I appreciate this info. But paying 100 for a flight that will take 17 hrs, rather than paying 150 for a flight that would take 7 hrs…not worth the 58 dollar difference. Not at all. Unless I missed something🤷♀️
Turkish MILES and Smiles may be best price, but I couldn't find a single flight available from Florida to Chicago, Houston or Nashville that wasn't already full for many time periods. Good luck with that one, I guess. Lol
How do you figure out which dates / airports will work with each option? I keep going to each one option trying to find out which one will let me go to BZN on may 13’th but they all say “not available” for this date
Great video Oak! One thing I noticed that if you depart from a small city, say ROA near my side, the points redemption value is not that good (normally because of at least 1-stop flights). Plus, not much of choices. So I would say folks living in big cities are getting more value from the points you earned.
I'd say it is usually advantageous to begin your search with one way trips and then booking round trip if the service is available for your preferred travel dates. It can be difficult at times to find round trip or open jaw services on their own, but price-wise it usually won't make a difference with transfer partners since the award rates will remain the same whether or not you book a one way or round trip.
If I understand correctly, your flights booked with points will not accrue miles as they are already award tickets. Only flights booked with cash will earn miles with United or any other airline.
It was very annoying, but my wife and I just went away to Hawaii for our anniversary in March using Turkish --> United. We were able to fly DC to Hawaii for $150 round-trip. In addition to the website being difficult, if you're booking for two people, you need to call and hope you get a customer service rep who knows what to do. Unfortunately Turkish devalued a little, so now it's 10k each way instead of 7.5k each way. But there's still great value. We were able to book ours by sheer happenstance a week before Turkish devalued.
Agreed, even with the devaluation it's still a good value if you can find availability. I've yet to book 2 tickets at once so this is a good data point, it's unfortunate most of the alliance partners usually have subpar customer service. Congrats on the anniversary
Hey I tried booking a flight on Turkish and Cathay but there are no available flights! Do I need to transfer miles first to view flights? Am I doing something wrong or are there just no flights available? I am searching for flights in Jan. 2024 today on Dec. 11
This is awesome!!! I was looking at getting a different credit card that transferred miles to the airlines that I use. Im still learning how to get the most out of my travel miles and this information is the best 💪🏾
Just got the Venture X and as a retired couple, we are looking to use our flexible schedule and Capital One miles for lotsa travel. You REALLY gave a great intro on how to do that. Thanks.
How about asking for price match from capital one as an offered feature if it’s cheaper somewhere else ? Would that be easier than going through all the transfer process ? Is there something I am missing ?
Well the price match doesn't work for points, only for cash price fares, and there would also be certain restrictions on the price match (I.e. it being the exact flight service and airline operating the flight). If you can find a price match for good value, then it's easy enough and arguably easier than transferring points if you were going to pay in cash anyway
FWIW at this moment 1000 Capital One miles will transfer to 1600 with Aeromexico.. For my purposes the best I've seen from AMEX or Cap 1 was 1000 MRp's or C1 miles for 1200 Flying Blue. 7:39 I'm confused. This is about Capitol One Miles, which are flexible points for it's partner airlines. Now you're referencing Delta Sky Miles, which are not a flexible points system.. Whether I'm booking domestic or international If I have Delta Sky miles, is it technically possible to transfer Delta Sky Miles to other SkyTeam airlines reward miles club? If I have for example 100,000 Delta miles and joined Virgin, Korean Air or Flying Blue etc can I take half & turn those into 50000 (1 to 1 ratio) with the partner's mileage program? (Subtracting 50K from my Delta account?) Also are there more favorable conversion rates than 1:1? That seems to be what you are implying but I have never heard of it done in that way.
hello oak the way you explain all options for different airline is excellent excellent, if you can help me for any award flight from ewr to amd in india , which award flight is cheaper , since i have miles for capital one, united ,delta, american and british avios too thanks in advance.
Great video! Always want to see some domestic flight redemption using points and miles and here we are! Very clear about the steps and options, thank you!
I've been looking into a travel credit card and this helped me feel better about this as an option as I do fly domestic a bit more then international. But where is your Turkish miles and smile video? I would love to see how that works since it's noted often to be a pain.
I have tried to look for the exact flight you used on these transfer partners and they all say there are no available flights? Am i doing something wrong? It is not making much sense
So the tough part about booking award tickets is that award availability is very limited for most flights, and especially for popular services like JFK to LAX, it can sell out pretty quickly especially when say, someone is booking for 5 or 6 people, which could be the entire award quota for that flight (or even if that use case was someone that already watched this video lol). That being said, what can help is looking for one-way tickets and booking separately. What I would do is try out a different departure and arrival airport for your searches and see if you get results during the dates you are looking to travel, which should be at a minimum 3-4 months out. Hope that helps
Partner award availability can be really low and frustrating to find. You will have a much easier time when searching for flights serviced by that airline as opposed to a partner airline.
Also as seen in the video, even when there is partner award availability, the options can be pretty crappy/nonsensical. Who is realistically going to take a 17 hour journey when the direct flight is 6 ish hours?
Really liked your breakdown! It was super easy to follow. I am someone who’s been accumulating lots of points over the years and I want to start actually transferring them out for travel. Do you have any recommendations for flights from JFK to Korea? I have a good amount of Chase UR points, AMEX MR points, and capital one miles. I would appreciate any pointers! Thank you!
Glad to hear that. I'd say from JFK to ICN a simple, good value option would be transferring MR points to ANA which has a standard award chart with Economy at 60k and Business at 95k one way for that service.
You'll want to check different dates since award seating is pretty limited, but worst case you could just book on Capital One Travel or take that ZL1 out for a rip
Yeah I’m new to capital one venture x I mainly use chase points. What are your thoughts on seats aero? Is it worth it to use that? And yeah taking the ZLE is always an option but the venture x doesn’t have good hotel partners
Hi Oak! Can I ask you how long did you have to wait until youre able to upgrade from your Venture to Venture X? My husband is waiting for an upgrade but curious what was your scenario.
So I actually had my Venture card for about 5 years before they offered an upgrade but they didn't even have the Venture X when I first got my Venture. I did call to ask Capital One for a few months when I was thinking about upgrading and one morning it just showed up in my offers/upgrades section of the mobile app and I was able to do it then
@@realprofessoroak if possible, can you do one for flight to Asia? I really care ab transferring point to book flight to Asia, especially Vietnam and Philippines. please teach us the good way to redeem! point
Thank you for this video!!! Something to note is that Alaska Airlines isn't noted on your OneWorld graphic in the beginning of the video. As an Alaska cardholder, it's hard with them not being a points transfer partner for anyone!
You're right, and I do enjoy flying Alaska as well so it can be tough sometimes with it not being a transfer partner for a number of issuers, but it is nice that they are in the OneWorld alliance. Something I've found is that sometimes when searching for OneWorld redemptions for example with British Airways, when you search award flights, they are listed as American but actually serviced by Alaska. The contiguous US short-haul flight redemptions with Alaska can be pretty solid value too, I'll try to put together a video with some ways to utilize west coast award ticket services to include Alaska Airlines.
I'm a bit confused, how you referred to Alaska Airline when I thought we were looking to book on American Airlines in your first example. Sorry, I may have missed something.
Alaska and American are both part of the Oneworld alliance. So you might book a flight through American that's operated on Alaskan "metal" (an Alaska airlines airplane), but your ticket is with American.
Just some feedback, I feel like the editing tried a little too hard on this one. We don't need a ton of sound fx and stuff to get the point across. Great info and useful for me with my VX but it was just a bit distracting.

What about Southwest, Alaskan or Hawaiian?
