    The future : FLYING CAR

    • @Zaire82
      @Zaire82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sadly this will probably never exist.
      And hybrid vehicles will never be commercially available. Back to the Future's prediction can't happen. If cars could fly, roads would become redundant. Thousands of years of architecture, made useless. They'd also have to devise a new form of sky road. It would undoubtedly be more costly than slapping some tarmac and paint on the ground. The real future of cars is automation.

    • @tylermech66
      @tylermech66 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Zaire82 do you know how much money and resources are spent just on maintaining public roads? this would be a godsend. and maintaining "roads" in the air is as simple as a centralize computer network.
      Certainly a formidable undertaking, but achievable even with todays technology, and definatly cheaper than "slapping down some tarmac" as you'd be surprised how expensive that can be compared to programming some code.
      Of course that would be if we HAD flying cars, which we don't, do meh.

    • @Zaire82
      @Zaire82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tylermech66 That's still not realistic at all. That means every car would need to be automated, which would mean every car would be expensive. Not everyone can afford expensive things, so even if sky roads came about, it'd be similar to tram rails. Basically a single line in a whole city, county, or even the whole country. Virtually never being used.
      A big novelty.
      Besides, it's not so easy as just programming a car and telling it where to go.
      That might work with an individual car, but what about hundreds of millions of cars? They'd all need to coordinate perfectly, and no AI can handle that much.

    • @tylermech66
      @tylermech66 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible.

    • @Zaire82
      @Zaire82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tylermech66 It's not about whether it's achievable, it's about whether people would want to, or whether it's worth doing.
      People might want to try it, but they aren't going to want to spend a house's worth of cash on novelty transportation, unless they're excessively rich.

      Making the design for one is the easy part.
      Their existence requires a full revision of road law and airspace law, which is far too much work. These will never reach the roads. At best, they'd be limited to private property. That is why they don't already exist. We've had designs for ages already.

    Most flying cars I've seen advertised have limited range or airtime as well as lower speeds. 200 MPH and 500 mile range is on par with a real car. These specs are impressive! This is the best one I've ever seen advertised. I'd love to see what the interior looks like. I hope this becomes mass produced and affordable someday. I would love to own one. Sadly I don't believe it ever will be. Not because of the car, but because of bureaucracy. Flying cars have already been around for a long time now but we still don't see them in our skies I suspect for 3 main reasons. 1. Price (if there's enough demand it will be mass produced which would drive down the cost, but if it's too expensive there will never be enough demand. It's a Catch 22) 2. Proper infrastructure to support them (designating universally accepted air zones, paths, or skyways), charging or refueling stations, etc. 3. Safety and legal issues (an automated traffic control network would be best if the network itself is protected and does not crash or get hacked) and legal bodies such as FAA and NHTSA to enforce universally accepted practices and guidelines (not to mention creation of the legislation to begin with). Also lessons to help to familiarize the average person with airborne commuting which as an abstract concept sounds cool to practically everyone but would be alien or even terrifying to consider in practice for the vast majority of the general public. Without these issues resolved I firmly believe we will never see flying cars as an everyday reality in our lifetime, unfortunately. I wish I were wrong about this but this video was posted 7 years ago!

    I've been in aircraft maintenance for over 30yrs and I remember when I was in the Air Force when the V-22 Osprey came out with it's tilt rotor turboprop propulsion and the problems and crashes it encountered. It finally became feasible with better flight computers controlling its transition from vertical to horizontal flight. This particular craft is starting out around $279,000.00. And while it seems pretty reasonable in terms of capability and convenience it is lacking in proof of reliability. When you lose operation of a motor is there any redundancy to pick up the burden of that lost motor? In aviation redundancy is a major key to safety. How about flying in inclement weather or in icing conditions? This craft would seem fine in a fair weather environment but these are serious questions to pose to the manufacturer. Also, does it have the ability to be overridden for manual flight for enjoyment as well as emergency purposes? I love the design and idea of it but safety in aviation is always PARAMOUNT. I hope it works out for the manufacturer and that it continues to spawn more great ideas.

      Great points. I'm imagining any real flying car would have to be at least a quad rotor.

    • @natejmedia
      @natejmedia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I disagree entirely. I'm a fixed-wing pilot, and also have a lot of experience RC quad rotor flying. The reason why planes/helicopters can be safe is exactly what Racer X above said; safety (in redundancy) is critical and a major component of flight. With planes, if the engine dies, the wing is designed to continue to generate lift (not enough to keep you in the air), but certainly enough to allow for a controlled descent and a safe landing. That's how they're developed. WIth helicopters, a little less-so in the float down factor, but a helicopter's autorotation allows for lift to be continued to be generated from the friction of the air moving through the blades causes them to turn. turning helicopter blades creates lift. Again, it's not enough to keep you in the air, but will help to prevent falling out of the air like a rock. Quad rotors don't have either of these inherent safety features. Their rotors are too small to generate enough lift to make autorotation a viable means for coming down slow enough as to not cause damage, and they don't have wings, so there's nothing to generate lift, if a motor dies. Plus, if you can think of the physics of it. A quad is controllable by a very finite variation between all four motors working in harmony with each other. Straight and level flight is achieved through a computer controlling the output of all four motors independently and at thousands of times per second. Now think about one of the 4 going dead and the immediate unbalance of the entire system? Now you have 3 non-centered motors which will certainly throw it into a total death spin. The only way survival of a quad rotor failure could happen would be if the astronomical probability of all four motors failing at the same time. That way, at least you won't be literally spun out of control, but then you're still a giant piece of metal, generating no inherent lift; i.e. a rock. And metal is heavy! Down you go!

    I like the concept as it seems more practical and safe than most flying cars I saw so far.
    Personally I love to see the barrier between what was thought to be science fiction become reality. I myself love to check new upcoming technologies and your video actually gave me a small spark of creativity.
    As a kind of media addict, one technological concept I saw on movies was actually the wheels of the cars at the speed racer movie of 2008 and, of course this time on topic, the wheels of back to the future 2 and the levitation technology.
    Now of from the fiction back to the real world, there are some technologies which kind of evenly match these previously mentioned ones.
    To the speed racer wheels, what comes directly to mind is an old opto-mechanical computer mouse, surprisingly, just kind of reversing it, or system alike the ones at military tanks "wheels" but just to spin one ball and in 3D.
    To the flying system, your computer controlled and back engine propulsioned concept seems to be ideal and once I saw another concept which, instead of putting the lifting helix on top of the vehicle, put it at bottom as a single bigger helix which then could turn its downward engine to a more diagonal position so as to create forward motion. It seemed good but still prone to many accidents if the propulsion system could not change its angle fast enough to avoid accidents or change direction swiftly, as I don't remember any big enough wind that could assist with that. If using something like the "speed racer wheels", if the wheels position could change a little, kind of like the ones at back to the future, towards the middle of the car and their spin be used to power or assist one or more propulsion engines, while still having a second engine at the back for the forward propulsion, that could even be used on the "car" setting for acceleration purposes, you can already move on land, generate lift and quite the speed, you don't need big and clumsy wings, just a smart enough system to control direction mid-air, like a car air foil with the same flaps as a airplanes wing system or a system which redirects air hitting the vehicle at high speeds from one part of the vehicle to another a small pair of small frontwards engines or something else which you can use to create reverse force, to stop and move backwards

    • @rr2dee282

      Terrafugia was bought out by a Chinese firm. One of the largest losses to American ingenuity in my opinion. Ever since then we haven't heard much from them. This vehicle was being prototyped in 2015-2016. The company was founded by a group of MIT engineers and built the only FAA licensed and street legal flying car (transition), this was going to be their second flying car.

      Agreed. Another toy for the rich....and the Megawatt is delivered by the main Turbofan engine...which runs on nitro methane, methane is exhaust from animals (yes it runs on cattle farts and glowplugs that ignite the fuel...almost a high hp Diesel. So appropriate for Europe. Nobody will drive one in the USA unless primarily for ✈️
