I’m into most sports .. football .. rugby ..f1 ... track and field .. tennis you name it ... but these guys that do the tt at Isle of Man are on another level ... they are by far the bravest motor sport individuals there is on this planet .. they know if they make a mistake there basically done for .. and through little villages .. the amount of respect I have for these ppl is as high as it gets .. nerves of steel

Peter Hickman has a lap record, One lap is 37 3/4 miles long. His time for a lap is 16min 42sec. Average of 135 1/2 miles an hour. The senior race is 6 laps. These guy are moving.
When I went over in 2007 for the first time I broke the ton in a little four banger rental car on the mountain part of the course, just to be able to say I'd broken the ton on the IOM TT course. Had all four tires screaming in some of the curves in order to get it done. The guy riding with me dropped the camera he was holding and planted his feet so hard into the floorboards he threw his back out. The course is almost nothing but curves. They have drag races in Ramsey during the TT fortnight and even the drag strip has a little kink in it. The island is 35 miles north to south and 13.5 miles wide at it widest point. It's a giant frigging rock sticking out of the Irish Sea. It's drop dead beautiful, but there ain't anything on the island flat, straight or soft. The people are great!
@@mrmaje1 there is no speed limit on the mountain portion of the course and during the fortnite of the TT it is limited to one way traffic. It's what people do during the TT. I had bikes passing me like I was standing still. What is tragic is your lack of research on something you know nothing about before making a negative comment.
Thank you. I was going to ask that question. I saw that he was second fastest that year. That didn't seem like a nearly winning lap. He didn't seem to be pushing it.
@@timhilton7254 He came 2nd in the Senior TT race in this year but won in 2018 and set the all time lap record at 135.5 mph average speed. He won both Senior TT (most prestigious race on TT) and Superstock races in 2018 and won Superstock race again in 2019. Both these races were on a superbike (1,000 cc pushing well.over 200 hp) You want to see his 2018 record setting lap as he narrates it. He rode a Smiths Racing BMW S1000 RR.
Ive seen this video... its insane, firstly your controlling your own bike and then you have to split focus on the guy in front or behind, waiting for the opportunity to pass safely... if you could even call it safely on a road course at high speed...
Absolute legend Joey was the ultimate king of the island . R.I.P . His nephews Micheal and Robert Dunlop weren’t to shabby either . Check out the Northwest 200 road racing if you like the Isle of Man you’ll like that
These guys go so quick the helicopter filming the race can't keep up. As somebody who has riden the route I can tell you the amazing thing is how these guys learn the course, learning a short track is one thing but learning a 40 mile course in depth is another
If you only make one pilgrimage in your life just make sure you go to watch the TT. It is a truly unforgettable experience and a truly humbling one. The island hospitality is second to none and the event itself is definitely the most amazing thing you will ever witness.
Isle of Man should do a lot more to increase safety. Air barriers should be purchased or rented to isolate all the troblesome corners and areas. It will never be 100% safe but many could be saved with protection. IOT should also mandate for riders to wear air- vests to protect torso and key organs in case of crash.
@@tropickman I agree, that would make it safer for riders. On the other hand, part of the appeal of IOMTT has always been the level of danger for riders, and the appreciation of the skill in successfully negotiating the course. Deaths are a reality of the event and are taken into account by the riders, their families and the fans.

I had a college tutor that was a TT privateer and he crashed out at the bridge. Broke his pelvis, legs, arm, sternum, ribs, and back. Lucky to be alive. He’ll never sit on a bike again but when you ask him, he says he would do it all again in a heartbeat. Different breed these guys.
my dad raced in the british superbikes which was bikes faster then the tt but for tracks only and he told me to never consider something like the TT as even he was terrified to do something like that
When on a normal day cars park on side of the road and you have to wait for one car to pass so you can get thru... Road is only 2 cars wide... Love the Isle of man...
One year, on Mad Sunday - in those days, the course from Ramsey to Creg was one way traffic on the first Sunday of race week, despite the roads being open, so visitors could ride the mountain more safely. - we were climbing from the Gooseneck and a police van was in front of us, lights flashing, travelling at over eighty mph on his way to an 'incident'. The driver slid the sliding driver's door open, leaned out, and waved the queue of following bikes past so as not to hold them up or cause a tailback (there's no speed limit on the open roads on the mountain). As I accelerated up to around 105 or so (on a 900 BMW) I was passed as if I was standing still by a German plated bike who must have been doing 130 plus. It's a bizarre feeling.
Yeah, this is the only "real" place things are all on the razor's edge I believe. There is no coming back from a "small" misstep. One slip, or slightly slow thought, and you're in someone's living room making it look like a bomb scene. Those people are the top of the top.

You win the TT your an instant Legend........ win it as many times as Joey Dunlop and in as many different classes raises you into GOD levels among bikers (there is a statue of Joey on the TT). BTW Joey Dunlop was 48 years old the last TT he won in 2000........
The guys who ride in the IOM TT are beyond brave, they know that more than any normal race circuit that riding in the TT could cost them their life, they are extraordinary guys.

It seems it doesn't matter what you're riding or which mountain you're playing on… people will take calculated risks.
For all the violence of the rider being bounced around and being hit by 190 - 200 mph wind in the head it's amazing how gentle and precise Hicky is on the controls. Finesse.
My brother did the TT a couple of times and had a racing career back in the late 80's. My driving instructor was his good friend and went over to watch him. During one driving lesson a few years later I sat behind another pupil. She made a bit of a botched manouver and my instructor panicked a little. 'Were you terrified'? She asked. ' When you've been around the TT track, flat-out on the back of his brother's racing bike (thumbed to me in the back seat)... Then you'll know what 'terrifying' REALLY is"!
I would recommend some of ex TT competitor (and multiple world record holder) Guy Martin's programmes. He's a truck mechanic by trade, and has done many programmes combining his love and his livelihood.
I've seen this vid so many times, with so many cam angles it's great to be able to see the subtle inputs of brake/throttle etc, this is a true master at work!
It's truly crazy. And you're not even alone on the track. You could actually have someone else catch up to you and overtake you. At 180 mph..!! You were right, these guys truly have balls of steel..
@@TheEclecticBeard Peter Hickman is a very rare breed. He's one the of the very few pro racers that takes part in top level road and circuit racing. He represents Smiths racing in BSB and also road racing which is unheard of nowadays. Initially I thought he might be on a stock gixxer (it's not a race lap.. its a mid-week test lap) but it has an upside down racing gearbox.. i.e. down to shift up. Isle of Mann has also been running an electric category for 3 or 4 years. Bizarrely there is no shortage of top level pros willing to ride them. The TT electric race, compared to combustion based motorbikes does flag up the instant problem. I think the electric bikes only do 1 lap (30 miles?) .. the bikes do 5.. but the petrol/gas bikes do have to refill.. but the electric bikes can't easily do that.. even so.. the electric bikes aren't far off in terms off acceleration or top speed.. agility (being about 50 - 60 kg heavier) and braking are the main problems. If the braking energy on a motorbike front wheel could be harnassed then you might have quite an efficient vehicle.

@@bdnn3374 it’s a BMW S1000rr and it’s not an upside down gearbox it’s just a reverse set gearshift pattern by changing the pivot on the lever assembly which is quite common on track and race bikes 🤓
I once spent most of 30 minutes on my bike on the autobahns in Germany at top speed... 160 mph... when I slowed down it seems as if the world has slowed down. It's a wierd feeling. When i looked at the speedo and saw 100 mph I was sure i could get off and walk. It's a mental thing.
An old guy I used to know was a Manxman and was a race marshal at the IOM in the early fifties. Geoff Duke was his hero and he watched Duke round a bend somewhere on the course where he was stationed . He placed a penny on the road where Dukes tyre had gone and on the next lap he ran over the penny again, showing the absolute accuracy of the man. That on a track of 37.7 miles long. Geoff last won in 1955
Joey Dunlop, most successful rider in TT history, described the mountain section (the fastest bit, in the middle) as "There's a grey blur, and a green blur, and you just try and keep on the grey blur".
These guys are supremely brave, they know the circuit like the back of their hand, they need to or else they won’t make it around the circuit, truly the top circuit for road racing IMO 👌
You're right about them going /really/ close to the sidelines. There's footage on TH-cam of a rider accidentally knocking his helmet-cam off on a stone wall - didn't interrupt his ride, but definitely shows just how tight the margins are...
The best thing about the Isle Of Man is, there are only speed limits in the villages. On the mountain roads you're unrestricted, you can drive/ride like that to fetch groceries!
I lived in the Isle of Man for a long time, went to watch the Race once at Bray Hill, the speed of the 1st bike that went past, scared the life out of me, i had to go away, and never went to see it again. They are some brave guys.
These guys usually know the TT course off by heart, learning each corner over the yrs they compete... nearly 38 miles for a lap at an average speed of 135mph (course record) it’s impressive stuff and I love watching every year it’s on... the last full bloodied race where there’s a high chance of mortality every time they jump on the Bike. These guys risk everything and that’s where they get the respect.
You're right about insanity. My uncle spent a few years as a Radiologist at the Isle of Man hospital and he dreaded the TT. Said he'd never seen injuries like it in a long career. As well as the races they have open days when anyone can use the circuit, and they are carnage too. I've spent my life involved with dangerous sports, but this is on another level.
Here's how cool the TT is. The spectators that get close to the track have more courage than the participants of almost all other sports. It is truly the greatest sporting even on earth.
This happens in many countries over the world. Its isn't just in the UK. Its also a multi national race. Thats like saying Formula 1 is a British sport because most of the teams have a base in the UK.
In fact, the Isle of Man isn't part of the United Kingdom… It's an independent, self governing crown dependency. It doesn't have a 'king' (or queen) as such, though our monarch (Queen Elizabeth II) is 'Lord of Mann' (not queen) in the same way she's 'Duke of Normandy' to the Channel Islands.
I've been lucky enough to ride the TT Circuit, I was at speeds of 120mph MAXIMUM and averaging 80, and it was the most terrifying ,exhilarating and most memorable days of my life, to be able to do the speed these guys do is something to behold, they are cornering at 160 mph and straight line speeds of 200 mph , to witness it with your own eyes is like watching actual magic , you can't comprehend how fast it is , I have no clue how they are able to do what they do.
The most amazing thing about this race to me is how those guys can sustain such a level of concentration and adrenaline for that long. I know it's years and years of training, taking it through the classes, but still. I guess one consolation is that if it goes wrong, it's a quick death.
My Dad took my Mum to the Isle of Man for their honeymoon. One morning my Mum woke up and said she can hear motorbikes and said to my Dad did you purposely book it at this time of year just so you can watch the TT? My Dad just said well yes lol.

Best TT reaction i have watched thanks. They also deal with constantly changing road conditions. Shady wet to dry and bright. Rapid changes in light, from blinding light to darkness. Then the road camber humps n bumps. As motor sport goes i cannot think of one that trumps it.
The best on board lap of isle of man was Joey Dunlop,and he's talking you through his lap,at one point he's got the throttle pinned riding under trees,it's pretty dark and shaded and he says it get's pretty slippy through here with damp leaves on the track,meanwhile the bikes violently shaking flat out!!!They're a different breed those guys,hats off to them!

I'd actually be looking this up for the specs to read out as watching it and giving my thoughts on it. It's interesting the vehicles that have been either converted to an ev using advanced engineering and those converted to an ev using engineering and Tesla battery systems.
True story from the late 80s: A rider new to the island was on a top team and was out learning the track. I think I know who it was bit don't want to upset people on case I'm wrong... He can back to the garage with gouges and scratches on his helmet and they asked if he'd crashed.... He said no, but he used a hedge as an apex marker and just brushed it with his head.... He didn't know the track. Turns out is was a drystone wall. The Island is beyond belief... And there are races elsewhere too. Southern 100 and many others. Just beyond belief.
Theres a video shot from a heli and it cant keep up over the mountain. Bike pulls away heli takes a short cut using the zoom on camera to keep it in shot
That young man know that road like the back of his hand..to slow down shift to to rise up speed to leaning in curves right to left..Very skilled diver riding since a young age.
I really do have so much respect for guys who push themselves to probably what is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. Tearing around a purpose-built circuit is one thing but road or street racing is so much more demanding. If I were to stick my neck out, these people have an instinctive death wish and yet when they race so very close to the edge, it’s an extraordinary thing to see!
It's crazy dangerous. My brothers old best friend died here on a practice lap in 2003. He was a multiple winner in the top classes and held the outright lap record the previous year.

PMFSL! Yep, British road racing on the IoM - when the flag drops, the BS stops as you guys say over there. The course is miles long so there’s lots to keep you busy... and a lot of it is done on one wheel not two! These are normal country roads over here; quite narrow with many undulations in the tarmac. The buildings built right on the edge of the road, dry stone walls and raised curbs aren’t renowned for being too forgiving to 200 mph bikes and their riders either - using The Force helps. Got to respect these guys who race it on the day.
Those walls look like old drystone walls too. I haven't been to the Isle of man but if they're made from a hard stone like granite, you hit that at those speeds and you're not just dead, you're soup.
They are dry stone walls. I forget which rider had retired, but he had started commentating on the race. In his first year off he went on a course trip in a van. He was then speechless, for the last 3 years he had been brushing his helmet on a bush to get perfect line. When he stopped in the van he realized the was brushing his head against stone.
I went camping on the IOM in the sixties with our scout troop during the TT. Early one morning during their practice laps a rider hit a dry stone wall next to our campsite. He was dead before he hit the ground. You only get one chance in the TT.
Between 1907 and 2019 there have been 151 fatalities during official practices or races on the Snaefell Mountain Course, and 260 total fatalities (this number includes the riders killed during the Manx Grand Prix and Clubman TT race series of the late 1940s/1950s). these country lanes in normal road use are two-way traffic and we drive on the left normally, really nice footage of Peter
Every TT season there were extra sailings laid on and one year I was transferred off my ship onto the MV Ben-My-Chree conventional ferry. They had stanchions that we'd set up on the vehicle deck so instead of a few bikes we could load up to 350 per crossing. Thing is that it takes time to load the bikes, chase the bikers off the vehicle deck and lash the bikes to the stanchions so what they did was have the owner park the bike and get them off the deck. We'd lash them down as we were leaving port. One sailing though another ship(SuperSeact 2 captained by one of the nutter Italian cpts so they really should have seen this coming😂) was coming into Douglas as we were leaving smacking us with their wash... most expensive dominoes ever and cherry on top, the aft deck looked right down into the vehicle deck so most of the bike owners watched. There was lots of screaming 😂 SeaContainers got to learn the hard way that expensive bikes are usually owned by rich people like Doctors and well.... Lawyers. No idea what the final amount was but it was a lot 😂 2003 I FINALLY got time off ship to watch part of the TT btw. It is truly an amazing experience 😉
I never miss this spectacular event..but even watching scares the sh*t out of me, yet I still go to witness these superheroes. They're racing on the public roads around the island with zero run off, 1 mistake you hit the kerbs or the stone walls. Unfortunately racers do die and sometimes multiple deaths happen over the entire event..
I attended the IOM TT races for over 25 years and was a communication martial for 15 of them and believe me, these guys and Gals, (yes the ladies ride also) are the real deal. to stand by the track and watch them go by is awesome. When it does go wrong it tends to be big. The TTcourse is about 37 miles long, all on closed public roads and the big bike races are 6 laps and that takes fitness. The lap record was set by this guy in the video in the time of 16m.42.778secs. an AVERAGE speed of 135.452mph. for the 37.73 miles.
...so the riders in this race are what we call, "Elite racers", most amazing thing I have seen so far....EVER!! To see it in person is on my "bucket list"...

These guys go so quick the helicopter filming the race can't keep up. As somebody who has riden the route I can tell you the amazing thing is how these guys learn the course, learning a short track is one thing but learning a 40 mile course in depth is another
they learn the course 3 years before tey can compete
If you only make one pilgrimage in your life just make sure you go to watch the TT. It is a truly unforgettable experience and a truly humbling one. The island hospitality is second to none and the event itself is definitely the most amazing thing you will ever witness.
Isle of Man should do a lot more to increase safety. Air barriers should be purchased or rented to isolate all the troblesome corners and areas. It will never be 100% safe but many could be saved with protection. IOT should also mandate for riders to wear air- vests to protect torso and key organs in case of crash.

On the other hand, part of the appeal of IOMTT has always been the level of danger for riders, and the appreciation of the skill in successfully negotiating the course. Deaths are a reality of the event and are taken into account by the riders, their families and the fans.

I had a college tutor that was a TT privateer and he crashed out at the bridge. Broke his pelvis, legs, arm, sternum, ribs, and back. Lucky to be alive. He’ll never sit on a bike again but when you ask him, he says he would do it all again in a heartbeat. Different breed these guys.

my dad raced in the british superbikes which was bikes faster then the tt but for tracks only and he told me to never consider something like the TT as even he was terrified to do something like that

One year, on Mad Sunday - in those days, the course from Ramsey to Creg was one way traffic on the first Sunday of race week, despite the roads being open, so visitors could ride the mountain more safely. - we were climbing from the Gooseneck and a police van was in front of us, lights flashing, travelling at over eighty mph on his way to an 'incident'. The driver slid the sliding driver's door open, leaned out, and waved the queue of following bikes past so as not to hold them up or cause a tailback (there's no speed limit on the open roads on the mountain). As I accelerated up to around 105 or so (on a 900 BMW) I was passed as if I was standing still by a German plated bike who must have been doing 130 plus. It's a bizarre feeling.

The guys who ride in the IOM TT are beyond brave, they know that more than any normal race circuit that riding in the TT could cost them their life, they are extraordinary guys.

But if that's calculated on racing miles covered over the long history of the TT (and MGP), the circuit's statistics are no worse than many other long standing tracks. It's only in relatively recent years that short circuits have become 'safe'. As the disclaimers on entries and spectator tickets always state: 'Motor sport is dangerous'. … There's a lot of people die riding horses or rock climbing too. It seems it doesn't matter what you're riding or which mountain you're playing on… people will take calculated risks.
For all the violence of the rider being bounced around and being hit by 190 - 200 mph wind in the head it's amazing how gentle and precise Hicky is on the controls. Finesse.
My brother did the TT a couple of times and had a racing career back in the late 80's. My driving instructor was his good friend and went over to watch him. During one driving lesson a few years later I sat behind another pupil. She made a bit of a botched manouver and my instructor panicked a little.
'Were you terrified'? She asked.
' When you've been around the TT track, flat-out on the back of his brother's racing bike (thumbed to me in the back seat)... Then you'll know what 'terrifying' REALLY is"!

I would recommend some of ex TT competitor (and multiple world record holder) Guy Martin's programmes. He's a truck mechanic by trade, and has done many programmes combining his love and his livelihood.

@@TheEclecticBeard Peter Hickman is a very rare breed. He's one the of the very few pro racers that takes part in top level road and circuit racing. He represents Smiths racing in BSB and also road racing which is unheard of nowadays. Initially I thought he might be on a stock gixxer (it's not a race lap.. its a mid-week test lap) but it has an upside down racing gearbox.. i.e. down to shift up. Isle of Mann has also been running an electric category for 3 or 4 years. Bizarrely there is no shortage of top level pros willing to ride them. The TT electric race, compared to combustion based motorbikes does flag up the instant problem. I think the electric bikes only do 1 lap (30 miles?) .. the bikes do 5.. but the petrol/gas bikes do have to refill.. but the electric bikes can't easily do that.. even so.. the electric bikes aren't far off in terms off acceleration or top speed.. agility (being about 50 - 60 kg heavier) and braking are the main problems. If the braking energy on a motorbike front wheel could be harnassed then you might have quite an efficient vehicle.

@@bdnn3374 it’s a BMW S1000rr and it’s not an upside down gearbox it’s just a reverse set gearshift pattern by changing the pivot on the lever assembly which is quite common on track and race bikes 🤓
I once spent most of 30 minutes on my bike on the autobahns in Germany at top speed... 160 mph... when I slowed down it seems as if the world has slowed down. It's a wierd feeling. When i looked at the speedo and saw 100 mph I was sure i could get off and walk. It's a mental thing.

An old guy I used to know was a Manxman and was a race marshal at the IOM in the early fifties. Geoff Duke was his hero and he watched Duke round a bend somewhere on the course where he was stationed . He placed a penny on the road where Dukes tyre had gone and on the next lap he ran over the penny again, showing the absolute accuracy of the man. That on a track of 37.7 miles long. Geoff last won in 1955

Joey Dunlop, most successful rider in TT history, described the mountain section (the fastest bit, in the middle) as "There's a grey blur, and a green blur, and you just try and keep on the grey blur".
These guys are supremely brave, they know the circuit like the back of their hand, they need to or else they won’t make it around the circuit, truly the top circuit for road racing IMO 👌
You're right about them going /really/ close to the sidelines. There's footage on TH-cam of a rider accidentally knocking his helmet-cam off on a stone wall - didn't interrupt his ride, but definitely shows just how tight the margins are...

The best thing about the Isle Of Man is, there are only speed limits in the villages. On the mountain roads you're unrestricted, you can drive/ride like that to fetch groceries!
I lived in the Isle of Man for a long time, went to watch the Race once at Bray Hill, the speed of the 1st bike that went past, scared the life out of me, i had to go away, and never went to see it again. They are some brave guys.

These guys usually know the TT course off by heart, learning each corner over the yrs they compete... nearly 38 miles for a lap at an average speed of 135mph (course record) it’s impressive stuff and I love watching every year it’s on... the last full bloodied race where there’s a high chance of mortality every time they jump on the Bike. These guys risk everything and that’s where they get the respect.

You're right about insanity. My uncle spent a few years as a Radiologist at the Isle of Man hospital and he dreaded the TT. Said he'd never seen injuries like it in a long career. As well as the races they have open days when anyone can use the circuit, and they are carnage too. I've spent my life involved with dangerous sports, but this is on another level.

Here's how cool the TT is. The spectators that get close to the track have more courage than the participants of almost all other sports. It is truly the greatest sporting even on earth.

In fact, the Isle of Man isn't part of the United Kingdom… It's an independent, self governing crown dependency. It doesn't have a 'king' (or queen) as such, though our monarch (Queen Elizabeth II) is 'Lord of Mann' (not queen) in the same way she's 'Duke of Normandy' to the Channel Islands.
I've been lucky enough to ride the TT
Circuit, I was at speeds of 120mph MAXIMUM and averaging 80, and it was the most terrifying ,exhilarating and most memorable days of my life, to be able to do the speed these guys do is something to behold, they are cornering at 160 mph and straight line speeds of 200 mph , to witness it with your own eyes is like watching actual magic , you can't comprehend how fast it is , I have no clue how they are able to do what they do.

The most amazing thing about this race to me is how those guys can sustain such a level of concentration and adrenaline for that long. I know it's years and years of training, taking it through the classes, but still. I guess one consolation is that if it goes wrong, it's a quick death.

The best on board lap of isle of man was Joey Dunlop,and he's talking you through his lap,at one point he's got the throttle pinned riding under trees,it's pretty dark and shaded and he says it get's pretty slippy through here with damp leaves on the track,meanwhile the bikes violently shaking flat out!!!They're a different breed those guys,hats off to them!

True story from the late 80s: A rider new to the island was on a top team and was out learning the track. I think I know who it was bit don't want to upset people on case I'm wrong... He can back to the garage with gouges and scratches on his helmet and they asked if he'd crashed.... He said no, but he used a hedge as an apex marker and just brushed it with his head.... He didn't know the track. Turns out is was a drystone wall. The Island is beyond belief... And there are races elsewhere too. Southern 100 and many others. Just beyond belief.

Theres a video shot from a heli and it cant keep up over the mountain. Bike pulls away heli takes a short cut using the zoom on camera to keep it in shot

I really do have so much respect for guys who push themselves to probably what is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. Tearing around a purpose-built circuit is one thing but road or street racing is so much more demanding. If I were to stick my neck out, these people have an instinctive death wish and yet when they race so very close to the edge, it’s an extraordinary thing to see!
Been watching the TT's all my life. Absolutely crazy dangerous but also very entertaining when watching a good pilot or driver.
It's crazy dangerous. My brothers old best friend died here on a practice lap in 2003. He was a multiple winner in the top classes and held the outright lap record the previous year.
And even bikes on the road not racing are dangerous, and sports bikes on the road have a specially high causality rate in death and injury.
You must be referring to the late great david jeffries dd....as david was the only rider to die that year and he was the top man...

PMFSL! Yep, British road racing on the IoM - when the flag drops, the BS stops as you guys say over there.
The course is miles long so there’s lots to keep you busy... and a lot of it is done on one wheel not two! These are normal country roads over here; quite narrow with many undulations in the tarmac. The buildings built right on the edge of the road, dry stone walls and raised curbs aren’t renowned for being too forgiving to 200 mph bikes and their riders either - using The Force helps.
Got to respect these guys who race it on the day.

Those walls look like old drystone walls too. I haven't been to the Isle of man but if they're made from a hard stone like granite, you hit that at those speeds and you're not just dead, you're soup.
They are dry stone walls. I forget which rider had retired, but he had started commentating on the race. In his first year off he went on a course trip in a van. He was then speechless, for the last 3 years he had been brushing his helmet on a bush to get perfect line. When he stopped in the van he realized the was brushing his head against stone.

I went camping on the IOM in the sixties with our scout troop during the TT. Early one morning during their practice laps a rider hit a dry stone wall next to our campsite. He was dead before he hit the ground. You only get one chance in the TT.

Between 1907 and 2019 there have been 151 fatalities during official practices or races on the Snaefell Mountain Course, and 260 total fatalities (this number includes the riders killed during the Manx Grand Prix and Clubman TT race series of the late 1940s/1950s). these country lanes in normal road use are two-way traffic and we drive on the left normally, really nice footage of Peter

If a rider can knock a fly off a wall going through a turn, then he's got it just right.
Every TT season there were extra sailings laid on and one year I was transferred off my ship onto the MV Ben-My-Chree conventional ferry. They had stanchions that we'd set up on the vehicle deck so instead of a few bikes we could load up to 350 per crossing. Thing is that it takes time to load the bikes, chase the bikers off the vehicle deck and lash the bikes to the stanchions so what they did was have the owner park the bike and get them off the deck. We'd lash them down as we were leaving port. One sailing though another ship(SuperSeact 2 captained by one of the nutter Italian cpts so they really should have seen this coming😂) was coming into Douglas as we were leaving smacking us with their wash... most expensive dominoes ever and cherry on top, the aft deck looked right down into the vehicle deck so most of the bike owners watched. There was lots of screaming 😂 SeaContainers got to learn the hard way that expensive bikes are usually owned by rich people like Doctors and well.... Lawyers. No idea what the final amount was but it was a lot 😂
2003 I FINALLY got time off ship to watch part of the TT btw. It is truly an amazing experience 😉
I never miss this spectacular event..but even watching scares the sh*t out of me, yet I still go to witness these superheroes. They're racing on the public roads around the island with zero run off, 1 mistake you hit the kerbs or the stone walls. Unfortunately racers do die and sometimes multiple deaths happen over the entire event..

I attended the IOM TT races for over 25 years and was a communication martial for 15 of them and believe me, these guys and Gals, (yes the ladies ride also) are the real deal. to stand by the track and watch them go by is awesome. When it does go wrong it tends to be big. The TTcourse is about 37 miles long, all on closed public roads and the big bike races are 6 laps and that takes fitness. The lap record was set by this guy in the video in the time of 16m.42.778secs. an AVERAGE speed of 135.452mph. for the 37.73 miles.
...so the riders in this race are what we call, "Elite racers", most amazing thing I have seen so far....EVER!! To see it in person is on my "bucket list"...
