Repairing Inflatable Pin Holes, Punctures, and Tears

  • In this video I demonstrate how to repair a set of pin holes, a puncture, a seam split on an inflatable pool toy. I use cotton balls and rubbing alcohol to clean the spots before repairing them. Then I uses rounded patches of vinyl and a Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) based glue to bond the patch to the toy. Specifically I am using HH-66 brand of vinyl cement. Please comment below. Any suggestions or corrections are completely welcome.
    If planning to do something like this yourself, make sure to do so in a well-ventilated room so as not to breath the glue fumes.
    While I love to describe the many projects I have done, if they inspire you to do something, you do so at your own risk. The glues and solvents I use can be toxic and vinyl is not breathable and can cause suffocation.

    2 things I have also found useful:
    1. I put waxed paper over a new patch and then press firmly on the waxed paper to seat the patch. If it is laying flat, you can place a heavy weight over the waxed paper and it will keep the patch flat and tight while it dries. When the glue is fully dry, the waxed paper will peel right off.
    2. After a patch has completely dried, I sometimes run a bead of glue all the way around the edges of the patch and then let it set up. It seals the patch and prevents any curling up of the edges or peeling back.

      +Thumper1044 The glue I am using in the video sets in about 5 minutes, so it is almost not worth trying to clamp it under anything heavy. I have however run glue around the edge of a patch, but for the most part if I applied the patch well enough I won't do that.

    This was so incredibly helpful - thank you! I got a tear in an inflatable vinyl suit and was despondent that I'd never be able to fix it, but following your tutorial I was able to fix the tear, reinforce the seams. Now I have a very full, very happy toy ready to be blown up. Cannot thank you enough

    Do not stick the patch on immediately. Either let it sit for at least a minute or gently blow on the patch and surface you want to apply it on until the glue is no longer shiny, then put the patch on. If you put it on wet then it will just slide and curl up at the edges and not stick well.

    With the seam rip, would it be possible to accidently have glue seap inside and attach to the other side? With all that massaging I'm curious to know if you've ever glued the inside together accidently.

    • @HeathDragon

      +kellymccabeful Yes, the glue quite frequently does seep into the toy. As long as you peel the two sides of the toy apart before the glue fully sets you will be okay.

    in seam split how do you preventi the glue from sticking to inside and other side of the inflatable? It always happens to me. What about doing a negative repair for seams (i mean inside instead of outside)? is it a good idea?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I make sure to pull the two sides of the inflatable apart before the glue sets. As long as you pull it apart once or twice it won't stick anymore after that. And yes, I like to do patches on the inside whenever possible.

      The HH-66 vinyl cement I typically use dries so fast it really isn't necessary to clamp it for an extended period. However, other vinyl cements may take longer. You can always check the instructions for the glue you are using.

    Hey Heath Dragon, I don't know, if you will still read this, since the Video was a while back ago, but can I do the same glueing you did on pinholes, when they are on the seams, but small enough, that it's really only noticble through the air rushing through, when up close? Because I got a Baphnedia from BeiLe, but sadly found leaks alrady and one of them being the one I mentioned.

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would not recommend using just glue on a seam that is beginning to split. You really want to glue on a patch for seam repairs.

      Most pool toys are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). So you would want to use PVC to repair it. I usually use scrap vinyl from other toys. If you don't have any scrap, you can always buy one of those really cheap inflatable mats from the store to use as material.

    Heh. I accidentaly almost tore off one of "nematocyst" or these frills on an big mouth inflatable jellyfish swim ring (one of my fav inflatables btw.). The samage is comparable to semi-tear/semi-seam split. I guess this video will be helpful. ... From this what I inspected, the only way to fix this is to glue a patch from the inside and then glue the semi-torn off nematocyst/frill over it. I mean over the patch. And heh... I just did that and it wasn't as easy as it seemed, the patch slightly dislocated and some glue got on the clear top part. It turned out sloppy but it should get the job done. I've seen worse, more sloppy inflatable repair jobs than mine. Besides. It's like scars on your toys. Adding... Climate? And in my opinion it shows you care about them, not simply discard them and buy a new one.

    how long does it take to dry and be ready to be used again?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The time will vary a lot depending on the amount of glue put on the patch. The glue will make the patch soft and flexible and as the glue cures the patch will return to it's regular stiffness. When the patch feels normal again it is cured. But typically overnight is plenty of time.

      I would not recommend that.

    Where do you get the patch from

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The patch I used is a scrap of vinyl from another toy, however you can find repair kits with both adhesive and vinyl at the local store.

    Great video but where can I buy vinyl patches?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just used scraps of vinyl from another inflatable. You can sometimes find vinyl patch kits at the store in the camping section near the air mattresses.

    What kind of glue is this?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using HH-66 vinyl cement.

    Wouldn't it be better to place some book where the patch is to add even pressure to the patch and make sure all wrinkles are gone, and to make sure thee glue adhesives really set before inflating the toy again.

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This glue sets in just 5 minutes, but placing something on top of it is a good idea to keep it wrinkle free as it cures and especially useful if using slower acting glue. The cure time for the glue I am using varies from a few hours to a day. And yes, wait until it fully cures before inflating.

    Can this work on an air mattress?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it definitely can. It can be tricky if the leak is in the flocked portion of the air mattress.

    Dont you use gloves when you use the vinyl cement?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Huntthunder It is probably a good idea. I am obviously not in the video, but I imagine it is not very healthy to be touching the solvent.

    What kind of glue

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using HH-66, but you can typically find a patch kit that contains a small tube of glue and patching material at the local store.

    will this work on yard inflatables?

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This do not believe this would be optimal for those light weight fabric inflatables used to decorate peoples' yards.
