As far as blender goes: To isolate the head from the body what I would personally do is go into edit mode and switch my selection mode by pressing W once which should put you into circle select. From there you can turn on x-ray by pressing alt-z or by clicking the icon with the 2 squares in the top right. This will allow you to select vertices through the mesh. From there you can simply paint all the vertices you want removed and then hit delete. As far as the spikes go, the method you used certainly works and is more accurate but is a lot more work. Personally I would just position them by moving, scaling and rotating with G, S, and R. Hope this was informative! Great video!

This is like exactly what I was looking for. it works great but how do you close the hollow part after removing the unwanted vertices? It's not as intuitive as Alt Selecting the open part after removing in this way.

What I can say? In the old times kitbashing was a meaning of finding the right pieces ,then cut, pinning and a decent amount of putty....Now all we've to do is blending on a PC, then you print with your 3D printer. The model is astounding, and the paint job very in accordance with the character, well done!

    • @iPaintSmallThings
      @iPaintSmallThings  ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's kinda wild what you can do with 3D Printing. BUT there will always a cool place for greenstuff and classic kitbashing. Thanks!

i think traditional kitbashing will still be around

@@kris220bMy idea of peak kitbashing is the traditional forms of kitbashing with help from 3d prints or third party bits where applicable. I have a guard army in the works thats entirely 3d prints but for an army like tau, i plan on using official plastic as a base for the printed bits

instead of directly painting yellow when doing hazard stripes, where you often get bad coverage unless you got a REALLY good yellow
you can instead paint them white or light grey, and then cover it with a yellow contrast, instant full coverage yellow, then add the black stripes

i havent tried others than imperial fists contrast, but it works very well
originally i had hoped a yellow acrylic from AK would have been good, as their whites and oranges are rather nice, but sadly no

Fantastic video! Love the digital sculpting elements and the detailed, yet approachable paintjob.
Strongly recommend adding 3D builder to your digital kitbashing pipeline. It's plane cut feature is lightning quick, and basically foolproof. While being less fiddly and finicky than Blender's booleans. Though if you want to keep within Blender exclusively, a simple Knife tool cut with "Cut through" enabled would make easy work of separating the remainders of the shoulders from the head section. Just requires you to throw a plane into the cut after deleting the faces on the outside.

I'm curious about how impactful that red underspray would be if you're going to do an oil wash over the model anyway. I imagine the subtlety of the shadows that the underspray is supposed to give would be lost once the model is oil washed, especially since the general scheme is so dark and dingy anyway. It breaks down how to model an original 3d character mesh from start to finish. And it also looks like someone has tried to convert the methods into Blender in the last few years. This tutorial takes on how to manipulate sub-topology vs. The boolean editing method which sometimes cuts the mesh poorly on more advanced models, if I remember correctly. If you keep a nice clean mesh you can really keep the quads clean and running through the entire model which i bet will help with 3d printing instructions.

Great job, as always on top!)
I would like to ask, if you play table Warhammer, what kind of army do you have?
It would be interesting to take a look at her review.

haha thank you! I really only play kill team-- so little projects like this are perfect! BUT I think for 40k the biggest army is my (not converted) death guard and my Imperial Guard/Admech army.

@@iPaintSmallThings There is a place for everything in this hobby and I also love small armies. They can, and most importantly, you need to focus on your fighters. Add personality to them. It's difficult to do this in a giant army.

@@iPaintSmallThings And I have another question. If it's not difficult, can you please help with finding the usual models of space marines. I'm still a beginner and I can't find anything. I often come across ready-made models, but I need them...naked, the simplest models. Already with which I will continue to work and change.
How do you search for the right assets?

@@orggaming4753 I often times just search flat out "space marine" or try to think of something that may have the right look to it -- like a space knight or something like that.

Seriously recommend free handing with oil paints. You have more working time and can be erased with mineral spirits

Please people, for the love of God, use Meshmixer, free Autodesk software designed to do this stuff. So much easier than blender.

I'll check it out! I'm just so used to blender now. I mainly use meshmixer to solidify meshes and make them cleaner

I think you're doing yourself a bit of a disservice utilizing SpongeBob memes in your video, the way it's cut in clashes heavily the viewing experience however light hearted transitions similar to them could work well within your videos.

That's valid! I love me some Spongebob Squarepants but I know our favorite underwater sponge isn't everyone's cup of tea. May explore some other (probably equally as silly) transitions going forward. I always appreciate feedback!
