    So I just want to say this. While the story that Tortorella wanted Duclair gone is what the major outlets tend to report about the situation, it's absolutely NOT the truth. That's not how that went down at all according to Tortorella and what he told me personally. I happened to meet John Tortorella at a veterinary conference the next morning on Sunday. In typical Tortorella style he leaked many things including that Panarin and Bobrovsky would be retained for the playoff run, but the organization had given up hope of re-signing them.
    I asked him personally about the Duclair trade and he intimidated that he had nothing to do with it, and that he didn't agree with it. Tortorella saw Duclair as a project and as a guy he could turn into a true star if given enough time, and around 12 hours after the trade occurred he told me and several others that he felt that he (Tortorella) had lost that chance to help Duclair. Tortorella ended his statement on the matter saying that he hoped Duclair would get a better opportunity with more playing time and less competition in Ottawa.
    What Tortorella told me that day was echoed in reports from local sources and news media that Tortorella tore through the locker room after being told of the trade, trying to catch Duclair before he left. Local friends of some of the team said that the players had confirmed that this happened. The trade shocked Tortorella. After talking, Duclair left Tortorella one of his sticks as a parting gift; beat journalists reported (with pictures) that Tortorella used the stick at practice for the remainder of the season.
    I don't usually make declarative statements, and I am unlikely to do so on this channel again. But this is the rare occasion I do actually have direct knowledge on a situation. This was something I got candid information on, directly from the source, right after it happened.
    As for the trade from the front office perspective. If you ask around some of the player haunts near Nationwide Arena, the local story is that Dzingel was acquired because of his friendship with Duchene and his time at Ohio State. The front office at the time believed that by getting Dzingel, if he and Duchene could continue their Ottawa chemistry, it would be much easier to convince Dzingel to re-sign with a competitive team in a city he had called home for several years. With Dzingel in the fold, it would make it much more plausible to keep Duchene. The two of them could then fill the organizational holes in the top-6. This of course backfired as Dzingel cratered and then clashed with Tortorella and teammates. Ironically Duchene wound up loving Columbus all on his own and started to gel with the team and considers many of them to be true friends. However Columbus was unwilling to match Nashville's $56m offer (because they would also lose another 1st round pick) and Duchene wound up leaving too.

    • @LieuFang
      @LieuFang 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Part of Tortorella's statement, as verbatim as I could record it that day:
      Tortorella: "That [Duclair Trade] was hard for me last night, you never want to lose a guy out of the room like that."
      Audience Member: "It broke my heart!"
      Tortorella: "It broke mine too. He was working so hard those last few games, I'll miss him. I really want him to go far."

There has to be something beneath the surface here, behind closed doors that we're not privy to. It really hurts as a fan when you've been following him since junior days in the Remparts.

      yeah, the problem is, when he is stuggling offensively, he hasnt really been defensively solid. He is a player that if he could give you a consistent 20-25 goals and 40-50 points. it would be fine, but if he keeps stuggling and hitting these long dryspells that he has been previously, he might be too much of a liability for a top 6 role, but also too good for a bottom 6 or top 9. He needs to find consistensy and he will find himself on a team as a solid second liner. thats what i think his potential is at least.

  • @goodkeyfitness
    @goodkeyfitness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good analysis. Despite the comments that pop out about sens fans thinking Dorion dropped the ball, the vast majority of us are fine with what happened. We wanted to see if he could achieve some kind of scoring consistency, as did the sens management and they offered him several years at over 4 mil. He wanted 5+ over longer term. No meeting of minds there and he was trying to extort the team and the cap space. He could have gotten this same deal 1.7, or up to 4 with Ottawa and stuck his nose up at it. He'll regret it and we'll be just fine with who we already have.

    You've really taken Duclair and Tortorella's relationship out of its context. Both have been very clear that they have a good relationship. Torts has even said that he really likes Duke. Duke came to Columbus to work on his game under Torts. Torts loved that and said he was sad to see him go at the trade deadline. Was it a great fit there? No, and it probably wouldn't work long-term in Torts' system, but there's no animosity there.

    The most thorough analysis I've seen on this. I think the Sens still booted the ball though. Here's why. If they give him a QO, they don't have to elect arbitration, they can make DuClair do it. If that's the case, then OTT can choose only 1 yr if they want. OTT had the cap space for one year. Plus, if he signs anywhere else at 1.7, they'll get a 3RDP as compensation. To me, this just shows that OTT is cheap franchise. It's only a 1 yr deal. DuClair also did the right thing b/c he got a raise. Now, did he do the right thing to begin with by firing his agent?
