The PS Vita was the most underrated, overdeveloped, and underestimated handheld device of its day. Honestly, these days, people buy these to mod, and my god, it's amazing. Plus, there is a community server with all the games from every region, so you can download games directly to the console. I bought the Vita 2000 a few weeks ago, and I love it.
i absolutely loved the PSP, but what actually shunned me the most with the Vita was the expensive memory cards back then and lack of third party support and exclusives. I never really saw a game that made me feel “i must play this” on the Vita that i couldn’t play elsewhere. Felt like Sony almost dropped it as fast as they dropped PSVR2

Yeah. Give it a snapdragon cpu, and use microSD instead of proprietary BS like they did, and a modern Vita would sell very well. Imagine all those old Vita games playing on modern graphic processing. You would no longer be hard locked to subpar 30FPS
Sony abandoned the Vita too quickly once the PS4 started selling really well. I think the Vita would have succeeded had Sony given it more support. I've had my Vita since like a year after release, and it still holds up to this day. I still occasionally use it.
I believe that the psp was ahead of it's time. If they came out with a new version of the psp with dedicated games/ps5 mobile compatibility it would sell like hot cakes

Yes the PS Vita was a failure. The competition which was the 3ds outsold it by 60 million units and it also made Sony leave the handheld market and focus only on the home console market.
The fact memory cards were so much more expensive for vitas compared to the 3DS was actually a major reason why I bought a 3DS as a kid since it was so much cheaper. The lack of new games coming out was another one as well for me.

It kinda started with the Atari Lynx in 1989. A semi-16 bit console with a color screen and sampled sound, with a crazy rom capacity for its time. What made it fail was its hefty price, plus the fact that you had to juice it up with expensive batteries after just 1.5 hours of gameplay while its much less complex Nintendo Gameboy easily could stretch you 25 hours of gameplay, albeit on a black yellow screen with crazy amounts of lag. The moral of the story is - it's not always about being technically superior, but the overall experience.
Saw one comment saying "The PSvita got the most personality out of the entire Sony Console generations" and i just couldn't agree more. The Vita deserves better and It's only alive because of the community scene and Sony dumped it and it only failed because of their stupid practices.
I love the Vita. The memory cards were definitely the biggest problem with the system with Sony’s lack of 1st party support being the second. I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned that the Vita basically saw the rise of limited print game companies. Limited Run Games’ very first game was a Vita game after all, and while the business model at the time sucked (basically just fear of missing out stressfests) it helped build the Vita community, which is one of the best gaming communities I’ve ever had the pleasure to be a part of. Everyone is welcome on Vita Island. The Vita didn’t get a ton of games in the end but what’s there is great. The Vita will always remain one of my favorite gaming systems of all time and maybe not being super successful is part of that.
Fun Fact: Those "SD2Vita cards don't actually adapt AD card to the Memory Card slot. You need to homebrew enable your Vita and it lets you use your Game Slot as a memory slot using that adapter...
Sony's constant PSP updates to make emulation impossible, put a bad taste in my mouth. I was not interested in the Vita at all, staying inside and played Xbox and PC.
The weird pricing, multiple models and expensive proprietary memory cards are what stopped me from buying one. I should be able to save my game on ANY system I buy, portable or otherwise

I'm happy you did this video. :) Love my Vita... actually recently gave in and soft-modded mine, mostly to be able to use the SD card adapters now available, and letting me play through the translated Japanese Trails in the Sky (Evolution) series - it was awesome. The only reason why Vita failed was the stupid memory cards and weak first party and third party support. Sony should have pushed developers to make software for it but they themselves gave up to quickly like they recently did with PS VR2
An advantage of the PSTV (which I got one of) and the Vita generally, is it had backwards compatability with PSP (which had an amazing library in of itself). Which means the games that lived on the small portable screen could be played on a HDTV...
I have an original OLED and a Japanese slim; part of what's great is how modular they are. I recently replaced the battery in one and the analog in the other; easiest game-related repairs I've every done. Nice to have quality games while I do laundry or charge my car.
The Vita was awesome hardware wise but Nintendo proved that hardware is useless when you don't have the software to back it up. Nintendo had amazing games with inferior hardware and outsold the Vita substantially
I kinda just hoped they'd let go of the OS limitations of the Portal and opened up the Android OS under it. They'd literally do everyone a solid by approaching it like the Xperia Play and making their own Portal exclusives.

To this day! Sony will forever remain a failure for not supporting the BEST handheld ever. They put money into a few games and then gave up... no ads though? like, ever. There was just 0 support beyond release and pre-release was poor. To this day, they make excuses. But recent talks suggest after the failure of ps portal, that they may be looking into making up for their mistakes.

I had a PSP 1001 and it was awesome. I got my hands on a ps vita recently from my colleague and the ps store doesn't work anymore so I can't get demos on-line. I have to buy the games now
i loved the psp and ps vita. i always wanted my handheld to be proper gaming on the go rather than a different stripped back experience nintendo offered. its why i love my steamdeck right now. i'll always look back on them favourably even if sony probably dont

Never had a portable gaming device until steam deck, and that chonker made me look at things like switch and even vita, i'd definitely get one now but i don't think i could play any games on them anymore because i got spoiled by good PC graphics, and i do have a decent PC to play on these days. Really do hope that Sony can give us a new handheld, that'd be great.
Portable PS4 would certainly be a huge seller, especially if they intorduced a PSV emulator with the system. Besides, most of the games are still coming to PS4. We deserve a PS4P. Heck, I would also take a retro-centric PS3P console with PS1-PS3, PSP and PSV games. Sony already has the software and means of selling them anyway, so they could only gain from this.
The only purpose today to own a ps vita is to mod it and install adrenaline so you can take advantage of the right analog stick when playing PSP games. Secondly a large majority of its library has been ported to ps4 and other platforms. I own a PSP but I only own it because there super easy to mod also if your own 2 or 3 model you can connect it to a television through component cables. There also a plugin mod were you can display your psp screen on your computer through the usb port and play a game.
Vita simply came out at the wrong time. Already having a tough competitor in the 3ds, and the rise of smartphone, also the STUPID PROPRIETARY MEMORY CARDS, made it doomed from the start. I think it would do much better these days where the hype for phones has sizzled out and while the switch is still very popular, there is room for competitors. Just look at the steam deck and other pc handhelds with some literally cost a ps5 pro and a half. There is also interest for a ps handheld with how well the remote play ONLY portal sold. Cmon sony. Lets do a proper handheld again lol
I found the game play experience didnt quite transfer over to the psp or vita. The controls were just too different. Ive never been into cartoon type games so i only played games that were more based in reality.

I remember playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) on my PS Vita and it looked pretty comparable to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game

wish they had those adapters sooner. I remember spending bday/xmas money all on the 32gb memory card and barely had enough to get one game.

The slim model didnt lose much, the lcd is still pretty amazing. I own one and its no where as bad as people claim.

ATT Wireless screwed up a promo and I got the 3g Vita for around 100 bucks right after launch. Never used it.

I was a big fan of the original PSP, but I never bothered with the Vita.
I have my PS Vita with a CFW and emulators in it. I take it with me to my business trips and vacations. It's still a very capable device.
