses at him. I has been just 2 days and I want to make it work. Seeing your video tells my it is not an ideal situation but I want to still figure this out so everyone is happy.
I'm going through this right now. I already had two male tabbies. One is 14 yrs, the other 2 years. Rescues. I brought the two year old home when he was one 1 year old and it went pretty good. They are now friends. But, fast forward to two weeks ago. I rescued a feral cat who has been living in bushes outside a grocery store. He has had a rough life, and to my knowledge only been around other cats he had to fight for food. I had him neutered, micro chipped, he had so many fleas and ear mites and was rail thin. Now, he is doing great with me. Wants to be held constantly and loved on. I have put him in my home office and put a screen door up so the cats can see each other. I feed them right at the screen door so they can see each other and eat together. My two year old wants to be friends SO bad. He and the feral cat actually mimic each other, roll on their backs and stare at each other upside down. No growling, no puffed tails. But when I let him out so they can be together, my 2 year old is just TOO excited for a friend and wants to be close right off the bat. So the feral jumps him and he is terrified. I haven't even tried to introduce the 14 year old. I'm afraid the feral cat will have to live alone in my office forever. H-E-L-P!
Got a female kitten (15 weeks old now) a month ago, and we actually picked up her brother because he did not get picked up by the buyer for odd reasons. So now we're in the phase of introducing the two siblings, although they probably do not remember each other at all. xD We're on day 2 and live in a small apartment, so there's still a lot of hissing and growling, but hey, no fights at all yet even though they have been very close a few times. Thanks for your videos!!
@@monsieurtn They are snuggling, licking each other and playing. No growling or hissing anymore. They are the best of friends!! Thanks for your videos, helped out a lot =]
@@michelletabone8240 I basically took the new one home, seperated them by a door (toilet) and there was a gap under the door, so they could sniff each other, raise their little fur and get all anxious, excited and angry I guess. Lasted for only like 30 minutes, then we just let them do their thing. It only took a week for them to be the best of friends. They cuddle, they play, they wash each other, all that good stuff.
We found two feral brothers, about 6-7 weeks old, two and a half months ago. We have two adults who are 10 and 12 years old. It has taken this long for us to finally let the babies run around the house with the other two. The last three nights were a bit nerve racking but so far, other than getting our toes bit up the first night, things are better than I thought. The babies are wonderful. There is still hissing and growling from the adults but no violence. Everyone is just curious and cautious. The biggest problem is the adults are less active and the babies want to get to know them and sometimes run right up to them and the adults get annoyed and hiss or growl. But we try to always have a treat when everyone is together and we pet and talk to everyone the same. No admonishing.
@@ijustrealllylikecats it's been over a year and everyone has adapted well. We even brought in a fifth kitty from a shelter (I was very nervous). We used the same methods but worked quicker and it worked. So we are very happy. We now have five total at our place. It's great except the cost of litter and food is up. But we always think that dogs would eat so much more and we would have to go outside several times a day. Kitties are the best. ❤️
We started with slow introduction with my 1 yr old resident female and 4 month old new female. The became comfortable with each other eating on different side of doors, then baby gate. First face to face went well but the second the resident cat wants to follow kitten around and smell her, kitten wants to get away and explore or wants to play. Resident does not want to play with her at this point. Resident almost seems afraid of all that energy.
Mine and my partners situation is very similar, a 1 yr old female (Mercy) and 4 month old male (Bruno). They are quite civil when there is a barrier between them but once they’re put together his energy is way too much for her. How are yours doing now? I’d love to hear how long your introduction process has taken and what their relationship is like now ☺️
@@jimmyhopkinsman They are doing so much better now! They wrestle and play but also do their own thing. They will even sleep near each other sometimes. I really recommend playing with the little one a lot! Let him get lots of energy out with you! And I think it just takes time for them to learn each others language. One thing that really helped us is a puppy play pen. We put the younger one in there to play and the older one got used to her jumping at her while she couldn't actually get to her.
Friend, the Bengal and gray cat in your video are exactly like mine! Funny. Even, my Bengal loved my new gray kitten. Within a day the Bengal started grooming the new gray kitten.
Thank you for this video! Now i feel much more confident that i made the right choice to get another male kitten so they can wrestle! 😄 my resident cat is only 3 and still very playful so i think everything will be alright ❤
I brought a new male kitten home yesterday and they are already sleeping together and playing. Everything went much better than expected! I'm so happy that my boys are bonding. :)
Hello I hope you see this. Trying your method and everything is seeming to work out for the most part. I was wondering if you have any tips if the resident cat isn’t focusing on toys when trying the play/distract method, but focusing on the new cat?
I have four cats, all female. Misha about a year old, the last one I adopted arrived about a month ago. I did not perform the no isolation method, always watching all of them. During the firsts weeks, no many hiccups on the early days, all worked fine, everyone arrived to eat when I poured food on their separate dishes, no problems with the litter box. But as time grew by, Schnell the youngest of the original cats, around three years old, became aggressive towards Misha. I had a two week trip planned and I hoped that my brother, who is my roommate, was able to take care of the bunch, his girlfriend ran into some serious responsibilities, leading to a minimum care for the cats. As I returned from the trip, I found that the relationship between Schnell and Misha worsened. I isolate Misha for a couple of days, but she keeps meowing. I have tried to be present with all of them trying to keep the environment tranquil. Aggressions have lowered by a bit, but what would you recommend in this situation. I have noticed that Misha marks territory and I believe that upsets Schnell?
I am having difficulty in introducing my 7 month female and 5 months old male. The female is spayed. She is too aggressive. Afraid that the younger one will be injured. They go full-on bunny kicks on each other. It's scary. Or am I too afraid? They both are rescue kittens. Younger one unplanned who came to me with an injured leg, now healed. So no time to plan for isolation.
i have a 1 year old female and 2 resident females (4y and 1y) and it feels hopeless 😣 they don’t even just regular right. they full on street fight and hair flies around and i feel someone will die 😣😣😣 i need help and nothing seems to work
My new kitten (5 months, male) keeps putting his paws under the bathroom door and my resident cat (2 years old, female) keeps hissing and launching at his feet. How do I correct this behavior?? Is this normal? I’ve never even heard my sweet kitty hiss before so i’m nervous :(
I am doing my best introducing my 2 yr old female cat to the new 3 month old female kitten. I have the kitten in a spare bedroom. Her food, water, litter box, toys and bed are in there. I put a piece of plexiglass infront of the door. Both cats can see each other and I feel better knowing each are safe. I have put the older cat in another part of the house and let the kitten roam the house for a bit - putting her scent around. On day 7 I let them be in the same area together. It went well, minimal hissing from older cat. I did this 3 times that day for about 10 minutes each time. I did this again the next day. This morning I had them in the same area and I saw and heard the older cat hiss and growl at the kitten. I quickly tried diverting their attention to toys. I am terrified that if I let them stay in the same area together - someone will get hurt. I've had the older cat for a little over a year. I rescued her from the shelter when she was 11 months old. She was in a room full of other cats, so I thought she would do well with a playmate. Any advice from anyone would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
My resident cat is a 9 year old female. I picked up a stray this weekend, he is a male and i suspect he is around 2 months old. got him a home base in my study. Just the smell of the kitten drives my cat insane. a lot of hissing and a lot of hiding so far. Since things are kinda stressful for the resident cat right now I am going to do this extremely slow. the kitten is extremely high energy and seems very sociable which should help when the resident cat realizes he's not a threat. will probably delay the site swapping until I get them acquainted with each other's scent by swapping blankets here and there
Well then I’m screwed….. I’m picking up my 15 week old kitten this weekend and introducing her to my 11-year-old male resident cat. Should be good times.🤦♂️
What do you do during the first nights of introduction? Separate them between rooms? one person sleeps with one cat in a room while another person with the other cat in another room?
For the first nights of introduction, I don't do anything special. The cats will stay in the same rooms (or separate rooms if you're doing the separation method). The cats will get exhausted just from watching and dealing with each other, they will usually sleep most of the night. Rarely ever does something happen. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much!! A lot of useful information!! I have a quick question. I live by myself in an apartment with my 9 month old cat. I adopted her last year. She is usually calm but I am nervous bringing a kitten home. I have plenty of time to supervise since I'll be on vacations and now I know I will get another female kitten for better adjustment. But since I am by myself, what would you recommend the sleeping arrangements to be? My cat usually roams around at night then wakes me up for cuddle time. Thank you!!
Great video! 😻 I find it amazing how well you introduced your cats in such a small place, they seem so harmonious and happy. I wanted to ask, what if the new cat is adopted from a shelter....? I would love to know as much as possible about her but they simply don’t know. Our resident cat is soon 3 years, we had her since she was a kitten but she is not super social (even though we try really hard to please her in every way😅)... she is half scottish fold and half persian. the one we might be adopting is 7 and very cuddly. Also female, but we don’t know her history. Would that be a problem you think? Many thanks for your great videos🙏🏼😻
We've adopted two 'babies', they turn 2 months today actually, and we have a 'senior' kitty, Lambeau, who is 16, so in 'cat years', yes, he's the 'get off my lawn' kitty... 😆 We get to pick up Ole & Ava tomorrow & bring them to their 'new forever home', so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. I did make over & 'kitty proof' the guest room, & set up their new beds in there so they'll have their own space when they need to get a little time apart & each they &/or Lambeau need a break. We fully plan to make sure Lambeau still gets his individual 'Mommy/Daddy & Lambeau time' so he knows he's not being replaced. Oh & like Lambeau, we plan to have Ole & Ava spayed/neutered when our vet suggests they're old enough.
I had a question about the age-gap. I have a older cat of 14 that is still extremely playful, has the zoomies a lot and in general is pretty restless when it comes to breaking my appartement down. But also super cute and cuddly! My initial thought would be to get a kitten since they would probably vibe more compared to introducing a older cat that just wants to sleep most of the day. Is my decision for a kitten in this case a good idea?
I hope mine adapt well. My new cat is coming from a shelter and was in a room with several cats and got along well. They are both around the same age, both females, well one is a hermaphrodite and I declare she. Haha. Very sweet, petite and girly to me.
Hi, we have a 2-3 year old timid lady cat, she has grown up with another cat that sadly died. Can we best take one kitten, or two at the same time? Will the two kittens just mostly play with eachother?
I have a 12 year old bengal who wants to sleep all the time but recently rescued a 5/6 month old kitten who is very outgoing and active. We've opted to adopt another 5/6 month old kitten to match activity while my old cat sleeps.
@@strangetraveller7399 Much better. It took 4 months of working with them daily, separating for a day when the stress became too much was a must though. Now the older cat is starting to not hiss or try to attack them and they are beginning to play on & off (chase, lol) I believe by the time a year roles around they will be buddies though. The two kittens bonded fully already which helped my older cat see them play and engage. She learned through observation how to play with other cats. My advice to anyone going through a similar situation is patience & go back to step 1 as many times as necessary.
Im experiencing quite the opposite right now. We just got a kitten a couple of days ago and we already had a 4yo cat. The kitten feels right at home (no hiding what so ever) and is the one starting hissing at my adult cat! He even showed signs of wanting to spray the door the adult cat uses to go outside (we have stopped that from happening a couple of times and are keeping him away from the door now). The adult cat is outside a lot now avoiding the kitten (he always goes out when the kitten is walking around too) and he only hisses at the kitten when he comes too close or near his food. We are really sad for our adult cat and are wondering whether we should bring the kitten to live with this brother who is adopted by a friend of ours. 😔
That's a confident kitten! Yes, it can be difficult to do introductions when one cat has outdoor access since you have to figure out a time when the cats are together to do the food or play strategies. For the spraying problem, the kitten is showing that the door is an important area for it to put its scent there. Maybe consider putting a litter box or scratching post near to that area so the kitten can put its scent in other ways (and not spraying). How old is the kitten? If he's old enough to spray or wants to spray, then maybe it's a good idea to get him neutered just in case it becomes a habit.
@@monsieurtn The wierd thing is that he is only 12 or 13 weeks old, so it's quite early to spray I believe. But I don't know what else an elevated shaking/vibrating butt towards the door could mean =') So neutering will probably take some time as here it is advised to do that around 6 months old. We are working on getting the kitten in a feeding routine, he was free fed when he was living with his mom and siblings. Trying the hunt, catch, eat, sleep thing but it is not as easy as it sounds ^^' But I will sure look into something to get his scent there without the need to spray, thank you for the tips!
@@icroknit2895 Great! Ah yes kittens that young will "phantom spray", possibly learned from his mother. Anyways, my youngest Loki did that a lot but never actually sprayed sprayed. I wouldn't be too worried about it for a kitten that young! But putting some sort of scent marker there is a good idea!
I’m introducing my Russian Blue mix to my new ragdoll kitty as of yesterday but I’m trying a different technique….I have brought my kitten out of my room in her cat carrier that used to belong to my Russian blue mix and setting boundaries for her to meeting the new kitty. They have not met up close out of the carrier yet but there’s been a lot of progress with this technique. I’m taking it at a slow pace due to my cat’s temperament and the fact my ragdoll is pretty curious.
Just got new kitten today and they already slowly met but my current cat was not about it at all. I hope it’s not too late already. My current kitten is 5 months and the new kitten is only 9 weeks so thought it would be easier. I know it’s only day 1 so I’m hanging in there by I just feel so bad already.
Hey I’m new to the cat community mainly because I’ve been a dog person my entire life. My fiancée recently brought home a lost kitten, 2 1/2 months at the time. Later I decided to adopt another kitten around the same age a month later. Due to an URI the cats have been separate for about 3-4 days but after recovery from the URI I introduced them and it seems the rescue is preying on the adopted cat. I’m confused on what to do…
My situation is unique. Previous best friends have become enemies after we changed house. They are litter mates even and still cant stand each other. Having to keep them separate otherwise the docile one is stuck under the bed or some other hiding spot all day and night. So I am having to give them separate areas for now but this cant go on forever. They are 11months old both of them. Any suggestion?
Any thoughts on introducing a 6-8 month old cat (male recently nuetered) who was an outdoor cat to 2 year old brother and sister cats as well as a 3 year old male? The problem seems to be with the younger cat, He is super chill with humans however he immediatly attacts the older cats. He has been isolated now in a room for 10 days, We have done the food and treat trick on opposite sides of the door. We have swapped bedding for scent recognition, We have let the new cat explore the rest of the house (while the others were sleeeping) Even got a cat harness and leash to be able to control any aggression if he escapes from his area. Which he did once and immediately attacted the older cats and me when I was seperating them. Also note that we have 3 of the pheramone diffusers around the house. Just give it more time?
I have a turteshell cat that came to us and even leaves the apartment building and comes back but the problem is once she saw my male tabby she been hissing and growling at him and he keeps wanting to see her and launches at her
Anyone have any advice for me on two adult bonded males, 5 and 6, lived together their whole lives, surrendered to a cat rescue, fostered because they were hiding and not eating, adopted by me and everything was great. Two weeks in, something scared one at night, misplacing the aggression on the other. Now, they both act like they have never met. The initial fight was shockingly violent, in the middle of the night, but no injuries and the aggressor has been in isolation since last Thursday. Just now coming out of hiding but isolated behind a screen, still snarling and hissing at the other cat and an occasional hiss and growl for me. Any ideas for reducing the reacquaintance stress and trauma? Will they ever be able to cohabite and be left together at night?
I have a 7 year old cat who’s kind of timid and a 3 year old cat who’s fearless and dominant. Today I brought home a 4 month old Maine Coon kitten… 2 year old puffed up, sniffed and gave one small hiss. 7 year old just came for sniffs and got hissed at by the kitten. No swats from anyone. Any tips for this new band of brothers? 😊
We just got a new cat(1), but my parents decided to introduce him to my older cat (3) and dog (10). The cats can’t be around each other without hissing and growling and the new cat growls at my dog when he approaches. We just got him yesterday, and my parents insist on just ripping off the bandaid and letting them be around each other, but I’m not so sure. Any ideas?
I think it depends what kind of cats you have. I have a 15 year old who lost her brother a year ago. I thought it was time maybe for her to have a friend bc I’m not home much and travel a lot for work and I have to bring her with me. I watched videos , read etc and went to shelter three times trying to figure it out. I thiight I found a good match. An 8 year old that was already in a home with a sibling. I tried everything from swapping blankets , rooms , the screen. Nothing worked. My 15 year old was attacking the door at 3, 4 5 am. Attacking the screen door , she stopped popping , ate less. However , I didn’t have much time to try to do this introduction. I have to travel a lot for work and have to take her with me and I just can’t take two cats with me who can’t be together for 2 seconds. I’m bringing the adopted cat back to shelter soon. I’m calling them tomorrow to schedule a time to bring him back. I think you need a lot of time and patience to do this. I don’t have time or patience for this. I know I will not ever be trying this again
my 4 month old kitten is throwing a hissy fit about our new 1 month old. she growls and hisses, so we're trying to separate them for now before they get used to each other.
hi, so i have a resident 8month and i just recently adopted another 8month tabby about 2 days ago now and so far i have been doing the traditional introduction. but since i live with my mother and 2 other siblings we dont exactly have the room in our apartment to continue to do the traditional for much longer. considering i don’t have my own room in this apartment and im borrowing my brothers to do separation. both cats are sweethearts when alone but just seem to be very territorial off of first eye contact. i didnt like the sight of any growling or hissing whenever they come into sight of eachother so i immediately shut it down whenever it goes left but the more i watch your videos and read comments the more i learn that hissing and growling is not the biggest problem. even though i started off with the traditional method i want to drop it and just try your method of just letting them figure it out with proper guidance and rewarding. i do have one question though how do you feel about punishment as in spraying a water bottle at them when they hiss and growl and immediately shutting down the negative staredown as soon as it happens. would you consider starting off the traditional process only to drop it? is that ideal?
Bruh I'm rescuing a cat from my sister's in laws who were about to put him in adoption and I have no idea what his brand of food is, his behavior, likes and dislikes, I'm just diving head first cause he needs me and from my cat community they say the cat chooses you when you adopt what do you mean look for a personality that matches my old cat, if one is lazy and the other active they are fine still happy cause one plays and the other relaxes
Not sure how much, if any aggressive I should allow between my 1 year old cat and my 11 week old kitten. The okder one "fixates"... regardless of food , laser toys etc... Once this begins...all he wants to do is chase, mount and bite his neck. I try to leave it for a second so he can establish his dominance. But then the kitten will cry out(no blood) and I try to stop it and separate them again for another try. What are your thoughts?
Im going to use these next week! I am introducing 2 sister kittens to my 2year old boy. They'll all be neutered and my cat is an abyssinian so let's hope the play will help and they can all play together. He was raised till he was 16 weeks with a LOT of other cats and his siblings so let's hope that that helps. Cant really use the separation technique since we knly have a door for the bathroom and I dont want to lock any of the cats up in there for a week lol. I'm very excited though! I hope this helps
I misunderstood something and got a girl kitten to be friends with my 2 year old boy. I should have watched this video before because he DEFINITELY plays rough
HELP: i’m working with a stray cat who is not ready to be inside 24/7 yet. He gets panicked. so he’s inside outside and his nails are long and sharp because he needs them outside. But I’m afraid that if he and my resident cat get into it, somebody will get seriously injured. I don’t know what to do. I can’t cut the nails until he is 100% indoors but also can’t risk harm to my other guy. advice?
I have a 2 yr old (F) tuxedo and I recent got a 2mon old (M) tuxedo we have been trying your method but my older cat will come in to play and then as soon as my kitten moves to play back the older cat hisses and runs away. We are now on day 7 of having him and I feel like I’m struggling I even reached out to my vet for help but they never called me back please help
It takes WEEKS. Hissing and running is really good. What I would worry about is an aggressive cat that bites and scratches when threatened. Play with both of them when they're in the room together. Feed them their favorite treats at the same time. Feed them meals together. It took me 3 weeks to get my cats to like each other and now they are best friends.
Have two 10 month old moggy kittens and two 8 year old ragdoll cats, im struggling with introductions, can you give me any advice? I have 3 females and 1 boy
I have two older boys Venom (2 years) and Gizmo (1year) i recently got a new Kitten Yuumi (3-4months) is this a good age combination? Im on day 3 and the boys just keep hissing at her. Ive played with all of them at the same time, fed at the same time and nothing... I mean they can get a little closer to each other, but it still ends up with one of the boys hissing at her. And she came from a multicat home... I don't know what to do!
Yesterday I was able to get the pregnant stray tonkinese (i think shes only around 1-1.5 years old) I've been caring for for about 2 months into my house, but I've got a about 4 month old kitten already in the house and while the tonk isnt seeming to have any stress or problems, the kitten is hissing (she never hisses) and I just want to make sure she is comfortable and I really need them to get along because I'll need to be caring for the mom and her new babies within the next month (estimating) and keeping at least one of her kittens as well (we have multiple people already saying theyd like to take others when theyre born). I also have a dog who was perfectly fine with the mom a centimeter away on the other side of a window screen, but now that shes inside shes upset too. I really dont want to screw this up but im worried, not entirely knowing what is best
Any tips are welcome I have a a 1 year old female tabby and I just got a 8 week old ragdoll less than 24 hours ago my 1 year old is definitely curious with the kitten she will walk up to the kitten but when the kitten does any movement my older cat will hiss she is weird she doesn’t like the kitten to walk past her but will walk right up to the kitten and then hiss because she’s to close . She will also lay at a pretty close distance from the kitten but will hiss while laying there . Is this a good first step for almost a day in ? Any help is welcome .
Unfortunately almost none of these applies to our situation. We have 2 boys that are about 8 years old. A local stray that’s probably about a year old has chosen us as his humans. We’ve just started the introduction process, we’ll probably have to do it the traditional way with the isolation.
In 2 days, I will be bringing in 2 years old declawed cat and 3 months old kitten. During the isolation period, hould I stay in the same room with the kitten or the cat? For how long? Then who should I bring into?
My female cat keeps attacking my new kitten 7 months old. I think she thinks he’s prey and is territorial. She even tries to fight Him through a screen. Do you have any advice?
Had a new 8 week old male kitten 4 days ago and we followed the isolation advice. Yesterday we began feeding her on one side of the isolation space and our resident 8 year old female on the other side of the door. The kitten was unconcerned but our resident cat was not happy and hissing! I guess we have a long way to go. Also, the older cat clearly does not want to eat at the top of the stairs! Any tips welcome!
@@NicoleZST Hi, Thank you for asking. We let the kitten down every day and the older cat hisses when the kitten tries to approach it. The kitten is very brave (or niaive) and now gets within a metre of older cat but its only a matter of time. What concerns me though is that the older cat ever since we have been bringing the kitten down, waits by the outside door to come in but is getting more and more reluctant to come in each time. I'm not sure what to do about that!
@@yinunit So you just let them meet without going through the whole introduction process? That’s brave! I’ve just moved on to the “sight” phase (smell-sight-physical meet), but I’m going a little faster than recommended, too. I’d like to think I know my resident cat pretty well and I really feel like she needs a little push, or we’ll end up stuck in the smell phase forever. Hope everything works out between your cats! And mine 🤞🏻
@@NicoleZST We did the whole introduction process and ended up having to give the kitten to friends after a few months. Sometimes it's just NOT a match. We decided our older cat was just way too stressed out and scared all the time and the kitten wasn't able to play with him anyway so it was best to find the kitten a better home. Literally 12 hours after the kitten left the older cat went back to being his happy self again. Idk if it's a smell thing, maybe some cat smells just aren't a match? But he was miserable for 3 months.
Great educational video and I've checked the other links too, however, I do have a question about how I move forward in my situation, which is slightly different. It's me and my cat, that will be the new kids on the block. I am taking over the lease of a tiny 2 room house and moving in with my 2yr old female rescue (with me since she was approx 10 wks). The elderly lady leaving, is unable to take her beloved, beautiful 2 yr old male rescue with her and I have said he can stay and live with us forever. (Both cats have be de-sexed). I have been visiting the house a couple of times a week, so he gets used to my smell and voice and I have taken over a blanket that smells of my female but he doesn't have anything I can bring back for her to smell. In May, we'll be sharing the house and I was wondering, following your guidelines, do I set up the activity room for my cat?
Hi! I'm in the process of introducing my resident 4-year-old cat to a six-month old kitten with a broken leg. The kitten has been prescribed cage rest and has to be monitored closely when he's out of his crate to make sure he isn't running, jumping, or climbing. This has made the introduction process pretty tricky, so I wanted to see if anyone has any advice. My partner and I did quarantine the kitten in a separate room for two weeks, which has been complicated because our apartment is so small, and resident cat seems a bit unhappy about having part of her territory cut off. We now have the kitten's crate in the bedroom during the day, and the resident cat in the main living area, and then in the evening we switch them. The only other room is the bathroom, which is not an option because it's too small for the crate to even fit. We started having them on opposite sides of the same room at dinner time, with one of us holding the kitten in a chair and the other playing with the resident cat. We've now gotten the kitten a harness so he can be on leash and walk around a little, and this seems to have been a breakthrough. The cats can now approach and sniff each other without any concern that the kitten might go running off and hurt his leg. I feel like we are on the right track, but about half of these little approach-and-sniff events ends without incident, and the other half of the time, someone hisses. Resident cat also sometimes goes to hide under the table, and the kitten cries at her. He seems to really want to play with her, and they both LOVE to play. But it's been a little over two weeks, and they still seem very cautious of each other. We don't want to hover too much, but we do need to be near the kitten with the leash so we can intervene quickly and easily if it seems like he might get hurt. He doesn't seem very aware of his injury at this point, and he obviously wants to run and jump around and do normal kitten things. I'll probably take another 3 weeks or so before he's cleared to do that, though. Does anyone have any experience with introducing cats when one of them is injured and needs to have their movement limited? Any advice on how to keep this process going smoothly? Thank you so much in advance!
I have an 8 month old calico female who is a deae but is a bit of a grump. She’s a rescue and today i came into possession of another rescue kitten this one 2 months old. Im a bit lost as to how to intruduce them. Rn we are all three of us on my bed, lucifer (the kitten) is inside a carrier with a bubble to see outside. Baelfi (calico) hisses and growls. Ive been trying to make a positive association but i def need tips
I have a stray kitten hanging out in my yard. It runs away easily. Need advice on how to get it to come to me. Do I trap it & bring it to a carrier in the house where it can see us & my other 8 year old cat.
Okay I brought my cat from my moms to my boyfriends. My boyfriend’s cat grew up with another cat and is declawed (approximately 8 yrs) my cat was a stray for 3 years then grew up with 3 dogs she is not declawed and approximately 7-8 yrs. Literally just today I brought her home. They seem to be curious but overnight I let the new cat have range of the apartment and the resident cat is sleeping with us closed in our room. What do I do
After 10 hours of wrestling when they first met, my two one-year-old kittens (estranged biological brothers) were somewhat peaceful for the next 10 hours. We'll see how this goes.
Oops adopted a 2 year old male and having a harder time introducing him to my 14-year old wallflower female He wants to wrestle and play, she is NOT into it I do hold out hope they will be friends eventually but it’s been about a month and he still kind of treats her like one of his cat toys and I only let them be together supervised by someone
so my grandma passed away 6 months ago and her cat has been alone for a year. I have been stopping over to feed her because we haven't found a home so I just took her in. my parents have 2 cats who are 7 years old almost 8 and my grandmas cat is 14. for now the cat is living in my bedroom which is big and her food and litter box is in there but what would be the best way to acclimate them together. She is also declawed.
Help! 5 year old female resident cat being terrorized by 8 month old new cat. New cat was living with two others peacefully at foster home but came to our house and has gotten out twice and attacked resident cat. Throws herself at the door full body. Scratches under the door when she sees a shadow. Stakes out the door. Resident cat is terrified, hisses just being carried into the room new cat was in most recently. Do we think resident cat could ever accept new cat?
Our newly adopted 2 year old female cat always goes on hunt my existing two year old male cat and a 8 year old male cat until I separate the female cat in a room from the other two male cats. The female cat was found on a street and was behaving much oppressively by going after my male cats for scratching and biting even my male cats tried hard to avoid her. She is always friendly with me and so lovely but I worry that my male cats will get tramau if i continue to push for an introduction as she always gows after them no matter what. What shouod I do.
Hopefully this tips will help me 😭 our 9 years old female which haven't seen never cat in her life... yesterday we bought 3monts old male Maine coon... keeping in saperated room and is just first day... but behind doors our old cat acting is terrible ... even jumping to the doors 😭
I am in same situation now a days can you please help me ?? Are they became friends then and how much tym she takes my cat is so aggressive...does they become friends?
i already ruined my cats introductions its been a few months already but the older cat hates and is terrified of the new one.. 2 male cats age like 1 and 3 .. am i hopeless?
I have three 4 year old cats and it's been a year i'm trying to introduce another 4 year old cat (which is their sibling). I AM trying the "not-let - them - see - each - other" method and the food trick, but it's not working. Should I try to introduce the New cat to one cat at a time?
At 7:25 what are all these components? They look like suction cup scratch posts up to a hammock type thing but none of these are referenced on the site. Thnx !
Our resident orange cat is 14 and we are introducing a 5 yrs old tuxedo. Oscar is the orange guy. Oscar will not go near the room where we have the new cat. Oscar even seems like he hates us.
What's the update now? @@kimutone2970
It can take a year for some cats (my cats!) the fact that they're sleeping together is incredible. I doubt this will ever be mine.
I currently have a 3-year-old male cat who is very calm. Should I get a 1-year-old male or female cat as a companion to pair with him quickly?
I'm going to be introducing my 2 new kittens to my 2 older resident cats. My resident cats are 11 and 13 and more laid back and don't play as much. I was originally only going to get one kitten but decided to get another so they'd have each other to play with. I got the first one yesterday, he's 4 months old. And I'm getting the other one tomorrow, he's 2 months. I'll have to introduce them to each other and then to my older cats. I'll update this post with how it goes 😊
Edit.
@@Spikypotato. how are the cats now?
@@illmatic9480 They are great! 😍😺😺I’m so happy we didn’t give up even thou it wasn’t easy the first 7-10 days.. it got better and better. She is very affectionate even though we didn’t have her since she was a kitten. She loves to sleep on our chest and cuddle really close. Our resident cat is slowly learning to be more brave and now almost 4 months in they even play together😸😸💕🐈🐈❤️
Yes right now, right this exact moment.
Well fuck i just got a 1 year old male kitten and I have an 11 year old female cat. Should’ve watched this first lol
We got my 15 year old cat a kitten after his sister died and they became best friends. Age doesn’t always matter
How did it go?
@@moseszainal4119 We had him for about a month. Him and the older cat never got to meeting. We just couldn't handle him. He liked to bite lot. Especially our faces when we were sleeping. It ended up being more of a foster situation, he is now living happily with another family
Cats do what cats do.
Choosing the right cat?? 😅😅 What if your Dad died two weeks ago and you gotta take them on? And then introduce them to your 17 year old cat?! Not asking for a friend.
Around 3 mins when they started playing together my heart melted.
Thanks for your comment! I'm glad the video was helpful!
This is the first time we've had to introduce cats to each other
Day 2 of introduction. Some hissing and swatting from older cat 8 ish months. Younger cat is curious 10 weeks. Good thing my boy loves food
How are they now. I am having difficult time with my kittens. 7 months female and 5 months old male. Female is spayed.
@@aliya9819 great they took a few months now grooming and playing.

Wow this wasnt helpful at all lol "chose your cat" listen, i never chose ANY of my cats, theyre all from the damn streets and im sure the majority of people are the same. 🙄🙄🙄
Hahaha. So furkin true. New cat coming tomorrow!!! I have a previously feral kitty now!!! I don't wanna upset her!!!
Yep new cat stayed in my garage for days. He made my garage his home. He is from the streets. He is hissy and doesn’t really get along well with my other animals. I don’t know what to do.
His point is still very relevant tho
My 4 year old cat is fine with my 2 year old foster cat hisses at her and growls I thought it would be the other way round 😢 I’m praying they get along.
Same. We put screen doors in the house to separate them. 😕 it's ugly.
Yes in most cases it’s just temporary! Give it a bit more time and it’ll work out! Try using a different food than you usually give them!
@@monsieurtn so far so good! I woke up at 5am to the sound of them chasing each other and playing.
In this situation the only time you want them to be together is:
1. After the kitten had a good play session
how did this turn out?
Got a female kitten (15 weeks old now) a month ago, and we actually picked up her brother because he did not get picked up by the buyer for odd reasons. So now we're in the phase of introducing the two siblings, although they probably do not remember each other at all. xD We're on day 2 and live in a small apartment, so there's still a lot of hissing and growling, but hey, no fights at all yet even though they have been very close a few times. Thanks for your videos!!
That's great! I hope they become best friends!
@@monsieurtn They are snuggling, licking each other and playing. No growling or hissing anymore. They are the best of friends!! Thanks for your videos, helped out a lot =]
I have 2 female siblings which like you I got at different time. How did you start to introduce them to each other ?
@@michelletabone8240 I basically took the new one home, seperated them by a door (toilet) and there was a gap under the door, so they could sniff each other, raise their little fur and get all anxious, excited and angry I guess. Lasted for only like 30 minutes, then we just let them do their thing. It only took a week for them to be the best of friends. They cuddle, they play, they wash each other, all that good stuff.
Exactly I'm in the same situation
Perfect! That's the way to do it!
Mine and my partners situation is very similar,
a 1 yr old female (Mercy) and 4 month old male (Bruno).
How did it go? I’m curious as my 10yo cat is not at all friendly with the 10 week old kitten.
Where did you get all of the cool cat items on the wall to lay down on?
Same here! Very old and lazy resident cat haha and energetic kitten. How is it going?
@@strangetraveller7399 Much better. It took 4 months of working with them daily, separating for a day when the stress became too much was a must though. Now the older cat is starting to not hiss or try to attack them and they are beginning to play on & off (chase, lol)
I believe by the time a year roles around they will be buddies though. The two kittens bonded fully already which helped my older cat see them play and engage. She learned through observation how to play with other cats.
My advice to anyone going through a similar situation is patience & go back to step 1 as many times as necessary.
We don't have the luxury of choosing which cat shows up on our doorstep. These hints are mostly for people who can choose their cats.
But I don't know what else an elevated shaking/vibrating butt towards the door could mean =')
So neutering will probably take some time as here it is advised to do that around 6 months old.
We are working on getting the kitten in a feeding routine, he was free fed when he was living with his mom and siblings. Trying the hunt, catch, eat, sleep thing but it is not as easy as it sounds ^^'
But I will sure look into something to get his scent there without the need to spray, thank you for the tips!
I had a 17 year old with 2 5 year olds and my female and him got a long rather well, played and everything.
Hey would love an update from you about how they are now
How are the things going?
i would also love to know because this is close to the ages i have currently!
Sir,
I just want you to know that Batman/Bane reference was not wasted.
Massively appreciated 👏😸
Thank you and best wishes.
your cat fountain looks so good😭 where did you get it from?🥺
I have a 7 year old cat who’s kind of timid and a 3 year old cat who’s fearless and dominant. Today I brought home a 4 month old Maine Coon kitten… 2 year old puffed up, sniffed and gave one small hiss. 7 year old just came for sniffs and got hissed at by the kitten. No swats from anyone. Any tips for this new band of brothers? 😊
Correction, my middle cat just turned 2 not 3 😮😮😅😅
We just got a new cat(1), but my parents decided to introduce him to my older cat (3) and dog (10).
Thank you for these tips! I had no idea that cats were neophilic!! Definitely learned some great things!
Sounds great! Good luck!
I can’t cut the nails until he is 100% indoors but also can’t risk harm to my other guy. advice?
Great video! This was super helpful and practical. Keep up the good work!! Thank you 🙏
What if I am introducing a Mature spayed female (8 years old) to a Senior spayed female (12 years old)?
First week for me my adult cat is still really territorial around me and her bed is there any ways to help or do I just let them bond more?
I have two older boys
Venom (2 years) and Gizmo (1year) i recently got a new Kitten Yuumi (3-4months) is this a good age combination?
Any tips are welcome
I have a a 1 year old female tabby and I just got a 8 week old ragdoll less than 24 hours ago my 1 year old is definitely curious with the kitten she will walk up to the kitten but when the kitten does any movement my older cat will hiss she is weird she doesn’t like the kitten to walk past her but will walk right up to the kitten and then hiss because she’s to close .
How are they now?
And mine 🤞🏻
How did that work out for you? I'm still on the smelling phase and I feel like my 3 year old cat needs a little push @@NicoleZST
I got my 8 week old cat about a week ago and just got my 6 month old cat but, the 8 week old keeps trying to attack the smaller cat
What brands is the snacks? Thanks
We'll see how this goes.
related: the kitten that has been with me for the most recent 4 months is more aggressive against the new kitten.
Oops adopted a 2 year old male and having a harder time introducing him to my 14-year old wallflower female
He wants to wrestle and play, she is NOT into it
I do hold out hope they will be friends eventually but it’s been about a month and he still kind of treats her like one of his cat toys and I only let them be together supervised by someone
so my grandma passed away 6 months ago and her cat has been alone for a year.

My cat is a year old. :) I want to get another one for her eventually. Maybe at the end of the year if it is possible.
My female cat is definitely more of a wrestler than a chaser. I hope she will get along with the male kitten that's coming.
