  • Can you freeze-dry guacamole and have it reconstitute to taste the same? I was totally skeptical, until I tried it!
    Now we'll have jars of this on our pantry shelf, just waiting until we're ready for taco night. Come watch as I freeze-dry avocados, guacamole, cilantro and even sliced lime wedges... yes, they actually come back just like a fresh lime!

    A couple notes from my own avocado FD-ing experience. Avocados have oil in them so they will go rancid over time. For that reason I don't package them for long-term storage. I'd consider them to be for short term storage only for that reason. I tried blending them into a powder and the heat from the blender actually made them be mush because of the heat/oil. If you want a powder, I'd go with the bag and rolling pin method. I actually put mine in the freezer for storage after freeze drying just because I don't use them all that fast and I don't want the oil to turn on me. I have a few in my fridge right now waiting to be processed in the freeze dryer. I only use them in smoothies and this is perfect for that. I also freeze dry my berry and spinach blend and Greek yogurt for smoothies.

    • @juliabrown5948
      @juliabrown5948 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Great tips! Question about your FD another. Do you FD all the components separately (berries, spinach, yogurt) and then rehydrate and combine, or do you FD them as a mixture? I'm wanting to make smoothie packs for my kids and I asked can't figure out the best way to do it and still have a smoothie texture, not a flavored milk texture, if that makes sense

    • @mrdeleoco8702

      Hey what a great idea! dried avocado for smoothie , creaminess I assume? like a banana would do but not super sweet. The fresh ones sure do it well but i never have seen the dried one.

    • @Jodi_W
      @Jodi_W ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@juliabrown5948 I run into complications because different family members want different things in their smoothies. My husband doesn't want yogurt but I want yogurt, for instance. So I tend to FD things separately just for that reason. That also leaves the individual items available for other uses. I blend the mixed berries so they FD better and can be powdered easier. That powder is beautiful in a jar! Having said that, for convenience for MYSELF I am planning to make complete smoothies and then FD them. I may leave out the avocado for the reasons stated - which may be overly cautious but avocados aren't cheap so I'm going to do what I think preserves them the longest. I make a pretty complex smoothie because it's often my only 'meal' of the day so I put a lot of stuff in it for nutrition. Since it's for your kids, I'd make up what they like and FD it all together to make it easy for them without having to measure.
      It may take some trial and error to get the consistency you want. I'd start with less water and work up to the thickness that's preferred. You can also add in some chopped ice at the end.

    • @Jodi_W
      @Jodi_W ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@mrdeleoco8702 I actually use the avocado for the nutritional value. I tried eating them on toast and I just didn't like the texture and flavor. I'm a very picky eater so I have to sneak good foods in on myself. 😄 It does make it creamier, though! Bananas don't agree with me so it is kind of my substitute that way, too. I use some honey for sweetness (not in the FD version) and may try some stevia to see how that compares for the FD version. The honey is better immunity-wise but not something I'll FD. At the time I worked up my smoothie 'recipe' I was not eating much at all so it was my main/only nutrition of the day. I cram what I can in there so it's a very dense drink.

    Thanks for posting this video. We love avocados, but with only 2 of us eating on them they sometimes go bad before we can get them ate. I wasn't sure, but thought we could and now I know we can. Thanks again!

    Hi. Just letting you know that you can vacuum seal multiple jars at a time in your freeze dryer. Works really good and fast.
    Just put in a tray with jars lids lightly on and vacuum seal for two mins. You can TH-cam it 😊

      Have you had any issues with the plug on the back of the trays, taking it off and back on? I've heard that's a fragile point for the FD and I am scared to break it

    • @suziereinhart7975

      We plug that hole with a wet paper towel loosely. Sometimes it blows that paper towel out, but we still a suction. We’ve had our FD for 5 years and never had a problem with it.

      @@juliabrown5948 YES!!! More people have had to buy a new plug than you would understand. I've had it for 6 years and that little red tab breaks easily!!!! So cheap to buy a sealer and lids and just take a few seconds to close each one. Yep - I found out fast to NOT USE THE VERY EXPENSIVE FREEZE DRYER TO SEAL JARS! Just my opinion but . . .

    Freeze dried avocados are like green velvet. I did try to mix equal parts salsa with mine after mashing. They came out very good, but even though I used lime juice the color is sort of unappealing. We love it and use it anyways. I like how you sliced them and used jars. I mashed and use mylar. I have an Avid Armor chamber sealer. I like the comments below about shorter term storage! Thanks for that.

    • @prdprdprdprdprdel
      @prdprdprdprdprdel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joehajjar5246 I genuinely don't know what the brand is.. i had red ones that said "O2 absorber" and blue ones that said "O2O" nothing about a brand.. When you pull a vacuum, there's a bit of oxygen left. When there's a bit of oxygen left, the food can still oxidize.. The pouch can absorb the bit of oxygen your vacuum pump couldn't pull out, therefore making the food last longer..

      Harvest Right freeze dryers are notorious for sending out untested, broken machines. There are Facebook groups dedicated to trying to help new owners. We just got ours working after 2 months, very little care from the company And absolutely NO HELP from them. There's a return shipping fee and restocking fee, figure roughly 1k dollars just to get it out of your home.

    Great video. Unless you're dealing with powders don't worry so much about adding too much water. It's only going to soak up what it originally had if youre not leaving it to sit forever and then you can just dump off the excess. It's better than having hard pieces and rubbery pieces in food from being too conservative with the moisture.

    Another trick to getting your vacuumed lids off is to use the edge of a table spoon.
    Run it between where the glass threads and jar lid start to meet and you can easily pry the lids off with no damage.
