I watched a long video about Vaudeville the other day. It was stated that only a few of the galaxy of performers made the transition to film.

I met Stan. Called him on the phone one day, told him I'd been a fan all my life - 18 years - and would love to visit. "Sure," he said. "How about Saturday morning
?" I visited him 3 times and then we corresponded.

Thank you! There were several photos of the great comedians which I had never seen before.

Oliver Hardy had ambitions to be a singer and was indeed in Vaudeville and the Minstrels before going into film. He got his start as a cinema heavy, Buster Keaton gave him his break.

I must disagree that Stan Laurel was not a silent screen star 13:11. After he and Oliver Hardy teamed up at Hal Roach studio in 1927, they made a couple of dozen classic silent shorts, including "Sailors, Beware!", "Putting Pants on Philip" (Stan's favorite L&H film), the insane "Battle of the Century" and "Big Business". Their first talkie, "Unaccustomed As We Are" came well into 1929.

The narrator sounds like he's delivering a eulogy.

It would be a good documentary except for the narrator. I had to quit watching and move on elsewhere.

The Marx Bros were big vaudeville players. Their uncle was the important Al Shean.

Heel interessant als filmliefhebber, waar is het concept film ontstaan? Boeiend. Oh de jaren 80 brachten zoveel goede films, mag toch hé Marieke?

"1C" means one cent, NOT one DIME. Vaudeville admission was one cent !

      Maybe they adjusted for inflation?

At least he called it a “dime.”

Thanks for the note - The slide on the screen should have said 1 dime - this is the reference I have found when researching this. But duly noted and I have added this to the corrections page on the website - thanks. www.motionforgepictures.com/feedback/

"Karno-ism had had a huge influence in comedy in the twentieth AND TWENTY-FIRST centuries..." ????? Did you, perhaps mean the NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH centuries ?

Mae West was never in Vaudeville. She was in Burlesque.

I believe she did make appearances in some Vaudeville shows - It's also stated in Britannica encyclopedia - www.britannica.com/biography/Mae-West

i've heard a biography on her which said she was in many vaudeville performances and had many stage managers and collaborators of whom she would direct and write her own contracts

She intermingled with plenty of Vaudeville as well as stage shows with some of their performers. I can speak to this directly since my great grandfather "Stan Stanley" (Stan Childrey) was in Pleasure Man which was one of their shows that got raided by the NYC PD in 1928. You can even search "Stan Stanley Mae West" and you'll see the photos of the main 4 in the courtroom with several others. To her credit she also tried getting a lot of Vaudevillians to move to Hollywood as she already knew what was coming.
