A bicycle ride on several protected bike lanes in Bergen, Norway (September 2023). Highlights include two-way protected bike lanes with a separate pathway for pedestrians, a two-way raised cycle track, a bicycle and pedestrian friendly roundabout, protected intersections, bicycle signal lights, wayfinding and the entrance to the world's longest purpose built bicycle tunnel (Fyllingsdalstunnelen).
Our ride begins by heading North on a two-way protected bike lane along Lungegårdskaien with Bergen busstasjon in the distance. This two-way protected bike lane and pedestrian pathway continued to the South of the city by quite a distance. We then make a left turn and see several bicycle signal lights and wayfinding signs as we get closer to downtown Bergen.
Next we explore Lars Hilles Gate which has a one way bike lane on the East side of the street and a two-way raised cycle track on the West side of the street. This street also includes wayfinding signs, bicycle signal lights, bike parking, seating and a 30 km/h speed limit. We ride the two-way raised cycle track in both directions. The Southbound ride takes us back to where we initially turned onto Lars Hilles Gate. The Northbound ride takes us all the way to Strømgaten where we see Bergen Nasjonale Opera and the Kode Art Museum.
The next clip takes us South to Kanalveien where we ride around a bicycle and pedestrian friendly roundabout. The design includes clearly marked crossings, good visibility and wayfinding signs.
The last clip is of another two-way protected bike lane along Kanalveien. This bike lane provides access to the Kristianborg light rail station and the world's longest purpose built bicycle tunnel (Fyllingsdalstunnelen).
