For the orange cardigan: circular needles are a novelty for me, also the top to down technique, so I've knitted with straight needles all my life and worked with patterns made in separate pieces. But I have seen also (specially for babies/kids) a way to do the top part where you make all the separate pieces flat leaving the stitches in suspense, then you put everything in one needle in order (like one front, one arm, the back, the other arm and the other front) and continue knitting flat all the pieces together shaping the shoulders and neck. So that is my guess for how the orange cardigan was made

Oh the 80’s sweater! So reminds me of a sweater she made me. It was very very pink with puffed sleeves. I still own it but it’s too small. I think we need more puffed sleeves in our lives! That knitting set is really a great find! Well everything is actually!
Finding a fully intact vintage interchangeable needle set is quite a find! All of the sweaters are very lovely, and the raglan sweater wheel sounds really interesting, I've never heard of that tool before.
That last sweater seems much to fitted for the 80s as an teen in the 80s everything was big, I knitted stuff on odd pins with drop stitches, or bat wing 😊 . It is a lovely shape and suits you really well.
I have an interchangeable knitting needle kit from the 70's almost identical to yours with the same stiffness problem. I put the cable I needed under my heating pad until it was pliable and worked with it. The bends still aren't completely gone, but they are no problem to work with. I was afraid to put them into hot water as I didn't know if the coating on the wire would Crack, so the heating pad made sense to me.
I love the light blue cardigan! And that orange is very bold, wow. I would be forever grateful if you did a video on how you resize patterns to fit you - you usually mention that the suggested bust is off by a bit in vintage patterns. I am always shocked how small your pieces seem when you're working on them, but once on, they fit you perfectly! I need this knowledge because I struggle with adjusting patter sizes to fit me 😬
I had that interchangeable needle set! My friend found it at a garage sale and gave it to me. Mine had a blue and green floral cover and it was from the Sears Roebuck Co. I used it for a long time and loved that the different needle sizes were different color and that the range in size was large. However I found the joins to catch and the cables to be too stiff. I eventually gave it away. It was cool to see it again in your video 😀

I have long coveted a pattern for that gray stripy dotty cardigan, then I saw the blue collared cable fuzzy cardi and began coveting that as well, and now I've seen the glorious orange one with the neat sleeve construction and a pointy-back collar, I want that as well, please. We have great op shops (thrift stores) in Australia but I've never seen so many fab vintage jumpers before! 💚💚💚 Envy 💚💚💚

Last night I was going through Etsy looking for a handmade bag/case for my fixed circular needles and saw a similar interchanged needle set. It was incomplete but now I know when it’s from. I thought it was cool. Thanks for the additional information.
What a find in that interchangables kit, I would be careful soaking it in water, there will be some sort of adhesive holding the ends in and it may fail with the water, it may also fail with heat unfortunately so something to submerge just the wires in the warm water and not the ends might be an idea. Looking forward to the pattern for the sweater you were wearing, would love to knit it, test or otherwise
If the cardigan you are wearing is made with slipped stiches making the honeycomb or mosaic effect I owned this pattern until my house was flooded in 2020. I'm sure it was a 1980's or 1990's pattern with vintage vibes.

My grandma made sweaters for all her kids. I have two of the sweaters. Odd collar, looks folded over. Super fluffy. 1970's for sure because that's when they grew up.
The orange is definitely my favourite design-wise. I can understand knitting a raglan cardigan flat in pieces but then joining those pieces to work the yoke together. That way you can seam from the hem to the cuff (or vice versa) on each side and you’re all done apart from the collar. I personally get really frustrated that my stockinette gauge in the round is noticeably tighter than when I’m knitting flat, and I don’t mind purling, so when knitting “seamless” raglan cardigans top-down, I have in the past added some selvedge stitches to the sleeves at the underarm and knit them flat. The inconvenience of seaming them up at the end is less than the inconvenience of messing around with needle sizes to maintain my existing gauge. 😅
Your black-grey-white cardigan looks to me a lot like a Stephen West Bubble cardigan, though not having made it, I’m not sure. Maybe he was inspired by a vintage pattern. I just *love* the shape of that orange cardigan!!! When you figure out how to make it, I’d love to try it for myself! You must have a great Goodwill store. As for storage, my mother had (too) many sweaters, some of which she piled up on shelves, some went into her cedar chest, and others were stored in zipped bags. A couple of her zipped bags were similar to the hanging sort that are used for coats etc., but inside they had relatively soft shelves, so that one could store sweaters folded in small piles (usually 3 or 4). Those were great for keeping them clean & away from moths, plus they could be hung in closets, where she had space.

I’ve poured hot water over vintage circular needles to get out the decades old kinks and it works just fine! May not be exactly the same for yours, but it’s probably worth a try to make them usable 😊

Have you thought about trying to dye it with weak red dye to make it more pumkiny? Hard to tell what it's knit from through the screen though...

I LOVE 80s sweaters, and when you mentioned making a pattern for the one you're wearing, my first thought (even though I've never been able to follow a pattern, nor have ever knit anything with shaping) was that I could totally make it look 80s. And then you got to the actual 80s one! While it's not the 80s sweater style I love most, I also am constantly amused by the way they so consistently took earlier styles and still somehow made them look so 80s. It's just such a distinct era and I love it for that! I'm a little jealous of your goodwill. No matter what I'm looking for, I never seem to live in places where people are giving good stuff. But I did get a daisy knitter from ebay not too long ago, as well as a couple other yarn gadgets, and I'm eagerly anticipating finding the time to try them out! Can't wait to see what you do with yours!

If it makes you feel any better, most of ours are pretty meh too. Finds like the ones in this video are rare and worth bragging about, and honestly require pretty significant dedication to thrift shopping as a hobby. Most of what is in most thrift stores is less “one man’s trash, another man’s treasure,” and more “there is definitely a reason why someone got rid of this.”

I have become a big fan of crazy 1980s sweaters, the the more colourful, the better, but I haven´t dared to buy a lot of these yet, and also I can never find these for 6 bucks or so, I always go to Vinted or other second hand sites, but people know what they have and so they are much more costly. I only wish I could knit more than just rectangles 😂. I have no idea about cables or different shapes like you need for a sweater, I really can only do rectangular shapes as in a scarf or so. And I have no idea how to read knitting patterns. It is such a shame, because otherwise I would knit crazy sweaters from old patterns for myself. But there is no one who can teach me.
Being knit flat and seamed up doesn't imply that it was knit before the 70s? People still knit sweaters flat and seam them, right now. I'm very confused by your method of dating these sweaters.

if you are trying to free up you knitting needle tools and they are metal Kerosene is wonderful I use it all the time on my vintage sewing machines.💞

Love this episode and all those marvellous sweaters! I´d be very interested in knitting the dotted cardigan according to a pattern provided by you. So count me in ;-). Already thought of getting back to you with a question concerning the episode "Can I knit a vintage sweater in one day?". I don´t think I could get hold of the vintage yarn you used for that project here in Germany. So, do you by any chance remember how many meters and grams there are in a skein? My knitwear is maximum 3 years old and they look extremely worn out (even if I haven't worn them so often) 😢
What sort of yarns are you using as I have knitwear that's 20 years old and worn a lot that still looks fabulous.
probably down to the material! Some yarns get worn out super quick
I have become a big fan of crazy 1980s sweaters, the the more colourful, the better, but I haven´t dared to buy a lot of these yet, and also I can never find these for 6 bucks or so, I always go to Vinted or other second hand sites, but people know what they have and so they are much more costly.
I only wish I could knit more than just rectangles 😂. I have no idea about cables or different shapes like you need for a sweater, I really can only do rectangular shapes as in a scarf or so. And I have no idea how to read knitting patterns. It is such a shame, because otherwise I would knit crazy sweaters from old patterns for myself. But there is no one who can teach me.
Being knit flat and seamed up doesn't imply that it was knit before the 70s? People still knit sweaters flat and seam them, right now. I'm very confused by your method of dating these sweaters.
