That was mainly Dave. He made sure Barret started receiving his royalty checks and in 2001 there were multiple Syd tracks on the Echoes- The Best Of Pink Floyd compilation. Syd got the royalties from those selections. I've once read I'm MOJO Magazine it was a couple million dollars. And in an interview with MOJO Syd's sister said about Dave 'He was the only one who cared, really'.
Was visiting unis with one of my kids, saw a wall plate in tribute to Syd who studied in what was Cambridge polytechnic. I wondered how many kids even look at it?

Joey Jordison was fired from Slipknot via email while he was in the hospital for Transverse Myelitis. Now THAT is heartbreaking 💔. He was a founding member, wrote most of the songs and played guitar. He passed away in July 2021. He's greatly missed.

He was replaced with Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, who really couldn't play bass, but who was an old friend of Anderson's and who shared Anderson's taste for a "quiet" non-partying lifestyle.

Stevie Nicks / Lindsey Buckingham got her into the band.. and she screwed the band and whoever . Eagles.. Eago’s is a better name.. they all needed different directions… but the drugs didn’t help. Watching Stewart Smith leave stage end of the Eagles set last year exit stage left quietly into the shadows before the end call ruined a good night… HE KEPT THE MUSIC ALL THE WAY.. filling in for their MISTAKES.. Yes, he got her in the band but she had a much more successful solo career than he did, and turned out to be a more prolific writer. For the Eagles, the bigger travesty was firing Don Felder. He was an equal business partner and they didn't treat him like one. They never sounded as good without him, all due respect to his replacement. He was the best guitar player to ever play in the Eagles, a massive part of their sound and he was able to cop all of Bernie Leadon's early stuff too.
When I was living in Romford, England back in 2009 I was surprised to see posters on telephone poles advertising acoustic Jon Anderson gigs at local pubs. I had seen Yes in the round back in 1979 or 1980 with thousands in attendance. I wish I'd gone to the acoustic gig.
Today it's a "Harvester" but back in the 1960's/'70's/'80's "The Greyhound Pub" in Chadwell Heath (Goodmayes end) had an annexe which they named "The Electric Ballroom" & groups played there, including Marilion & Girl. I'd seen the latter at Hammersmith supporting my favourite band "U.F.O" (Mogg/Schenker/Chapman etc) Phil Collen WAS their guitarist & I spoke to him in the "Greyhound" weeks before he then joined Def Leppard My Wife (then Fiancee') was living in Romford & she attended with me, all those gigs & "The Greyhound" Pub Incidentally, it was whilst my life WAS revolving around Chadwell Heath & Romford, I was a HUGE Yes fan All the lads (local Church) who attended that night we met Phil Collen were huge fans of Chris Squire BTW.
Not mentioned was the fact Pink Floyd paid Royalties to Sid till he died and then I’m not sure, he may still be getting paid, but I think that was rude not to mention!
In 1996 I saw The Allman Bros Band play at the Mid State Fair in Paso Robles CA. Dickey Betts was wasted. He ended up stumbling off the stage while Warren Haynes played a seemingly endless guitar solo. I left as it was all too weird. The concert turned into the Warren Haynes Band.
There are many like that. In the Canadian group lead singer was Bon McBride. He had a golden voice. But he became addicted to heroin. He tried a solo career but that did not become successful. He cleaned himself up and got married. He was a devoted husband and father to his step-daughter. She tragically died and he couldn't handle it. He fell back into drug use and OD'd. 😢 Many years later I still miss his voice
Tom Petty fired Stan Lynch reportedly because Tom "didn't think a drummer was important and were interchangeable". He did eventually figure it out, but Stan was still gone.
Stan was pretty much by mutual agreement and even though I love the band with him, it seems he pushed things pretty far to the limit to stay with one foot out and the other he took himself out. They were two complex characters but one was in charge. I don't think Tom is an example of this, the guy had the same team for most of his career and was very loyal.

Anthony Phillips got stage fright apparently so left Genesis...BIG mistake. Actually, he thought he could do better..another big mistake. The solo albums where whimsical flops..the best thing about them were the album covers. I used to date the artist who created them and met "Ant" a few times. An unpleasant and resentful narcissist who ran interference in my relationship, resenting the time my partner spent with mrvand to this day remains single, and dining out on box sets, a few bits of unmemorable incidental music and guest slots . The artist and I didn't last anyway because I went to university. We are both happily married to others with families and thriving careers. He is probably still in his parents ' home, stewing over the memories of yesteryear.
Rick Wright seemed like a true Gentleman who'd never hurt a fly or say anything bad about anyone... it's a shame how he was treated whilst he had writers block... but I guess he got the last laugh after all...
Wasn't just writers block. He was going through a divorce and he wasn't getting to see his kids. His solo album wasn't a success and so all this was creating depression. But instead of being a friend, Roger chose to remain a business colleague. Sad.

They left out the most famous of all....Pete Best. He was fired for Ringo and weeks later the rest was history.. There were already serious issues. Ringo was the only real professional musician at the time playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricane's but Pete also wanted to stay a Teddy. He was not a good drummer as well as never trying to improve.. But really try living with that...

The most heartbreaking firing of a band member is missing here. 1973, when Dave Brock fired Lemmy Kilmister from Hawkwind. This has been breaking Dave's heart every day ever since !! As Lemmy later said "Dave fired me,and fucked up his band !"

The left out part. Dennis DeYoung''s control had them doing almost operatic versions of the songs, limiting the size of venues in which they could perform, and very few tickets were sold. This happened as everybody else was filling stadiums.
Marky got kicked out of the Ramones, then returned 5 years later. Phil Rudd got kicked out of AC/DC a few times and came back. Ace Frehley got kicked out of Kiss a few times.
After the success of "Hell Freezes Over" Felder started digging into the bands finances, which he had every right to do since he was an official member of the band since 1974. (Walsh and Schmit were employees (much like Richard Wright) and still are. This angered Frey and Henley along with their manager Irving Azoff (How dare he question "the Gods"), so they fired Felder for looking at their earnings.

He was subsequently discovered by Animals bassist Chas Chandler playing in Greenwich Village the very next year, who took him back to England with him. When comes to the DeYoung\STYX split, I appreciate the accuracy of the reporting here. Starting with that his former band mates fired eplaced DeYoung rather then the common false reports that he left the band of his own accord. Also, they cover both sides here as well. More recently you mostly see the revisionist history told that attempts to put his former band mates in a better shade of light.
It seems somewhat more consolidated now, at least in the root cause. Dennis DeYoung was the leader/tyrant (depending on point of view) and the other members wanted a bigger say. The other stuff stemmed from that. DeYoung got fired or quit when he didn't tour because he was or wasn't having vision issues? There wouldn't have been an issue were it not for the root cause of who was in charge. DeYoung spending too much on the Kilroy Was Here stage show? Same. Even the creative differences were not insurmountable. After all, both factions currently play mostly the same songs, with the exceptions of Babe and a couple other minor songs.
Pink Floyd. The Wall came out my senior year of high school. I don't know how it got past the faculty but we had the song on the ballot for class song. It won, hands down. Finally, some adult listened to that first sentence, "we don’t need no education." They forced us to have another vote with another song. We chose Lynard Skynard's Freebird. When we marched onto the field, the faculty only played the opening instrumental. I think Freebird was class song for at least 10 years. I know when I attended my cousin's graduation it was... and they still wouldn't play the lyrics.

I always thought one of the more notorios firings was Def Leppard firing Pete Willis. They wanted their produce Mutt Lang to do the dirty work, but he wouldn't dovit because Willis was a founding member. The Leppard guys never did anythig like that again. They kept their one armed drummer.
Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow is legit one of my favorite albums of all time. While I find most who are familiar rate it highly.... but damn it's overlooked.
As I understand the issue (s), Sydd wanted to keep the music under ground, he did not want fame or it's trappings. He felt betrayed by his so called best friend Roger, he was a undiagnosed diabetic. Some of his other friends said that Sydd would often act like he was having a mh crisis if he thought that others in the room thought that he was. There is so much info out there & these are just a few that I have read.
Duane wasn’t a writer, but Gregg wrote some of the classics. I’ll take a “Whipping Post” “Midnight Rider” or “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” over a dozen “Ramblin’ Mans.” “Blue Sky,” “Liz Reed,” and some others are a different story, of course, but I generally prefer Gregg’s songs to Dickey’s, even if there aren’t quite as many of them.

some people can do lots of drugs and still function and others can't like Brian Jones and Syd Barrett. I don't think it's how much drugs, it's how badly are the drugs or mental illness affecting someone.
Bands always have some friction. They're like marriages but with multiple people and without the love. That's why musicians in a band often aren't the best available, they're the most compatible.
Jake E Lee was fired by Sharon from her husband's band while Ozzy himself was fired from Black Sabbath. And, Dave Mustaine might have something to say about the manner in which he was asked to leave Metallica. Steven Adler was high on drugs when GnR fired him and Axl Rose fired most of his co-original members from the AFD line up. Glen Matt Mattlock was replaced by Sid Vicious. Who else? Pete Best?
Glen Matlock chose to leave,he wasn't fired and GNR didn't give a fuck about anyone using drugs,it was the fact Steve Adler was so out of it he couldn't drum,had he been able to put thetracks down then it wouldn'thave been a problem. Slash,Duff and Izzy and later Matt Sorum were very heavy alcohol and cocaine users ,while izzy and Slash were on heroin though Izzy did get clean well before the others.

I always thought, it was guitarrist Pat McGlynn, who was fired from BCR due to insufficient instrumental skills. But Les later said, that Pat left, after he was sexually assaulted by Tam Paton, and Paton was subsequently beaten up by the das of Pat.
Drug and alcohol addicts being kicked out is not heartbreaking. Addicts only think about themselves and are not team players. Erratic behaviour or mental issues in general should not be tolerated or your band will suffer.
The Syd Barret ending isn't quite accurate. In 1975 or so both David and Roger have talked in interviews that I've listened to in which they both say; that one day a slightly overweight, balled chap with his eyebrows shaved off silently walked into the studio they were recording in and nobody really paid any attending at all. Until someone noticed that it was in fact Syd and they said he had very little to say and didn't stay long... i realize that this has nothing to do with his prior mis-behaviors. But he did make that appearance back into the bands world very briefly. Very interesting little docu here.
Brian Jones was the best musician in the Stones, if he was struggling with drugs ,did any of the other Stones not think about ,instead of sacking him ,why did they not help him ,i mean he was the one who stared the Stones , he made up the name the Rolling Stones, they had no right to fire him, he had more right to fire them.

He was replaced with Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, who really couldn't play bass, but who was an old friend of Anderson's and who shared Anderson's taste for a "quiet" non-partying lifestyle.

Yes, he got her in the band but she had a much more successful solo career than he did, and turned out to be a more prolific writer. For the Eagles, the bigger travesty was firing Don Felder. He was an equal business partner and they didn't treat him like one. They never sounded as good without him, all due respect to his replacement. He was the best guitar player to ever play in the Eagles, a massive part of their sound and he was able to cop all of Bernie Leadon's early stuff too.
When I was living in Romford, England back in 2009 I was surprised to see posters on telephone poles advertising acoustic Jon Anderson gigs at local pubs. I had seen Yes in the round back in 1979 or 1980 with thousands in attendance. I wish I'd gone to the acoustic gig.
Today it's a "Harvester" but back in the 1960's/'70's/'80's "The Greyhound Pub" in Chadwell Heath (Goodmayes end) had an annexe which they named "The Electric Ballroom" & groups played there, including Marilion & Girl.
I'd seen the latter at Hammersmith supporting my favourite band "U.F.O" (Mogg/Schenker/Chapman etc)
Phil Collen WAS their guitarist & I spoke to him in the "Greyhound" weeks before he then joined Def Leppard
My Wife (then Fiancee') was living in Romford & she attended with me, all those gigs & "The Greyhound" Pub

In 1996 I saw The Allman Bros Band play at the Mid State Fair in Paso Robles CA. Dickey Betts was wasted. He ended up stumbling off the stage while Warren Haynes played a seemingly endless guitar solo. I left as it was all too weird. The concert turned into the Warren Haynes Band.

There are many like that. In the Canadian group lead singer was Bon McBride. He had a golden voice. But he became addicted to heroin. He tried a solo career but that did not become successful. He cleaned himself up and got married. He was a devoted husband and father to his step-daughter. She tragically died and he couldn't handle it. He fell back into drug use and OD'd. 😢 Many years later I still miss his voice

Stan was pretty much by mutual agreement and even though I love the band with him, it seems he pushed things pretty far to the limit to stay with one foot out and the other he took himself out. They were two complex characters but one was in charge. I don't think Tom is an example of this, the guy had the same team for most of his career and was very loyal.

Anthony Phillips got stage fright apparently so left Genesis...BIG mistake. Actually, he thought he could do better..another big mistake. The solo albums where whimsical flops..the best thing about them were the album covers. I used to date the artist who created them and met "Ant" a few times. An unpleasant and resentful narcissist who ran interference in my relationship, resenting the time my partner spent with mrvand to this day remains single, and dining out on box sets, a few bits of unmemorable incidental music and guest slots . The artist and I didn't last anyway because I went to university. We are both happily married to others with families and thriving careers. He is probably still in his parents ' home, stewing over the memories of yesteryear.
Rick Wright seemed like a true Gentleman who'd never hurt a fly or say anything bad about anyone... it's a shame how he was treated whilst he had writers block... but I guess he got the last laugh after all...
Wasn't just writers block. He was going through a divorce and he wasn't getting to see his kids. His solo album wasn't a success and so all this was creating depression. But instead of being a friend, Roger chose to remain a business colleague. Sad.

He was only able to watch the band he carried water for when they were desperate for a drummer sore into the sky without him. He got nothing while they were cranking out hit after hit and touring the world without him.
As for him getting royalties. That only happened recently when The Beatles released their "The Beatles Anthology" series. Up until then he wasn't getting anything.
When that happened he became a millionaire from only the few songs he played drums on, which was enough to make him a millionaire. Most of those songs by themselves wouldn't even chart and Pete never would have made any money on them, but because they were early Beatle songs, people wanted to buy them and hear them.
When you say, he is receiving royalty cheques on a regular basis from apple music and the bands records. That is ONLY on the few recordings he is playing drums on. NOT the entire Beatle catalog.
Never the less, he is now a millionaire due to his association with The Beatles early on in their career back in the 1950's and 1960's. They made a few demos and records back then and Pete Best is the drummer on those demos and records.

When comes to the DeYoung\STYX split, I appreciate the accuracy of the reporting here. Starting with that his former band mates fired
eplaced DeYoung rather then the common false reports that he left the band of his own accord. Also, they cover both sides here as well. More recently you mostly see the revisionist history told that attempts to put his former band mates in a better shade of light.
It seems somewhat more consolidated now, at least in the root cause. Dennis DeYoung was the leader/tyrant (depending on point of view) and the other members wanted a bigger say.
The other stuff stemmed from that. DeYoung got fired or quit when he didn't tour because he was or wasn't having vision issues? There wouldn't have been an issue were it not for the root cause of who was in charge. DeYoung spending too much on the Kilroy Was Here stage show? Same.
Even the creative differences were not insurmountable. After all, both factions currently play mostly the same songs, with the exceptions of Babe and a couple other minor songs.
Pink Floyd. The Wall came out my senior year of high school. I don't know how it got past the faculty but we had the song on the ballot for class song. It won, hands down. Finally, some adult listened to that first sentence, "we don’t need no education." They forced us to have another vote with another song. We chose Lynard Skynard's Freebird. When we marched onto the field, the faculty only played the opening instrumental. I think Freebird was class song for at least 10 years. I know when I attended my cousin's graduation it was... and they still wouldn't play the lyrics.

I always thought one of the more notorios firings was Def Leppard firing Pete Willis. They wanted their produce Mutt Lang to do the dirty work, but he wouldn't dovit because Willis was a founding member. The Leppard guys never did anythig like that again. They kept their one armed drummer.

Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow is legit one of my favorite albums of all time. While I find most who are familiar rate it highly.... but damn it's overlooked.
As I understand the issue (s), Sydd wanted to keep the music under ground, he did not want fame or it's trappings. He felt betrayed by his so called best friend Roger, he was a undiagnosed diabetic. Some of his other friends said that Sydd would often act like he was having a mh crisis if he thought that others in the room thought that he was. There is so much info out there & these are just a few that I have read.
Dickie betts wrote as much music for that band as either brother.
Duane wasn’t a writer, but Gregg wrote some of the classics. I’ll take a “Whipping Post” “Midnight Rider” or “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” over a dozen “Ramblin’ Mans.”
“Blue Sky,” “Liz Reed,” and some others are a different story, of course, but I generally prefer Gregg’s songs to Dickey’s, even if there aren’t quite as many of them.

Bands always have some friction. They're like marriages but with multiple people and without the love. That's why musicians in a band often aren't the best available, they're the most compatible.
Or, make it big when they sack the dead wood.

Glen Matlock chose to leave,he wasn't fired and GNR didn't give a fuck about anyone using drugs,it was the fact Steve Adler was so out of it he couldn't drum,had he been able to put thetracks down then it wouldn'thave been a problem. Slash,Duff and Izzy and later Matt Sorum were very heavy alcohol and cocaine users ,while izzy and Slash were on heroin though Izzy did get clean well before the others.

Drug and alcohol addicts being kicked out is not heartbreaking. Addicts only think about themselves and are not team players. Erratic behaviour or mental issues in general should not be tolerated or your band will suffer.

The Syd Barret ending isn't quite accurate. In 1975 or so both David and Roger have talked in interviews that I've listened to in which they both say; that one day a slightly overweight, balled chap with his eyebrows shaved off silently walked into the studio they were recording in and nobody really paid any attending at all. Until someone noticed that it was in fact Syd and they said he had very little to say and didn't stay long... i realize that this has nothing to do with his prior mis-behaviors. But he did make that appearance back into the bands world very briefly. Very interesting little docu here.
