    Summary of lecture:
    1. Inculcate fear of Allah from a young age
    2. Stop micromanaging
    3. Stop reprimanding(putting them down and making them feel guilty instead appreciate )
    4. Allow them to make mistakes and learn from them(ask them what they would do if they were in your place as a punishment). Be a life coach.
    5. Your cannot make them feel empowered by giving them gifts or spoiling them. Let them earn it. It gives them self dignity.
    6. Allow them to understand that they are part of bigger picture(family, society, etc.). Encourage them to come to family gatherings, functions.
    7. Find a mentor other than parents. A positive role model.

      4. Punishment must be done if required but need to sit down and involve them on the discussion

      Generic advice
      1. Make ourself a good role model
      2. Constantly made doa to our children. Full of barakah.

Asking the young adult what they would do if they were the parent to prevent the same act or mistake and find ways of compensation is a window toward compassion and understanding for both sides. A mentor is very important for teens who are are isolated.

Having 3 young adults now, I can relate to many items that Sheikh Yasir elaborated on. However few of many qualities as parents we must have are patience, persistence, positivity and unconditional love regardless of your prevalent personal condition especially at the sliver of time you may have with your family. These qualities are super easy to say or type in but equally super difficult if not more so, to put to practise in all conditions you and young adult may be in. As a parent, I failed many times to control myself plus any and all excuses are useless other than to submit to Allah that we are not perfect while continue to learn and cognizant of consequences of our words/actions.

Excellent advice for all parents no matter the age of your kids. Only thing I’d like to add to the first point Sheikh made: yes we need to make sure our kids have a fear of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’aala, however we need to be careful to balance it with Allah’s Mercy, Love and Forgiveness. Several of my own family members have left Islam (as adults) after a childhood filled with fear and believing Allah hates them and will never forgive them for any sins because our parents (may Allah forgive them) never once mentioned these beautiful attributes of Allah SwT. So they feel they have no reason to belong to a religion that (in their mind) condemns them to hell. Please make dua for their hidaya (guidance) and please teach your kids that Allah loves and forgives and is the Most Merciful. And don’t forget to tell your kids you love them and respect them too, especially fathers to your daughters. Otherwise they might find someone else to “love” them instead, so please remind them, and show them they are valued as children and as adults. Salaam.

Mashallah Shaikh. I think I am guilty of a few points there. Even though we always hugs and say we love our children to them personally but we need to do more to improve. I totally agree that our children even though they are lack of nothing, they still falls into depression. May Allah answer the Doa of all parents including us. Amin.

The no.1 reason of depression in kids is free time, they're not doing stuff. Nothing to do gives you time to mourn over little things and get depressed easily. Back then people were physically active and doing hard work, their days were busy making something useful out of life. That's the main reason.

Jazakallahu khayran shaykh, the part where you say those words representing parents really hit deep. Even though I know that my parents love me, but still hearing it is something else. I am not close to my parents, but nor are we in bad terms. Imagine with someone that are much more distant than their parents hearing it.
I tried searching for the quote that was mentioned from Saidina Ali ibn Abi Talib because I wanted to share it, but I've found that the words are not from sahaba nor tabi'un. Similar quote is from Greek philosophy.

I cant even imagine how the muslims would prosper if the lessons learned from this speech were implimented , although i have to say do not praise your child too much because that creates one of the most hateful traits , arrogance and ignorance , but then again do not give too little praise aswell .
