    I think what makes this album so damn good is that despite it being very glitchy and experimental, it manages to be very hooky and accessible at the same time. Like Dsco and Chocolate Matter are straight up pop songs. You need to check out their follow up-album You Will Never Know Why at some point. It's much more indie pop and less glitchy but still a very strong album regardless.

    In response to your comment about the music “having heart” at 18:23, I think the word which best describes this album for me is sincerity. I don’t know how or why, but there’s a sort of honesty and earnestness and genuineness to this group, and especially this album in particular. It’s one of the reasons I love this group as much as I do, because this album, along with You Will Never Know Why, is full of that same feeling. Despite their uniqueness and creativity, there's a sense of honest humility to their sound and lyrics. VDC just doesn’t sound like anything else I’ve ever heard, and it still blows my mind that anything from 2003 could possibly sound like this. Thanks for giving it a fair and balanced review!

    10:35 the word your looking for is ambitious. That's why I like this album. It works on a chill out level as well as having faster moments (the "breakdown baby" then blasting you with blissful shoegaze noise is awesome). Has emotion too amongst the insane trippy IDM bits

  • @tinypeas
    @tinypeas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Every perspective you gave on this video is pretty spot on, especially the mention of it being a starting point for getting into IDM. I had my youngest sibling get into IDM after I recommended VDC to him. Excellent video man.

    I really fell in love with Björk during my post rock/progressive phase. I kinda shrugged her off as a pop singer. But that's a grave mistake. She's so progressive, she makes Dream Theater sound like AC/DC (cuz they always play the same music all the time).

    pink floyd's the wall sounded like garbage to me until about 2014. it suddenly sounded completely contemporary and i was taken aback by how forward thinking some of the stuff they were doing was. i alway's saw it as kinda silly too, like 80s dad rock. but it's actually a really venerable and personal album about childhood trauma, fear of intimacy, and closing yourself off from feeling.

It made me realize some interesting things about this unique album, it breaks the rules, there's some heart and sweetness in there that you couldn't belive judging by their musical genre and even maybe the cover, idk. I think that Shoegaze/Dream pop has a considerable influence here btw :)

    • @AlexHaitz
      @AlexHaitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Not everything sounds like a product of its time.
      And I was not expecting this album to sound like its indie contemporaries given the genres attributed to the band/album.

  • @jelly3374
    @jelly3374 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not a big fan of the album, they all sound really half-baked examples of either Shoegaze or IDM, doing neither style particularly well or mixing them in any meaningful way, which makes it sound disjointed. Yeah and it's bloated as all hell. While this was, as far as I remember, the first time I listened to an album like this, it really didn't stick with me positively over the years.

    • @AlexHaitz
      @AlexHaitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I can understand. I don’t get a wholly cohesive sense of concept or personality, at least not enough to push it over the edge and make it a favorite for me. The shoegaze and IDM just clash a bit too much for it to feel seamless (although who knows, that may change for me on future listens). Still enjoy it quite a bit though, and it’ll certainly make appearances in my background listening rotation.
