kinda surprised Marchand is “only” borderline. for me he’s a first ballot guy. one team player, leaves everything out there, consistently one of the hardest players to play against. he’s exactly the kind of rat you want. on that note i’d also be willing to include M. Tkachuk at this point although he’s obviously still young and has a lot to achieve. but for the same reasons as Marchand for me he is HOF material already
As much as I despise Marchand, I'd have to agree. He's the heart and soul of the bruins if you ask me, especially since Bergeron retired. Marchand and Bergeron ARE the bruins in my mind. Marchand is usually a lock for 30ish goals every year, can play in every situation, and he's an extremely effective agitator, hence why I don't like him lol. Not sure how much hardware he's got, but he's definitely been inpactful for his whole career. He's this generation's Ulf Samuelsson, people will definitely remember and talk about him HOF or not
Definately has the stats, but his attitude over the years is DEFINATELY going to hurt him. When you have to get a call from the home office to be told as an adult man to STOP LICKING YOUR OPPONENTS, that HURTS your career impression.

I liked the aside about the league going back and adding overlooked two-way forwards from history to the HoF - could you see yourself doing a video on those?
Good show today. I was amazed with the selection of Jamie Benn for the Stars. I think for him to make it though he would have to hit the 500 goal level and he is about 140 or so away from that. I really wish that Joe Pavelski would have played one more year and had a chance for 500 goals, but alas........ It would be interesting to see into the future to see if some of the Stars young talent plays up to that level and makes the HoF. Johnston, Robertson, Hintz, Heiskanen, Stankoven, ....maybe even Harley and Bourque.....Oettinger.....one, two, none.....who knows.
I played a game while watching this by thinking which players theyd put into the HoF before Alex Mogilny, but then I realized they'd put them all in first.
Abnormality? He's also won like almost every title there is to this game. Cup, Olympic games, World Cup, WJC, First team all-star, Hart, Rocket.. to name a few.
I’m lucky to be in Colorado and a hockey fan. Started watching hockey as a 12 yr old in 95’. Not a bad time to start haha… was in fl visiting my grand parents during the final win. Was nuts. And Makar is only 25… so ya. He’s nuts. He’s a walk on imo as he’s done hall of fame stuff already by setting all time records for d men. Mack is for sure making it. Rant is almost there. But I’d say another few years and for sure.
Still the most overrated player in the league post 2000. He's a HoFer but mostly because of team play. Individually, he's meh. He has one Selke Award. Just over 1K games played (great, but not amazing), only 883 points (way less than a ppg player, good but not amazing), 372 goals :/, and 511 assists :/. Pretty pedestrian offensive numbers. His cups get him in. If he didn't have cups, he's not a HoFer. 1 Selke and those offensive numbers, nope.
@@adamlewis5700 Jonathan Toews is a 2 way forward, so saying he has “pedestrian offence numbers”, definitely shows how long you’ve been watching hockey.
@ ah yes you mean playing it and watching it my entire life (born in the 80s)…Toews is a two way forward with, let me check, ONE Selke Award…that’s it. He couldn’t have been that good defensively. And the way he was being hyped by Blackhawk fans like he was Crosby or Ovi’s equal was and is still laughable. Fringe HoFer in my opinion but he was a media darling and gets in because of cups.
Not really sure how Pasta and Drai are in and Marner is "close" and Rantanen isn't just straight up in. One of the best playoff performers in the past decade, Stanley Cup, multiple 100pt seasons. That's a really weird take.
As a Leafs fan Rantanen is one of the most underrated players in the NHL. IMO. Probably an unfortunate side effect of playing with MacKinnon and Makar. Though I fully agree Pasta and Drai are in and Marner is close. Don't see how that is confusing.
@MikeC-nu7ty yeah not saying those are confusing, but not saying Rantanen is in or close to in is absurd. Pasta and Drai are missing the most important piece of hardware. Rantanen went through Drai to get his and dominated in that series. Idk just doesn't make sense to me how he's not rated on the same level. Nate, Kuch and McDavid are all a step ahead of these guys and McDavid is a step ahead of Nate and Kuch. That's kind of why it's weird to me.
@chanses7576 like I said. It's just because he's living in MacKinnon and Makars shadow, unfortunately. I barely even see his name mentioned ever despite being a top 10-20ish player in the league (which is insane in the NHL these days). It's crazy. It's just such a stupid time in hockey talent wise that a lot of these great players don't get the recognition they deserve. Edit: changed to 10-20ish. He's amazing but I think top 10 is pushing it.
@@MikeC-nu7ty It's a blessing and a curse, so many fun players to watch but most casual fans just lock in on the top superstars. Before Johnny's unfortunate death, I truly don't think most eastern conference team fans knew he had 115 points, was 4th in hart voting and an arguable top 5 player in the league in his last season with the flames. Same could be said for Barkov before the cup run and many others.
Makar is already and unequivocally a lock. The man got all conceivable major trophies for his position at the age of 23. The only possible concern is longevity, but that wasn't really the case for Orr's induction either and he still is the measuring stick for all defensemen. As for Makar, even potential career-ending injury in the foreseeable future can't take away what he has already achieved. Sure, he's got some iffy defensive reputation for the time being, but stay-at-home tendencies tend to peak much later in players' career. Bar a terrible mishap, the dude's gonna be a HOF-Av until kingdom come. Much peace, brethren.
I’d also argue with putting Montour, McCann, Tarasenko, Seider, Rasmus Anderson, Nazem Kadri & Mackenzie Weegar on the board. Do I think they’re HOF? Maybe not but are worth mentioning.
Something cool you could do is try to predict the next Hall of Fame induction class, and maybe rank those players that have already missed out on their first ballot. Top 10 or 20?
Couture especially. To have your ankles so completely turned to dust so early in your career and keep going? I mean what could have been if Datsyuk hadn't have happened to him.
Looking at this list of players, this video gave me an idea for a future video. What's the next number to be retired for each team (past or current players).
8:20 I think if you’re gonna look at the blues it’s gonna have to be Robert Thomas. If he stays at the pace he’s at points wise for a few years and gets some Selke consideration than that gives him a good case
Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Anze Kopitar, Patrick Kane, Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Alex Pietrangelo and Drew Doughty would all get my vote without question. On the borderline I would put John Tavares, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Brad Marchand and Claude Giroux. Future HOF locks (pending health) - Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Auston Matthews, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Nikita Kucherov, Artemi Panarin, David Pasternak, Roman Josi.

@@ethanparker7900 The Blues won their first and only Stanley Cup because of Binnington. They were dead last in the NHL on Jan 1 2019. Brought Binnington up from the minors, won his first game in a shutout. Saved the Blues bacon numerous times in the 2019 playoffs. Played brilliantly in Game 7 in Boston, particularly in the first period when the Bruins had a huge edge in play. Yeah, just like Patrick Roy, Ron Hextall, and a host of other great goalies, Binner has a temper and can be a diva. But he is definitely not overrated - matter of fact, in the national media, he’s underrated.
How about a 2-way blast from the past - Claude Provost. 1005 games, 9 Stanley Cups, 11 ASGs, including 10 in a row + the first Bill Masterton Trophy. If Bobby Hull was still alive he would say, 'That SOB ... haha ... of course he should be in the hall.'
Provost and Dean Prentice deserve to get in, Prentice never won a Cup, but was one of the best two way forwards at the time. Provost was a superstar checker.
I think what a lot of people forget it that it is NOT the NHL Hall of Fame, it is the Hockey Hall of Fame so you also look at what they did in junior and international competitions. Corey Perry for example on his NHL record alone I don't think he would get in, throw in junior and international and he surely gets in.
Ovechkin being two years older than Sid, makes it unlikely they retire together. I don't think Ovechkin has the gas in the tank. Unless they throw him out there simply to stand at his spot on the powerplay ripping one timers.
Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Kane, Stamkos, Hedman, Mcdavid, Fleury, Kucherov and Vasilevskiy are the guys who could stop right now and be in for sure. Mackinnon and Makes are right there at the door too.
Marchand has a Stanley Cup, international championship resume, 2 first team all-star and 2 second team all-star., 1000+ games played and will likely break the 1000 point mark as well. As much as he is hated by so many i think he is a pretty safe bet he gets in the HOF
I think Makar becomes a HOF lock possibly even by the end of this season if he finishes with hardware of some kind (one of norris or stanley, etc), he's so close but obviously so young still
If a trend develops towards increased inclusion of defensive forwards, then Mark Stone will be a hallmark member of that group, especially with that Cup. Though there’s likely a brief third act still to come, after Vegas inevitably dumps him.
Uhm, Gabriel Landeskog not even mentioned??!! Perhaps you just forget about him because he's on IR or something because it's crazy to leave him out as a contender for this. Also not lifting Pettersson as a possible contender, and the hesitancy over Bäckström is actually WILD! Like I know there's a huge North American bias in who earns a spot in the hall of fame but some of these takes are beyond comprehension to me. Thank you for at least saying Hedman was definitely in haha - long time captain, excellent at defending, excellent points for a defender, 2 Stanley Cups as well as Norris and Calder is just one of the most shoe ins I've ever seen ^^
in my personal opinion i would include marchand, pietrangelo, and even letang if benn, panarin, pasta, josi and giroux are also being included. if eichel can win an individual award or two or another cup i would also like to see him in, he could’ve easily won the conn smthye in 2023. What are your thoughts on holtby? I think he has done more then enough to make the HOF so i was a little surprised to see him not on there. Love the videos keep it up!
I think Landeskog is also a borderline call for Colorado. I would leave him out - it's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good. And I think there's a case for him.
For me, if one needs to debate with oneself about a player, he is not a HOF’er. If one snap says yes to a person when considering their eligibility, then they are in.
He's not a lock at all. He won a cup on a ridiculously stacked team and his career regular season numbers are like 30th in the NHL depending on how you weigh them. He'll most likely get there. But he wouldn't if he retired today.
I agree with pretty much all of this tbh. But I just don’t think Jamie Benn is HOF bound. But he has had a resurgence, so maybe after a couple more good seasons, and hopefully a Stanley Cup.

As a Bruins fan, I agree that Marchand is a borderline candidate for the Hall of Fame. I find it ironic how many fans of other teams, especially the Leafs, seem certain he will be inducted.
I think what gets lost almost universally in these discussions, because you can't quantify it, is impact on the game of hockey. It's absolutely a thing. I'm not the biggest Marchand fan, but to me he's a no doubt HOFer. Everyone knows him, knows what he does, what he's done, he's a legend of the game. For chrissakes, they just put Roenick in there, and you can say it's bogus, and I do say it's bogus, but somebody has to actually make these decisions and it is not quite as stats-and-hardware based as people think when they're making the arguments. There is an X factor of recognition, reputation, and just flat out impact on the game of hockey. That's the reality of who gets in and who doesn't. The flip side of it is Marleau - guy beats Gordie's record, he should've been first ballot on that alone, but 2/3 of the continent didn't really notice his career.
@@Niam_Human Yeah, it was ridiculous. They passed on the all time games played leader in the history of the game, and put in the blowhard who once called out his commitment level. Can you imagine Jeremy Roenick calling out Patrick Marleau's commitment level? Jeremy Roenick, a guy who phoned in his last 5 years in the league. Just goes to show, it's the Hall of FAME, not the Hall of ACCOMPLISHMENT.
Maybe im just too high on Quinn Hughes, but he facilitates the entire offence pretty much every game. If he gets a cup on top of his norris, i would vault him to hall of fame immediately.
Surprised you didn't mention Logan Couture in San Jose. I doubt he gets in but he's had a long career, a few deep playoff runs, and he's had loooong stretches where he's been the best player on his team, so worthy of consideration.
Makar is a shoe-in. Makar and Bobby Orr are the only two D-men to win the Conn Smythe before their 24th birthday. Makar, Orr, and Lidstrom are the only three D-men to win the Norris and Conn Smythe in the same year
Carey Price winning gold at the 2014 Olympics does help his resume. But it makes me wonder if other players could have had that precious bump if the NHL players would have played at the '18 and '22 Olympics
Jamie Benn is the only one I wouldn't put a definitely mark next to. He's had a great career and he's the type of player worth debating about, but I would hazard a guess that most fans, if they had a vote today, would err on "no"
My big problems with the Hockey Hall of Fame voting process is the lack of transparency. Guys like Burns and Marchand should be no brainer Hall of Fame players, yet with precedent of comparable players like Gonchar and Tkachuk being snubbed, and with less deserving candidates getting in, it's just a complete guessing game for what the old geezers on the committee are thinking.

Tavares would at least have an Art Ross trophy if it weren't for two empty net goals on the last night of the season in 2013 by Jamie Benn.

Stupid lockout. Ovi obviously deserved it, but should have won the 2004-05 Calder and already have over 900 goals. Other than Ovi's rookie year, Crosby's rookie year probably the best since Selanne (I think the goalie stats from the Calder winners during the dead puck era are a little overdone)
Shea Webber is already in
Yes. Seems like a lock at this time :)

kinda surprised Marchand is “only” borderline. for me he’s a first ballot guy. one team player, leaves everything out there, consistently one of the hardest players to play against. he’s exactly the kind of rat you want. on that note i’d also be willing to include M. Tkachuk at this point although he’s obviously still young and has a lot to achieve. but for the same reasons as Marchand for me he is HOF material already
Marchand will probably get in, he'll just probably have to wait a while because people don't like him (similar to Jeremy Roenick)
Marchand to me is a no doubt HOF'er and I'm not a Bruins fan. Can't argue with his results.
@@Scoots_McGee Unlike Samuelsson Marchand has true all round ability and is not just a rat. He reminds me of Ted Lindsay, short, tough, a dirty stinker, but a truly talented Left winger.
The only one you put a check next to that I don't think makes it is Benn, I hope he gets in. I think that Tavares would get in before Benn and I'm not sure Tavares makes it, I hope he does. It took you too long to put a check mark next to Giroux! Thank you for another great video!
Would also pick Tavares before Benn.
Letang belongs in the hall of fame before any other defenseman
Surprised you didn’t mention TJ Oshie in that underrated 2-way forward category..

Jonathan Toews is still technically active and he's a lock.
Yes. He is active, but not on a roster.
@@adamlewis5700 On the 2010 Olympic team, Toew’s was voted best forward. And as for most overrated player, that’s definitely Elias Pettersson.
@@adamlewis5700 Jonathan Toews is a 2 way forward, so saying he has “pedestrian offence numbers”, definitely shows how long you’ve been watching hockey.

The next class is 100% gonna be Price, Chara, Keith and Thornton
Ovi (obviously 😂) Backstrom, and Carlson are all locks for me. Oshie would have had a shot if he had a been healthier throughout his career #ALLCAPS

Couture and Vlasic from the Sharks deserved a mention
Couture especially. To have your ankles so completely turned to dust so early in your career and keep going? I mean what could have been if Datsyuk hadn't have happened to him.
If tkachuk is a no I don’t think it will be long until everyone agrees that he will be. The last two years he raised his stock a ton
The question with Sidney Crosby is whether they will waive the three-year wait.
He's in the day he announces his retirement. Sid is a winner.
They will not.
Looking at this list of players, this video gave me an idea for a future video. What's the next number to be retired for each team (past or current players).
Pretty sure Dostal is now confirmed for the hall of fame.
8:20 I think if you’re gonna look at the blues it’s gonna have to be Robert Thomas. If he stays at the pace he’s at points wise for a few years and gets some Selke consideration than that gives him a good case

The flip side of it is Marleau - guy beats Gordie's record, he should've been first ballot on that alone, but 2/3 of the continent didn't really notice his career.
are they really give Marleau trouble to get into HOF. Who's running that shipwreck?
@@Niam_Human Yeah, it was ridiculous. They passed on the all time games played leader in the history of the game, and put in the blowhard who once called out his commitment level. Well Matthews is a lock as long as keeps what he does up, regardless if his team ever wins anything.
He's had a great career and he's the type of player worth debating about, but I would hazard a guess that most fans, if they had a vote today, would err on "no"
I actually think if makar for some reason played his last game yesterday, he’d get in
Perry is more likely than Benn to get in, like as in actually has a chance - I don't see Benn ever getting in.
