I thought the game awards was supposed to present video games as a legitimate medium, equivalent to movies. And yet they showed way more respect to movie celebrities than people of the game industry when it was supposed to be their moment. Not even a word about how terrible this year has been for the industry. Treating game devs like an inconvenience. This was downright insulting.

Games already make more money and have a bigger audience than movies. But singular movies still have more cultural impact. Gaming figures often get stuck with labels due console wars.
Regardless, it truly feels pathetic that these old dudes in charge wanna be accepted by movie stars. Be it the ones running or the ones hosting the show, they want to use and acknowledged by big celebrities.
These people are not promoting gaming, they are treating gaming as a subservient art form and entertainment industry. I would pity them, if they didn't actively kick down on actually passionate developers. I just despise the sort to use the hardwork of developers to gather ads and some slight praise from celebrities.

I would agree, however, with casting choices for Mario (and similar media) comprised of dedicated voice actors and not movie actors.

@@PsypherWolf Thats not an argument, first of all some countries dubbed it with Charles voice as inspiration and nobody was annoyed. Secondly you can always tell him to tone it down a bit, good VAs are aware that things that work for games not necessarily work for animation.
Pratt took me out of the movie, most of the cast seemed to have passion for the characters they voice and somewhat kept the spirit of rhe characters...only the most important one came in with a bland voice.
Thirdly if people can handle something like a spobgebob voice for 90 minutes I dont get why it would be a big problem for Mario.
Seeing Todd sitting there absolutely S.E.E.T.H.I.N.G was the highlight of the show. You can tell he really believes he made an 11/10 game with Starfield. Its a rock solid 6/10 game.

If memory serves, of the 48 minutes dedicated to the Game awards, only around 10 minutes were actual award speeches.
And the fact that they turned on the "Please Wrap it Up" sign *while* someone was talking about someone who DIED, that tells you everything you need to know. Especially when the "Please Wrap it Up" sign was ONLY EVER turned on during the acceptance speeches.
The wrap it up shows because only at the acceptance speeches people dont stick to the script.
The awards aint kidding about time, they even made the Holywood apologize for last year's mishap, thats how serious they are.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was Judge who made Geoff go, "well damn, that was a long @$$ speech you just gave us. Next year, let's not have that. This is a new game trailer showcase first and foremost, giving an award to someone is just the side piece". Like I said, I could be wrong so correct me with that one. It's long enough as it is with all the trailers and other stuff i missed, but yeah. Much love and respect.

Best part about Game Awards was when Larian won the GOTY and Swen was talking about the employees that dying during covid while the prompter showed "Please, wrap it up", truly one of the momments of all time

Something that is worth to point is that it's VERY clear/apparent that The Game Awards is very, VERY ashamed of being a gamer award. Instead of being a celebration of videogames, it's trying really hard to appease to everyone, inviting hollywood celebrities that have NOTHING to do with gaming.
Timothee, Simu, Anthony and Matthew were really out of place, specially Simu/Anthony who apparently are way more important than Larian because they were allowed to do whatever they wanted to and they took all the time to do their cringy bits (which besides of being cringy it's was really bad. They were trying REALLY hard to create a Keanu moment and now, no matter what, they are gonna be known as the cringy pointy scream dude and the cringy "backstory" broken feet dude).

The nepotism is always something that doesn't seem real until you experience it. A local brewery had a contest for local artists to design labels for a can, and I made a submission. Out of curiosity, I scrolled through the social media post to see who else might be entering. I found out that the contest got city funding after it was announced, and so a city councilor was made a judge, who was very openly close friends with one of the contestants. I don't think I need to tell you who ended up winning.
It's a small thing, but it is disheartening to piece it together before a winner is even announced and realize "oh, I wasted my time, didn't I?"
worst part for me appart from the ads was the guy who talked having lot of time for cringe show with a muppet, but when the GOTY get announced they don't even have enough time to thanks someone who died and were told to "wrap it up" during that :/
The funniest thing to me is that this is just breaking news to some people. The Game Awards was _always_ about ads first.

I get tired of either being a larger portion. The trailers blended together this time I couldn't differentiate between most.
I usually like to watch awards shows to see if I missed out on a game, watch some clips during nomination, get some idea about it.
This year felt particularly bad, mainly due to most award winners having less time to do their speeches than the celebrity announcing the award.
Gotta love how even the GOTY winners didn't get more time. Like... the medley was longer than the acceptance. _Unacceptable._
the truth is, nobody cares about games as art, or their creator, so everyone is there for the trailers, if you want to watch the awards that celebrates the creators, go watch DICE awards in february, but they have like 50k views when TGA has millions, bc nobody cares about a bunch of socially ankward people talking on the stage.

Last year they had Christopher Judge just sit on stage for 8 minutes. This year they made a 180 and rushed people off the stage after 30 seconds. They were overcompensating and in the context of how many adds where shown at the awards compared to the awards being handed out and talked about, it really left a foul taste in people's mouths.

I can understand the commercial breaks. I hate them, but I get it. You get money off of them and they are often related to videogames and gamers.
What makes me angry is the obsession with importing Hollywood prestige by wasting money on star power. It's a sad reminder of the inferiority complex many people in gaming have (even though the industry makes more money than Hollywood).
This, 100%. I felt like this as well with Cyberpunk 2077 for example. First Keanu Reeves, then Idris Elba.
At least Keanu and Idris were impactful and directly participated in the acting of the game.

I thought people were mostly excited when Keanu Reeves enter the stage last time. And there were Hollywood stars on stage almost every year for past years' events.
The game industry is very large now, yes. It is said larger than Movies and other entertainment combined
but most of the game revenue, comes from mobile games, microtransections... which are what people hate
My favorite part about the Game Awards is when they rushed all these award winners but dedicated a solid 10-15 minutes to Kojima's mess that is written solely with the idea that its more then you can comprehend, your little minds can't handle this level of storytelling. It was cool with MGS, but now its just being overly complex and vague for the sake of it, and not because its actually a good story. 15 minutes to hype up something that isn't even ready for public because its Kojima.

Someone did the math and out of the nearly 3 hour show, less than 12 minutes was dedicated to the award speeches. The people presenting the awards got more time to speak than the people accepting them.

I have never seen The Game Awards before, but after knowing BG3 won a lot I tuned in to clips to see them win, and wanted to see Neil's speech too. Both clip watches were incredibly confusing. I didn't understand why the hell the speeches were so short, why music started pumping as Neil expressed that "we were seen". So this made me watch some of the rest of it, and... Holy shit, that is a farce. It's a travesty. The Oscars, for their many shitty faults, don't do this; there's enough filler, and a lot of awards have been cut the recent years, but also delegated time to the speeches in question.
Yeah they don't know why we watch it, it's for the nominees, winners, and Orchestra lol 😂
It’s really a shame, because there have been some really great years for the game awards. 2022’s was one of my favorites of all time. This year… this year was rough.
It's because last year someone took 8 minutes for their speech. They timeslotted the speeches this year to prevent it from happening and they overcorrected. I'm sure next year it will be ~1 minute. It's shitty what happened, but they have a show to run. Similarly there are a shit ton of game announcements instead of just awards, because realistically they would have no viewers if they just did the awards.

Imagine if award ceremonies like the Oscars did something similar and only gave the actors less than 30 seconds to do their acceptance speech but spent the rest of the time on movie trailers and adverts.
More people would watch..believe it or not..the Oscars has had less and less people every year for like 20 years now..WHY they take too long and there not enough "Excitement" for the under 40 crowd.

I was shocked when most of the awards weren't even properly presented. It was just Geoff naming the nominees and announcing the winner shortly after without any buildup or anything.
I’ll be honest, I’m genuinely pissed that the developers behind Sea of Stars didn’t get to talk about winning best indie, yet Kojima got to spend 10 minutes essentially bragging about all the new Hollywood buddies he’s got in whatever the hell his next project is.
Honestly, I also don't understand why they gave a "best debut indie" some time on stage while an actual "best indie" didn't get any. Wtf? Are Cocoon devs like friends of Keighley?
Josh perfectly understands what a "Game Of The Year" should be. All the people mad that Spider-Man 2 or Tears of the Kingdom didn't win fundamentally misunderstand that a game that is basically just a prettier version of the last game in the series should not win GOTY because it didn't fundamentally alter the gaming landscape by existing. It was just a solid sequel.
BG3 won GOTY because it not only was the best made game of the year, but it also introduced a LOT of people to a genre of games that are normally very hard to get into AND set a new standard for what quality we should expect from an AAA game(playing Starfield after my first play-through of BG3 really showed how inferior that game really was, in all ways).
But BG3 didnt change anything from any other larians game.....with your metrics they should have lost also lololololol😅 since it was just a "prettier" version of the old stuff
BG3 is AAA game. Larian Studios is AA/AAA quality (around 450 employees) and they used the Early Access to polish BG3 bringing it from AA to AAA quality. It wouldnt surprise me if BG3 had more people involved than Starfield. That said BG3 vs Starfield, they are different games. Starfield should be compared with other Open-World Exploration RPGs like Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc as it is very different than BG3. Just like BG3 should be compared with other CRPGs. However Starfield isnt that great in its respective sub-genre.
For my part i think Divinity Original Sin is better crafted than BG3. However the superior 5 edition D&D system elevates BG3. The system has less optionsfor spell/effects-combining, but far better balance than Divinity's system, even if 5 edition is not that great). In the end BG3 won because of the romance options & scenes that are great for streamer material (plus many people long for those Bioware loosely inspired games, after all even a porn studio wanted to get on the Bioware-related sex scenes bandwagon a couple of years ago. This even reached the mainstream news, thats how i learned about it). IMO Solasta does a few things better than BG3 on the gameplay mechanics.

@@derigel7662The only CRPG that came close to inspiring as many people as BG3 in the last 5 years, longer even, was Disco Elysium, and even that didn’t hit as big an audience as BG3. For the vast majority of the gaming audience, BG3 IS new and innovative game design, and we should be celebrating such an effort for putting that in people’s minds. As great games as they are, Spider-Man 2 and Tears of the Kingdom are nowhere near as fresh, SM2 literally started as a DLC and ToTK was rumoured to be too, and it shows. (And for the record I thought it was ridiculous a DLC, Cyberpunk’s in this case, was up for any awards, except MAYBE ongoing game but even that was a stretch).
The Game Awards are a purely commercial show masquerading as an awards show. It’s always been that away, and that’s the way the creators will always run it. It’s designed to make money.
You need a industry wide representative body with due-paying members in order to fund an awards show that treats the awards as the actual important bit.
Imagine if at the Oscars or something, most of it was trailers for movies that may never even come out.
I like learning about new games that are on the horizon, but a show called "The Game Awards" just isn't the right place for that. Especially if it means the speakers only get like 10 seconds before they are escorted off stage.
It felt so odd watching it happen because we were like " what's going on? why are they all in such a hurry? Is there another event they have to get to?"

I might just be reading too much into it but it felt ironic to me, with how monetized the industry has become in general that they should interrupt a heartfelt speech to monetize was tragically accurate.
You talk about how they "could have gotten someone involved in games to present an award" and I'm reminded they brought Matthew Mercer on stage for 10s to say "please watch this trailer for a metaquest exclusive game"
The expectation of the game awards has changed. People now tune in expecting an E3-isk convention. That is what pays. If people and media didn't solely focus on all of the "new releases", "celebrity cameos", and occasionally "on stage fails" we wouldn't have seen the game awards devolve to such a level.
I was expecting a giant hook to be used to drag people off of the stage like you used to see in cartoons.
Best part was Anthony Mackie thinking he is way more popular than he is, taking 5 minutes only to tell the actual developers to shut up and then for them to only have 30 seconds to say anything about it...

Every conference I have had to go to, every "golf event", every award show has been nothing but a giant circle jerking networking event. Nobody even remembers the awards or who won them, it's more about the open bar afterword's.

My favorite part was, when they talked about best sports games and racing games and so on and they just ran through the list in 10 seconds who won and nobody was called up to the stage to take the award.
that was like 90% of all the awards, just list them off hurriedly after some celebrity wankfest on stage before cutting to more ads

- Neil being cut off not even half a minute into his heartfelt thanks
- Giving minutes for a muppet instead
- Pushing various ads about Fortnite or Honkai: Star Rail
- Giving debut Indie to Cocoon instead of Pizza Tower (10 times as many positive reviews as Cocoon - But Annapurna (from the cute cat game, yay!) published Cocoon!)
- Nominating Dave the Diver for Indie of the Year (not even Indie)
- Alan Wake getting a lot of attention, but the devs aren't allowed to talk
- 30% of the Award show actually being about awards

The celebrity obsession in gaming now is so frustrating. Megan Fox on everything even though she's not a gamer and doesn't actually have anything to do with the industry other than being shoehorned into MK11 even though she sucks at voice acting. Pokemon can't make a game that runs but they'll break the bank to have Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran sing while Pikachu stutters and falls through the world. Or these award shows with a bunch of celebrities stealing the spotlight from the people that actually made the games they're supposed to be celebrating. It's so dumb and frustrating how corporate gaming has become. Like it's very clear that at all levels now, so many of the people in charge in the game industry don't actually know anything about, or don't actually like videogames.
The awards themselves are basically meaningless, it really is all rigged, the draw really is just celebrating games period, not the awards themselves and def no celebs.
Next year they should have a 2 hour preshow where they have all the game reveals and ads, then an hour long main show where they give out all the awards. That way we can all switch it off once the main show starts.

Geoff Keighly's Gaming Fun Times is a blight upon gaming.
Larian should have received at least 5 minutes for their acceptance speech. Same goes for any other dev who received a big award, like best RPG and best action/adventure game. It's insulting what it's become. Larian deserved better. They are so passionate about the games they make and a force for good in the industry. Imagine getting cut off while you're trying to honor a fellow colleague who passed away and didn't make it to that moment. It's shameful. The game awards should be boycotted if they continue this kind of behavior.

The problem isn't that there's ads or trailers, the problem is that it is a vast majority of what was presented.
The Game Awards has always been an embarrassment. Glad that fact has caught up to some people with the recent rudeness on display on stage with the winners.
The biggest joke about VGA is that Geoff keeps inviting Hollywood actors and acting like it's a big thing. Look, kids, adults came to see us, they think we're big boys now!
I had Josh's opinion on this until yesterday, when I listened to the newest episode of the Windbreaker podcast (that's the podcast Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation and the rest of the Escapist video crew are now running). Marty Sliva made the point that the awards show Josh wants - where it's about the devs, not the ads, where thr awards are more sensible, where there's no random Hollywood celebrities - and that I want already exists. It's called the DICE awards and the GDC awards, and no one - myself and I suspect Josh included - watches them. They're simply not what people want to watch. The Game Awards are the big gaming awards show entirely because we allow them to be. If we want that less corporate, lower-key awards show, it's on us to give it eyes and attention.

It was the moment of Neil Newbon’s life - one of the greatest gaming performances of all time - and they played him off the stage after 1 minute.
Although, for my money, Tim Downie doesn’t get enough credit for Gale. It was necessarily a more understated performance but he perfectly captures in his tone a one gregarious and narcissistic man who has thrown his life away and is now surviving, not living.
To be fair, the fact that he INSTANTLY launched into divisive shit like he did didn't help.
Not that I think he should've been played off. The man earned his time, let him talk about whatever he wants.

I don't even refer to it as "The Game Awards" in my mind anymore, it's "The Geoff Keighley Show". They'll try to course correct, I'm sure, but as far as I'm concerned the damage is done. The TGA award has lost all semblance of importance. I look more to things like publication top 10s, the BAFTA, the games category in literature awards, and ofc the critics I personally care for.
When I was 12, I realized the Academy awards has 0 intersection with any movie I really liked. So. I instantly lost interest in them. Decades later I was friends with a member of the Directors Guild, a voting member of the Academy. He told me that the winners were the ones that had the most corporate investment in academy award parties before the voting. The Academy Awards can guarantee a re-releasing in theatres, a second kick at the cat of making box office money. A significant portion of almost every country spend to attend movies in theatres. It adds up.
The awards were originally there for self promotion by the Academy. They’ve turned into a monetary juggernaut.
Every single person involved with games thinks this same thing, unfortunatly once this kind of things begins they will see how much money they brought in and it will only get worse from here on out. I'd like to say all the developers should just stop going, but they have already proven they are perfectly willing to just mention the awards and not care about anything else.

I absolutely hated the game awards. It's baffling to me that a show called "The Game Awards" was barely about games and gamers.
I found it very insulting that Larian games were given 2 chances to talk on stage, we could have easily put on another trailer related to Fortnite, or at the very least another indie game that we were going to forget in 5 days. Disappointed. 1/10. IGN game awards are better.

I actually would not mind, and would actually like, an event like an E3 or a Game Awards where new games and trailers are all announced and show cased - like Nintendo Directs but for everyone who wants to be there. But it probably shouldn't be during the Game Awards. Maybe make it a 2 night event, one specifically for Game Awards where the people who make games get to be recognized and the God of War guy can make a 15 minute long speech if he wants to, and then one that is for Muppets and Kojima to do their thing. I never would have personally sought out Kojimas OD chat with Jeff but if it's part of a 2-3 hour event that I can put on in the background and peek at when I hear something cool, thats fine. But not if it means award winners need to "wrap it up".

That's the way things go. I remember fondly Animecon in California in the early 90's. Lots of dealers selling Japanese laserdiscs, cells, mouse pads, toys, figurines, posters, etc from Japan. Things that were difficult or impossible or expensive to obtain online. Watching fan subtitled anime. Then, a few years later, just American companies selling commercially subtitled or badly dubbed anime. The dealers selling unique items were crowded out, fan led activities were pushed aside and it just became a con where you could buy American tapes/dvds available online. Stopped going. The con lost its soul.
Worst part was there wasn't a single game I'm exciting for this year from the 2 Hours and 15 minutes of ads for them....
I mean, the game awards has become to games, what super bowl is to american football. Think Epic spent more on ads showing Fortnite Lego, than all the devs attending the ceremony did on their games, combined. Next year we can expect mercedes ads, running during the "best racing game" awards, featuring games that dont have a single mercedes.

There is literally no reason to be invested in them as a consumer. They mean nothing, the viewership is very low and they don’t seem to be impacting sales all that much.

Funny that you mention you thought Fallout New Vegas was DLC. It actually started out as a DLC to Fallout 3 but the scope of the game became so large that it was decided during development that it would be a standalone game.
At this point game companies should just make exclusive parties to celebrate their success with the community

I want to mention this just because 4:10 that both fallout new vegas and cowboy bebop are two really great games/shows that are somehow famous for people telling others to play/watch it, and it falls flat and they don’t follow through. I myself have not played or watched either of them beyond the smallest amount of time invested and just gave up on them. I wanted to point that out cause I only just thought about it.
I hate the game awards too. I want development teams to know their work is recognized, but the game awards seem to be about anything but that. It's all a massive advertisement and a way to farm hype around games as products as instead of experiences.
Games are meant to be enjoyed, not to be idolized.
You're right about the celebrities and that all the promotion was excessive, but at the same time, I'm sure there were plenty of people who couldn't care any less about the awards themselves or whoever made the games. Rather, they were there exclusively for the trailers because, I dunno, maybe they didn't play any of the games that were nominated. Maybe they don't have the time and energy to care, even if they did play some of the games. Hard to say if those people represent the majority or the minority, though.
I don't care for awards shows, I was there solely for MH trailer possibility. However, something like The Game Awards shouldn't be basically E3 with quick awards breaks.
For anyone who just wants reveals just watch watch the trailers on the next day, you get to skip the awards and the other stupid skits, ads, and cameos

I don't really get that tbh. I mean, that would have made sense 20-30 years ago. When you actually HAD to watch it on TV, otherwise there was no way to see the trailer. But nowadays? The trailer is uploaded either directly after it's been shown on the show or directly after the show ended. So that's AT most like 2-3 hours later. But you don't waste 2-3 hours watching a bad show.

The Americans seem to be extremely good at turning a 1hr, fun event into a 4hr boring, advert fest.
The fact I was expected to sit through 3hrs of ad's to watch a Monster Hunter trailer (which is also an advert) was too much to bear. So I went to bed. The death of E3 really shows us the priorities of the modern gaming industry.
