Probably one of my fave bands ever. Harriet was just wonderful, her voice and presence was pure beauty. Never really made a bad track and most were brilliant. Never tire of listening to them, but they were just too good to appeal to the general listener. But now they have a bigger following than ever, due to the poor quality of recent music.

At the time, with the break up of the Smiths still stinging, I embraced The Sundays fervently. They were like ‘The Smiths Lite’ - just jangly enough, just dark enough, and just English enough to lessen the sting. Their music will always be treasured by me mostly because they were part of the soundtrack of my tumultuous early adulthood. (Never underestimate the sentimental power of the music of those years.) Even at the time I thought they sounded more VH1 than MTV, but it was the occasionally beautiful specificity of the lyrics and Harriet’s emotional, yet detached, vocals provided the bridge from The Smiths to Radiohead that apparently I needed in those years.

I think that it is hard to hold against these reviewers that there is a lot to be said for being in the moment. Everything you describe, Jon, is exactly why we pounced on The Sundays. They were like this perfect little smithsy-cocteauy blend before we ever heard the Cranberries, or any of the other 90s bands. It is exactly why most of us loved the Cranberries on their first album, too. I never really transitioned to Radiohead myself, but that's ok, too.

Saw and met The Sundays in Tallahassee, FL in 1992. I was in college at the time, and already a huge fan. I can't listen to their music now without crying - The Sundays mean that much to me, because they were the soundtrack of my life when I was 17-23; really down to earth people as I recall; super polite and engaging. Wish they'd do some new work...

One of my all time favorite albums. Most of the albums that stick with me take me some time to fall in love with. With this album I heard "Here's Where the Story Ends" playing in a record store and immediately asked what it was and bought it on the spot. It was love at first listen. I think Harriet Wheeler's voice is pure magic. For me this is the perfect blend of beauty, melancholy, sparseness, and a touch of dissonance. I've heard these songs hundreds of times and will always love them. That said, their next album Blind is my favorite of their sadly small discography. It's sublime. I never listened to The Smiths but I liked a lot of the Cocteau Twins music. If you don't love it, that's cool. I feel that way about a lot of music other people love. I couldn't say why this album resonates with me the way it does. but it does like very few others.

Being a fan of The Sundays, The Smiths & Cocteau Twins and all together for almost 16 years. I never tried to compare, all are influences to The Sundays, but you insist to do it all over the video.
But I feel The Sundays never pushed their potential, never wanted fame, (basically disappear in 1997 leaving no tracks at all) Harriet was a little bit shy on their gigs (you can see that in my channel), never did live sessions, you can sense that feel of "shyness" in their songs, like if some point the song will explode but it never happen.
But they'are great! Those songs were made to concentrate at work :D

I just now realized you did a Sundays reaction. I love them but I tend to listen to my own “best of” mix I compiled instead of the albums as a whole because I agree many of their songs are kind of tough to grasp onto. I’m surprised that you weren’t more immediately taken with “Here’s Where...” because that’s got one of the most memorable melodies from all of the 90s and is a renowned track. I also especially love “You’re Not the Only One I Know,” “I Kicked a Boy” and “My Finest Hour” from this album. And songs from subsequent albums like “Goodbye,” “Love” and “Summertime” (which was their biggest, maybe only, hit in the US) are melodic bliss, just amazing tracks. I actually find their sound to be incredibly unique.

For many people who love The Sundays, it may be that you had to have heard them when the album came out to get it to work into you best. To be fair, your most harsh comments actually are pretty much spot on. It is a product of its time. It is something like The Smiths, but maybe not so melodramatic. And it did come out at a time in which I remember that female lead singers who helped define the sound of the group were something of a trend. For me, the sound is a bit more timeless, or maybe that it reminds me of a different time in my life when it seemed that there was more promise in the future. Maybe due to the fact that the lyrical content is never political, but it is somewhat intimate? Also, this was a moderately pushed group that was in the shadow of a lot of really bad heavily pushed music. For example, I would give this group a listen before Warrant, Ratt, or even Guns and Roses.

I think the SUNDAYS are extremely underrated. The only reason The Smith's reference is true is the similar sonic landscape, the melodies are more complicated and beautiful imho. If you start with the first album though, they are a band that grows on you.

This was one of my most cherished albums as a freshman in high school. I was angry, oppressed and emotionally struggling. This album, with Harriet's vocals and David's guitar rhythms, really pulled me out of a rut and helped me find therapy in good music and connect with friends who appreciated the same (music was so defining of self in high school, it seemed). This band brought out so much emotion and had a hypnotic effect on me with these melodies. I don't care who they were inspired by. The Sundays were one of my saviors back in the day. ❤

I understand your criticism. And I understand your need to adjust your mind frame. The thing that makes this album so amazing is exactly what isn’t gelling with you. It’s the improvisatory aspect of the songs. It’s as if the band uses rock chords and pentatonic scale as a template for their improvisation. Just as jazz does. However, this album is not jazzy, it’s just improvisatory. It’s amazing what Harriet can do vocally.

When I first heard this album, it may have made a difference that I had never heard of the Smiths. The atmosphere created by the music the (guitar‘s bass, drums) was subdued and complemented the singer‘s voice so well that it created a dream pop state. It was unlike anything I had heard to that point.

Hi Alex, Yep agree this is a Smiths/Cocteau mix but it takes the best bits from both and you have to judge it on it own and it was there first foray into the music industry. Unlike my response to Joy Division I won't go into the background (hint carrying a torch) but the lyrics speak about shyness and isolation (Smiths & JD) Again I have grown past my adolescence but this is one of my go to albums whilst driving (with Stereolab) as I find it uplifting and chilling (no road rage for me :) )

Hi, Alex, that album certainly was very popular as time wore on. When I was in graduate school some of my classmates knew it and listened as middle schoolers. Remember, back in the day when kids who wore punk rock outfits or black boots and alternative haridos listened to something you kinda were pushed in that direction musically. That's what's so generally speaking unfortunately part of what makes dark music popular. I would add that generally the punk rock, Cure, Smiths groups were perceived as punkish or moody. Now I was in college when the album came out. It was in the bookstore, so I said let's give it a try. Trust me your reaction is probably what many of us felt the first time- unsure. We were unsure about it, but it was alternative, so those of us with a desire for artsy things or alternative rock it fit the mold. When I describe alternative, we were desiring different, so this was different.. The later albums all continually piqued my interest and are regarded as among my favorite albums. I would add. Your critiques are professional. As an English major I'd say your critique is by the book. However, to be frank if you go check out reviews by music rags, I dunno, whatever they are, you'd find what people thought about it who were living in that time with more context - I'll do this and repost. Obviously you've said it grows on you and that's precisely it. They were not the best musicians, but gave it a try and their lyrics are good imo. The music is like dressing on the lyrics and their unified presentation suggests a real bond among them. So as far as your critique goes - as a lit major we use literary criticism which is to say we compare a novel to others of that era who were popular, but that approach is rather an introduction to criticism and not really speaking to the taste of people for that novel. The tastes of people in their twenties today is a bit different so you might feel less passionate about it than others which is normal!

Was searching for The Sundays videos and came across this one. So to be exact, Harriet is from Reading. Gavurin, her husband, is from Wembley. They met at the University of Bristol in Bristal England. They married and moved to London and started writing songs and formed The Sundays, in London. So their official bio says they formed in London in 1988. You can say the record title is a pun but proudly not. You miss the point of why this was immediately embraced by college radio. It was so brit pop before that was a marketable thing. Lyrics and music are levels above most now and at the time. Not many singers before and since can match Harriet's vocals. I'm glad they don't appeal to a large audience. Btw The Smith broke up a few years before this record came out. I don't hear much of an influence and I love The Smiths.

When this album first came out, I liked a couple cuts but was kind of meh on the whole album. But over time it evolved into one of my all time favorites. I love every song now, a rarity. There is a thinness to the mix I don't care for but that is overwhelmed by my admiration for her voice, melodies, and the somewhat sparse yet beautifully thought out way the guitar arrangements kind of bracket and create a conversation with what the vocals are doing. Now as an old man I sit with my own guitar and try to see if I can unravel and duplicate exactly what these guitar parts are. In a sense they are minimalistic and we hear single plucked strings where others bands would build the arrangement into something more dense. But there is something very clever and compelling about this arrangement minimalism. Like "I can accomplish as much as I need to accomplish complementing the vocals with these carefully chosen, sparse guitar notes, so why do more?"

I'm not surprised you ain't clicking with it ; you weren't born in the UK in the same era as this band i'm not surprised you don't get it. You are an American man born 20 years later growing up in a different musical landscape. I hate Justin Bieber.

yep , thinking the exact same thing. The lyrics and the mood are of that time .It's the joy on melancholy it probably is intangible... its perfect🥰💞Just thinking if someone has never been on the tube could they understand the feeling.

Emma Wheeler is an infinitely more interesting person than Morrissey.

I completely disagree. Her vocals are also more forced than Morrissey's. I do think that if she made music these days it would be much better than Morrissey's, although that isn't saying much. Morrissey's music has become progressively worse to the point where he is almost making a mockery of himself. I would be inclined to agree with you if you switched out Harriet Wheeler with Hope Sandoval.

This strikes me as an album with 2 or 3 great songs and the rest of us is just mildly pleasant but not super memorable. It doesn’t exactly do anything wrong, it’s just that it doesn’t go above and beyond when it comes to the songwriting or the sound.

Yeah, the singles are great and emotive but I'm not keen on most of it, then again I'm not keen on the Cocteau Twins either.

I'm with you, nothing earth shattering. I used to listen to it a lot. Doesn't touch The Smiths or Twins. Agree, it's nothing special sadly. Bit of The Cranberries in there too.

Sadly you will never like this album as much as I did back in the day just because you overthink the songs too much with that much criticism and this kills the joy of it . . . these song will probably never get to grow next to your heart ! 😢 SORRY FOR THAT !

Like you I feel like the music is too derivative, and the melodies/singing isn’t interesting enough to set it apart from its influences. It’s pleasant though.

Pretty much my feelings exactly. I enjoy about half of the album, really like 2-3 of the songs, and the rest are eh.

Like Larkin’s poetry it’s quintessentially ‘English’- and I think it improves on careful listening. It’s subtle.
