SDPC Tech Tips: 4.3L LV3 V6 DOD/AFM Delete

  • Nick goes over our new AFM/DOD Delete for the Ecotec3 4.3L V6 found in your 2014+ full size trucks, SUVs and fleet vehicles. These are almost direct copies of their bigger brothers the L83 and L86, just missing two cylinders. Unfortunately, they also inherited the dreaded DOD lifters to put it into 4 cylinder mode.
    We have put together a delete package for your daily driver, or maybe you've decided to buck the trend of "LS Swap, bro!" and take one out of the salvage yard for a restomod, sandrail, rock crawler, or track weapon.

    Nick, one thing you should do and emphasize to the viewers who may be shade tree mechanics and or first timers with doing engine work, is to make sure and clean the mating surfaces before applying the silicone sealer.
    I recommend using acetone and a "white lint free" rag or as many as it takes, and apply acetone to the rag and wipe, wipe, wipe the mating surfaces, until the rag is NO LONGER picking up any oil residue. BTW..... why acetone ? Both brake clean and alcohol leave a residue. Brake clean has a propellant in the can. Alcohol is seldom pure. I used to do chemical anodizing of aluminum jet engine containment cases. The anodizing chemical will ALWAYS tell you if there's ANY contamination on the surface metal, because it doesn't etch if a contaminant is present. Acetone was the only truly effective cleanser. You'll be surprised how much oil that isn't visible and can't be felt, is trapped in the metal. That acetone will draw it out, to be wiped off, and the acetone will evaporate completely, leaving a perfectly clean surface for the silicone's acid to etch itself to. Silicone sealer will not bond well if there's any oil in the mating surfaces material. This is especially important for older engines that have some cylinder and piston ring wear, because there will be more blow by going into the crankcase, which can cause a positive crankcase pressure. When that happens any oil on the internal surfaces is going to find a way out. Which means, for instance the front timing cover, if it wasn't properly sealed, is going to leak. The customer or owner of the vehicle is going to be unhappy if his or her formerly dry clean engine, now seeps oil.
    An ounce of prevention goes a long way...

    Have a 4.3L in my '17 Sierra. Great engine. Saved $2000 CAD over the V8. Good power. Even with heavy LT 34" tires, loaded with my wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs and my 6000lb 5th wheel trailer. I don't see a lack of power, fuel economy is decent too. Granted I have done the intake, some exhaust work and a flash tune... Funny enough tho, I kinda like the V4 chug when I'm just rolling along through town at 1200-1300 rpm. Zero issues with the engine. Granted it's only got about 55k miles/90k kms...

    I have the AFM delete kit and I am in the middle of a truck operation. I HIGHLY recommend getting a Chilton's manual or GM Service Advisories if you want to do this to a 2018 4.3 or 5.3 Silverado. The 4.3 2018 is a tricky beast to get to the actual work. The electronic steering rack and the front differential must be removed to get to the oil pan. It's easier than pulling the engine but still a lot of tedious work. I don't have the time to do a video on mine, but a full start to finish on the 4.3 LV3 - GEN 5 would be great to have online. Take pictures on your phone as you go through the disassembly, and it makes the rebuild much easier. I'm also doing short video clips on my phone to describe the process better than the manuals.
    I got the oil pan down and I'm replacing the pickup tube and oil pump. I noticed that when I took all the bolts out to get to the tube it was loose! I thought it was supposed to be a press fit and I emailed tech support at Melling to ask their opinion and if they had a tool to insert their new one. The tube is 1.179" diameter, so the standard 3/4" tool won't work to press it into the receiver on the oil pan. Suggestions welcome on that one! - Thx!

    Very informative! I have 2 suggestions. If the cam retainer plate and bolts aren't very expensive, it seems they should be included in the kit. How about including some sort of simple cam removal/installation tool. Would a 3D printed item be strong enough? Otherwise a simple drilled plate with t-handle.

    I want this engine in my Grand National. It is a massive upgrade over the 3.8L or even the 3800 series 2/3. If I could find someone to modified an intake for me, I would buy a block and rebuilt it and slap one in my GN.

    On my 2014 4.3, I often got a misfire code on #1. Then started getting lifter noise, again #1. Pulled the valve cover and found that the intake rocker had about 1/4” gap. Now I am in the middle of tear down and find that I can’t get that lifter out. It moves but has a dead stop with about 1/2” of lifter protruding from the top of the bore. I guess lifter will have to come out from the bottom. The DOD lifters never had a problem. I am planning on doing the delete, assuming the lifter bore is not damaged.

    On your comments regarding the balance shaft. 1,000,000% agree with you. There is ZERO REASON to delete the balance shaft. There is no benefit Horsepowerwise and no benefit Torquewise. The balance shaft is a great part for this motor and it only creates issues at install and removal. If you don't have time to deal with balance shafts, then stop doing motors.

    • @Spock68
      @Spock68 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The imbalance created by removing it would most likely ROB the engine of way more power than anything close to what deleting it may save.

Question im working on a 2018 GMC sierra 1500 4.3 lv3. 71600 miles the oil pressure is 40 psi but after engine gets warm maybe 20 mins later oil pressure go down t0 8 psi, i already replaced engine oil pump (with original ac delco) and still is doing the same thing. when i removed the oil pan everything was clean no metal shavings or dirt inside the oil pan, no play at rod berings everything was normal. note if i increase rpms the oil pressure go up. so what could be the problem

    I have a 2018 Silverado 4.3L. V6 with 67,000 miles possible LV3.
    Don't know how to tell with LV i have.
    when i had the engine code read at a Auto Zone.
    Chevy Dealer repair shop
    P06DD = the parts man said it was the cam shaft bolt.
    {your video said it a Valve} Camshaft actuator valve,
    P0011 = "A" Camshaft Position -
    Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
    I first thought it was the DOD problem. I was going to try look for collapsed lifter but, did a Automatic Transmition Fluide flush of engine oil first, i think it may be slug.. I also checked the oil pressure screen, it was clean.
    ( I Don't know how well the oil was changed for the first 40,000 miles.)
    I don't hear a lifter tapping but there is a lope or shake to the engine .... i think.
    Did ATF flush but the engine light is still on.
    The DOD does not switch from 6 to 4.
    The oil pressure runs between 30 & 45 psi. I was wondering if the oil pump coil fails.. but you said it will put out 65 psi.
    Is it possible for the ATM valve to fail.
    can you help me figure this out.

    I had some scuffs on my lifters and camshaft when I took them out. What's the root cause of the issue. Is it the VLOM itself or just the AFM lifters getting stuck? Cause my lifters weren't stuck when I tested prior to removing them. Should I also be replacing the oil pump?

  • @Ovenman5000
    @Ovenman5000 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have one of these and I just have it programed to not go into v4 mode. The oil pumps have a pretty severe issue of going out and they are extremely expensive to replace. It cost me 3800 at my local GMC dealer. Has anyone else had this issue? Also, would this potentially help save the oil pump?

Also, just had to install a NuTech long block as the first ATK gave up the ghost after ~154k miles (drive it pretty hard with 2 leafs added to the rear to support shell, rack, lots of tools). I've kept up on suspension and drive train maintenance over the years, so I'm planning to keep it at least as long as the new engine will stand. Watching this video has got me wondering if one of these puppies could be shoe-horned in with that T5 stapled behind, Jesus take the wheel! Any thoughts? Thanks for the videos!

      @@Sdpartscenter I did purchase one of Amazon and it was close, the teeth would not fully engage though so when I torqued on it to break the crank bolt loose, it slipped. I reformed it to make it engage the teeth better, (very soft metal) and it just bent and failed to hold the flywheel. I reshaped it again and welded a steel plate to the side of it to beef it up and finally was able to get the crank bolt loose.

    Very timely video. I'm thinking about doing an LV3 swap into a 4th-gen Camaro, replace the original 3.8L Buick. The LV3 hasn't gotten enough attention from the performance aftermarket. The LV3 was designed by GM to replace the Gen IV 4.8L V8. It makes the same power and torque with 0.5L less displacement. And it's E85 capable, and gains 30 HP running on the corn juice.

      DOD = Displacement On Demand, or the fancier term is AFM = Active Fuel Management and now DFM = Dynamic Fuel Management
      DOD/AFM is where a v8 equipped with the system will shut off 4 cylinders during low demand or cruising. The 4.3 LV3 V6 will shut off 2 cylinders.
      DFM in the newer V8s can shut off any number of cylinders in any order, engineers with GM got it down to even just operating on one cylinder in testing.
