Damn so short, I was hoping for at least 60 minutes - nothing left on Netflix to watch after 9 months of lockdown!! They should offer you a contract. Actually you should speak to Attenborough about a job - your talent is being wasted... You are not being fully utilised - may be a better way of putting it. Great work.

So Mark, why did you abandon the D850? With the Canon, there were many images where small highlights were blown, some in only one color like at 1:55 and then all 3 channels @ 5:50 on both the Mullet and Osprey. One thing about the Nikon, metering for Highlight protection.

    • @ronaldstochl1866

@@19Photographer76 I think that the point of his video was merely emphasis on focusing capabilities & not necessarily exposure at that time. The R5 has very good dynamic range & when adjusted with highlights in mind and does protect against blown highlights very well - if needed, lifting the shadows reveals very good results - I own an R5 and have no problem with blown highlights at all. This is not a knock on the D850 which is an excellent camera .. just saying the R5 is also an excellent choice (except if you are heavy into long run videos !!).

When I go to buy equipment I intend to stop by your village to do a workshop with you and capture those beautiful eagles of yours; What would be the best time of year to see them? How is the viewfinder in tracking AF / continous shooting, compared to the A9? I saw a video from the viewfinder where it looked very choppy/laggy, although some say there is no lag at all (like the A9). I would appreciate if you could clarify how it behaves. Thanks!

    • @MarkSmithphotography
      @MarkSmithphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is different than the a9 but it isn’t bad at all. I don’t notice any lag or jerkyness. It is my understanding that the videos that show the viewfinder point of view have to be shot with the photographer using the rear screen which would definitely make the captured footage very shaky.

The lens is not a little overpriced. It is massively overpriced! I prefer the EF 100-400 II since it is cheaper and performs slightly better in bad light. Or so Jeff Cable says. I live in South-West Norway and that means that I have to consider more how a lens reacts to bad light than anybody who lives further South.
I have an R6 and basically used the Setup suggestion from Jan Wegener who owns two R5s. He might be useful as a contrast to your view of Sony since he seems to favour Canon. I think that most of my photography problems occur immediately behind the viewfinder.
The double back focus buttons that Canon allows are pretty wonderful. I also have a similar setup on a 7D2.

As a bird photographer who has big Canon glass I much prefer the Sony 200-600 mm, especially at its price point. I would advise someone new to bird photography to go Sony just for that lens as long as it is not too heavy. The Sony @ 4.7 lbs. is very light to me but considering how many people in the bird shooting hobby are older, that lens may weigh too much. If you consider the 100-500 mm Canon as light, nearly all-purpose lens which can shoot limited macrophotography, aperture limited portraits, some landscape, and also birds in a carry around size the value proposition is much different, especially for non-professionals. Creating a 5:1 zoom is much more difficult than creating a 3:1 zoom. Pair the Canon lens with a single 24-105 mm f4 lens and you have a a two lens kit which is extremely versatile and can be easily carried in a backpack. Having a 100- 400 MM IS II, I have thus far resisted the 100-500 mm. The fact that it is not backward compatible with my DSLR cameras would prevent me from selling the 100-400mm lens so I could get the RF 100-500mm. As of 12/27/2022 the lens is currently $ 200 off but think that may put it back to its introductory price. If money were no object, it would be a no brainer to get this lens to carry with a second camera along with a 500 or 600 mm f4 with a teleconverter. In regards to the R5 locking up, I also had that problem frequently when using a Canon brand battery grip. A large percentage of my personal lock up issues were because I was worried about overtightening the grip and it would become loose. I still get a lock-up about once every three times out in extended shooting.

Great preliminary review on the R5 and RF 100-500mm! Based on your comments so far, it is pretty much inline with my perception. Let's talk about the lens first. I am probably more critical about it than you. My biggest issue with it is that it is an external zone. All RF zooms going forward will be external zooms because Canon wants to go with that new compact and stubby design language. With that it comes with some default issues with the external zoom design. The fact that so much of the lens is retracted, it just means the throw is extra long which cannot be helped. Is no different to other external zoom designs like the Sigma 150-600mm or Tamron 150-600mm. On my Sigma, it will take 4 turns for me to get from 150mm to 600mm which is a huge issue when you are shooting BIF. Then, you compare that to the Sony FE 200-600mm, an internal zoom design, a 90 degrees turn will get you from 200mm to 600mm, there is just no comparison to be had. Then, you add on the fact that it is 100mm shorter than all its competitors with the exception of Nikon, it just isn't a great package in my book. Last but not least, price point, which you mentioned too. Over here on my end, it is more than US$1.2K more expensive than the Sony FE 200-600mm. That to me is a bit of a rip-off I am afraid. My problem is I am an amateur and I am only shooting with zooms at the moment, I would feel forced into buying the RF 100-500mm if I went with the R5. But, if you shoot primes which you do, then the R5 could be a great option because it will have so many telephoto primes for you to choose from either by using an adapter with the current EF line-up or the coming RF options.
As for the R5, I expected it to be good. You didn't actually say whether it was better than the Sonys, I suspect you will have a better idea further down the road with more testing. My guess is you might like it more than the A9 and the A7R IV. And why do I say that? Well, if you think about it, the R5 is kind of like a higher res version of the A9 if you will which pretty much all A9 shooters have been asking for. But, there are more Sony bodies coming next year, at the very least the A9 III if not the A7R V too. For me, coming off an APS-C body, ideally I really don't want to lose reach, so I would either go with the A7R IV or A9 III (rumored to have a 50 MP sensor) or A7R V pending on what the final specs are and shooting it in APS-C mode to make use of the 1.5x crop factor. Or if I were to go with Canon, then I might consider the high res version of the R5 when it comes out.

Hi dear Mark. As I am watching the video (congrats for your channel) was making you a question in my head and suddenly I have found that question in one of the images in the video. Do you or anyone know the reason (source) of those strange creases (like stains) we sometimes find on sky? (painful for us that shoot so many birds in flight). I started appreciating it on images uploaded to my flickr gallery. It doesn´t always happen and have found it to be mroe noticeable if I have applied denoising (I use the amazing DxO PL4 prime/DeepPrime). They use to be parallel and many times almost concentric wide bands. Do you know what I´m talking about?. Kind regards from Spain. (Rafa). PD: on this video I have found it on the skimmer image at 3:08 for instance. PDII: I don´t watch my screen on a straight position. I turn it a little so it´s less brighter. As if you were watching it from behind. And it becomes more noticeable- mention this if you want to check that effect and maybe your screen is too bright)

Good stuff Mark, I've had the EOS R5 +100 500mm since production. The lock up freeze on the R5 is a common bug which I experienced several times up until a few weeks ago. I've taken over 10,000 images with 300 and 500 primes and also the 100 -500mm since the last lockup and it appears to have gone away, I cant get it to lock up at all. Its like a bug which has gone away hopefully for good. The only thing I have done different is format both cards every time before a shoot, so maybe its a write to card issue ? The Osprey with Ribbon fish was excellent 👍

All my cameras have locked on some occasions. With my Canon's I've often put it down to poor contacts between camera and lens contacts. Taking the lens on and off a few times often fixes it. Using a converter only makes matters worse.

@@wildcat1065 This is a widespread problem with a new camera and new and older lenses, a firmware update this month hopefully will fix it

Very helpful video, thanks. I just purchased an R5 Mark II and the 100-500mm lens, and in reading the instructions I am confused by the different autofocus modes on the lens. I shoot almost exclusively birds, mostly still or slowly moving, but when I am lucky, in flight, and I know I cannot switch between modes using the lens switch in real-time. Any recommendations?

Mark that problem you have with the autofocus losing the subject and focusing on the background, and then NOT reacquiring the subject is one that has been reported by Duade Paton, and probably others. It is not you. Both the R5 and R6 suffer from this problem.

I saw an osprey pull out a huge ribbon fish or “cutlass” fish as they’re re called here in Trinidad a few weeks ago! Sadly I didn’t pick up my 70-200 yet so I only have the action on my phone !

Great videos Mark, I started watching the A9 reviews and subscribed because of those. Can I test your expertise please, I shoot Canon but I am seriously thinking of trying Sony's A9 with the 200-600 for birds in flight, UK Kingfisher. The other option would be to continue with Canon and go for the R5 and the EF-RF adapter so I can use my EF 100-400 Mk2 L lens. Which would you say is the better for eye focus, A9 or R5 and would you suggest I be better to go for R5 or make the change to Sony?? Hope I haven't confused you and hope you are able to reply? Rgds Gary from the U.K.

I watched the video with great pleasure and appreciation, Thank you ... The camera and lens duo I wish to have. It is very difficult to carry EF 500 or EF 600mm lenses. I am not thinking of buying. My question is: Have you had a chance to try the RF 100-500 with 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters? Do RF 100-500 and teleconverters provide enough quality for a traveling nature photographer?

The pics in this vid did look a little soft not only compared to your Sony 7r4/600mm combo but even compared to your older vids using the Nikon D850/ 5oomm combo. How does the Canon 100-500 compare to the Sony200-600 lens? Just curious. It might make a difference which way one would go if they were going to make a brand switch & couldn't afford or justify the 600/F4 lens. I'll see if I can dig up one of your older Sony vids later.

Thanks Mark. Seing that, I imagine that the R4+200-600 & the R5+100-500 are more or less on the same level. Only the 600/4 would be a game changer. (But I can't afford that). I hope you'll try one of these RF f11 in a near future. Lot of fun to expect (on my side at least). Cheers

The Osprey being chased by the Pelicans are superb shots, glad it got away! I'm very happy with my R5 and the EF 100-400 II + 1.4x, I've not seen anything yet to make me want the RF 100-500.

Canon R5 defaults to 1/1 full power flashes consistently when TTL and HSS used at any shutter speed faster than 1/250 sec.
In addition, Bracketing of any kind is not successful-be it flash bracketing or AEB, as the Z cameras are able to do with flash.
    Gear tested:
    Canon R5
    Flashpoint PRO2 MK2 Trigger
    Flashpoint AD1200 PRO
    Flashpoint AD600 PRO TTL
    Flashpoint AD200.
    All gear on latest firmware.
Submitted for user testing, consensus, and hopeful reporting to the manufacturers.

I love the Canon R5 although not interested in that particular lens as you say expensive for what it is. Already have a 100-400mk2 for light travel. Fantastic pics looking forward to when you get the 600mm on the job. As always cant wait till your next vid.. stay safe.
