    My sister lives off 49. We went to Coulterville, a working gold mining ghost town. You can still see the imprints of the gold miners boots impeded in the banks floor. Awesome place to visit in Mariposa County CA.

      Mariposa County is a literal goldmine (pardon the pun) for small towns and rich Californian history!

    What an interesting area! Who knew??? The hopes and dreams of the thousands who flocked to the area must have been so great. Peaks a person's curiosity to research the stories and history. Would you go back again to spend more time there? Thank you for a fascinating look at this area of California!

      Thanks! Yes I’m planning to go back to the area in a few weeks when I do US50. But maybe explore some of the other mining towns in the area. Such a beautiful and historic place!

      Yea right? I write and I usually do Chicago historical stuff, but I was thinking about writing about this era in a historical fiction sort of way. Seems more interesting than the "There Will be Blood" oil backstory.

    Ten years ago I took a tour of our Gold Country...starting in Nevada City all the way to Mariposa. I visited every museum, place of interest, and all the "Gold Rush towns" along the way. What a fantastic large chunk of California Gold history...lots to see and I highly recommend it! Go do it!

    Loved you video! I spent a lot of time in the "Gold Rush Country" as a kid.
    It was still fun to hear the story re-told.
    One minor detail "Placerville" is pronounced plasserville.
    Placer mining is the process of separating Gold from stream (alluvial) deposits,
    versus digging out of veins in the bedrock. "Hard rock" mining.
    The old mining town names that ending with "Bar" weren't talking about drinking establishments, but river "sand" bars with gold deposits.

    • @TravelwithaWiseguy
      @TravelwithaWiseguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and thanks for the correction on the pronunciation! I read a lot about that process in Coloma. Good stuff!

    Appropriate song for the video dear 😉 I'm so glad you got to get drone shots, such a pretty place. The life of a gold miner was hard, lonely and dangerous. I wonder if there's still gold to be found there. Always happy to see where you're exploring. Stay safe and GOD bless

    I knew Sutters Mill was in CA but never knew the exact location. Thanks to this video I have added another location to my bucket list. This year I traveled the Oregon Trail to WY, then the Mormon Trail to Salt Lake City, then California Trail to Lake Tahoe. I had no clue I was so close to Sutters Mill. In 2024 I plan to finish the Oregon Trail and ride down the California Coast (Gold Wing motorcycle) before returning home. I now know I will return home through Coloma which will be a nice way to wrap up my National Trails video series. THANKS !!!

    I remember playing there as a little boy and being able to wade across the American River . I have never seen so much water in that river! Great Great Grandpa Guillaume moved near there from Quebec in 1850. He made a fortune in gold selling supplies, buried it, told no one where it was including his wife, and died of a broken neck from an accident on his horse. In his deathbed, he pointed at a hill nearby but nobody found the gold. At least, nobody admitted it.

    Such a beautiful area. I was surprised by some of the newer buildings. Such as the the one built in 1949, I believe it was the post office. Were those newer buildings built to fit the theme of the area? Or were they still building that way in the middle of the 20th century? That area definitely isn't what I envisioned as present day California. This is rural enough for an old Iowa farm boy to be able to feel at home!
    Thanks for another wonderful trip! Leaving the heartland for this one was sort of a change up, but that was good
    Still had that small town and rural area feel.

    • @TravelwithaWiseguy
      @TravelwithaWiseguy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s a good question. 1949 is still pretty old so it’s possible that was for it’s time. And the town may have been even smaller back then. California has a lot of rural areas that people wouldn’t think of being in California!

    • @ronfullerton3162
      @ronfullerton3162 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TravelwithaWiseguy Hey! Things that originated in 1949 aren't old! Ha ha ha ha. That's my birth year. It just caught me off guard that looked like that for a 1949 build. I guess that I do not look like a recent build also! Thank you for both the reply and the great trip by video. I will be out at the end of the drive waiting for the next road trip!
