The city lights are beckoning The sirens softly call Of the fantasist and fetishists are preparing the ball When you've been stuck here on the doorstep with nothing to forsake Well you might as well be anyone's to take So I give myself to strangers like i gave myself to you But the tenderness are felt has been replaced by something new And in the orgy I can vaguely hear the outline of your call Well I might as well be anyone's at all Every memory is sailing to the kingdom of your soul As you patiently await and lose all sense of self control You were the lighthouse to my broken boat But I've left you behind Now I might as well be anyone's to find Take my body take it from me It is not worthy of your memory Take my body take it from me It is not worthy of your memory I remember you undressing as I set myself on fire And the funeral was quick as I lay lifeless on your pyre Well it's a kind of desperation And it's just something you can't fake Oh I might as well be anyone's to take So I give myself to strangers like I gave myself to you But the unity I felt has been replaced by something new Now I am Helen and I am Mary Jane I am Robert and I am Paul Oh I might as well be anyone at all Yes I might as well be anyone at all Oh I might as well be anyone at all Oh I might as well be anyone at all Anyone at all Anyone at all Anyone at all
Idk if this will be appreciated and idk if it's anything that was being thought about but Biblically, and, foundationally, this song encapsulates the meaning of obeying God. See, when you dismiss the virtue of staying pure or doing the right thing you basically create a world to live in where what's real and true means nothing. "I might as well be anyone at all." That's absolutely where it goes when you ignore what's true. That's what the serpent meant to instill, "You won't surely die.", or, in other words, "Nothing matters." But it all does matter. That's why you can't get away with treating yourself or someone else without dignity or holiness. That's why sin leads to death. When you miss the mark, when you fail to give value to what matters, you strip away at your own soul and the soul of things. That's where the guilt comes from, where the conviction comes from. This song does a great job of showing something so precious being used the wrong way and leading to the conclusion that, well, that you don't matter. But that's a lie: "When you eat of it, you will surely die." Everything you do matters; there is consequences. There is pain. There is wrong.
Literally my favorite villager song, but pretty much all of Villagers songs are near perfections
You are my lighthouse to my broken ship. I've been there a few times .thanks for reminding me.
absolute magic. and I only discovered this on Spotify. gosh
Finding something with this quality lyricism it's pretty hard these days plus all the melody and vocals that work perfectly... Thank you.
My thoughts exactly -it reads like a poem.
I've just discovered this jewel… I can't stop crying, it is so beautiful it hurts...

One of my favourites 💗
beautiful
The city lights are beckoning
The sirens softly call
Of the fantasist and fetishists are preparing the ball
When you've been stuck here on the doorstep with nothing to forsake
Well you might as well be anyone's to take
So I give myself to strangers like i gave myself to you
But the tenderness are felt has been replaced by something new
And in the orgy I can vaguely hear the outline of your call
Well I might as well be anyone's at all
Every memory is sailing to the kingdom of your soul
As you patiently await and lose all sense of self control
You were the lighthouse to my broken boat
But I've left you behind
Now I might as well be anyone's to find
Take my body take it from me
It is not worthy of your memory
Take my body take it from me
It is not worthy of your memory
I remember you undressing as I set myself on fire
And the funeral was quick as I lay lifeless on your pyre
Well it's a kind of desperation
And it's just something you can't fake
Oh I might as well be anyone's to take
So I give myself to strangers like I gave myself to you
But the unity I felt has been replaced by something new
Now I am Helen and I am Mary Jane
I am Robert and I am Paul
Oh I might as well be anyone at all
Yes I might as well be anyone at all
Oh I might as well be anyone at all
Oh I might as well be anyone at all
Anyone at all
Anyone at all
Anyone at all
