  • A bicycle ride in the Mackenzie Avenue protected bike lane in Ottawa, ON (May 2024). Highlights include a two-way protected bike lane, bicycle signal lights, bike racks, and connections to the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway and the Alexandra Bridge.
Our ride begins on the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway with a view of the Parliament Buildings in the distance. Next we enter a two-way protected bike lane on Colonel by Drive and ride behind the Senate of Canada Building. At the fork in the road, we continue left and begin our ride on the Mackenzie Avenue protected bike lane.
As we approach the intersection of Mackenzie Avenue and Rideau Street we see an OC Transpo articulated bus pass by and the Fairmont Château Laurier and Peace Tower on the left. Continuing further along Mackenzie Avenue we eventually reach one of the most protected stretches of bike lane I have ever seen. This is in place to protect The Embassy of the United States of America, but doubles as a protected bike lane. As we approach the next intersection we see the Peacekeeping Monument on the right and the National Gallery of Canada straight ahead. Next we turn left and head westbound on the Murray Street raised cycle track. At this point you can continue riding towards the Alexandra Bridge, turn right to access the National Gallery of Canada or turn left to access Major's Hill Park.
Next, we turn around and head back towards the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway. This time we start our ride from the National Gallery of Canada and ride under the Maman sculpture to explore a connection to the Mackenzie Avenue protected bike lane.
Length of bike ride: 800 m (each way)
