  • I've got another vintage treasure - A 1960s Sweater and Skirt kit that are made for a PERFECT match! I had so much fun making this matching set with a lot of knitting, a bit of sewing and a hint of crochet :)

    Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

    Would you make (and wear?) a skirt and sweater matching set like this? I've always wanted to match the yarn of a sweater to a skirt/pants exactly and this was my perfect chance!

      I agree 100%! I wanted to add that early in the pandemic, my Aussie Rain would do something similar anytime I was on a video call and started talking, even if it was just to introduce myself. Her method of making noise though, was to vocalize with me-from loud whining to a full on bark! Depending on the situation, I had to excuse myself, remute, or sometimes take her next door to hang out with my family. She has matured quite a bit since 2020-she's 12 years old now. This year I've been able to have her on calls again, but during a recent online book group, she tried her old trick again for a couple of minutes! :)

    Hi, I suspect at least one of your kits (labelled with Pringle) was produced in my home town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Hawick was the home of luxury knitwear in the 50s and 60s and it was the major industry for almost all of my life. Sadly, like many other industries it was priced out of the market by imported knitwear, however we still produce fine garments in some of the small independent mills that survived. I was delighted to see how reverential you were towards the yarn and the fabric-that would have been a very expensive item in its day! What a beautiful outcome, you did it proud (even if I did have a giggle at your confusion over the 5 parts and the raglan sleeves of your cardigan since I'm old!) If you plan to make another of the kits you could search for Pringle of Scotland-they did catalogues of their fashion items and these can still be found online I think. If you're interested, here's a bit more about Hawick. www.madeinhawick.com/history-heritage/

    As a teen in the 60 I can say that your ensemble looks divine. One thing I would add, all my skirts and pants were lined. It was wonderful. Outfits didn’t stretch out and hung beautifully. Didn’t have to worry about wearing a slip. There was a quality in clothing then that can’t be found today.

    • @annapruitt5546
      @annapruitt5546 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve just started sewing my first pair of pants and was debating if it’s worth it to make a lining, especially because I want it to be thin enough for summer. But I definitely prefer the way clothes with linings feel on the body. Your comment has convinced me that linings are worth it- it’s much higher quality!

    I'm in awe of how you knit so much in the round. I was taught to knit in the late 60s by my mum and have only ever known to knit in panels and sew together. What a gorgeous concept it is to have the fabric and yarn together. Wouldn't it be wonderful, though probably very expensive, to have such a thing today!

    Very chic! So well styled!
    For the raglan decreases, the traditional way is to do the cast off on the first two rows, establishing the straight bit at the bottom of the armhole. Then start the raglan decreases, which is exactly how you worked it out. I suppose it's a matter of 'do each instructions as written, unless the instructions say "AT THE SAME TIME"'. I've been knitting almost since those patterns were written.
    Thank you for sharing, what a lot of work.

  • @sonipitts
    @sonipitts ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Re: cardigan cuffs - a few rows of a light-colored elastic thread can be run around the inside of the sweater cuff ribbing (just run them through the purl wales with a tapestry needle) and cut to desired length to add a bit of "hold" to the sleeves without changing any visible sign from the outside. You just have to remember not to press those areas with a hot iron after.

    Also, for what it’s worth, I like hearing Nutella in the background. I love dogs and it makes me happy to know she’s doing something fun!

Your knitting journaling, and the stickers you make has really inspired me to record my projects by the way! Such a fun way to keep track of what you're making.
    Ps. Nutella can make all the noise she wants, she is such a good pupper and probably just wants to keep you company! Doggy noises in the background are honestly so comforting for many of us. I don't have furry friends at the moment because of my tiny living situation, but I grew up with all the nail clicking, collar jingling lovely sounds, and they are just a part of life!

    I also watch Retro Claude and Closet Historian. They have both given me the desire to start sewing again and I also love 1940's vintage knitting. I'm in the process of knitting a 1940's jumper. Can't wait to get it done. Your 60's outfit is fantastic. If you want to tighten up the sleeve cuffs just hand sew a bit of the round elastic by hand from the underside and that should do the trick and it can be easily removed if you choose.

I suspect it's her somewhat esoteric interest. That's not an insult. I studied early music and lute in college. I have always been drawn to the Medieval and Renaissance periods. I really wished I could have traveled from Renaissance fair to fair and perform works by Dowland, Campion, De Milano and others.

    Did you think of reversing the pattern and knitting it all in one piece from the top down? To keep the sides from curling, add one extra stitch on each end when you cast on. Then only knit or purl the extra stitch at the end of each row. Always pass the first stitch at the beginning of each row (without knitting or purling it). This makes a smoother finish to the side edges.

These are needed credentials to be a master or skilled knitter. I am just an overachiever and like to challenge myself with ridiculous things. Anyway...after listening to you read the pattern and rewinding and listening several times I do believe that you meant to do the decrease in the raglan pattern. With that said I also don't think it makes a difference regardless of which way you do it since it is only two additional rows. I just wanted to share my two cents and that is all what I had to say wax worth. Keep up the great videos. I also and jelly that you have a sock knitting machine. I have wanted one for years.

    I have a few of my late mother’s knitting patterns, as well as magazines from the late 50’s, early 60s a there are a few suits (skirt and jacket) in them. Amazing knitwear! BTW, I saw a short film on TH-cam called The Last Knit and it made me think of your episode on questionable knitting scenes.

    My grandma gave me about 150 Talon and Coats vintage zippers from the 50s/60s. So many colors and lengths except black. I think they are better quality then the modern zippers. Sometimes I buy fabric just to match those zippers.

    Would it be possible to tell us a little about the mint/turquoise cardigan you are wearing (approx. 5:30 to 7:00) ? I am particularly impressed and intrigued by the construction of the large cabled collar .
