- First of all, a special thanks to my bus driver for allowing me to record this video.
Yesterday, our usual 2005 Blue Bird Vision, 1607, was taken out for the day to replace the DVR for the camera system and move and remount a first aid kit that was obstructing one of the cameras. My bus driver was given 1408 for the day.
Bus 1408 is a 2006 Blue Bird All American FE with a Caterpillar C7 engine and air brakes, just like 1607. This is one out of four air brake buses owned by the yard. The other 96 or so are hydraulic brake. One of the reasons my driver was given this bus for today is because she is one of the few drivers for this branch of the company that is air brake certified, and the driver that usually is in this bus took the day off or something. Chances are they were low on spares with hydro brakes. This bus features a yellow roof, gray seats, outward-opening air door (air doors are not common with this fleet), intercom/radio entertainment system, incandescent lights, strobing LED stop arm, an 8 lamp Doran exterior light monitor, and a Kenwood NEXEDGE NX-800H two-way radio transceiver, same radio I own and the same radio that many of these buses use. Interestingly, this bus also has 3 fans on it. Never seen that before.
I liked this bus for the most part, but it was a pain for my driver. Even the driver that usually drives this bus thinks it sucks. It was certainly very rattly, especially when the engine was idling, and obviously very loud. This was the first time I had ridden in a flat nose since probably the 5th grade. The last one I would have ridden on was an AmTran/International RE. This will have probably also been the last flat nose I'll ever ride on in my school career, unless I buy one for myself down the road when I'm out of my own.
This bus, according to the 10 year policy, has one school year left before it must be taken out of service.
As of the 2016-17 school year, we do not have this bus on the fleet anymore. It seems to have disappeared over the summer when the West Chicago yard was closed and the buses moved to Carol Stream. I now ride a Bluebird T3FE, we just got the bus a few days ago. Before that, I rode a Thomas Built Buses.
Wow, we still have buses manufactured in 2000 that are still on regular routes, it's weird just to think that the buses I grew up on are already being pushed to the wayside in some fleets. In our other fleet, we still have two 1997 TC2000s on the road until just this year, and two 98s that are on routes still. those things just don't die lol

I ride a 2019 T3RE Bluebird All American, just without the LED lights for the most part.
3 defroster fans its odd for a school the two at the windshield are Bergstroms and the one above the driver's head is a Baader Brown. as Blue Bird of the mid 2000s era on the vision and All American FE they used the Cat C7 ACERT same displacement as the CAT 3126. today Blue Bird in the diesel vision uses a Cummins ISB 6.7 Cummins 5.0l V8 the same engine used in the Nissan Titan pickup, the gasoline and propane visions today uses a Ford triton V10 roush clean tec engine. the All American FE uses the Cummins ISB 6.7L as that engine is found on the RAM full size pickup and Navistar international now has this Cummins ISB 6.7l on all of its new IC conventional busses and all of its durastar medium duty truck chassis. if you don't have the bus in the district anymore could be retired as there is a age limit some districts operate busses like 12 years. Here in my state of Westeren Pennsylvania the retired schoolbusses from contractors go to 422 sales as they primarly get auctioned off for export outside the USA to Africa, latin America for school use but mainly are converted into chicken busses in their own paint style and decor. they are common in Guatemala

nice, I used to ride one, the suspension was nice (as in not too soft!), the driver uses the service brake at stops.

I had a 2005 as a spare In middle school in 2014 It had a Cat C7 dual strobing air stop arms air operated jack knife door and it had low back seats And It Was Indiana Spec

It's been a long time since I've ridden in a school bus! Not since 8th grade, so 4 years. Interesting how your district will pull them out after 10 years. In terms of a school bus that's not really very long.

+caleb schnur The radio installation on this particular one is very sloppy. You can tell there's a little issue with the cords and the visor, and my driver couldn't even reach the radio buttons or microphone. I would have put the radio and microphone on the dash.
I ride a 2005 AA FE too but mine has a speaker for the dispatch radio over the monitor board to there is no monitor unfortunately. Also, it has a different engine. I most likely won't get the audio in and we have cameras on my bus so I can't get a video in bye the 13th of June which I guess is my last opportunity to ride it. I'm switching schools so now so I guess next year it will most likely be an hdx, c2, or a 2012 Thomas EFX.My district is selling most of the fleet now that we're outsourcing from First Student. My bus Driver said they'll sell the bus when she retires in 2 or 3 years. The oldest bus I've seen from my district is a 1990 AA FE.

The All American as some componets were carried over from the BlueBird TC2000 when Bluebird dropped it in 2002 it first started with the Cummins 5.9L diesel with VP44 injection pump. then 2003 it went to the Cat 3126 and 2004 along with the BlueBird Vision have the Cat C7 ACERT from 2006 to today they are powered by the Cummins ISB 6.7l while the VIsion has a propane option a GM vortec 8.1 502 cubic inch big block chevy engine as today they are powered by the Ford Roush Cleantec Triton V10 and the newly released gasoline powered vision has the same Triton V10 engine. as engines, transmissions and floorplans for the busses vary by school district and bus companies for what they order. this bus its weird having Three defroster fans two Bergstrom fans and one Baader Brown fan above the driver whe ni was in school i rode a variety of busses the TC2000 mainly when BlueBird introduced it in 1989 powered by a Chevrolet 427 big block engine as most were powered by a Cummins 6bt when the engine became standard in 1995 up to 1992 the 12 valve 6bt has a Bosch VE injection pump from 1992-1998 the engine had a Bosch P1700 injection pump when the Cummins 24 valve was introduced in mid 1998. and it remained the engine till BlueBird dropped the TC2000 and consolidated its Type D bus lineup to its All American as the All American FE has since been redesigned but it still kept its current Cummins ISB 6.7 L

I'm not really a fan of BlueBirds.... But nice video anyways, LOL.My district has a rule where they don't want buses over 3 years old on public runs..Well, either that has gone by the wayside or they don't care, because our 12's hit four years this year and our 11's hit five. We also have 09 Chevy Microbirds and Ford E350 passenger vans that have outrageous miles on them... But they're still running.

I remember when I started riding school buses back in 2005, they were blue bird busses but they were obviously from the 90s because they had brown seats and you had to manually pull open the doors with that handle. Then they got new busses when I was in like 2nd grade and they haven't changed them since lmao

If Illinois Central doesn't get the contract for my district for next year, maybe any other district they drive will let them use it longer. My daily bus, 1607, being a 2005, only has until the end of this year before it must be taken out, unless they can work out some kind of a deal, and that's what my driver is hoping for.
