Story 1: And the story never goes into why OP has to call her MIL, "Mrs. Cooper," rather than MIL's first name or "Mom." Also, Interestingly, OP and her husband didn't set boundaries, they immediately built an impenetrable wall against MIL.

I can probably answer the first part. I often wondered why my mother called her MIL, my grandmother, Mrs. Burns. I thought at least she could call her by her first name. The reason why, they didn't have a close relationship. On the other hand my fiance already calls my mother Mom & I call his Mom. Great relationship. Sorry I'm rambling. I'm realizing it's after midnight, and should've waited til I had some sleep.

@basubenburns you answered that perfectly. A MIL that doesn't like you will not drop the formality . One that likes you will correct that quickly and have you call them by their first name or Mom

It's used 2 or 3 times in just about every story.

Mrs. Cooper needs to mind her own business and let her son and her daughter-in-law plan their own family on their own.

Didn’t sound like you or your husband said anything or even tried to have a discussion, you went to extremes immediately. You both could have asked for family counseling or just plain set down together and talked! Your actions were the toxic behavior you never tried anything, just cut and ran.
