Always wanted to try my hand at it but didn’t want to spend too much money, a lot of companies trying to sell carving cement at higher prices. After a over a year of being interested I can finally try it out for next to nothing. Thanks so much.
Unfortunately, I put him too close to the sidewalk in front of my house, and someone stole it. I was on a major route between the downtown bars and the university, so I should have known better. I've moved since then, and I keep thinking about making another one. I miss that little guy! 😊
Heave never done anything like this but you make it seem so effortless, though I am sure it is not! I do enjoy many types of crafting but my main focus for the past few years has been decorative painting. I would absolutely love to do something like this even though it will probably end up looking like a lump of cement!! I really love this guy's expression! His personality really shines though! Thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial! Looking forward to more!! Really enjoyed your tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!!
Thanks, Mary. I guess someone else liked his expression, too, because I put him out in my front yard and someone stole him. One of these days I need to make another one - it was a lot of fun to make. And concrete is pretty cheap, so you can afford to make some learning mistakes.
I love your video! When I saw the face I knew I had to watch and see how you did it. You are very good at showing and explaining how you do everything and I greatly appreciate you sharing with us!

The products in this mix are hard to find in reasonably small quantities here in the US, unless you shop online. This was a really fun project - now that you've reminded me, I may have to make some more. 😊
Hi. I'm really delighted with your videos. You are an excellent and charming teacher. I love to know and do most everything related to crafts. Thank you very much for everything you taught us to do, in your videos, tips and links.
Thank you so much!!! I absolutely and totally loved watching this video!!! I have been looking for someone who makes cement sculpture for a long time. I make cement jewelry and am branching out into the garden art. Thanks again.
It was just fine, until someone stole this guy out of my front yard. I've used it for other sculptures, too, and it holds up well. The formula was created by an expert in concrete sculpture, so I trust his formulas.
@@UltimatePaperMache the acrylic latex house paint is a good substitute for the polymer then? Also, when I talked to a guy who works at a concrete place recently I asked if aluminum wire was good for armatures, and he was very adamant about not using aluminum because of some chemical reaction. This might be the case with aluminum foil too. Do you have a source for reasonably prices metakaolin and/or marble dust/sand?
@@edwardmurray2284 Hi Edward. I just played around with the cement for a short time, so I don't know where you can get the metakaolin in reasonably sized quantities at a reasonable price. I did find some calcium carbonate (what artists call marble dust) at a company that sells bulk food products and garden supplies. Their shipping process is a little strange but their prices are great. You can find it here: www.azurestandard.com/shop/product/outdoor-garden/gardening-supplies/fertilizers-soil-care/calcium/calcium-carbonate-powder-ag-h2o/6910
This is so cool! I found a head in my mom's garden 4 years ago and she doesn't know where it came from. I just found a product called Decorations concrete, it is a product that is made for modelling and you just add fibres. I am going to make one.

This is great (I so wanted to see the finished piece) It's adorable. Have you ever tried making a garden pot with a face on it~ I sure would love to see that. You put a plant in the pot it looks like hair. You are an amazing artist!!!
My father made a lot of pots with faces - he calls them pot-heads. :) I even made a sculpture that he used as a mold for one of his pot-heads. I had to make a paper mache version so it would be light enough to mail. You can see it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-head-maybe My dad's wife is an amazingly accomplished gardener, and she's filled his pots with a wide variety of plants. They all look lovely. So now I must ask - have you made any pot-heads yourself?

You need smaller gloves. I find using marigold glove (washing up gloves) they are much thicker and last a wee bit longer than latex gloves, or you can use builder's waterproof gloves, which are great when handling cement etc. Love all your video's, l just wish they were longer xxx
Which product is it that gives that smooth look? I have been doing hypertufa and using various recipes tying to make my mix more smooth and have gotten really frustrated with the end result. Any help? Thanks!
This is a special concrete mix, not hypertufa. I used the "mesh" recipe on this page: www.makersgallery.com/concrete/howto1b.html It was expensive to gather all the ingredients, because some of them only come in 50 pound bags. I've decided that I'm going to use epoxy clay from now on for my outdoor projects, just because I'm too wimpy to cart all those heavy bags around. But there are a few people on etsy.com who sell small amounts of the ingredients, for people who make concrete jewelry.
Thanks for a great video. Did this recipe stand the test of time? Would you still recommend it or any tweaks to suggest? I've spent massive time researching sculpture possibilities & with thought & prayer believe I am going to do some projects I have on my list trying cement/ concrete & give this a try. What do you think of adding a cement drenched jute or burlap bottom layer first? I saw one sculptor who works with cement who says you can add additional super plasticizer to the cement if it is starting to dry too much, which will free even more water from within the cement/ concrete mix, to give a bit more time to work with what you have mixed.
This was not my recipe, but the fellow who came up with it tested it, and he's a concrete expert. Sadly, I can't tell you how long this face lasted, because someone stole it out of my front yard. 😕 And I'm not a cement expert, so I recommend following the guidance of someone who knows a lot more about it than I do. Have fun!
Oops - thanks for letting me know the link didn't work. I fixed it, so you can now find the list of ingredients here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/make-a-ferrocement-stone-face Suppliers change their links too, of course, but with the names of the products you should be able to find them. good luck!
Hi, I love your channel you are so talented! I love creating sculpture in concrete so this intrigues me, have you heard of Pal-Tiya Premium sadly it is so expensive any idea what they have in their mixture?
There are several guest posts on my website showing how to use Pal-Tiya, but I haven't tried it yet. I think Portland cement is part of it, but there's something else that makes it work so beautifully and I have no idea what that is. If it does have Portland cement in it, I wish they would just sell the other stuff that's in the mix so we could buy the heavy cement at our local store. That would cut down on shipping costs a lot. Did you try the mixture that I used in this video? It was kind of expensive to gather all the stuff together, but it worked really well.
@@UltimatePaperMache I agree with that would be great to just sell the other mix, no I have not tried it just because of its hefty price.. I even wrote to them to please sell via Amazon US so that I can get free shipping via my Prime subscription. Thank you for your response, be well and stay safe.

Hi it's me again, I seem to be having a problem with the second mortar mix. I followed the directions exactly, but what I seem to have come up with is something close to silly putty. At first it spread on so nice and then I noticed that it hardened super fast, like 1 to 2 mins. and then it would do this very slow crawl down the side of my piece. I mixed it in very small batches, since I didn't want to waste any and I'm glad I did. I was wondering if the problem is the super plasticizer, I put a cap full, but I was wondering if I put too much in. They sent me the super plasticizer in a small soda bottle, so the cap isn't very large.
I tried less than a half a cap and it was wonderful. I imagine it is a trial and error for most of us, since we all are going to do our own version of 9 parts to one part ratio. So now we know how to make silly putty! The stuff even snapped off like the old silly putty did, it was strange stuff. Thank you
It looks amazing! I kept waiting for you to blend the eye ridges into the face a little bit more, and you never did... I don't have sculpting ability, but I have been wanting to make apple head dolls... have you ever carved apple heads b 4? ♡
