I can't get my head around anyone who thinks this is a decent game, so much wrong with it, am shocked how mainstream reviews are literally glossing over all the huge problems with this game and will literally accept any old shite as long as the combat allows you to roll around the floor like a complete prick.
I see people praising really terrible games in my gaming groups , I don't think they are capable of seeing problems or just don't care.... standards have been so low for so long ..many folks don't even really know what a good game Is ...console generation

It runs perfectly fine on my OLED. Get a better screen would be my advice. I heard this too from people using a monitor. The game doesn't currently support HDR so you need a decent display that can separate the light and dark areas properly. Basically something other than LED. The fire and smoke effects look fantastic in this game and actually run at the proper framerate unlike even some AAA releases do.

This game definitely took inspiration from God of War. The camera angle, the movement, and the combat feels like God of War. There is definitely room these days for a double A straight action title that doesn’t take itself too seriously and honestly this one is pretty fun if you’re not expecting a God of War level story along with it.
This game belongs to the PS1 era console RPG games that are barely games at all. They should be called 3D interactive novels, because they are basically asking you to do the bare minimum of pushing the story along in a linear highly restricted path and using ultra simplistic controls to just go through the motion for the sake of gameplay. I can understand those games existing in the environment back then when people were all ogling over the "next gen" 3d graphics and were satisfied by just being able to move around and do stuff. I got news for you: we're back at that era again, maybe worse, because the future is filled with pretty graphics and simplistic gameplay designed to get people hooked onto cloud gaming where your input doesn't even really matter anymore, and your job as a gamer is to pay the monthly sub for a service that lets you watch a game being played by itself. I guess most people are okay with that too judging by how many viewers a twitch stream gets. At least you can troll the twitch chat, in these games you're the one getting trolled.

This game actually seems to be pretty fun. No open-world, no end-game, no mtx, just like those shooters that we can finish within a weekend and move on to the next game. I'll wait for a sale. Thanks for your honest review.

To be fair, all of that is not specific to consoles. For some reason, that is the "standard" for how they think games have to be designed these days. Accessibility. Can't have anyone - literally anyone - not figure out how to play our game. The painting where you need to jump, and what you can grab onto needs to go. Tired of that years ago. Ruins exploration. Puzzles are too telegraphed, so if you are going to include them, don't also highlight the answer. They have also gone too far with attack telegraphing. Just have the enemy telegraph better. Don't need blue and red circles and attack indicators. There are a few game types where a flash on an unblockable makes sense, but I don't know what it is doing in all games. The infamous X-ray vision is pretty common too, just to make sure we aren't surprised.
These People would cry if they tried to play any old tomb raiders. Nothing glowed. You actually had to explore and occasionally get lost. I guess we were braver back then 😅
I’ve seen a huge divide on this game. You either love it or hate it. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if your niche is old school action games that put gameplay first, I recommend trying it out. I’ve been having a blast. Haven’t ran into any major glitches or bugs and I’m on a PS4. I certainly recommend playing on hard, even if you’re a casual player. Normal and below don’t require you to use much of your kit, which usually leaves the combat feeling stale and repetitive. This happens with a lot of combat-heavy games. Like Doom or God of War.

As a little kid I remember how cool it was to be able to get on top of the level in the underground mario levels, it felt like breaking the game, but you were meant to do it. DOOM, Serious Sam, Dusk, all of those games have a big component of "Can I Get Over There?". Same with Breath Of The Wild and a million other games. I simply have zero interest in a game that telegraphs exactly where I can go. "Hey buddy, look over here, do you see that glowing thing? That means you can go there!" I hate that. That's not exploration. That's a stuffy guided tour at some tourist trap.
God of War Ragnarök has chains everywhere, can't fall off edges, jumping sections and puzzles being spoiled by the characters but that game is 10/10 for me so personally I think I'll love this.

You used to be able to fall off things in console games too...they weren't all railroaded shit they are now. I remember the old "Indiana Jones and the Emperors tomb" game, or the crash series. And you could fall off shit in those games because you actually had to MAKE THE JUMP YOURSELF

It plays more like a cross between Gears of war and Devil May cry i think it's brilliant fun. So glad i got it despite all the negative Nancie's that just don't seem to like fun games anymore. Just switch targeting to manual mode and it is a ton of fun. Especially using the firearms.
Just bought the game. I’ll be honest I’m really enjoying it. It’s a nice linear game , where I can just turn my brain off and have some fun!!! I’ve been playing on steam deck , and while it has some stuttering issues overall im pleased with the game . Is it revolutionary ? Nope , just old school fun!
Many people liked the game for being traditional. The developers took a huge risk by picking this kind of setting since buyers dont seem to like these games according to statistics. Maybe you are just too old for action games.

Lets be honest, this is the type of game that you buy & play when you just want to turn off your brain and feel over-powered. While that is totally fine for some, its not fine for others who actually want to think while playing games. While I wouldn't be as harsh on this game, I simply acknowledge that its just NOT for me. However, the severe lack of enemy variety is a big turn off.
You know what, on PC they are about the same price, it's would be like walking into a car garage and being offered a Porsche or a Seat for the same money and buying the seat if you bought this lol
AND he thumbed up God of War 4 years ago which is basically the same combat system. Now, don't get me wrong, in MOST games I share the same opinion as Mack and def share the notion that the gaming industry is in decline (imho since 2010). but I have noticed a few things about Mack: 1. He reviews games and mostly never touches them again, even if they get better, fixed and have new content. Making his reviews not future proof unless he revisits them and "overwrite" his older reviews of games. 2. He hates something in one game and then months later doesn't mention the same thing in another game. Or he likes something in one game and months later hates the same thing in another game. He is not always consistent. With some things he is, like keybinding, console ports and performance (quality and FPS) but not always with actual game mechanics. 3. His reviews are starting to slowly turn to rage reviews.. maybe because he gets more likes with that. He uses gimmicky things like his "songs" to be funny or edgy or something which he used to not care about. I know gaming quality took a real turn for shit town, but it just feels like he went on the "Whining Train" for a reason.. He used to make a video like this: Tell us the game name, then description, then settings, then what he liked about it, then what he disliked about it, then if it was worth a buy and HIS reason for it in detail.. then it ended in a "sticker" at the very end, thumb up or down.. It was IMHO less opinionated and more "facts" compared to his "newer"review style and over time more "hypey" stuff got added. I still watch ALL of his reviews but they are not the same as years ago. He used to be a "must watch" before I would watch game trailers and read/watch other reviews before buying.. that's no longer the case though.
@@Devonaxx That's why I don't really put too much stock into what reviewers say, including independent ones. They play so many games for the purpose of a review to the point they forget criticisms made in other games. Or perhaps one game got a pass because of something else they like. I remember Mack having positive thoughts about Ghost of Tsushima, but the combat in that game was infinitely more boring. You had to use certain stances against certain weapons because... the game said so.
Yeah but stance in real life where good but the thing two games can have the same combat like in a game but one is good at it where it flows well and one does not. I mean god of war is not just the combat it’s also the story and the fact that most enemies you run into on the main area are level like five to maybe seven tops. I mean god of war to get the final trophy will take around 50 to maybe 70 hours depending on how many times you die and if keep going back to your house to talk to characters. But it’s probably only a 25 to 30 hour game in the main story. I mean that will take you about about a week or two depending on how many hours you play.

The typical "ign" type game sites gave this game good reviews. I was going to buy this. Then I thought it would be best to wait for Mack's review. I'm glad I didn't buy this console port.
As soon as you started pointing out the flaws I was like "this is a Spiders game" but it's Focus, which is essentially the same thing. Every 👏 game 👏 has 👏 the same 👏 mechanics 👏
it is fun combat which is the main thing and the voice acting is nowhere near as bad as people in reviews are going on about lol. I rather like it. It has a sarcasm to it always.

I had high hopes for this game, after playing this for several hours I have to say this review is pretty spot on. The bugs that I have encountered have been ridiculous, at one point I was stuck half in the floor during a boss battle, then i was stuck on a wall, then a cinematic froze the game and I finally just gave up. I find myself playing on my phone during the cinematic scenes and i usually play games because I love the storylines. I feel this could have been so much better. Well hopefully the Callisto Protocol will be everything I want!

I gave this a go three times, literally give the benefit of the doubt, uninstalling and reinstalling it 3 times, after so much of the same arena combat crap over and over and over and over, slow upgrade trees, completely uninteresting plot and characters with a lore that was both immensely deep AND boring, walking from prerendered cutscene to prerendered cutscene (that were about 6ft apart IN THE SAME BUILDING!), and not being allowed to backtrack, ever (So if you missed a secret? TOO BAD, restart the entire chapter/entire game!), etc etc, I got about 70% the way through the campaign and ended up selling it. Everyone screaming about how this was a call-back to the PS3/360 glory days of Devil May Cry and God Of War, what the hell are you lot smoking? 🤣 It's a shame, coz its a very cool premise, wrapped the most boring story and linear arena combat conveyer-belt gameplay I've ever seen in my entire life!
It's 40% cheaper than current AAA titles, playing co-op is enjoyable, the combat is good, where the punches, shots and powers feel weighty and the setting is great. Sure, the story is uninteresting (at least for me) and the dialogue is total w☥ but despite these flaws, I'm enjoying it. In a gaming world chock full of tedious FPS games, dozens of sequels, annual releases and greedy corporations bleeding their IPs dry, Evil West feels like a reminder that games are still for fun before MTs ruined the industry forever. Yes the gameplay may feel dated and it isn't revolutionising gaming but it isn't even trying to be something that isn't. With all this in mind, it's a new IP by a small studio, it's decent enough where I can forgive it for its limitations and I appreciate that it even exists, in the first place and as a result I both like and judge it for what it is, rather than what it is not... e.g. another AAA microtransaction laden sequel with no heart or soul.
I am not sure if you were trollin or what, but I feel sad for people that might miss out this game cause of this wierd rant/review. I finished it a few hours earlier, and it was super enjoyable, it left a nice feel after completing, its not an innovative masterpiece, and it's not an indie unappreciated gem, it is simply an action game with tight combat, super responsive controls, crisp environment and graphics, and most of all, it's enjoyable. I have seen you review much more shitty games in a more positive light that what you did here, but we all have bad days, and you might have played this one at a bad time, so i am just gonna ignore this review, since you are atleast honest with all of them, to the best of our knowledge. But yeah, a game like this, in today's environment, no lootboxes, no rng bs, unlockable skins through gameplay, yeah i would have bought it just to vote with my wallet.

And that is the fundamental problem with the industry these days. Big publisher's feel they don't even have to try anymore and people will still buy their lackluster minimum effort games. And they are right. Anthem, call of duty 47 or whatever they are on now, The THIRD modern warfare remake, which btw doesn't even have the coop anymore, they just took it out lol. @@ggmann13 Flying Wild Hogs is not a big publisher, Evil West is not a AAA game. The game is good, not great and it is cheaper than everyone of those games you've mentioned. I could buy 2 or 3 of Evil West to COD's one. I understand Mack's points but they do not bother me, as I do not have the same concerns as he does. I like the combat, I like the setting and the concept. Why is it so hard for people to understand that not everyone feels the same way? If it is not for you, okay, that's fine but don't give me this they never tried crap, it is clearly not true. They tried something different and I hope it pays off for them. @@lorddiethorn Lol. Telling me about a game I've played but you haven't. Amazing. Full price on the console currently varies between £85 - £105 and how much did I pay? £35, Series X. No "tons of issues" for me apart from some minor graphical issues and occasional crashes in the first couple of days. It's not bad, I quite enjoy it and judged it for what it is based on these factors, enjoyment, co-op and price. There is no grind.
Glad to see someone here with an original thought. I don't think every game needs to be some thought provoking, life changing masterpiece. Sometimes dumb simple minded fun is what we need.

I like it personally. It's a fun no nonsense game like we used to get back on 360 and PS3 and not an overblown movie with occasional action like Sony produce. Give me this wild west setting any day of the week. I can see why people don't like it though due to lower production values as people are just so used to sucking on Sony Teet and expecting everything to look like it cost 50 million plus in order for it to be worthwhile.

It's not exactly the pinnacle of difficulty, but the difficulty curve actually came from real things, like mistiming a jump etc, not the trash "fake difficulty" of a lot of today's titles. Which is achieved by giving absolutely dogshit AI and aimbot, and calling it a day
It plays more like a cross between Gears of war and Devil May cry i think it's brilliant fun. So glad i got it despite all the negative Nancie's that just don't seem to like fun games anymore. Just switch targeting to manual mode and it is a ton of fun. Especially using the firearms.

I’ve been playing on steam deck , and while it has some stuttering issues overall im pleased with the game . Is it revolutionary ? Nope , just old school fun!

Lets be honest, this is the type of game that you buy & play when you just want to turn off your brain and feel over-powered.
While that is totally fine for some, its not fine for others who actually want to think while playing games. While I wouldn't be as harsh on this game, I simply acknowledge that its just NOT for me. However, the severe lack of enemy variety is a big turn off.

I remember that Worth A Buy hated "Remnant From the Ashes" also. That game is a gem.
AND he thumbed up God of War 4 years ago which is basically the same combat system. Now, don't get me wrong, in MOST games I share the same opinion as Mack and def share the notion that the gaming industry is in decline (imho since 2010). but I have noticed a few things about Mack:
1. He reviews games and mostly never touches them again, even if they get better, fixed and have new content. Making his reviews not future proof unless he revisits them and "overwrite" his older reviews of games.
2. He hates something in one game and then months later doesn't mention the same thing in another game. Or he likes something in one game and months later hates the same thing in another game. He is not always consistent. With some things he is, like keybinding, console ports and performance (quality and FPS) but not always with actual game mechanics.
3. His reviews are starting to slowly turn to rage reviews.. maybe because he gets more likes with that. He uses gimmicky things like his "songs" to be funny or edgy or something which he used to not care about. I know gaming quality took a real turn for shit town, but it just feels like he went on the "Whining Train" for a reason..
He used to make a video like this: Tell us the game name, then description, then settings, then what he liked about it, then what he disliked about it, then if it was worth a buy and HIS reason for it in detail.. then it ended in a "sticker" at the very end, thumb up or down.. It was IMHO less opinionated and more "facts" compared to his "newer"review style and over time more "hypey" stuff got added. I still watch ALL of his reviews but they are not the same as years ago. He used to be a "must watch" before I would watch game trailers and read/watch other reviews before buying.. that's no longer the case though.

@@Devonaxx That's why I don't really put too much stock into what reviewers say, including independent ones. They play so many games for the purpose of a review to the point they forget criticisms made in other games. Or perhaps one game got a pass because of something else they like. I remember Mack having positive thoughts about Ghost of Tsushima, but the combat in that game was infinitely more boring. You had to use certain stances against certain weapons because... the game said so.
Yeah but stance in real life where good but the thing two games can have the same combat like in a game but one is good at it where it flows well and one does not. I mean god of war is not just the combat it’s also the story and the fact that most enemies you run into on the main area are level like five to maybe seven tops. I mean god of war to get the final trophy will take around 50 to maybe 70 hours depending on how many times you die and if keep going back to your house to talk to characters. But it’s probably only a 25 to 30 hour game in the main story. I mean that will take you about about a week or two depending on how many hours you play.

The typical "ign" type game sites gave this game good reviews. I was going to buy this. Then I thought it would be best to wait for Mack's review. I'm glad I didn't buy this console port.
There's so much effort into the shiny coating, but the core gameplay feels 20 years out of date.
As soon as you started pointing out the flaws I was like "this is a Spiders game" but it's Focus, which is essentially the same thing. Every 👏 game 👏 has 👏 the same 👏 mechanics 👏
it is fun combat which is the main thing and the voice acting is nowhere near as bad as people in reviews are going on about lol. I rather like it. It has a sarcasm to it always.

I had high hopes for this game, after playing this for several hours I have to say this review is pretty spot on. The bugs that I have encountered have been ridiculous, at one point I was stuck half in the floor during a boss battle, then i was stuck on a wall, then a cinematic froze the game and I finally just gave up. I find myself playing on my phone during the cinematic scenes and i usually play games because I love the storylines. I feel this could have been so much better. Well hopefully the Callisto Protocol will be everything I want!

I’m on PS4, I’ve run into very few bugs or glitches. Strange
I gave this a go three times, literally give the benefit of the doubt, uninstalling and reinstalling it 3 times, after so much of the same arena combat crap over and over and over and over, slow upgrade trees, completely uninteresting plot and characters with a lore that was both immensely deep AND boring, walking from prerendered cutscene to prerendered cutscene (that were about 6ft apart IN THE SAME BUILDING!), and not being allowed to backtrack, ever (So if you missed a secret? TOO BAD, restart the entire chapter/entire game!), etc etc, I got about 70% the way through the campaign and ended up selling it.
Everyone screaming about how this was a call-back to the PS3/360 glory days of Devil May Cry and God Of War, what the hell are you lot smoking? 🤣
It's a shame, coz its a very cool premise, wrapped the most boring story and linear arena combat conveyer-belt gameplay I've ever seen in my entire life!

It's 40% cheaper than current AAA titles, playing co-op is enjoyable, the combat is good, where the punches, shots and powers feel weighty and the setting is great.
Sure, the story is uninteresting (at least for me) and the dialogue is total w☥ but despite these flaws, I'm enjoying it.
In a gaming world chock full of tedious FPS games, dozens of sequels, annual releases and greedy corporations bleeding their IPs dry, Evil West feels like a reminder that games are still for fun before MTs ruined the industry forever. Yes the gameplay may feel dated and it isn't revolutionising gaming but it isn't even trying to be something that isn't.
With all this in mind, it's a new IP by a small studio, it's decent enough where I can forgive it for its limitations and I appreciate that it even exists, in the first place and as a result I both like and judge it for what it is, rather than what it is not... e.g. another AAA microtransaction laden sequel with no heart or soul.

I am not sure if you were trollin or what, but I feel sad for people that might miss out this game cause of this wierd rant/review.
I finished it a few hours earlier, and it was super enjoyable, it left a nice feel after completing, its not an innovative masterpiece, and it's not an indie unappreciated gem, it is simply an action game with tight combat, super responsive controls, crisp environment and graphics, and most of all, it's enjoyable.
I have seen you review much more shitty games in a more positive light that what you did here, but we all have bad days, and you might have played this one at a bad time, so i am just gonna ignore this review, since you are atleast honest with all of them, to the best of our knowledge.
But yeah, a game like this, in today's environment, no lootboxes, no rng bs, unlockable skins through gameplay, yeah i would have bought it just to vote with my wallet.

And that is the fundamental problem with the industry these days. Big publisher's feel they don't even have to try anymore and people will still buy their lackluster minimum effort games. And they are right. Anthem, call of duty 47 or whatever they are on now, The THIRD modern warfare remake, which btw doesn't even have the coop anymore, they just took it out lol. Why try to make good games when most gamers settle for "good enough"
@@ggmann13 Flying Wild Hogs is not a big publisher, Evil West is not a AAA game. The game is good, not great and it is cheaper than everyone of those games you've mentioned. I could buy 2 or 3 of Evil West to COD's one.

Not every game needs to be some AAA mass-appeal blockbuster and for every game that isn't, it shouldn't be judged by those same standards.
Red Dead Redemption II was a masterpiece but it was also a massive publisher/developer that also had roots in making good but not great games when they started out.
If we don't support these smaller companies, who will? Then we are left with nothing but greedy corporations charging $100 for games that include disgusting MTs, meanwhile all the other companies fail to grow because everyone seems to have set the bar higher for all games, no matter who made them.
It’s a full price game on console and has a ton of issues there is small company but this looks bad. Look at greedfall that was the work of a company that was smaller budget but made a fairly good game with story and stuff this looks bad and it feels like this game get boring after a hour. I mean I like rpg where you grind for exp and gold but this just looks bad

Full price on the console currently varies between £85 - £105 and how much did I pay? £35, Series X. No "tons of issues" for me apart from some minor graphical issues and occasional crashes in the first couple of days.
It's not bad, I quite enjoy it and judged it for what it is based on these factors, enjoyment, co-op and price.
There is no grind.
UI itself looked bad enough. But all games that use these "glowing areas" to indicate things to find are just a bad joke.

I like it personally. It's a fun no nonsense game like we used to get back on 360 and PS3 and not an overblown movie with occasional action like Sony produce. Give me this wild west setting any day of the week. I can see why people don't like it though due to lower production values as people are just so used to sucking on Sony Teet and expecting everything to look like it cost 50 million plus in order for it to be worthwhile.
