I still hold that the placement of "My father didn't leave me" is one of the best, well-thought-out decisions in the whole show. In one line, you realize that Rebecca making absolutely arbitrary assumptions about Valencia based on her perception of her goes much deeper than any sort of basic envy, and it opens up the character in a way that lets the audience realize she's dealing with much than she realizes. All this in the 2nd episode of the show- absolutely genius!
Correct. To Rebecca, Valencia is literally the definition of absolute perfection, so it is inconceivable that someone so perfect could ever have a dysfunctional family. When the reality is....literally everyone’s family is dysfunctional in some sense.
@@TequilaMockingBird91 and not just dysfunctional families, but trauma in general! Rebecca ultimately sees herself as a product of her trauma (which is both understandable yet doesn't wholly excuse the things she's done) and on a more superficial level, she's taken that identity and morphed it into, "If *my* father hadn't left me, I could've been a beautiful and successful yoga instructor like Valencia". It's illogical to the max and isn't a fair way to think about other people at all, but again, this is episode 2 Rebecca. She comes a long way!
it’s also the first time we ever hear about her father leaving her. sure we here about her parents divorce but not straight up abandonment. and it’s sort of out of nowhere and hits really hard. you’re so right
I love Rebecca wearing a Harvard shirt as she is mercilessly told how much Valencia is better than her in every way, holding on to her prestigious education as a last shred of pride that ultimately brought her nothing in the face of a woman who she perceives as happier and more accomplished.
alternatively it could be read as rebecca's blindness to both her own privlege and her worth. rebecca came from a white wealthy family and went to harvard law and walked away from an enourmous salary on a whim vs valencia who's a small town latina yoga teacher. but rebecca doesnt see any of that bc valencia has the one thing she really wants at this point: dating josh. she sees herself sweating on the ground while valencia mocks her for her percieved flaws while ignoring all the advantages she had in life over valencia. and it can be argued as unintentional foreshadowing to how later on valencia calls rebecca out on her privilege on actually wanting a prison sentence to atone for her behavior.
The thing is, that's just Rebecca talking to herself, about herself. She has profound self-loathing that permeates everything, despite all of her concrete accomplishments.
James Owens actually, the Harvard shirt is just to set her up for a joke that she makes immediately after this musical performance. Valencia casually asks if she went to Harvard and Rebecca says that she doesn’t like to talk about Harvard and Valencia’s like “oh....your shirt literally says Harvard on it”
what's interesting is that Rebecca wearing the Harvard shirt over a Yale one is another failure to her (bear with me). We see that she should have gone to Harvard if it weren't for the Patrick thing. Yes Yale is an amazing school but its pretty obvious her mother wanted her to go to Harvard for her law degree. She clings onto the Harvard shirt but doesn't really acknowledge Yale that much because Yale to her was a consequence of her failure to be 'normal.'
Actually ahe isn't doing anything. This is going through Rebecca's head before she got to know Valencia. She is telling these to herself, she is fat-shaming herself, she is assuming she and everyone else in the room is better than her. People forget that the songs in this musical aren't real. Every song is Rebecca's impression of the world and when you listen to the songs with this perspective, you can see her borderline personality disorder.
I actually don't see this song as Valencia being an asshole. I see it as Rebecca having such crippling self-doubt and self-centeredness, that she literally thinks the whole yoga class is mocking her by doing a good job. Nobody is paying attention to you, Rebecca, they are all there to exercise, nobody cares about your weight or about how well you do a pose. Lol. (It's nice to see how much she grows during the series. Some of her self-absorved habits remain, but she comes out much healthier at the end of the show) Edit: typos
You’re more or less right. Some people are self conscious about their bodies at the gym when the reality is that people are there to train their own bodies and they have little interest in mocking new comers.
The irony is that Rebecca is actually right - Valencia does initially turn out to be as bad as this song makes her out to be (Women Gotta Stick Together is harsh) But she doesn't stay that way, which is so refreshing
Laura Bruce that song wasn’t necessarily a song about Valencia so much as it is a comment on how women in particular tend to be more judgmental of other women for the most shallowest of reasons when they have reasons to feel threatened by said women. Valencia’s theme is “This Is My Movement”, not “Women Gotta Stick Together”. The former explains how Valencia is determined to be heard for her ideals and her beliefs which are noble in nature but are subdued by the fact that Valencia is....well, Valencia. Yes, Valencia is right and she’s right for all the right reasons, but she’s still inevitably “wrong” because she’s a shitty person and thus she’s a complete hypocrite.
Mental illness is weird. It's like a negative ego trip, except instead of being positive all of it is about how you are terrible, everyone hates you, everyone is out to get you. It's like being stuck in a nightmare of your own making. It's tough because it's not positive ego, but it's still ego. And the people who have this type usually have so much self-doubt and very low sense of self. But sometimes people only see the ego portions, the world revolving around them, albeit in depressing and scary ways. A depressed mind is wrapped up in itself, usually from rumination. It also contributes to why depressed people have trouble keeping friendships and contact. They are too busy tearing themselves down to notice others or they are mentally drained from the ritualistic self-loathing and punishment. I wish people were taught more about how things like this work, especially depression since it's so often comorbid to other mental health struggles and illnesses.
What I like about this show is how realistic everyone's bodies are. There are some conventionally attractive people, some fat people, some nerdy-looking people...like in reality. There's no population of unrealistically ripped guys and unrealistically thin yet somehow big-boobed women at the same time. The cast just looks like a group of people you'd see in real life. I feel the censored version is superior. The words “hoo-ha!” And “butt stuff” are better because it sounds as if Valencia is condescending to Rebecca by specifically talking down to her like a child. This ties in perfectly to how Valencia (unintentionally) embarrasses Rebecca by suggesting that she should consider doing child’s poses.

turns out that's the twist. in season 3 she gets diagnosed as having BPD, and the rest of the show is about her coming to grips about its impact on her life. it's incredibly compassionate towards her despite her issues.
She does have it, afaik. Just to note, despite the stereotypes, BPD isn't about violence, cray-crayness or obsession necessarily; it's about the pathological fears of abandonment and loneliness that cause abnormal behaviours to happen in a mistaken attempt to maintain social relationships that often actually do more harm than good. It's the person literally trying to reach out and try to keep the connection alive in a disturbed way. I'm not saying you said that at all, but it's important to note this when BPD is mentioned due to the stigma.
I tried out one of the yoga videos in my fitness app today and it had the "nope, I'm an adult" pose! I thought of this video every time I had to do that move.

turns out that's the twist. in season 3 she gets diagnosed as having BPD, and the rest of the show is about her coming to grips about its impact on her life. it's incredibly compassionate towards her despite her issues.
She does! The whole show was leading up to it. She finally gets a proper diagnosis, BPD, and the final season is all about her recovery
yea she’s literally dignsoed whith it in season 3
I tried out one of the yoga videos in my fitness app today and it had the "nope, I'm an adult" pose! I thought of this video every time I had to do that move.
I have this stuck in my head every time I go to yoga....
