Amazing review! First one I see that actually highlights the difference between the aspect ratios and show the black bars. Turns out it is a big deal since im watching alot of anime/TV shows. Kudos
Thank you very much for the answers but i mean like if i take a video with 4k resolution from a Samsung s5 and i want it to play in the nexus 7, it wont open so i am not sure if the processor or gpu is not as powerful (1 gb ram/ Nvidia tegra) to handle it or the software can not fit the video in the screen.
great video and comparison.. I do have the shield tablet but a bit disappointed with the battery life.. Not sure if the Nexus 9 will do a much better job the price now here drops to USD340 for LTE model.
For those considering the Shield tablet, beware of ones with horrible wifi connectivity. I had to return mine twice because both constantly lost wifi connection. No matter what I did it still dropped. Added in with the horrible battery life, I couldn't stand it anymore. I've switched to the Nexus 9 and I got one from the 2nd batch with tactile buttons, no noticeable light bleed, and a reduced hollow back. Overall it's much better for me using it in school. It also feels nicer in the hand than the Shield tablet. The edges on the shield tablet were a little sharp and felt uncomfortable. What I do miss on the Shield tablet was the flip cover (DON'T spend full price on HTC's magic cover) and expandable memory.
how can you say that the Shield is better for movies? The picture size for widescreen video comes out to be about the same size and the Nexus 9 has better sound and color calibration. It should about how much picture there is, not the empty spaces around the picture..
Why? because there are other uses for a tablet than watching videos. But my point is that the experience is ultimately the same picture-wise for widescreen movies, so there is no logical reasoning in saying that the Shield provides a better movie watching experience than a Nexus 9.
mkygod Lol, bro. Do you know why people complain about bezels so much? Yeah. Ugly and distracting. You increase that by 3 or 4 when watching a movie on the nexus 9. Real nice experience..
its fine to complain about bezels, but bezels aren't the thing that you're looking at when you're watching a movie. The "movie watching experience" has nothing to do with how big the bezels are. My older 52"Samsung HDTV displays movies just as well as a 52" Samsung HDTV today which has much smaller bezels by comparison.
Hi Bazel. I would like to know which tablet has stronger/clearer/louder (not forced out audio on) speakers? I also heard the SHIELD tablet has washed out/grainy screen resolution. Is this true? And how about an update video for both as i heard both tablets now have Android 5.1 update. Thanks.
Its the CPU that is different not the GPU!! Its a 64 bit CPU vs a 32 bit CPU on the shield all those benchmark apps only support 32 bit so the nvidia will win every time till they update the apps to support 64 bit cpu's
Any sign of the cracking corners on your shield tablet yet? I'm considering it but this has been a very widely reported problem so is a concern for me...
The cracking of corners applied to earlier versions of shield, if it is an LTE version it will not have this issue as the material was improved for this model.
whats the charging like on both devices? are they like the shit n7 which takes soooooooooooo long to charge, or is it better to go with the Samsung pro?
I'd say the shield because it's cheaper and if you are in college you are broke lol JKJK. And also it has the stylus so you can hand write nicely. That's what I would choose.
Well... You're saying that the GPU in the N9 is "the daddy of all GPUs". But since the nVidia shield tablet has more emphasis on gaming, it's GPU is slightly over clocked (like the nVidia Shield Portable). So it'll win. That, plus a lower resolution means more performance.
Which one would you buy and why? Also, do you propose any alternative of near 300 euros with this or better power? (doesn't have to focus on games, i just want a complete tablet)
TheGlowey Thingy I appreciate the answers, but I was looking for reasons to buy one or the other. You can say the shield tablet, galaxy tab or 200 different options, but I need some reasons in order to buy one or another one. I see the shield tablet as a better option, but thank you anyway.
I'm in yr 11, (last year of high school) and collage is getting closer, I want a tablet that will last a while physically and spec wise, I like the more pure lollipop experience of the nexus but need bang for my buck... And buying the cheap nexus gets me 16 GB storage and no expandable... Is that enough or should I go for the shield?
No expandable SD card memory, backlight bleeds (read on Amazon that many people kept swapping out until they got a satisfactory unit), worse heat dissipation when gaming, higher cost, and 4:3 instead of 16:9 aspect ratio (personal preference) made me pass the Nexus 9 and go for the Shield tablet (more bang for the buck, IMO). If any of the above do not concern you, go for the N9. You get better color reproduction, better battery life, and newer, more powerful hardware inside.
which one would be good for me? I play alot of games which the nvidia has 16gb which I would get a 32 gb micro SD but I heard moving games on the micro sd doesn't move the whole game just some of the space and the nexus 9 has 32 gb so which one would be better?
I don't like how exposed the speakers are on the nexus 9 are compared to the nvidia shield. They get clogged easily and ruins the sound quality compared to the shield.
Its better not because of stupid stuff, its better because you get alot more connectivity, and GPU power and flexibility and expansion for memory for much less price tag.
the nexus 9 has dropped in price and i was wondering if it is still a good buy in 2016,I have had a Sony xperia tablet z since December of 2013 but it is starting to show its age please reply.🙏
I'm sick of video's where they take us around the device, we know there is going to be a camera on the back etc, gaming performance etc is more important
I own both the nvidia shield tablet and nexus 9 in my opion if you are looking for a tablet school i would not go with these tablets they are not practicle for school in my opion they are more for gaming, audio and media
This video was stupendous
Amazing review! First one I see that actually highlights the difference between the aspect ratios and show the black bars. Turns out it is a big deal since im watching alot of anime/TV shows. Kudos
Thank you..
That helped me make a decision!!
Excellent review, i would like to know if any of those tablets can play 4k videos cuz my nexus 7 can not
The human eye can't physically see the difference between 1080 p and 4k on that small of a screen
Alonso Mtz After 300 ppi the human eye can't pick up any increases in pixel density. Both the Nexus 9 and Nvidia shield are rocking around 283~ ppi.
Alonso Mtz tegra k1 supports 4k30 video playback
mi. ja. He said nexus 7 and tegra so I think he meant the tegra 3 from 2012 maybe? :)
You just got a new subscriber!!
Great review mate.I'm off to get my nexus 9 from currys.was not sure which one to get but your review made my mind up.thanks.
Great manners!

why would you want a 9" screen giving you the same "picture size" as an 8" I used to insta buy all nexus products but the ball was dropped on this one
Why? because there are other uses for a tablet than watching videos. But my point is that the experience is ultimately the same picture-wise for widescreen movies, so there is no logical reasoning in saying that the Shield provides a better movie watching experience than a Nexus 9.
mkygod so, you mean ? bigger is better ? lmao
mkygod Lol, bro. Do you know why people complain about bezels so much? Yeah. Ugly and distracting. You increase that by 3 or 4 when watching a movie on the nexus 9. Real nice experience..

They Both Use the same trype of CPU...
Shield has a Quad Core 2.2Ghz Tegra K1 But 32bi
Nexus 9 has a Dual Core 2.5Ghz Tegra k1, But 64 bit

Eric Rogers I don't have that money.. Shiit.
it was only for earlier versions, and if for some reason you get a defected one nvidia is replacing it free of charge, and even pays for your shipping
So if I get one now will it be a newer version? So no cracking?
Yes, current versions being shipped do not have this issue
whats the charging like on both devices? are they like the shit n7 which takes soooooooooooo long to charge, or is it better to go with the Samsung pro?
is it good for reading? or pdf? How is battery life on Nividia Shield???
For college students and for the purpose of taking notes ... which tab would be better ??
I'd say the shield because it's cheaper and if you are in college you are broke lol JKJK. And also it has the stylus so you can hand write nicely. That's what I would choose.
alright .. shield it is ..thanks !!
No problem
And as regards gaming can you recommend any bluetooth gaming controller for Android?
ps3 controller
@ Btekt: Sony Z3 compact tablet, nvidia Shield or nexus 9 for movies, storage, light browsing and ocassional gaming?
suxess619 Nvidia Shield for function and price - 32GB version specifically. The Z3 if you need a waterproof tab.
What is better for games?

I'm going for shield for Christmas
+Deathmaster103_Playz Minecraft Beware the chamfered edges of the tablet. They will chafe your skin off.
Did you get it?
Which one would you buy and why?
Also, do you propose any alternative of near 300 euros with this or better power? (doesn't have to focus on games, i just want a complete tablet)
Juan Segura We'd buy the Shield and all the accessories. 32GB Shield specifically.
Btekt Thanks for the answer :)
P.D: do you work for NVIDIA? Hahahahaha just joking.
Juan Segura Samsung galaxy tab s 8.4 or 10.5
TheGlowey Thingy I appreciate the answers, but I was looking for reasons to buy one or the other. You can say the shield tablet, galaxy tab or 200 different options, but I need some reasons in order to buy one or another one.

+keepercool98 the do your own damn research! Google is a click away wtf you lazy shit!

Jeff Martinez Really.

You didn't even talk about the stylus

the nvidia tablet has a 32gb model which is priced at $399

People never mention the resolution of the Shield...which is 1920x1200
he did, he said full HD. That is synonymous with 1080p
And how about battery life?
both have great battery life
I'm sick of video's where they take us around the device, we know there is going to be a camera on the back etc, gaming performance etc is more important
+Mike Seeds waste of 12 minutes
