i wish mine would get that low. geez. i wake up to 120 ish after 8 hours of not eating. i got tested and its high insulin and high glucose and i know i have adrenal issues so its high cortisol. ugh..
So interesting! I'm 3 days into a prolonged fast (fat adapted). I noticed my glucose rose to 66 and keytones dropped to 3.2 after a 5 mile afternoon walk. By the evening, my glucose dropped to 49 and keytones rose to 5.5. The body is so incredibly flexible! Loving the content you put out there. My vote is to keep it "technical".

As a type 1 diabetic myself, I found this very helpful. The longest fast I have been able to do is 57 hours. This gave me some ideas. Thank you Thomas for sharing you knowledge!
I get my clients into extended fasting after 11 weeks of working with me and it always Amazes them when they take their fasting blood sugar and ketone tests. We calculate out the GKI and then compare to the GKI when they were Intermittent Fasting and the difference is amazing to see. It isn’t uncommon for the body to produce more glucose from the glycerol backbone of the fat molecule. I’ve also experienced this for myself Thomas. As at times throughout a fast my glucose will be elevated beyond what Is was throughout my Intermittent Fasting protocol. Good video here! Thanks for sharing!
When I fast beyond 48 hours my glucose always drops below 70mg/dL and ketones will rise above 3mmol. Does this mean my body is not receving the added flexibility?

Do your research and make sure you're getting enough (but not TOO MUCH) Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium. Also look into Apple Cider Vinegar as an appetite suppressant, it's helped me get through some craving periods.

This answers the conundrum I’ve been experiencing. Type 2 diabetic, three weeks in Keto, IF 16-8, and trying to reduce meds. Glucose levels actually rising to concerning levels during fasting and very minimal carb intake. Working out 5 days a week, I’ve lost 20 lbs in three weeks. Feel great, but I’m wondering if my next A1C will be better or reflect these elevated glucose levels.
Wow, a great deal of fascinating and useful information! I’m type 2 using IF and weight training to help control blood glucose for going on four years now. It’s working and, at 65, I’m becoming a better version of myself. My resolution for 2019 is to do more 3-5 day fasts (did two last Fall) and this video, along with your vids on dry fasting, are a real inspiration. God bless you, Thomas!

If not explained properly, people will get scared and run away from keto and fasting. I do 20- 4hour(eating) fasting every day and see 115 avg blood sugars every morning 8am. That comes down by lunch. Appreciate your awesome work here.
I started low carb and intermittent fasting in May this year (2021). By late June and early July I managed to get my FBG to the 5s. Then suddenly starting 1st week of August my FBG spikes up to high 6s and low 7s. I was depressed and wondered what have gone wrong. Thank God I found this video. Am going to continue with occasional fasting and go low carb as a lifestyle change. Blood pressure stayed below 120/80 though
Hey Thomas, I love your vids. First of all, I had an accident 1 year ago, got myself at 125 kg(275lb) and in 6 months I managed to get on 92.5 kg(204lb). I'm pretty proud of myself. *edit: I'm 1.94 m or 6.4 ft You say that fasting doesn't cause dizziness, but combined with keto I had some very bad days, worst of them was when I almost fainted in a bus. Oh well, you know.... Things we do to get what we want. Any advice on what to do to avoid this small problems, I don't really want to faint at work if it's possible. As for food, idk if I can call it an true keto because I adjusted it to my lifestyle. I mean I eat fat meat, fat cheese, eggs, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and that's about it. I sensed this video coming. Thanks for all the research! The fact that it lets your mitochondria work less means it could potentially be a powerful way to increase longevity. I remember doing some reading that over stimulating your mitochondria leads to always feeling tired. (eg elderly people falling asleep all the time) 🤔
I was told by my pharmacist doing keto and OMAD that for the first weeks my liver would release extra stored glucose and this would stop after a few weeks, and it did. Now, I don't have any sugar spikes, but I do find at times I'm mildly hypoglycemic 3.3 mmol or 60, even though I'm not diabetic. Still losing weight and feeling great, but mindful to check my sugar numerous times during the day, just to be safe.
Type 1 Diabetic here 22 years. Been Fasting/keto for over a year, OMAD for over 7 months. I have experienced a plethora of various blood glucose patterns that have been a delight learning about. I would be very keen to answer questions about my current experience to this point. My last A1c from my blood work was 6.4 and my endo was amazed. I go days where I use Basal insulin only and under 20 units. To days where I have around 40-60 units in a 70/30% Basal/Bolus spread.

Sometimes my sugar will be at a point where before this lifestyle change I would feel shaky, sweaty, and your typical symptoms of low blood sugar. My sugar can go as low as 50mg/dL now and I have zero symptoms of low blood sugar and feel absolutely great. No need to worry either, I take so little insulin that it is impossible for me to dip low enough to the point of concern. I typically used to feel the symptoms of low blood sugar around 70-80 mg/dL. Now it takes it around 40-55 before nay symptoms occur.

@@dana102083 I did it alone. I started with just intermittent fasting and healthier eating. I started doing more and more research and eventually got to a point where I felt so much better and was achieving so much, I just kept going. I am so adapted to burning fat now that even if I have a day of eating 3000 calories of McDonald's, I flush all that water and am back in ketosis within 24-36 hours. I am absolutely amazed at what my body can do. I have gone 72 hours without food as a diabetic with my blood sugar controlled entirely by my basal delivery on my pump. Blood sugar too low? Turn my basal insulin off, and it will rise ever so slightly. Blood sugar climbing ever so slowly? Turn my basal delivery up from .8 units an hour to 1.2 units. There are days where I do not take a single bolus delivery and simply turn my basal up to 2.2-3 units/hr 30 minutes before eating. The lowest amount of insulin I can recall using in a day entirely by basal was 16.5 units. This is with consuming a single 2750-3250 calorie meal. Human body FTW.

Yes. Agreed. I also learnt same things by going on fasts. Short fast increases insulin sensitivity and longer fast burns more fats but increases blood sugar. For example on first day fast bsugar dropped to 80 and then following days came back to 100. Diabetic need a mix of long n short to reverse it in few days. Cheers

Hi there! I'm on OMAD for 6 weeks (no one plate, not keto - I eat everything). I had never any issues with blood glucose level (BGL) before (fasting BGL always below 90), although I ate a lot of sugar (sweets, cakes, etc...). To get some background: I'm 42yo. My top weight was about 230 pounds(5'10"), 215 when started OMAD. Now I'm just below 200. After 2 weeks on OMAD I've made blood tests and BGL was 94 after 18h of fasting! So I started my own BGL measurements and I've found that now my BGL usually raises above 100. Even up to 120. It is not the dawn effect, as I'm measuring it usually before eating (4-6 pm) and before sleeping. I've also made more detailed measurements - every 30mins after eating (1500-2000kcal). My BGL after 0,5 to 1h was up to 140-150, then after 1,5-3 hours dropped below 100 and then was rising again up to 105-115. BTW, I've noticed SOME dawn effect, as after wake up I have BGL around 115. But it somehow explains why I'm almost never lazy in the morning - I get up with out any need to snooze. Because of BGL I've just started to mix OMAD with IF - I'm eating a bit of fruits and nuts (about 300kcal) for about 8 hours and then have my big meal. BGL seems to drop below 100 before the meal. So it seems to work better for my BGL. I would rather like to be back to OMAD, as it allows to easier control hunger for me. And I think it works better for weight loss. My first idea is that it might be caused by insulin-resistant liver or higher cortisol. During my first 2 weeks of OMAD I felt A LOT of energy and kind of "speed up" or even kind of specific anger or "aggression". Later it stabilized. But generally I always easy get stressed, although I've got quite peaceful life and not stressful job. E.g. My blood pressure measured by a medic is high up to 150/100, but when I measure it myself it was usually below 130/90 and now even below 120/80. Should I be concerned about my high BGL on OMAD?
I think we have to be very careful with the concepts. Starvation as you named it is not fasting. The former is something out your control and the latter is something you are willing to and, indeed, you are doing always under certain parameters: it is on your own control. The first one applies and happens when you do not have to eat whereas the second one you restrain your calories intake for your own will.
I do a mix of 16/8 and OMAD mostly OMAD as my lifestyle is pretty full on at times you know being a photographer and all that plus working out. But I have learned to listen to my body and sometimes my body tells me to fast usually 3-4 days its great I call it my little cleansing reset. The body is an amazing machine I marvel at times at how efficient it is litrally the most incredible thing is yourself. (:
100% true after being in ketosis for 5 years my body is so flexible and able to handle carb incredibly well. I practice fasting of 24 hours. And now regardless of what I eat I can have a full eating day of the worst junk carbs massive amounts of sugar and my blood sugar is incredible it does not spike it stays at 4.7 no matter what I eat. It is the most amazing thing. Prior to doing keto and fasting 5 years ago i used to be at 6.8 blood sugar.

Makes sense. Triglycerides increased 101% on my lipid panel over the month before. This was after a 26 hour fast and exercising for 1.5 hours at the end of the fast to dump out glycogen, just for the hell of it. What I was really interested in was fasting insulin and fasting glucose. The Dr. freaked and wanted to put me on statins. I told her what I did to prove (as an ultra endurance athlete) that I was fat adapted, but she didn't get it. Asked if she ever considered measuring my Tri/HDL ratio @ 1.3 Crickets.

Does this elevation in blood sugar during the fast (due to insulin resistance) increase inflammation and the damage caused by high circulating glucose?
I've been a Keto-IF girl for about 4 months and it gets easier and easier to stay in fat-mode. In the beginning, 50-80 g of carbs would set me back days. Now, it's a matter of hours and I'm back. I rarely eat that many carbs, but if i DO, it's super easy to get back in the fat flow.

How do you know if you are insulin sensitive? I deal with a few things. I weigh 260 with borderline high blood sugar,. I have MS and and not very mobile and I have fatty liver disease as well. I also have been trying to do the keto diet but I have no gall bladder. Does this matter? Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to move forward with these issues

Good video, You missed the the even bigger changes or reversal if you deplete the glycogen from some larger muscles while fasting. It forces the muscle to accept the glucose to recharge the muscles glycogen store. This works great for me as my glucose drifts significantly while fasting (Diabedic) otherwise.
Excellent. This explains my basil glucose elevation. I often now see fasted glucose of 104-106 mg/dL doing 5x OMAD per week and fasted gym. Previously I was pre diabetic II but reversed it 2 years ago and routinely got to 80-90 mg/dL fasting glucose. Even at higher fasted glucose I am still producing reasonable ketones even in this higher glucose context at around 1 mmol/L. I presume though that my Glucose-Ketone Ratio (GKI) is not as low so I get less autophagy and anti-cancer effect unless I go to extended fasting.
Hi Jim, I’m in a very similar situation. Pre-diabetic 1.5 years ago, got into Kito and 20:4 for 5 days a week and 2 OMAD. Initially my glucose level was going very low: 70-80. Kitones 2-3. Recently the glucose climbed up in the 95-105 and ketones down to 0.7-1 I have been wearing a freestyle libre so I know my glucose value and can compare with the past. I wanted to do an insuline test to make sure it is still low. I’m also interested to know if because of this we have less benefits on autophagy and potentially to fight cancer. I’m 2 year free 💪
Perfect timing as I’ve been experiencing this exact thing since going to 20/4 IF. I also notice it will be higher the higher percentage of fat grams I eat the day before. Still kinda freaks me out as I was on the verge of being diabetic before beginning my KETO/IF protocol and lost 40lbs. A1C is the true snapshot of your insulin sensitivity and diabetes. Thomas****** Sometimes you miss the overall point of fasting which is health so when discussing use of sugar free drinks it is best to avoid them all together despite being ok for ketosis they negate any positive effect of over all health because they are poison to the body ( especially aspartame). Your ginger recommendation is great albeit fresh ginger is not processed (like your suggested ginger crystal supplement ) , can easily be converted to any form to assist in satiety and is cheap(whole foods). When you mention stevia realize that in the solid form has maldextose which is sugar and stevia is best used in moderation in the liquid form only. How long do these adaptations maintain? let's say you do prolonged and short fasting for 3 months and then you stop fasting (taking a daily net kcal intake), do you rapidly lose these adaptations? if so, how long would they last?

Kade Silbaugh I’ve always been a big guy and stronger than the average guy, and knows how to gains massive amounts of muscle. But gained a lot of fat in the process and never knew how to cut correctly. I’ve been doing keto which is great but I’m thinking about eating those carbs again to go on a bulk hopefully the right way this time 😂
Solano Aguirre I think what my problem was before was that I mixed carbs with fat too often and instead of the insulin shuttling amino acids from the protein it shuttled fats in instead. It’s kinda different going back to a “normal” diet from being in keto for so long and I’m almost afraid to eat carbs for the fear of putting on too much fat 😅.
Although this sounds logical I have experienced this many times and since I used to be diabetic I became concerned that just as you stated that I was losing the ability to uptake the sugar but what I have discovered is that as I fast and drink a lot of water it seems that the cells would rather hold onto the water than let in the glucose so I get the spike but if I fast and cut water intake my glucose goes down
For the holidays I went off my Keto and OMAD routine for 12 days. I ate about 5 pints of Ben and Jerry. Cakes and pastry. Rice, bread and a whole bunch of other kinds high carb foods...I gained 15 lbs in 12 days.(water and inflammation) When I went back I had .6 Ketone blood reading in 1 day of OMAD. I was SHOCKED. I thought I would be out of ketosis for sure and would take me 1 week to get back. Afterwards 1 day of Dry fast...1 day of water fast. 2 days of Bone broth...my weight went back to normal.

I’m giving 16/8 fasting a try for my prediabetic condition. I stop eating at 7PM and don’t start again until 11AM. Will cold brew coffee in the morning negatively affect this? I think the answer is no to that as long as I don’t add anything to it. What about some red wine or whisky post 7PM? If this is going to cause issues what is the mechanism and how bad is it? Thanks!

If a 23hr fast is better than 20, is 30 better than 23? Is a 40hr fast better than 30? Is a 60hr fast better than 50? Thomas stated that long-term fasts decreased insulin sensitivity, but short-term fasts increased insulin sensitivity. I know people who fast 21 days, some 30 days, some that only eat every 48hrs. The study Thomas cited claimed that those who fasted for 60hrs decreased insulin sensitivity. At what point does a fast become short-term? 48hrs? What's the best type of intermittent fasting to increase insulin sensitivity?
Hi Thomas, do you have any information on the effects of fasting for people with type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes, not caused by prolonged insulin resistance)? My sister is interested in trying out IF, but doesn't know how it will work for her, due to the impact of diabetes on the endocrine system. I'm sure there are a lot of us who would be really interested in a video about that.
Life is a pendulum. The more energy you put into one side, the more it'll transfer to the other. We're always aiming for that point of balance within ourselves. Fasting and eating are important opposites that we need to maintain balance with. Really interesting topic.
So when intermittent fasting, do you do it every day? I normally fast 16-18 hours each day but am I supposed to take a break? I would like to lose weight, I need to, but I really want to get into better shape for the health benefits rather than looks. The more longer fasts that are done, does it not then get riskier and riskier when we eat carbs after the fast? Blood sugar could progressively spike to higher and higher levels, especially when we break the extended fasts.

Hi Thomas, great video, appreciate the science. Thanks also for your feedback on a thumbs up to add pushups (30-40 reps) and crunches with my endurance training (treadmill due to winter in DC area). I’m 50, generally fit, looking to lose 15 lbs of fat at this point. Seen a few requests for adding muscle mass on Keto for weight loss (sans carb cycling). As part of such a video, would appreciate more information on differentiating low rep (ok on Keto as I recall) weight training, normal 6-12 reps per set (to be avoided as I recall from one of your excellent discussions), and higher rep (again ok as I recall). I have the same issue after being on IF for almost 3 months
This answers the conundrum I’ve been experiencing. Type 2 diabetic, three weeks in Keto, IF 16-8, and trying to reduce meds. Glucose levels actually rising to concerning levels during fasting and very minimal carb intake. Working out 5 days a week, I’ve lost 20 lbs in three weeks. Feel great, but I’m wondering if my next A1C will be better or reflect these elevated glucose levels.
What was your result? I'm curious to know, as it shocked me how high my glucose levels were after a 4 day fast. It took time for them to recover.

It’s working and, at 65, I’m becoming a better version of myself. If not explained properly, people will get scared and run away from keto and fasting. I do 20- 4hour(eating) fasting every day and see 115 avg blood sugars every morning 8am. I started low carb and intermittent fasting in May this year (2021). By late June and early July I managed to get my FBG to the 5s. Then suddenly starting 1st week of August my FBG spikes up to high 6s and low 7s. I was depressed and wondered what have gone wrong. Thank God I found this video. Am going to continue with occasional fasting and go low carb as a lifestyle change. Blood pressure stayed below 120/80 though

First of all, I had an accident 1 year ago, got myself at 125 kg(275lb) and in 6 months I managed to get on 92.5 kg(204lb). I'm pretty proud of myself. *edit: I'm 1.94 m or 6.4 ft
You say that fasting doesn't cause dizziness, but combined with keto I had some very bad days, worst of them was when I almost fainted in a bus. Oh well, you know.... Things we do to get what we want. Any advice on what to do to avoid this small problems, I don't really want to faint at work if it's possible.
As for food, idk if I can call it an true keto because I adjusted it to my lifestyle. I mean I eat fat meat, fat cheese, eggs, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and that's about it. Every day from 1400 to 1800 calories.

The fact that it lets your mitochondria work less means it could potentially be a powerful way to increase longevity. I remember doing some reading that over stimulating your mitochondria leads to always feeling tired. (eg elderly people falling asleep all the time)

I was told by my pharmacist doing keto and OMAD that for the first weeks my liver would release extra stored glucose and this would stop after a few weeks, and it did. Now, I don't have any sugar spikes, but I do find at times I'm mildly hypoglycemic 3.3 mmol or 60, even though I'm not diabetic. Still losing weight and feeling great, but mindful to check my sugar numerous times during the day, just to be safe.
Type 1 Diabetic here 22 years. Been Fasting/keto for over a year, OMAD for over 7 months. I have experienced a plethora of various blood glucose patterns that have been a delight learning about. I would be very keen to answer questions about my current experience to this point. My last A1c from my blood work was 6.4 and my endo was amazed. I go days where I use Basal insulin only and under 20 units. To days where I have around 40-60 units in a 70/30% Basal/Bolus spread.

Sometimes my sugar will be at a point where before this lifestyle change I would feel shaky, sweaty, and your typical symptoms of low blood sugar. My sugar can go as low as 50mg/dL now and I have zero symptoms of low blood sugar and feel absolutely great. No need to worry either, I take so little insulin that it is impossible for me to dip low enough to the point of concern. I typically used to feel the symptoms of low blood sugar around 70-80 mg/dL. Now it takes it around 40-55 before nay symptoms occur.

@@dana102083 I did it alone. I started with just intermittent fasting and healthier eating. I started doing more and more research and eventually got to a point where I felt so much better and was achieving so much, I just kept going. I am so adapted to burning fat now that even if I have a day of eating 3000 calories of McDonald's, I flush all that water and am back in ketosis within 24-36 hours. I am absolutely amazed at what my body can do.
I have gone 72 hours without food as a diabetic with my blood sugar controlled entirely by my basal delivery on my pump. Blood sugar too low? Turn my basal insulin off, and it will rise ever so slightly. Blood sugar climbing ever so slowly? Turn my basal delivery up from .8 units an hour to 1.2 units. There are days where I do not take a single bolus delivery and simply turn my basal up to 2.2-3 units/hr 30 minutes before eating. The lowest amount of insulin I can recall using in a day entirely by basal was 16.5 units. This is with consuming a single 2750-3250 calorie meal. Human body FTW.

Yes. Agreed. I also learnt same things by going on fasts. Short fast increases insulin sensitivity and longer fast burns more fats but increases blood sugar. For example on first day fast bsugar dropped to 80 and then following days came back to 100. Diabetic need a mix of long n short to reverse it in few days. Cheers

Hi there!
I'm on OMAD for 6 weeks (no one plate, not keto - I eat everything). I had never any issues with blood glucose level (BGL) before (fasting BGL always below 90), although I ate a lot of sugar (sweets, cakes, etc...).
To get some background: I'm 42yo. My top weight was about 230 pounds(5'10"), 215 when started OMAD. Now I'm just below 200.
After 2 weeks on OMAD I've made blood tests and BGL was 94 after 18h of fasting! So I started my own BGL measurements and I've found that now my BGL usually raises above 100. Even up to 120. It is not the dawn effect, as I'm measuring it usually before eating (4-6 pm) and before sleeping.
I've also made more detailed measurements - every 30mins after eating (1500-2000kcal). My BGL after 0,5 to 1h was up to 140-150, then after 1,5-3 hours dropped below 100 and then was rising again up to 105-115.
BTW, I've noticed SOME dawn effect, as after wake up I have BGL around 115. But it somehow explains why I'm almost never lazy in the morning - I get up with out any need to snooze.
Because of BGL I've just started to mix OMAD with IF - I'm eating a bit of fruits and nuts (about 300kcal) for about 8 hours and then have my big meal. BGL seems to drop below 100 before the meal. So it seems to work better for my BGL.
I would rather like to be back to OMAD, as it allows to easier control hunger for me. And I think it works better for weight loss.
My first idea is that it might be caused by insulin-resistant liver or higher cortisol. During my first 2 weeks of OMAD I felt A LOT of energy and kind of "speed up" or even kind of specific anger or "aggression". Later it stabilized. But generally I always easy get stressed, although I've got quite peaceful life and not stressful job. E.g. My blood pressure measured by a medic is high up to 150/100, but when I measure it myself it was usually below 130/90 and now even below 120/80.
Should I be concerned about my high BGL on OMAD?

I think we have to be very careful with the concepts. Starvation as you named it is not fasting. The former is something out your control and the latter is something you are willing to and, indeed, you are doing always under certain parameters: it is on your own control.
The first one applies and happens when you do not have to eat whereas the second one you restrain your calories intake for your own will.
I do a mix of 16/8 and OMAD mostly OMAD as my lifestyle is pretty full on at times you know being a photographer and all that plus working out. But I have learned to listen to my body and sometimes my body tells me to fast usually 3-4 days its great I call it my little cleansing reset.
The body is an amazing machine I marvel at times at how efficient it is litrally the most incredible thing is yourself. (:
100% true after being in ketosis for 5 years my body is so flexible and able to handle carb incredibly well. I practice fasting of 24 hours. And now regardless of what I eat I can have a full eating day of the worst junk carbs massive amounts of sugar and my blood sugar is incredible it does not spike it stays at 4.7 no matter what I eat. It is the most amazing thing. Prior to doing keto and fasting 5 years ago i used to be at 6.8 blood sugar.

Makes sense. Triglycerides increased 101% on my lipid panel over the month before. This was after a 26 hour fast and exercising for 1.5 hours at the end of the fast to dump out glycogen, just for the hell of it. What I was really interested in was fasting insulin and fasting glucose. The Dr. freaked and wanted to put me on statins. I told her what I did to prove (as an ultra endurance athlete) that I was fat adapted, but she didn't get it. Asked if she ever considered measuring my Tri/HDL ratio @ 1.3 Crickets.

I am not diabetic and I have been on IF for the last 3 months 18 to 20 hours fasting.. my fasting blood sugar was always in the normal range.. but all out of sudden the last 3 days my fasting blood sugar elevated between 100 - 122 and it goes back to normal 2/3 hours after food

I've been a Keto-IF girl for about 4 months and it gets easier and easier to stay in fat-mode. In the beginning, 50-80 g of carbs would set me back days. Now, it's a matter of hours and I'm back. I rarely eat that many carbs, but if i DO, it's super easy to get back in the fat flow.

How do you know if you are insulin sensitive? I deal with a few things. I weigh 260 with borderline high blood sugar,. I have MS and and not very mobile and I have fatty liver disease as well. I also have been trying to do the keto diet but I have no gall bladder. Does this matter? Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to move forward with these issues

Good video, You missed the the even bigger changes or reversal if you deplete the glycogen from some larger muscles while fasting. It forces the muscle to accept the glucose to recharge the muscles glycogen store. This works great for me as my glucose drifts significantly while fasting (Diabedic) otherwise.

How often should I fast with insulin resistance?
Excellent. This explains my basil glucose elevation. I often now see fasted glucose of 104-106 mg/dL doing 5x OMAD per week and fasted gym. Previously I was pre diabetic II but reversed it 2 years ago and routinely got to 80-90 mg/dL fasting glucose. Even at higher fasted glucose I am still producing reasonable ketones even in this higher glucose context at around 1 mmol/L. I presume though that my Glucose-Ketone Ratio (GKI) is not as low so I get less autophagy and anti-cancer effect unless I go to extended fasting.

I’m in a very similar situation.
Pre-diabetic 1.5 years ago, got into Kito and 20:4 for 5 days a week and 2 OMAD. Initially my glucose level was going very low: 70-80. Kitones 2-3.
Recently the glucose climbed up in the 95-105 and ketones down to 0.7-1
I have been wearing a freestyle libre so I know my glucose value and can compare with the past.
I wanted to do an insuline test to make sure it is still low.
I’m also interested to know if because of this we have less benefits on autophagy and potentially to fight cancer. I’m 2 year free 💪
Perfect timing as I’ve been experiencing this exact thing since going to 20/4 IF. I also notice it will be higher the higher percentage of fat grams I eat the day before. Still kinda freaks me out as I was on the verge of being diabetic before beginning my KETO/IF protocol and lost 40lbs. A1C is the true snapshot of your insulin sensitivity and diabetes. Thomas****** Sometimes you miss the overall point of fasting which is health so when discussing use of sugar free drinks it is best to avoid them all together despite being ok for ketosis they negate any positive effect of over all health because they are poison to the body ( especially aspartame). Your ginger recommendation is great albeit fresh ginger is not processed (like your suggested ginger crystal supplement ) , can easily be converted to any form to assist in satiety and is cheap(whole foods). When you mention stevia realize that in the solid form has maldextose which is sugar and stevia is best used in moderation in the liquid form only. Keep an open mind you are doing well Thanks for your genuine effort.

Kade Silbaugh I’ve always been a big guy and stronger than the average guy, and knows how to gains massive amounts of muscle. But gained a lot of fat in the process and never knew how to cut correctly. I’ve been doing keto which is great but I’m thinking about eating those carbs again to go on a bulk hopefully the right way this time 😂
You need insulin to deliver aminoacids for your cells, so eating cabs can help you build more muscle.
Solano Aguirre I think what my problem was before was that I mixed carbs with fat too often and instead of the insulin shuttling amino acids from the protein it shuttled fats in instead. It’s kinda different going back to a “normal” diet from being in keto for so long and I’m almost afraid to eat carbs for the fear of putting on too much fat 😅.
Although this sounds logical I have experienced this many times and since I used to be diabetic I became concerned that just as you stated that I was losing the ability to uptake the sugar but what I have discovered is that as I fast and drink a lot of water it seems that the cells would rather hold onto the water than let in the glucose so I get the spike but if I fast and cut water intake my glucose goes down
For the holidays I went off my Keto and OMAD routine for 12 days. I ate about 5 pints of Ben and Jerry. Cakes and pastry. Rice, bread and a whole bunch of other kinds high carb foods...I gained 15 lbs in 12 days.(water and inflammation) When I went back I had .6 Ketone blood reading in 1 day of OMAD. I was SHOCKED. I thought I would be out of ketosis for sure and would take me 1 week to get back. Afterwards 1 day of Dry fast...1 day of water fast. 2 days of Bone broth...my weight went back to normal.

I’m giving 16/8 fasting a try for my prediabetic condition. I stop eating at 7PM and don’t start again until 11AM. Will cold brew coffee in the morning negatively affect this? I think the answer is no to that as long as I don’t add anything to it.
What about some red wine or whisky post 7PM? If this is going to cause issues what is the mechanism and how bad is it?

Jeffrey Hoffmann 16 hrs fast is better than 14 hrs...20 hrs fast better than 16...23 hrs fast is better than 20 hrs. If that is not intermittent fasting then I am confused.
If a 23hr fast is better than 20, is 30 better than 23? Is a 40hr fast better than 30? Is a 60hr fast better than 50? Thomas stated that long-term fasts decreased insulin sensitivity, but short-term fasts increased insulin sensitivity. I know people who fast 21 days, some 30 days, some that only eat every 48hrs. The study Thomas cited claimed that those who fasted for 60hrs decreased insulin sensitivity. At what point does a fast become short-term? 48hrs?

Life is a pendulum. The more energy you put into one side, the more it'll transfer to the other. We're always aiming for that point of balance within ourselves. Fasting and eating are important opposites that we need to maintain balance with. Really interesting topic.
So when intermittent fasting, do you do it every day? I normally fast 16-18 hours each day but am I supposed to take a break? I would like to lose weight, I need to, but I really want to get into better shape for the health benefits rather than looks. I’m also trying to conceive with hormonal issues so I don’t want to do anything too crazy that will make an already difficult task impossible. Thank you Thom. The more longer fasts that are done, does it not then get riskier and riskier when we eat carbs after the fast? Blood sugar could progressively spike to higher and higher levels, especially when we break the extended fasts.

I’m 50, generally fit, looking to lose 15 lbs of fat at this point. Seen a few requests for adding muscle mass on Keto for weight loss (sans carb cycling). As part of such a video, would appreciate more information on differentiating low rep (ok on Keto as I recall) weight training, normal 6-12 reps per set (to be avoided as I recall from one of your excellent discussions), and higher rep (again ok as I recall).
