"good for artists" Yeah the mainstream ones. The small ones that actually struggle have their art stolen by nft people and sold. Also DEAD artists get their art stolen and put as an nft. Qing Han was an artist who died not so long time ago from cancer had her art STOLEN and her brother is now trying to deal with it.

This seems like a scary new thing, but it's actually an issue as old as the internet and digital art creation itself. You don't give people the full res of an artwork unless you explicitly want it to be public domain. And what's more, if the source is made by a vector-based editing program like Clip Studio Paint, you can pretty much ignore that practice entirely since you can upscale the image as much as you want.

Like cryptocurrencies, NFTs have the benefit that the verification of that ownership is not reliant on a single authority.

I think it's quite silly to write off the entire concept of NFTs simply because copyright infringement is taking place, it would be like saying that prints, merch sales, tshirt sales, the entire internet are all awful concepts that should never become a standard, because people are stealing artwork.
Any open marketplace for art will involve copyright infringement, the upside to copyright infringement with NFTs is that stolen art has no value, there is no physical object that you get out of the transaction so you've just handed money over to a scammer for literally nothing, it would be like getting a random person on the street to write up a certificate saying you own the Mona Lisa, you've bought a worthless piece of paper, an ownership certificate written up by the actual owner of the Mona Lisa on the other hand would genuinely be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, even if the conditions of this certificate require the artwork to stay on public display (as is the nature of NFTs)
People this early in the NFT market are probably 90-99% people just looking to sell it later for profit, so people who bought "counterfeit" NFTs will eventually be burned. If NFTs take off as a recognized method of digital ownership, people will easily be able to confirm if an NFT is fake thanks to the nature of the open ledger, no matter how obfuscated scammers may be, the jig is up as soon as you are able to confirm which contracts are legitimate from the original artist, making anyone interested in actually owning an NFT not want to purchase your fake, and if NFTs don't take off and eventually fizzle out and die, then it's worthless anyway, yes it's quite annoying that people are stealing eth from people with this method, but the nature of NFTs mean the artist hasn't really lost out since fake NFTs do not take value away from a legitimate NFT, the only real NFTs in circulation are those made by the actual owner of the work (again, ownership certificates) unlike fake prints, fake tshirts etc which do take value away from any legitimate prints by providing a (usually) cheaper way to obtain a physical good.
@FranklyDoodle Not entirely true, every transaction on a Proof Of Work blockchain has a tangible environmental footprint, when you buy or sell an NFT your transaction is verified by miners, the weight of their verification is based on how much power they've been chugging through on their hardware, obviously each individual transaction has a tiny, miniscule impact but the entire NFT market would make up a sizeable amount of energy, and if it gets more popular that will only increase.
However, the reality is that ~75% of crypto mining is done on renewables already, making it better than centralized financial institutions, since independent mining is automatically incentivized to go renewable for reducing costs, and there are new protocols like Proof Of Stake and Chia's Proof Of Space that are likely to end up as de-facto options in the future that have a miniscule fraction of the power consumption, I fully expect Eth to eventually transition to one of these low-power protocols as they make far more sense, there is no need to have a power-hungry protocol, I would bet my money that BTC will be the only popular crypto to stay on proof-of-work in the next 10 years or so.

    • @PsyDin_
      @PsyDin_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've made this same point on a few other comments, but it's worth recognizing NFTs for what they are: certificates of ownership, there is no NFT that gives you exclusive access to something tangible, afaik every single NFT is attached to an image/song/whatever that is easily accessed, copied, and distributed digitally anywhere anytime.
When someone is stealing art to make an NFT, they are more or less writing up a worthless ownership certificate, it's not like selling counterfeit prints or using stolen art to make tshirts, a fake certificate of ownership doesn't undermine the value of a real certificate of ownership, the only certificate that has genuine value is the certificate written and authorized by the legal owner.
Artists shouldn't feel obligated to track and stamp out fake NFTs, the person buying the NFT should have had the sense to verify the legitimacy of the certificate they purchased, if they are concerned that their art work is being "stolen" then they should, again, remember that the NFT is just a certificate, what is happening is that their art is being used as a medium to scam someone else out of their money, they aren't taking money or potential profit away from the artist, they're like a hooded masked man selling Mona Lisa ownership certificates in an alleyway, the actual owner of the Mona Lisa shouldn't be worried about the masked man "stealing" the Mona Lisa, because he hasn't, he's scammed some idiots out of their money, he hasn't taken value out of selling printed copies of the Mona Lisa, and he hasn't taken value out of the potential eventual resale of the genuine ownership of the Mona Lisa.

What I'm confused about is why do we need the concept of nfts to support artists. Most of them already do commissions and you can pay and ask for a personalized artwork that is MEANT for you, and the sad thing is nft makers are stealing artworks from people like Loish and unofficially selling her artwork as a nft. I honestly think this is more of rich people trend than a way to support artists

    • @lucasdude

@@avananana Naw, I wouldn’t say your stupid (I say that just because not only some of us don’t truly know it, but I just don’t wanna call peeps stupid, I’d rather say that you don’t really know about NFT’s because they’re just now being brought to our attention). I’m just gonna still go on doing whatever I’ll do in the future, and I probably won’t invest, or join to make NFT’s. And like you said, I too don’t see any actual good reasoning for NFT’s being a thing. By the way, how are you doing today?

Better to see it more as a "receipt". When you buy something IRL, a proof of transaction is printed on a paper and given to you. When you buy some bullshit for cryptocoins, a proof of transaction is put into a large list (aka. a large blockchain). But this doesn't mean NFTs are worth a damn from a legal standpoint, because there's no legislation around it.

I remember Gorillaz announced they were coming out with NFTs and the fans were upset. One of their albums, Plastic Beach, was about pollution and the fans thought they were hypocrites. It turns out, the creators, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn weren’t aware of this decision and instead was the marketing team. They have posted an apology and it’s just an Instagram comment and the fans on Twitter are still saying they need to post a real apology.

Many artists actually hate NFT's. People are selling stolen art pieces at really high prices and they even stole a deceased artist's artwork and put it up as a NFT. I know that people's artwork get stolen all the time in social media but most of time it's only for exposure, it can be bad but not as bad as the amount of harm that NFT's cause at the environment. Even putting the stolen artworks aside, most of the people who buy NFTs doesn't care about the art at all. They're just trying to make profit of off it. Artists are literally selling their artwork to bunch of random people instead of their actual followers.

Things to look out for when you buy:
      1. check mark (this don't apply to rarible cuz that place kinda aids)
      2. Artist's social media. Did they publish news about going into crypto?
      3. If not sure at all just literally shoot a message to the artist asking if they are minting NFTs. If not, then don't buy. If yes, happy days.
