  • In 1993, the late John Pinette had generated quite a buzz in show business as a great young comic that could open. Frank Sinatra loved using him. Howie Mandel brought him to Atlantic City for a week stay at the Sands Casino Hotel. This gave us a chance to have a little fun with John as we followed him around the popular Sands Food Court. He was instantly creative and easy to work with as he navigated through the crowd looking for tasty bits of food. It was no surprise that in few short years later, he was a headliner. This interview was lost for many years until we found it in 2014 and aired it after his death. John is missed (so is the Sands).

Similarly for myself. I happened to be in Vegas in the late 80's or so and my son had left to gamble so i walked around walked into a show not knowing who he was. He was a total riot, but at the end of his show I still hadn't learned his name, but never heard about him after that in spite of occasionally recollecting his show...until low and behold I came across his obit some 25 years later. Saddened me. IMM he ranks with the all-time greats for his humor and expertise of his delivery.

@@scottrussell1006 He was pretty young here, so it could have been that low. Also at that time, the fallacy that saturated fats (in eg beef & butter & eggs) were the cause of high cholesterol vs transfats/hydrogenated fats & processed foods w/high corn syrup, etc, were causing inflammation & lesions in blood vessels, stimulating/increasing cholesterol production b/c one of cholesterol's functions is to repair the damaged/inflamed tissue➡was being repeated. Research that contradicted saturated fats conclusions was suppressed due to different industries' financial interests➡we didn't know that we didn't know! (the transfats in the 'cheese dog' & 'cheese covered fries' would definitely cause problems, but probably wouldn't have seen evidence of it yet in John's cholesterol numbers at that age➡unless he had the specific metabolic issue that runs in some families.

This emphasis on & questions/comments on food in this interview/by interviewer felt creepy/disrespectful to me. I think it invited (invites) viewers to laugh AT John, not WITH him. It felt demeaning (unintentionally)--asking him how often in a day he eats, etc➡it side-stepped his accomplishment of making people laugh b/c they share in a lot of what he's poking fun at THROUGH the use his many talents, such as word-play/funny sounds/ability to use words to build vivid images people see/hear/feel/fluency in languages/absurdities in our assumptions & cultural norms. His weight thing is just a springboard & vehicle thru which he gets us to see ourselves & laugh at ourselves (eg how small is small--equally frustrates loads of people not concerned abt their wt./same w/hating gyms & treadmills/ski-ing into people, etc.

You have good instincts Ollie. David and John worked out the idea the night before at a meet and greet dinner. John was in AC for an extended run and wanted to do the interview out of showroom area. David suggested the food court (at the time it was a unique place) and John made up all the gags as we went along. So David had to do a "who is this guy" interview while poking him along for the next gag. Some bits worked, some didn't but overall it showed what a talent he was. Pinette had a great time doing it. The only one that didn't was the camera guy. Not an easy gig back then.

@@CurtainCallTVSpatz I don't know--John looked uncomfortable a lot of the time w/the interviewers questions. Could've still have been done at food court➡it's the tact the questions took & John tried to redirect him a lot & make the best of them, while interview-er just kept pushing in same directions (even re: to seafood place )
