  • These days if you mention R8, people will almost certainly think of the Audi supercar. But that was named for another, earlier car. The one which went to Le Mans, and showed that Audi were a force to be reckoned with.
    I'm finishing my mini series on Audi race cars with an in-depth look at a real, Le Mans campaigned race car. It's pretty cool, and we take the covers off!

      If not, it's not even a real car.
      If so - it's an absolute racing beast with at least 362hp.
      If you don't think racing stripes add power, fight me.

    bustin 3 minutes for a transaxle? pfff....amazing!! the cockpit-front section piece of carbon seems super thick and solid. the rear of the car reflect fully how bright engineers and designers really are.the modularity of this car gives a clear advantage for such long distance races where anything can happen in a blink eye,then you have to be able to react in such manner too. this R8 is legend.

    Awesome job. Your enthusiasm is great to see. I was there at Sebring in 2000 when the R8 won on its debut. At that time no one knew that we had witnessed the coronation of what would be the most significant prototype of the decade and would establish itself alongside the Porsche 962 as an all time great. All through the 2000's I was at every Sebring 12hour and petit Lemans. Every time the main question was, "Will anyone challenge the Audis". And generally speaking, at those two events, no one ever could.

  • @csonkaperdido

    It's not just "told" that Audi changed the entire rear of the car in 3 minutes - there's video proof of them doing it here on TH-cam.
    It wasn't just the transaxle (transmission +differential combined)... It was the suspension mounting points and basically the entire rear of the car, minus the engine. I think it was a complete rear subframe.

    Great video, I’ve only seen it run in anger once in 2005 and it’s a properly special thing to see driven on the limit. The extra crash structure for the rollover protection was supposedly added after Michaele Alboretto was killed in a testing accident at the Lausitzring when the car rolled at high speed.

    I was standing in the tribunes across from the pits at Le Mans in 2000 when they did that very gearbox change. The astonishment from the commentators and actually watching it unfold was incredible. Rules changed the next year to outlaw such major sub-assemblies being swapped out (needed to finish with the same gearbox case, engine block and other key components that you started with IIRC) but Audi made an overnight step-change in how to run an endurance outfit and prepare to win.

      Joest deserve a LOT more credit than Audi do for that one.. Their role in understanding how to win Le Mans; how to run and how to beat works teams, and for the first time being able to work with a manufacturer in developing a car from scratch was invaluable. Joest designed that quick-change, not Audi, using the lessons learned from 20+ years of racing (or beating) Porsche.

You don’t even need to point anything out, I believe that the kind of audience that seeks out this kind of content knows what an intercooler or an exhaust manifold looks like. We want to see the way the engineers and designers packaged it all and made it all fit and work together.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed the Audi secret garage visit. some great info on the cars, but i found the content void of something... so i rewatched all 4 videos. and 2 points began to show, when you spoke about the vehicles you gave some great details but at points it was crying out for some period race footage so we could see the cars moving.
    and point number 2, you went into great detail telling us about the cars, but nothing of the people, the builders, the drivers, the team owner, the fans, to really complete the picture i'd have liked to have heard anecdotes of people who were involved in the cars in period. still though great series. and i hope to see more like this.

    It's built so well, that the modular design is actually banned. Having it built in 3 parts made it too easy for teams to basically rebuild the car from scratch while other teams struggled or just plain retired after a component failure. Audi was dominating on the track so well, that's why they were forced to change the nose on the R15, and still won anyway. Their foray into TDI warranted excellent reliability results, and set the pace for Diesel Hybrid technology that every hybrid road car should be using to this day. And the tech was already there with Volkswagen's Diesel electric hybrid concept car that was supposed to compete against the Prius. Elon Musk is an idiot for not realizing this.

    • @bradarsenault6984
      @bradarsenault6984 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joedmac78 joedmac78 yes, that is a sort of like a sway bar, they are more commonly referred to as anti roll bars in this application but basically the same thing. instead of being attached to the lower control arm, like on a typical road car, it's attached to the bellcrank. If one wheel is pushed up, like what happens when weight is shifter in a corner and the body rolls, the other wheel will also be pushed up, to resist the body roll. If you look at the link that attaches the two sides you will notice there are 3 holes to attach the rod end to, allowing more it less leverage over the pivot. Those rod ends are usually adjustable as well, either to allow for or influence ride height. The details of it are beyond my knowledge of the overall adjustment lengths of the individual links, though.

    OK, let's dream.
    Within this decade, Audi is going to come back to endurance racing again with a bang, but this time with a fully electric powertrain instead of Diesel... The R10 paved the way for Diesel, why not an E10 in, say, 2024? Given that the VW group as a whole decided to retire all its sport involvements "because fossil fuels", one can dream, right? Audi and Porsche in endurance racing, VW in rallying... All gone. For now?

    • @OsellaSquadraCorse
      @OsellaSquadraCorse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      VW retired all it's Combustion-only motorsport involvement; and only for VW, not VAG.
      Though they have scaled back, they are still involved as factory teams in GT3 racing (Audi, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini), MotoGP & WSBK (Ducati), TCR (domestic-only), IMSA/WEC (Porsche), DTM (Audi), SuperGT (factory loan drivers); so not all gone, at all.

    • @naturshoot8448

      That would be some feat of engineering to come back to Le Mans with an electric only drive train. Le Mans is around 60 times longer than an average Formula-E race distance, and a Formula-E car is about the third of the power of a Porsche 919 hybrd. So battery tech for racing at Le Mans would need to be massively better than today and there would need to be a huge breakthrough in recharging tech. Cars would almost certainly need a swap-able battery pack, that would need to be done in the same time or less it would take to refuel a normal car, or have enough range to allow fewer but longer changes. Weight would be the enemy I expect, again current formula E is only a 54 kWh battery and these cars don't spend large amounts of time flat out at 200mph down the Mulsanne, instead running on city tracks so they are not at full chat all the time.
      There are over 30 pit stops for fuel in a winning Le Mans car, and on F-E tech, we'd need over 60 battery swaps that are likely to take longer than a fuel stop. So to make an electric car competitive we'd need 3 times the power, and if it takes twice as long to swap a battery than refuel, around 4 times more battery capacity than F-E for around the same weight to be in the same ball park. So around 12x better battery tech than today.
      However, there was something a bit special hearing a Panoz charging round La Sarthe, a sound we are never likely to hear again. Electric cars do lose some of the visceral quality of motorsport, even if for mass transport they have more upsides.

    • @francisgaliegue6645
      @francisgaliegue6645 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@naturshoot8448 I disagree with a battery swap replacement being a necessity, even with the current technology.
      If you look at what is currently available, what I call the "power to capacity" ratio (ie, the power in kW versus the capacity of the battery in kWh) is already 3.25 to 1 if you look at the Tesla Model 3 (250 kW peak charge for a 75 kWh battery). Volume being no object, and assuming you have a capacious enough supercapacitor as a buffer, you can count on a sustained 200 kW charging curve.
      Now imagine is the battery were not 75 kWh but 250 kWh... The gravimetric capacity of the battery would be lower (because you could bathe the battery cells in coolant) although the volumetric capacity would drop, but who cares? This is a racing application.
      My guess is that you can do a 250 kWh battery with a 1 MW charge rate without a problem. Maybe even more than that.

      Quick exchangeable modular component parts costs money. If you look at desktop PC vs. an enterprise server. The server has redundancy in mind with hot-swappable hard drives, fans & power supplies. So in case a component breaks there’s fall over backup that won’t completely shutdown the computer. You could replace the broken hard drive, fan or power supply and the server without shutting down the computer. Sort of like endurance racing in Le Mans. Your domestic car or PC doesn’t really need quick service repairability. Since your domestic car isn’t racing and your PC doesn’t need 24/7 uptime availability. So all those modular components isn’t necessary and will just drive up costs. Domestic cars are also engineered and optimized for quick factory production line assembly.

      @@Massegainer I think there is a Renault where one has to remove the wheel and inner fender to get at the light bulb. The "worse" one I have come in contact with was an Corsa, on that one had to remove the air box to change the head light bulb (I can not remember if it was the left or the right side).

    Great video. I was at Le Mans in 2002 and 2003 so witnessed what you said. The Bentley sounded like a hoover in comparison to everything else.
    Can you do a similar feature on the Porsche 917? For me, it is arguably the greatest race car ever made.
    Keep up the excellent content. 👏

    There is something about these cars that just tickles a special part of my brain. It's the shire simplistic nature of the goal of being the fastest combined with the hugely complex task of getting there. There is pragmatism combined with huge human and mechanical effort. It's beauty for the needs sake not for the beauty sake. Simple yet complex. Brute force and elegance in one. Power and balance in an incredible harmony just for the simple task of arriving faster or going further than the competition. No BS, no show just GO! And that's beautiful.

    Some really nice videos, I’ve seen the cars close up at classic events and they are truly works of art with incredible attention to detail. Couple of points which people may find interesting. The whole modular approach was kind of stopped by the ACO to some extent. They didn’t like the rear axle change system as they felt changing that much of the car was a bit too much of an advantage. The rule was changed in that you can not replace the gearbox casing anymore. Secondly with regards to aero. For sure if anyone has seen the latest LMP2’s or LMP1’s naked they are very much like a single seater underneath now. Just incredible. The air is channeled so much now through the body rather than over it. Lastly I could be wrong but maybe the rollover hoop modification was due to the accident with Michele Alboreto. During testing the first version of the car it took off and landed on its roof. The impact just crushed the roll hoop and he didn’t survive. I think the car landed on a guard rail but I could be wrong. Very sad and a tragic loss. Still a pretty safe race car though. I’ve seen some huge accidents recorded in the R8 and the driver walked away, that flat bottom though was always a danger. However you’ll notice on the R15 the regulations were changed and the cars were mandated to have two roll over structures.

      @OsellaSquadraCorse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, Michele went over the guardrail at the Lausitzring. The first impact took off the rollhoop, so it wasn't there when it hit again on the guardrail, before landing on the access road around the oval.
      Sad day, Michele was SUCH a nutcase off the track, and a great driver on it; really in his element in sportscars. I'm always reminded of him when I see Patrese return to historic and GT racing: Michele tried to persuade Riccardo to 'un-retire' and join him at Le Mans in the late 90's, but Riccardo said he was finished with competitive racing.

    Biela running out of fuel was actually part of an Audi own DVD...Followed the R8s right back to 1999 when they ran R8R and R8C's. A great era (esp battling with the Toyotas and Peugeots) which we thought would go on for ever. Feel priviledged to have been part of it looking back...BTW who gives a thumbs down on this? It's not just "told" that they replaced the rear end in minutes, you can still find the original TV coverage on TH-cam of them doing it for the first time at Le Mans. If you like seeing these cars up close, you should definitely attend the races. I'm not sure if it's different in Europe, but in the IMSA series in North America, every ticket counts as a paddock pass, and it's not hard to get up pretty close with the cars and drivers.

    I can get so much power out of the S4 engine with a cheap tune and goes like a race car with very high torque even at low rpms and top speed like a supercar. My favourite brand. I can't do anything with a 9114s to get more power cheaply.

    Super cool, i enjoyed all 4, but liked the r8, and the A4 the most. Kind of defeats the purpose of showing off a scale model of a race car, when we all want to see the engine and all the components, whether its a rep or the real deal. Awesome content!!
