What a great channel. I might as well suggest. Could you replicate Back to the Future 2's flying cars, as it was in '89? I know the really deep details of how they did it but I really wanna see the process in action.
Recreate the "Hell Sky" effect as seen in Ghostbusters and Childs Play. From memory the FX crew would put dye and flour into water and film it in slow motion then superimpose it on to the sky of the shot? Great video guys!
Hi there! I actually did this effect for "The Thing" back in 1982. I used a large fish tank to contain the smoke, instead of filling the room full of smoke (and chasing everyone out of the building). I did use garbage bag plastic, but I stretched it over a frame and positioned it with a c-stand. As you can see, the fire could get out of control and you don't want to attach it to a flat or something that could catch fire. Also, I remember using a 1K light for the source. I made the title with a cel and black paint and attached it to the back of the fish tank. -Pete Kuran
Mr Kuran!...so honoured to have you with us and comment on our video. Yes, we went about things in a fairly dubious way (before we invested in a Fishtank etc) but we did ensure that enough fire extinguishers were standing by! We are huge fans of your work and it is safe to say that you are one of a select few who have inspired us to create our TH-cam channel and celebrate some great practical effects, as well as hopefully inspire newer filmmakers to look at practical and in-camera solutions for their projects. Best wishes!
Hello Mr. Kuran. I love the effect of the title burning onto the screen. I was thinking of doing the same thing for the symbol of human transmutation from Fullmetal Alchemist, except using red lighting.
Are you actually fucking kidding me. atomcentral, one of the powerhouses of restored nuclear test footage on TH-cam, also did this effect on The Thing. What a small world.
I just saw your interview "I gave them a price that I thought would be too high... Yeah I was quarter of the price (of Cameron)" that made me laugh. Thank you so much for your art!
@@gg-qj3gc Personally I like the smell of Oleander and Mexican Elders. They're so good that afterwords I feel as though I had a near-death experience. Quite exquisite.
@@danem2215 I wasn't trying to imply it's okay to inhale wood smoke. I just thought at the time it was less dangerous than burning plastic. I have changed my comment accordingly.
What a great idea for a series. I see lots of movie shows talk about stuff like this, but its much more interesting to see people actually show you how its done.
This washed ashore on my TV feed due to the algorithm...I LOVE THIS!! When I was a kid I watched the Discovery Channel show "Movie Magic" religiously...this is like, the spiritual successor to it. YAAAY!
I had never even heard of your channel but seeing how you guys are dedicated to practical effects earned you a new subscriber. So many modern film tutorial channels are all about CGI now. It's great to see likeminded filmmakers dedicated to the art of practical.
Already one of my fav channel. Need more of special effects tutorial. It feelt like watching mythbusters back in the days but here we can recreate the effect :)
Great stuff. Can't wait to see what you produce in future. And as you asked for practical effect requests - the AT-ST walker head being crushed by logs (released by the Ewoks) from Return of the Jedi. If memory serves they metal coated the plastic model, used acid to eat away the plastic core leaving a perfect metal shell, then hit it with 2 model logs filled with lead. It crushed perfectly.
That's brilliant Nathan, glad our videos have helped! Make sure to check out our 'Volumetric Logos' video for more examples of how to create logos like this
You guys did an amazing job. I had tried to recreate this effect back in the 80s with a super 8 camera when I was a kid. I had read in Cinefantastique magazine about how it was done. My logo was just cut out of a piece of black matte board with a hobby knife. For smoke, I had a bunch of cigarettes poking through the lid of an empty tennis ball can, the other end of the can was taped to a hose of similar diameter. My friends
This channel is incredible. The Thing is one of my favorite films and John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. Y'all did fantastic work here. Keep it coming!
I waited for this first episode and I'm not disappointed. I already knew this effect, but it's always cool to see someone applying the technique. I can't wait for the next one because I'm work on a Science fiction/Horror short for Halloween and I need inspiration.
This is amazing. I have a short film I shot last year and I wanted to do this for the intro. At the time I couldn’t find a video explaining it well. Randomly decided to check today and found this video. So stoked. Thanks!
Just found this channel. HUGE SUPPORTER so far. Easily becomes one of my favorite TH-camrs! Would love to see items used in the description with future videos
Thanks Zach! Yes we will start including the kit and stuff we used in the descriptions. Keep an eye out as we'll no doubt be updating the descriptions soon :)
Great to see old style effects being done even if just for nostalgia - I had a longtime subscription seeing this kind of stuff in Cinefex but let it lapse in the 1990s when CGI started to take over.
Back lit graphics (rediscovered today digitally with the Stranger Things look) was how I made money as a college student in the mid-80's. Instead of vinyl stickers, you'd get a high resolution Kodalith negative film made from your black and white artwork, which was clear in the white area, solid black in the dark. Far nicer (more dense) than the digital transparencies you get today. For smoke effects we'd use a large aquarium between the camera and graphic, filled with smoke. I remember doing a "Bonanza" style burn through on some artwork for a local car dealership using very similar techniques!
I have never got the subscribe button so quickly on a channel i had never seen before. 1:11 in and I couldn’t help myself, this looks like amazing work
I was wondering how this was done. I saw this movie when it originally hit the theaters, but I was so intoxicated that, by the time the movie ended, I forgot a lot of what I saw. Hollywood was so creative back in the day. Not just this motion picture, but “Blade Runner”, too. I’m FAR more impressed with old-school special effects. Ray Harryhausen was the King of Hollywood when it came to stop motion animation; his movie magic was an art of its own. CGI doesn’t even come close.
This is so satisfying to me. I tried to do this about 20 years ago when I first heard this is how they did it. I was using a SD DV camera and it completely didn't work. ~Trav
This is brilliant! I love it. I think the most complimentary I can be is to say I have been a CG visual effects artist for nearly 30 years... and this channel and what you have all done is FANTASTIC. I love practical VFX, and now that we can augment them with computers, it truly is the best of both worlds. Since you asked for suggestions... How about the Raiders of the Lost Ark face melting of Toht from the climax of the film?
This technique is still being used. The Windows 10 Hero logo was basically a painted glass that they shot some light through. TH-cam has the behind-the-scenes video of how they made the logo titled "Windows 10 Hero Desktop Image - Behind the Scenes." Check it out!
I just subscribed to you guys at 18.9k subscribers. I hope I can come back to this comment one day when you reached a million. You are doing great stuff that deserves to be seen. Keep it up!

I’d love to see you guys recreate the terrifying intro to 80s CBBC programme Chocky th-cam.com/video/e3ztIDFU2P8/w-d-xo.html

I honestly love the second one, because the fire races up so quickly to reveal the “The” before the rest of it. Very cinematic.
i'd agree that second take was perfect. right up through the middle and then reveal the full word.
Thanks! Yeah we knew straight away when we saw it that it was a good take!

Thanks Anosh! And don't worry, there's plenty more where that came from :D
your character has an uncanny familiarity with so many actors I love it's very comforting
Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg morphed into one
Warning for everyone else out there: When burning plastics or wood, wear a respirator!
hmmm those healthy burning wood fumes. its a nature product cant be bad. gonna light another log in my room.
