The Senior race isn't age related. It's the most powerful bikes. I thought is was older guys but kept seeing people who either looked extremely good for their age or I had it wrong. You two are fun!

The thing that terrifies me about that race is the fact that there are basically no proper racing track style run off areas. You are either into a wall, into someone’s front garden or into a ditch…

And then there is the story of the Guy that parted company with the Bike . Bike ended up in a Pub Carpark and the Rider , an Irishman , ended up sliding in through the Front Door of said Pub , coming to a halt just in front of the Bar . Stood up , looked around and then Ordered a Guiness .
Needless to say , Hilarity ensued .

That is a serious race. We have a go man, Guy Martin, who used to race it, and he has smashed every bone in his body. He said that it is a real challenge to race it because no 2 laps are the same. Great reaction.

I used to race professional UCI World Cup downhill mountain biking for about 15 years, retired in 2010. We would race down mountains all over the world, as fast as we possibly could, on a bicycle, and you are NEVER fast enough. You got used to going through corners like these and trusting your suspension settings for the g out at the bottom, and your mechanics for setting it up how you like it, but we were going maybe 30-40 mph max in the open sections and 5-20mph in the rock gardens, speeds like that.
That being said, there is absolutely no way that I would do these speeds!!! I would trust myself and get used to it to a degree, but not to these life gambits anymore, and I do not possess that skillset that these riders have in the least. Just mind blowing every, single time I watch it.

I'm a fell runner (it's a UK version of mountain running where we go up and down steep and technical mountain trails) so quite often find myself passing (on the ascents) or being passed (on the descents) by mtb riders, coming down when you get one going full pelt it's pretty terrifying, especially when you can hear then coming before you can se them when there's zero visibility! It's always fun though and lots of banter, especially when running past them on the uphill.

The Isle of Man TT is something special. First recorded race is 1907. One of the best documentaries to explain it is "Closer to the Edge" filmed over the 2010 TT and introduces some of the biggest names - and a couple of horrific crashes. Hairpin bends to speeds well over 200mph. The 37.73 mile lap record currently stands at 136.358mph AVERAGE speed by Peter Hickman in 2023. Currently stands at 258 recorded deaths of competitors - but spectators and "mad Sunday" bike riders have died plenty of times.

  • @Uvray

Imagine hitting 218mph on a bike. Terrifying. These riders are nutcases. But it is an utterly thrilling event, no two ways about it.

Fastest I've ever gone on two wheels was 137mph and that was only in a straight line, that was faster than I was comfortable with.

Senior in UK sports means the very best elite at their peak racers, so that's the main race, I used to be a track athlete and they use the term senior too for their main races, I still race xc for fun in the winter as a Vet50+ and there's 8 races during a full day's racing covering all ages and abilities, but the main race of the day with all the best at their peak racers is the senior race in the mid afternoon.

"You'd have to have been racing for a long time, before you try that.". And, quite often, not even then. The famous Valentino Rossi ducked out. And, of course, absolutely the greatest possible respect to him for doing so and for all his amazing accomplishments, and equal respect to those who do choose to race in the IoM TT and similar events.
Losing one's life round this circuit (not even in a race, necessarily) is alarmingly likely, and one is never in full control (e.g. someone else's bike may have dropped oil). The organisers at least know for sure that the participants understand the dangers, and the limits on the safety measures should one lose control, fall off, etc.

Them old houses are 2ft thick stone walls so they ain't moving anywhere if you hit one, even if you hit one at that speed you would probably only have to do a bit of pointing up to fix the wall but you and the bike would just disintegrate.

The human beings who enter the Isle of Mann TT are engaged in a psychological battle. The biking skills required are beyond the highest humanly possible, but what separates these riders, is the mental strength to participate in an activity where instant death can occur at any moment, in a race where, not by any stretch of the imagination, are the variables that decide life or death under your control. If people played Russian roulette with live rounds, you would always get crowds who would come to watch, and in some ways this is a bit like that, but I suppose the immense skill involved, puts it into a proper sporting groove, but still you have to question, if nobody came to watch/no video/TV coverage, would all thees riders still do it?

  • @22seanmurphy

You wouldn't want to be working night's, the do have officials who literally walk the track several times to make sure that every little stone or pebble is removed and over the years several spectators have been killed as well as the bikers, bless them all.

They may have motorcycle racing in Canada, well to be honest most countries have some form of motor sport, but this right here? This is unique, there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. If memory serves, the amount of people who have died in this race over the years works out to 3 per year on average. It really is no holds bard when it comes to the rules on speed and safety, ultimately they give you free reign so its up to you how much you wanna risk on the day. Same goes for the spectators, you know the risks when you go :)
