- Yesterday I came to www.regiepianos.com to chose the piano for my upcoming recital at Salle Gaveau in Paris, (May 21 2014) www.sallegaveau.com/la-saison/...
Regie Pianos have amazing collection of concert grands for rent ( no Imperial though, sigh ). I tried something like 5 Steinways, one better than another.....UNTIL...I came to this piano, demurely standing separately from the others. I asked about it and was told that this is a unique instrument they are very proud of - but, the story goes , nobody dares to rent it - pianists unable to handle this 'beast" LOL . I tried - and my heart just melted. The quick recording doesn't do it justice. You MUST try to come to the concert to hear how Chopin's beloved piano sounds in Chopin's beloved city :) But this piano can handle not only Chopin but anything from Bach and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Nyman :-)

Quite amazing. You are somewhat eccentric, but have a wonderful imagination. I believe you are attracted to this piano because it puts you in direct contact with great pianists from the past and allows you to fantasize with their spirits.. For an antique it plays very nicely. You do it justice.
This is a really nice sounding piano :) I only wish I knew enough about music to win the quiz, but I couldn't come anyway :P

Absolutely gorgeous piano! The instrument has a truly deep and rich sound. :-) This is surely a far upgrade over the piano you played on in your recital in Lowell, MA a couple of years ago. If you are interested in some really nice pianos, visit the Frederick Collection in Ashburnham. You can play instruments of this vintage and much older.
I had no idea there were still any usable Pleyels around. Next you'll tell us you will be using an Erard or found a working Cristofori that aren't museum pieces.

I wish I could try out this piano. It sounds absolutely nothing like the tired old Steinways you hear everywhere. I know this one is much newer than what Chopin played, but it definitely reminds me of what I heard from videos of the restored instrument. Of course, given this instrument's reputation for being not for the lighthearted, I probably wouldn't be able to make it sound nearly as good.
And my god, through my headphones, the bass on this instrument sounds amazing.

How lovely to hear Valentina play on a straight strung piano, rather than the modern cross-strung ones. The colours she produces are amazing!
It is''nt straight strung it is cross-strung (although it shure sounds like it !) you can see that from 3,32. Nevertheless a very fine instrument. Absolute top quality with a very clear and open sound. Ideal for romantic music of the nineteenth century wether its Beethoven Schubert Chopin Schumann Lizst or Brahms or even Rachmaninoff. You will be able to hear all the notes in the score !
my very humble opinion, is that the sound of concert pianos are for large audiences. Pianos with silvery sound like pleyel are closer to an intimate state of the tracks. Touched with hands as sensitive as yours is a journey to the time where they were written much of it ... I'm a fan of the sound that has the Pleyel Pianino so I am biased ;). (Sorry, google translated me)

A Pleyel Piano, there were greatly admired by Mozart. I agree this piano has a most beautiful sound. It is so even across the whole instrument. Of course it is so beautifully played also which does make a difference. Valentina would probably make a bad instrument so good. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity to hear a grand Pleyel even once.

Thanks for the correction. Perhaps you have an idea of what I might vaguely be thinking of.
Chopin had a pleyel piano.
Wow, I came across your recording of the Tempest sonata and was greatly moved by the beauty of the piano and how you so clearly were in partnership with it. I saw that it is a Pleyel, now sadly defunct. Now, I get to hear the story behind you playing it! It delights me how you came upon it after trying Steinways..... The modern piano has become too - as they say - in your face for my taste. Thanks for this! I have a friend near Toulouse who has a 1911 Gaveau upright and I encouraged him to have it restored. The structure and soundboard were still perfect and I am not sure that anything of comparable quality is available now given the lack of quality woods. It is finished and he is delighted, I cannot wait to visit and try it. We named the piano Gertrude, a suitable name for an Edwardian lady of impeccable quality, manners and taste!

No! Please say Pleyel is not gone.
I am afraid so. There was an attempt to rescue it but it would have been a brand rather than a manufacturer. Google Pleyel and you will get the whole story, if you can stand it.

I gave up the quiz after I couldn't identify even the first piece. I did recognize the three movements of Beethoven's Tempest, Rachmaninoff Prelude Op 32 No. 12, and Chopin's etudes Op. 10 No. 3 and 12.

Why did this piano frighten others - was it because Pleyel is so seldom heard in concert halls? I like its response to your touch. And I like your dress-code :)
The bass is very responsive in Busoni's dramatic "orchestration" of The Chaconne. Thanks for sharing - you are such an inspiration! :)
Though this instruments lacks a wee bit of the "jewel-like" timbre of Ms Lisitsa's Imperial, it has another quality quite unlike the usual Steinway. Perhaps it's the acoustics of the room, or as was mentioned the "throw" of the sound farther out, but at times it almost sounds as if octaves and chords are "doubled." Perhaps the way it is tuned? As such, I found myself thinking that even the Rachmaninoff, in TONE sounded a BIT like Chopin. I would imagine the Schumann Fantasiestucke for Piano would sound gloriously immediate, due to the sage of this piano.
Point of information: many pianos GET BETTER with age, especially Steinways, IF they are properly maintained.
BTW, it's a WONDERFUL program (if the video reflects that), and I envy all who will have the opportunity to see this program and Ms Lisitsa live.

I am a guitar player and quickly recognized the Bach Chaconne. I was looking for a Chopin piece played by guitarist Tony McAline when I saw a TH-cam of you playing the same piece. I am now a fan! Saw your Abby Road Piece and will be ordering that for sure you looked like you were having so much fun! One question, you mentioned an older piano- 7 years and it had a dead sound board, some classical guitars take a while to open up, violins ? But do concert pianos get better with age or worse assuming they were built right and with choice woods? I ask because there is a 1957 Bosendorf grand that I can get at a good price!

We used to have a Pleyel 280 (I think) from Georg Pfeifer ( Uncle to my Great Grandfather M.V.Green) period In my Grandfather New York City house. Great voicing esp in the Middle 24 notes ( Human voicing). Sorry, I do not know why you would like the B. 290 over the Pleyel 280?

I can play it well and I'm so glad. But I'm struggling for ages with pathetique mov 1... is it that hard? And I've played it so many times that there's no spontaniety just mechanic all over again.... is Pathetique mov 1 much harder than tempest mov 3? :(

no. If I may give you my opinion, just leave that beautiful pathetique for a while 'til you almost forget it. And when going back to it you fingers will remember all of it without the need of your memory/mind and then you will have the joy to play it with your soul only.

A friends told me about a street piano in a Canadian town, and I referred her to Val's site on TH-cam so she could hear someone playing street pianos. Next thing I know I'm listening to those videos straight through -- they reminded me of the pianos I grew up playing. And the beauty of the music still came through. Val can make even a terrible piano sound good.
But I hasten to add that this is an excellent piano!

Valentina, I am curious as to why you chose this piano. "Beast" doesn't help this tech to understand how a particular piano attracts you. Repetition/regulation looks and sounds good on this recording..also there are punchings on the tuning pins - reminders for...? Thank you Valentina.

Why the Pleyel piano for the concert? Is it because of the softer intonation? A Steinway or a Bösendorfer are much harder in the Modulation.

Bach's partita no 2 d minor chaconne. originally for violin (: there's some edition's for left hand solo( more true to violin but 2 hand arrangement is fantastic).
It would have been difficult giving this one back to the owners!

I love the thundering bass and the bright almost over the top treble of this piano, certainly not the smooth sound of a modern Steinway. The sound is apparent even on a good set of computer speakers. I love all your videos of great pianos... even those on discarded street pianos.
WJE37FCSM PS... Just listened to your new TH-cam Chaconne on the Steinway and now the Pleyel. The difference in sound is almost shocking, almost like listening to a keyboard tuned to a non-well-tempered system. It promises to make your Gaveau recital exciting.
