How we interact with the planet in America would change, our environment would get far better!

Too many garden centre products are grown with or contain peat moss. Because peat takes so long to develop (about 1 mm per year) it is basically non-renewable, what’s worse is that it’s carbon rich and taken from very biodiverse habitats. Great points, Ed! Your videos influenced me to become a vegan myself. I would like for you to address a couple of questions I have: 1. About the repurposing of land used by animal agriculture for plant based agriculture: what about factors such as topography, soil and climate of a region? 2. On a related note, a lot of people talk about 'food miles' associated with vegan food. How does imported vegan food compare to local animal sourced food? Keep inspiring people! Sending lots of love.
Good questions! Indeed vegans like Ed tend to oversimplify what's possible with regards to repurposing land from animal ag. In reality a lot of animals are raised on non arable land, so you simply cannot grow any crops there. The only way humans can get any nutrition from this land is through animals, because they'll eat what grows there, whilst we cannot. I live in the 3rd largest beef exporting nation and virtually all cows here graze non arable land year round, very few feedlots. Food miles is an interesting point that Ed and friends dont want to talk about either. Vegans are typically very limited in how much they can care about environmental issues, because to be an abolitionist vegan means you must oppose all forms of sustainable agriculture.
@@rorylee3582 it is an interesting argument regarding non arable land. I live in Norway, and there is a woman here that decided to grow vegetables all the way up in the mountains. I'm curious at what point land is considered non arable? When farmers are too lazy to plant vegetables there? This woman plants stuff while it is still some snow left, and makes around $9500 per acre yearly.I'm sure there is a way to do it in Australia too, or invest in some greenhouses. The transportation of vegetables has a really low amount of CO2 equivalents compared to those of making something out of meat, even if you were not shipping the meat. You can load a ship with a lot of vegetables and fruits, so the trip is divided among all of them. Meat is also being exported and shipped, as well as food for agriculture like soy, so I fail to see the argumentation here. In the end, it is no argument against veganism, as it does not have anything to do with environment. Vegan food could be worse for the environment, and vegans would still be buying that instead of products from exploited animals (it isn't in most cases, thought). Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. In case you haven't heard the definition yet.
@@frodeverli4852 very interesting reply 👌, I totally agree with what you're saying (or rather implying) about arable land. I know of a guy in Austia doing something that sounds similar, Sepp Holzer 😍 the man is an absolute hero of mine. Anyway, I think that the main differentiating factor (besides obvious soil fertility and rainfall) is weather or not you can access land with heavy ag machinery. I'd guess this woman with the profitable vege farm in the mountains isnt using a combine harvester? If the land isn't accessible then its non arable for purposes of *industrial* ag, but as you rightly point out that doesnt mean it's impossible to grow there. Also industrial agriculture requires a certain scale to function, relatively smaller parcels of land might not be profitable for a commercial grower. And I totally agree with you that animal rights and environmental concerns are totaly separate (I would say conflicting) ideas/philosophy. I'm all about the environment, I'm not concerned with the rights of an individual animal so much as the rights of the species. Hope that makes sense. I dont have any problem with vegans, I couldn't care less. But what annoys me is when wealthy affluant people who purchase nearly all their food from industral agriculture, leacture people about the ethics of food choices. Often people who are actually taking responsibility for their impact on ecology, people with backyard chickens et cetera. I wrote too much, sorry, lock down boredom ☺

You, bitesizevegan and dr Gregor to me are the champions of veganism at the moment. So much good information readily available to the public. You deserve more views.
Well said, and clearly argued Ed! It's still a time of transition away from animal farming, and our economic system drives people to want to protect their livelihood, and so try to find reasons why it's ok to continue with this. Fascinating that John D Liu talks about the fact that areas where humans began farming animals are now deserts, just turned to dust and that this directly changes the weather patterns. Animal exploitation is a major cause of deserts, and climate change. The evidence is there. It can also be reversed even now, sadly these people don't have a long range view. Great video.
They don't understand they are doing anything wrong, and their livelihoods are dependent on it, so _of course_ they're going to arrive at those types of conclusions. Our job is to convince them otherwise with reason and evidence, it's the only way.

@@ethicalrevolution3294 thanks for the reply and articles. I agree that eating cereals directly would be far more efficient in terms of calorie utilisation, and so this would allow us to scale back farming operations and ultimately reduce emissions. However, this still doesn't address the issue of the loss of soil health and biodiversity that results from conventional arable farming (relating to the ~ 60 years of remaining top soil mentioned by Ed). Reducing/cutting out meat consumption buy us time but I believe that change is required across all conventional agricultural practices.

Surely, all the cows, pigs and chickens I fed from were brought up in a "humane" way ... than I realized: I have to walk maybe 5 minutes to find the first place full of meat, dairy and eggs - but I have NO F***ING CLUE where the next farm is.
It got me thinking and doing a little research. What I found led me to channels like this. The rest, they say, is history ;) vegan for 4 months now

Anyone who makes a living from the death of a creature doesn’t want to start connecting the dots. Keep doing what you’re doing EE....this world needs your voice🌿
We connect the dots! You presume that we are without heart or feelings? We have these traits but we also have nutritional needs and we have diversity needs. We like other predators on Earth have certain diets, the majority of us eat farm raised products. So yes by this meat eating has fallen into abuse.
"If you had to get up off your ass and go out into the woods and hunt for your food you would gain a deeper respect for meat, use it only as needed or on special occasions! This would greatly reduce meat consumption, but leave a safety net. I am for 100% elimination of Animal Factory farms. I am for small farms with more expensive meat, to drive down demand to keep it small local and safe.
@James Parker yep you are correct, I want you to explain that to a room filled with survivors of the 1980's famine in Africa. I bet they will either stone you or behead you?
@@troydavis4452 I think that that is a bit out of context for they were starving and they ate to survive, but in Uk, Usa etc. Its not essential so why do it other than money.
@@milliemarianne7027 It is essential to have. Just because we participate in a global economy does not mean we are free to just eat plants. Disruptions such as COVID-19 or a war or disaster can stop this supply chain just like it is now! This is a reality, as sad as it is to say it is truth. It is also well known that diversity is key to good healthy diets. We must also learn to think local, not global. Globalization brought us COVID-19!
@James Parker good on you for caring, yes it is a very hard and sad life for these animals indeed. Nature is cruel. In the wild these poor animals die in more brutal ways, it is always the same end they die sick or as food! Predators will always get the prey. No animal in nature just gets to grow old and die. They get slow they are food! They lose a turf war for Alpha spot they are food! It's dog eat dog sadly, This is God's punishment handed down to all life at our fall. "For the wages of sin is death!"
This has become a massive point of contention that suggests that the Serpent or snake was once an upright walker like man, but tempted man and thusly met with condemnation, sentenced to eat dirt for the rest of his days slithering on it's belly. Then man was charged with death! We became mortal, and frail, we could now die!
Which became another point of contention and denial, the belief that our soul/spirit lives on after our flesh dies. Defying God's decree that we die. Which we cannot escape, God's word says it the dead know nothing! We, nor animals live after death. We will sleep until we are raised and judged.
God gave us the animals, the land, the world to keep, use, have dominion over it. But we were instructed to dress it, keep it and care for it. Leaving it better than we found it when we go. I think we failed at that, especially in how we have come to treat our food animals. If I was President that would change! How we interact with the planet in America would change, our environment would get far better!
Why do carnist always go on about avocados and coconuts... the last time I had either of those things was 6 years ago; when I wasn't even vegan lol
And people who eat animal products are actually eating avocados etc too 🙄
Andrea A Double the fat up, why not. So healthy. NOT
honestly, most of the time I see an avocado on a menu it’s with egg and toast (clearly not directed at vegans and a poor attempt at making an option) I’ve come across so many people who eat avocados and they’re not vegan, so why it’s always used as an argument against veganism is so daft, but proves that it’s that easy to just spread misinformation.. same goes for the soy argument and then when I tell people most soy is used for animals they just move on as if I didn’t say anything 🙃 lmao
I bought three avocados two weeks ago, and still have one in the fridge. These were the first avocados I'd purchased in almost a year. What a problem I am!

The fact is that going vegan can be done today. It doesn't require spending money and it's way more easy than to stop transportation for example.
So why are we starting first with renewable energy or the transportation sector?
In addition, reducing methane emission will give us results in 10-15 years unlike CO2 which will give us results in 100 years at least.
You even save money if you don't buy the replacement products all the time. Just beans, legumes and veggies with a lot of spices

There were whole discarded pig carcasses for 'composting' right next to the tiny cowpen, in which the cows were living in mud/manure up to their knees, with nowhere dry. There were also dead chickens in the field, and the pigs were in confinement even though this was a small local farm.

When you get to buying in composts and soil improvers, look out for peat-free. Too many garden centre products are grown with or contain peat moss. Great points, Ed! Your videos influenced me to become a vegan myself. I would like for you to address a couple of questions I have:

@@matthutcheson8646 Ok here are some environmental things you can Google. And to sum it up animal agriculture uses 83% of land, but only provides 18% of the world's calories. During the study period the United States used 27% of crop calorie production for food, and only 14% of produced plant protein is used for food directly. More than half of crop production by mass in the United States is directed to animal feed, which represents 67% of produced calories and 80% of produced plant protein."
"Our results show that many of the most productive crops, such as maize and soybeans, are responsible for a high proportion of losses to the food system via livestock and biofuel production. On a global basis, 74% of maize production goes to animal feed. Therefore most of the produced maize calories are lost to the feed to animal production conversion, and increasingly to ethanol production. Only 24% of the global maize calories produced are delivered to the food system as either plant or animal products."
"The number of people fed per cropland hectare on calories delivered on Indian croplands averages 5.9 people ha−1, a result of a 90% rate of calorie delivery to the food system. If all produced calories were delivered as food, this figure would rise slightly to 6.5 people ha−1. On delivered calories India is able to feed 5.9 people ha−1, which is about the global average of 6 people fed ha−1."
"The United States could feed almost three times as many people per cropland hectare on calories produced from major crops. The US agricultural system alone could feed 1 billion additional people by shifting crop calories to direct human consumption."
Energy and protein feed-to-food conversion efficiencies in the US and potential food security gains from dietary changes

"Here we quantify caloric and protein conversion efficiencies for US livestock categories. We then use these efficiencies to calculate the food availability gains expected from replacing beef in the US diet with ... ("poultry" is slightly more efficient than "beef" so what?) ... a plant-based alternative. Averaged over all categories, caloric and protein efficiencies are 7%-8%. At 3% in both metrics, beef is by far the least efficient."
Alright now add the billions of people who will now switch to being vegan, let's see those numbers, it would be devastating 🤣😂🤣
You speak SO well✊
Good job as usual, Ed.😊
everyone needs to see this. ed, you should make ads that people will see on youtube!
Only vegans eat avocados.
True story 🙄
Avocados and chemicals and mock meat. An we all die of protein deficiency.
Ttosllihcs.J
It’s true. I died of protein deficiency. I’m actually a ghost.
🌱👻
@@Flow-sy As I was replying to this comment my crippling b12 deficiency meant my fingers turned to dust before I could finish. I'm typing this with my nose.
Too much fat around the heart is a killer and salt. People are heading for a heart attack. Might as well eat a packet of crisps.
@@Flow-sy nobody dies of protein deficiency moron,
You deserve billions of subscribers, every time I finish talking with someone about going vegan, I send them your way, thanks for standing up for Earth bro.
please please keep driving this point home, about the comparison between farmed animal land use versus plants. its a big deal. and the point about animal ag threatening our food supply through wasteful land use is also very important.
thank you so much for all that you do. it means so much to this earth and its inhabitants
Hey ed you should do a video on how to find reputable research and differentiate between what’s reliable vs unreliable like looking at authorship, examining the study etc. I feel like way too many people today try to back what they’re saying using articles written by people who are not experts in their fields and learning this could help with our communication and educating ourself and other people
I love to listen to you. It keeps me grounded with my believes. But there are many more people to come along. And I'm sure they will :-)
I really appreciate how informative his videos are, rather than allowing frustration get to him and throw spiteful comments back, he respectfully states facts 🙌
You are my hero brother !
Keep doing it for peace and love on this planet .
Well said! Thank you for the information. Great video ❤️
Thanks, Ed.

Ed, You're a legend.
