I'm 60 yrs. I'm a army veteran. I worked the first 20 yrs non union and the last 20 union. I wouldn't have a pension without working union.
Dad wouldn't had a pension if he hadn't been a member of ALF-CIO during his 31 years at GM. 1948-1979.
I don't have a pension.
Interesting, I just turned 60 on April same, army during the cold war. And yes, I was a republican, if you want to know? But, until Reagan's 1st year into his second term I got caught up with what was happening in Germany and the world. I realized what my party was saying and what was happening? In our country didn't fit! I paused for 5 years before I realized, that the Democrat party became the republican party and republican party became the Democratic party... back in history!😢😅😂
I wish I had a pension.
I want there to be more unions and better worker rights. However, non union jobs with pensions exist, even if they're much less common than they used to be.
Bernie Sanders has been making the wealth transfer case for a very long time and that is why the people love him❤

If you're voting for democracy, you're going to have to get involved at the primary level.
It does not appear that either the Republicans, or the group of Democrats behind Biden are especially democratic.
It's going to take a generation of targeted democratic support in the primaries to make a dent in this Federal government of foreign investors, by foreign investors, for foreign investors.

I hope Joe Biden will stay as President as long as he can physically do this job.
❤🙏💯⚖️💪🇺🇲💪⚖️💯🙏❤️
I agree.
Biden has always stuttered, that dont bother me. He is still doing a good job, brilliant in fact.
Sad how illiterate the citizens have become that they care more about a president looking a certain way than what they have accomplished. Awful. 😣
Biden has done an INCREDIBLE JOB!!!! He could be in a wheelchair and I’d vote for him. He’s experienced, brilliant, tactical, and has compassion and empathy like nobody else. He has been one of us and he’s suffered so much loss. I’m sick seeing how shallow so many citizens can be. The alternative reality with a Trump presidency is just NOT AN OPTION. 😡
You don’t know the overreaching legislation his administration passed.
@@MrEye4get so what was overreaching??
I finally agreed with Michael Steele about something:. Newt Gingrich was the start of the decline of the GOP.
Reagan was. Gingrich was just a progression of Reagan’s policies.
2028 will be about ~6 decades
@jimfisher1616,no,that was Reagan.Gingrich cheapened it,Limbaugh lied about it
Reagan took some cues from Nixon.
@@LCamp-cr7fs Agree ! Reagan first then Gingrich
It’s very important that ever remember we vote for an administration, not just one person. Project 2025 was explicitly written by several members of the last Trump administration. I’d rather vote for a tomato than fascism.
Indeed. The problem with this 4 year cycle of presidential elections is how much the better campaigner tends to be the winner. Who can be quicker and more clever, and put more zingers and one liners into the media more consistently. The better campaigner does not at all imply a better governor which is the actual job. It's like if job interviews for plumbers were dance contests.
That is a structural problem with Presidential Republic systems. There are pros and cons of this compared to Parliamentary Republic but it seems to be an increasing bigger problem in the ever fractured media landscape, performative culture and short attentions spans.
I love tomatoes!
How do we beat the fascists? First of all, stop letting them label themselves as "the Second American Revolution".
Project 2025 is basically the Heritage Foundation wishlist. The Heritage Foundation often has some influence over Republicans administrations, just like progressive or center left think tanks often influence Democrat admins. Doesn't mean that it's necessarily "Trumps plan" or that he signs off on all of it. Anyone who pays any attention should know that Heritage has always had disagreements with Trump and the new base. Heritage are more establishment Republicans as far as economics go, for example. Aka, free market fundamentalist cringe.
@chickenfishhybrid44 this might be more convincing if the republican party platform was specific and clear. It's not. They will fill the gaping vacuum in republican leadership if Trump wins.
So glad to have Michael Steele on the Bulwark platform.
He hasn't stopped being a conservative. Bulwark folks haven't either.
Yay!
The once head of the RNC having Thom Hartmann as a guest talking about Reagan’s Trickle Down Destruction of Unions, the middle class and American. This is FREAKING AWESOME! It’s also an anti-fascist coalition 🙂
1000% agree. I love Michael, because he accepts facts. He is an an important voice.
Secret Service need to protect America not Trump.
It's unbelievably refreshing to hear a conservative acknowledge that "trickle down" economics was probably always a load of BS, even if he bought into it at the time.
The problem with trickle down was it was trickle out since all the manufacturing had gone overseas. All that came back was what came to the stockholders.
First time I heard that, I could see the rich upper class urinating on the rest of America.
You give money to the rich, they keep it. You give it to the poor, they have to spend it in the stores of the rich. Money trickles UP.
People bought into slavery at the time too. Ang there are still companies that benefited from it in business today, but they keep quite .
Biden did well on press conference. Vote Biden
Finally someone on the Bulwark who isn't a Reagan fanboy.
I have never understood the love and honor of Reagan! He was just an actor, for god’s sake, and not a very good one either. It was name recognition and movie roles that got him elected ! He was wealthy so naturally he was a republican.

Just let Thom Hartmann speak uninterrupted to address how to transfer obscene One Percenters' wealth ($51T) back to the middle-class - and please bury the wrong economic Reagan /GOP "Trickle down" crap.
I'm glad Biden just mentioned this in his speech, something to the the effect of :"I've wanted to kill the idea of 'trickle down' my whole career."
As a young adult who survived the trickle down plan, all I felt was that I was pissed on. It required a lot of debt to survive.

rulings like that didn't happen over night. Started in the 70's. Even Thom has even said it over the years. Probably can find a video on his page on that issue.
💙🇺🇸 Thank you for addressing the issues that concern me.
Thom is right. Americans are so stressed economically, they don't all have time to appreciate Biden's accomplishments. They notice strength, good or bad.
Please help the democrats as I think we need everyone to come to the table. I am very frightened of another Trump’s presidency. I am afraid the message is not getting to the masses. No one talking to Americans directly about these issues .
After Thom described the transfer of economic power to the wealthy in the 1920s and 30s, which touted the trickle down theory, and the last 2-3 Republican administrations that followed this same theory who repeated it, it's no wonder our country has more billionaires than ever before and crushing poverty. If only the young republicans in the 80s were enlightened to the disastrous path it would lead this country. Our educational path in the past 60 years has encouraged more young people not to seek further degrees and most of those who have come from wealthy families. Our current Supreme Court has now leagally cemented this to continue.
Thank you Michael and Thom, love you both.
Thank you. We will build a new party after this. People are having this party after this.

Do we have to go to DC and camp out in protest? Probably can't do that anymore, either.
I'm 74 yo. Fifty years ago, my generation swore when WE got into power, things would change. We conducted sit-ins and protests and some of our numbers were shot dead by government agents at Ohio State U. With blood spilled, we may have moved the Overton window a bit, but all that hard work was reversed by the smell of money. Some of our generation joined the ranks of the enemy. Michael Steele, this was an excellent discussion today. Thank you.
it's not just the top 1% .. in fact it is the top1% + the next 9% ... the top 1 has 20% of the wealth and the 9% has 60% ... therefore the top 10% controls 80% of wealth .. leaving the 'bottom' 90% to struggle over the remaining 20% .. by just focusing on the top1% you let that other 9% 'off the hook' when in fact they have collectively more power and control .. and will never relinquish it ..
Well, the Democrat party is filled with the top 10-20%. Of course, a lot of them will want to point above themselves as the source of the issues.

The concept of "wealth redistribution" has always been reviled in the USA. How do we make people understand how necessary and justified it would be?
We need to make them understand that it's already been happening, just away from them instead of towards them. Yet they've been conditioned to think they're just like the 1% and always moments away from striking it rich, at which point they'll be a part of the 1% and benefit from the existing policies.
Can start by being less completely out of touch or cringe in almost every other area.

Great conversation. Problem is people have become lazy with social media and sound bites. Facts matter
The answer to the opening question is that the gop has so villainized tax increases on the 1% that it’s been a non starter for democrats for decades. But with wealth inequality finally at a crushing point maybe the dems can bring this back to the table, but they’ll need supportive gop moderates. If any are even left in governance.
Do you truly believe that the Democrats would actually have done all these things you like and support if it wasn't for the GOP? Seems like a bit of a cop out
@chickenfishhybrid44 we believe that if the GOP were not increasingly authoritarian and decreasingly willing to remain within democratic norms, they would have done *more.*
