    Ed, I'm so glad you've joined us, the New balance SC trainer is my favorite shoe ever in fact as I was getting ready to go out the door for a run I was setting up my TH-cam playlist and this video popped up and got me so excited because I'm literally wearing them right now. In fact, I can't stop wearing them. They are my favorite running shoes I've ever worn ever.

      Was my favorite shoe last year but I know how fickle the fits for NB can be. I’ve had to send other shoes back (Rebel v2) for different sizes as well . Looking forward to the lighter V2 of the SC Trainer

    I always wanted to try these. I liked my Propel for faster paced runs and have an 880V12 I liked over my Clifton 8. I got the Nimbus 25 earlier this year and always thought of the SC Trainers lol, managed to nab one for 95, a huge bargain since it's the last one with my size lol. I'd definitely say it's really squishy, it has more stack height than my Nimbus but it easily compresses down. I'd say it's a mushy version of the nimbus while capable of taking a slightly faster pace. Nowhere as fast paced as a Rebel or Propel, but definitely faster than a Nimbus 25

      The 2023 version 2 reduces weight by 2 whole ounces, and has softer compound, but less of it; under 40mm. And fixed the awful ankle collar. Available in Spring, about the time I'll have worn my version 1 out.

    Lacing, yeah, this is one of those shoes that when you lace it snug it migrates to the top lacing by the knot making that painfully tight but loose across the midsole.

    Best shoes ever, now i can run almost everyday without knee problems. The best part of this shoe is that when you start to run in them you dont really want to stop because it feels good, it basicly makes me want to run longer distances...

    For me SC trainer is a shoe just for easy runs or maybe moderate tempo runs. Iam a little disappointed cause I was expecting more response and fun from SC trainer. It is incredibly heavy mainly for long runs and I much prefer Adidas PrimeX strung. Nice video Edd!!

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it hasn’t for the same feel. More a max cushioned beast than the primex which is something all it’s own

    I enjoyed my first two runs in them. But I soured on them a bit after using them for a long run. It’s a lot to lug around for long time. For me, it really just works for short, easy recovery runs.

    • @EDDBUD

      @mr.h.9103 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I want to enjoy them, but there is something off. Plus the first two runs my left talocrural joint in the front was just killing me. That has gone away and honestly probably just me as I shattered that ankle 15 years ago. Still I bought the thinking they would move the impact away from my ankles.

  • @JeremyGiese

    Picked up alittle bit ago for $130 , 50miles into them, absolutely love it. I like that I don’t really notice the plate and can just cruise along. I like more cushion in the forefoot since I land there the most.

    @ksteege ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hope you and the family had a very Happy Holidays Ed! You are the second person that I have heard that had some issue with lockdown which surprises me - I commented there as well, It seems so odd because the shoe fits me so well whatever shape it is works super well for me - I find the upper just melts into my foot and my highest recommendation is that the feeling of the shoe goes away - no slippage or anything. In fact I have recommended it to folks - and all 5 people that bought it have come back with the same feeling that I have - from the upper to the fact that they all ran faster when they had it on - so you can see my consternation here. It is without a doubt my shoe of the year - in fact 2 weeks ago (both I and a friend) I wore it for a road ultra and still loved it - for me 30 miles straight in the shoe and still loved it all the way. I hope that the updates in 2023 dont change the feel for me - already about to buy a second pair so I have them

  • @TheHutchRuns
    @TheHutchRuns ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Absolutely ridiculous at full price but I've just got them at £132 on sportshoes and intend to use them for the majority of my marathon training for my two races this year. I didn't even consider them at £210 as that was just a silly price but they look to be a positive bargain at £132 and really looking forward to getting them

    • @andrewharper4296
      @andrewharper4296 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It think this is partially the problem now. £200 is almost becoming normal for hi end running shoes now. I suppose I don’t mind too much if they have longevity in them but some race shoes only seem to last 100 miles. It’s cheaper to run in a heavily depreciating Aston Martin….lol.

  • @over1498

    This is one of the few where I’m just going to wait for the second version, where they’ll hopefully fix things and lighten it up.

      I have the EP1 EP2 and EP3 and they're all pretty different. The 2 is MUCH roomier in the toe box area and you can feel the added stack height compared to V1. I wore my V1's once, they're just too narrow for me, whereas the V2's are almost too spacious up front. The V3's are absolute tits all around, running my first HM in them in 8 weeks.

  • @jamesweeks6232
    @jamesweeks6232 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I didn’t like mine the first couple of runs- I had some rubbing around the collar. Went away quickly though! I use them for recovery and long runs. I’ve found them most efficient when I lower my cadence slightly. They really roll you forward then. Cheers Ed!

    Happy New year Edd. I had these recently in the same colourway but as you mentioned, there was some pain around the top of the foot and ankle area. I couldn't fix it even with different socks/lacing style so I sold them just before Christmas. I'll stick with the Prime X Strung for now. However, these do make a great shoe for walking in. Looking forward to the SC trainer V2 in the Summer.

    Happy new year, Edd! This shoe both intrigues and scares me, because of the height. I'll probably wait for a discounted version 2. Love the colour though, way better than the green one. I agree that New Balance sizing is a bit off. I have the RC Elite 2, which is true to size for me, but I had to go down half a size on the 1080 v12. But you're certainly not the only one who has had to go up in size...

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s way more stable than the primex. But with this bulk it’s not all that propulsive to be honest.

  • @andrewlink7163
    @andrewlink7163 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Ed. I can tell you're not overly keen on these - Prime X seems to be your choice on the two - however, given they are now on offer they do seem a good option. I've been doing most of my marathon training cycles in the Invincibles for the last year - on my third pair - and Novablast 3 if it's really dry (West Wilts has been soggy this winter).
    Your recent review - and it seems everybody else - on the Invincible 3 was a little underwhelming hence me considering these as a replacement and to wean me off the ZoomX crack.
    Being an older chap (61) with rickety knees and one dodgy ankle I'm more into comfort than anything else - I barely do any speedwork anyway, unless I'm being chased by dogs.
    Would you consider these a good bet? I'll likely be using the NB RC Elite V2 for races but you can even pick them up for slightly less than these - I thought about getting a second pair lol

    I think the carbon plate in these shoes add stability to the landing and cushioning otherwise this amount of the fuelcell may cause quite a bit of unstable ride. The shape of the plate may benefit heel strikers more as I land on forefoot I can't really feel the huge chunk of fuelcell give a lot of cushioning that I expected, and the carbon plate don't really do much for pushing me forward like other carbon plated shoes.
    For long run these maybe a bit too heavy especially for mid/forefoot strikers, I found Rebel v3, although without the carbon plate, is a better choice (and much lighter, and cheaper) for me as a daily trainer (in fact it is my favorite choice atm).
    The upper very quite comfortable for me, especially love the sock like feeling. I didn't experience your issue, but different people have different feel shape and size so maybe it work for certain foot shape.
    I think these shoes are best for recovery runs, which limited the use of the high price tag of these shoes.

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว

    Happy New Year, Ed! Thanks for the review of the SC Trainer. I have this myself as an easy/recovery kind of shoe. I like to use it for easy runs of around 7~8 miles a day after a long (10+ miles) faster pace run or tempo with the Prime X Strung and daily training kinds of stuff with the Deviate Nitro 2. To me, it really isn't a worthy competitor to the PXS and I don't even consider it to be in the same category except that it has the "illegal" stack height. Although it can pick up the pace a bit due to the plate, I just don't see it as a fast pace shoe and it's also not a long distance shoe due to the weight. It's more in the category of shoes like the Invincible Run 2 and More V4. It's good and I like it for what it is.
    Looking at the upcoming SC Trainer 2, it seems NB has decided to abandon trying to compete with the PXS (and the upcoming PXS 2) in the super stack category and target the lower stack all-round daily trainer kind of realm against the likes of Deviate Nitro 2 and Endorphin Speed 3. Not sure if it'll work but I guess we'll see. Overall, the SC Trainer is a good niche shoe and I like to rotate it with the Invincible Run 2 for that soft, squishy, and bounce-down-the-road kind of ride at an easy pace.

      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nike UK size 9 is a US 10 and EU 44. New Balance UK 9 is US 9.5 and EU 43. So you need to go up a minimum 0.5 size on all New Balance. I found I needed a whole size up.

  • @andrewharper4296
    @andrewharper4296 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting video. Thanks again. Like you I got the same shoe on offer for about the same price. They are being shipped to me this week. I’m going to rotate them with a pair of Novablast 3’s as my 2’s are starting to cry enough. I was going to use the Nova’s for my daily runs and maybe the NB’s for my long runs but we’ll see. I have a pair of Elite RC2’s for race days. Iike you I have slightly mixed opinions of the NB’s high stack approach. It’s like they work in a specific terrain window. What I mean by that is flat! 😂 The RC2’s don’t like going steep downhill at all. It’s like being out of control. 😆 I would imagine the SC’s feel the same. Uphill though is insane, so much energy return you can feel the plate working. I’m a heavy runner at 80kg and these types of shoes avoid my legs being beaten up the next day. I used to run in Cumulus. Great shoe but my legs used to be so sore after running events. With what I have now, I’m quicker and zero soreness the next day. You mention Nike but I’m so nervous of buying their gear now. I’ve wasted too much money on their shoes to find that they simply don’t work with me. Could be my weight, don’t know but I’m in constant pain with them. 😂 Wishing you all a great 2023, enjoy your running and all the best for the next 12 months. 😊

    I really love mine ! Gor them in light green, and they feel absolutely great even after 100 miles give or take. The first run was delusive as the ankle collar did hurt a bit, and the midsole felt squisssshhhhy. But after a while it all fell into place and i enjoy the big slab of confort these shoes offer for long rues, recovery days and even daily training for my next half marathon. I dont know how they compare with the adidas or the nikes but i positively love my NB. Only thing, the already tear on the exterior side of the outsole. I am a regular runner (no overpronation or supination) but as soft under foot as they are, they might lack stability when you strike the ground, so i think they will be worn out after 300 miles max. Otherwise it is just a big YEAH for me. Bought then on sale last november.

    Shoes seem so personal. I don't have this one but have watched two videos on it today. One was named as shoe of the year for that TH-camr. Your verdict seems so so even at near half price! Is there a trend for this new wave of super high stack trainers to be ones you really like or not. This, the Superblast, More v4 just seem to want to take away any ground feel and in our larger sizes rather heavy. I do think the Prime X is a bit different as it is kind of like a built up "super" shoe but it's the only I have tried so am guessing a bit. However in my size, the Prime X is 130g heavier than the Vaporfly so illegal or not, it is hardly going to be my choice for my next race. This NB one doesn't seem any lighter for sure. I bet the weight of these for the other TH-camr is way less than it is for us...

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s no super shoe Tim. A reasonable cruiser. I can’t see me running at half marathon pace in this thing! 335 in my size so a hefty boot in yours.

    I'm a big fan of the RC Elite v2 - can't believe a super-shoe can be so soft and still feel fast! I hope to get some of the SC models (when they start to appear cheaper!). I always find it weird I never seem to see anyone else running in NB in races.

    Happy New Year Edd🍾🥂 Great video, as always. New Balance makes some great running shoes, but the SC Trainer is their best, hands down (IMO). It is my favorite long run shoe of all time. I ran in many high stack shoes, but this shoe is the only shoe that makes me feel pain free after my long runs. Best cushion combined with that plate makes every step on my run so enjoyable.

  • @chrisbull845
    @chrisbull845 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I bought this shoe last month as I wanted a long run shoe that had plenty of cush . I love the cush on this and the outsole is great and way more sticky than I expected . Also, my slight concerns of the stack making me totter about were unfounded as the stability is superb.
    The issue i have is that the left shoe upper keeps feeling like the tongue has folded in on itself, even though when I check it hasn't. Its not enough to cause rubbing but its annoying to feel this sort of pressing sensation and I find myself stopping now and again to fiddle with. I actually like what they have done with the upper and the lockdown for me is superb (I went TTS) but that left shoe is annoying me.
    I find that I don't notice the weight at all early on, but I've only taken this shoe to 10 miles max as you most definitely feel the weight creep up by that point.
    I want to love this shoe as there are aspects about it I really really like but I'm not entirely sure after the early bedding in period . It's being pushed as a long run and easy run trainer that you can bounce through the miles, and while that's true up to a point, I'm really not sure it's going to be the best thing for those looonnnng runs.
    Sorry that this has rambled but it's a shoe that has kind of perplexed me a bit. I really like quite a lot about it and could have really fallen for this shoe, but I just don't know what to think. Your review makes total sense to me! If this shoe was a friend, it would be that friend who is loyal, a great laugh and someone you really like, but you just wish he wouldn't make a tit of himself in the pub on a Saturday night so much.
    And you're right Edd - it's a bugger to clean. I bought it in white and now I would describe the colourway as 'marshland bog' 😂

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @sunnlands ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One tiny fix is to skip the second top eyelet on the medial side and only use the last eyelet with a regular knot. This alleviates pressure at the top of the upper.
    Second point. This is a shoe that needs some getting used to.
    Third, the Trainer can be viewed as a super max cushioned shoe for the masses, the democratic choice. The Prime X is not for everybody, the Trainer is a lot more stable and forgiving

      I’m still a big fan of the TC predecessor as well. Not seeing the issues you highlight so I’m glad about that, but my shoe “palate” is not near as refined as yours. A shoe really has to suck before I say “not good”. 😅

    You don't answer the one question I have. I prefer to lace the shoe all the way up using the last hole on top to better lock the heel in place. Doing this there is almost no laces left making it hard to tie the shoe. Any solution for this, or are the last holes just decoration?

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do talk extensively about the lacing and in subsequent videos. It’s not a good upper at all and lockdown is influenced by the weird gusseting of the tongue.

    • @EDDBUD

      I don’t have every shoe available. Infact I turn down lots of free pairs and focus on specific ones that might work. At the mo for speed days the Puma deviate nitro elite 2 is hard to beat.
