- I install the Genuine Ford Parts bonnet struts on my Ford Focus RS!
Made from quality materials, coated and painted black, they are very light weight, really look cool, and look very OEM complete with a Ford logo!
This mod, which I purchased from SiCo Developments, looks OEM because it is OEM! A genuine Ford Parts item that was made specifically for the MK3 Focus and indeed looks like it was made in the same fashion as the rear hatch / trunk / boot struts so matches well and very much fits into the engine bay like it belongs!
Some say these were meant to or at least should have came from factory, and that may be the case but still - a relatively inexpensive and very cool mod to do that really spruces up the engine bay on the RS (or ST)!
There are variants of this mod available for the Ford Focus RS MK3 (and other Ford models) from other manufacturers as well that will do the same job of course, but none others look so OEM so in my book I say if you can get an original Ford part then go for it!
As always as well, purchasing them from SiCo Developments was spot on and I have always had good service from them!
The stock setup uses a simple post to prop up the bonnet which works of course but doesn't look so good if you want to show off your sweet engine bay at a meet or at a car show which these Ford bonnet struts do as they are completely unobtrusive being located at the rear sides of the bonnet. Also the bonnet struts make the stock setup obsolete so it can be removed (weight reduction bro!) and also you make other gains in the form of easier / quicker opening of the bonnet and you may have noticed that the stock prop tends to rub off the paint where it hooks into the bonnet so now you can do what I did (off camera) and paint in the area where it had flaked off and make my bonnet look nice and fresh again!
The installation is fairly easy and fast to get done with minimal tools and some thread locker blue for the bolt threads (Loctite is an obvious good option). One thing that ford do recommend is using a part number to protect some of the now exposed cavities. I don't know where to get this easily so I used some of my Hammerite Under Body Seal with added Waxoyl which will do the perfect job in its place and of course I already had this from the recent under body rust protection that I have been doing!

Definitely a better engineered solution than my aftermarket strut kit (although I have had it on there for 6 years and over 100k miles now and no issues whatsoever).

Does the hood have any vibration when it reaches full extension? This is a similar install to the NB Styling ones but I find theirs a tad too strong. Maybe I’ll switch to the Ford ones.

Not sure how I just now found this video. I was unaware ford made these! Trying to find them now here in the states and they pretty much don't exist. I would love to have a set of these for my mk3 ST.
You can buy the kit from this company, they’ll ship it here. However, there’s also kits from redline Tuning and Steeda, but these are the only ones I’ve seen that use a single nut and hook support for the hood mount. Much better than the dual nut ones imo. The issue is they don’t sell the exact kit in the video anymore, looks to be of a little cheaper quality parts, but the brackets remain the same, it seems. Also the shipping is outrageous, at least for me. $65 compared to everyone else in the UK only charging $27. What a crock haha

Not too expensive, I paid a bit less than £50. It works really well and has a few different functions and also comes with a 3/8 adaptor and a nice little hard case for storage

I don’t see why they wouldn’t. 16-18 are essentially the same body and color shouldn’t make a difference. : )

I bought some aftermarket ones that work well but were a nightmare to install in comparison. I wish I knew Ford made their own.....
Wow that is a LOT more complicated to fit than the Dark Ice Designs kit!
That may be so but this is also a much better design. the dark ice design is slightly compromised by its simplicity, specifically the angle of the ball end connection on the engine side. SiCo Developments make a version of the Ford struts that are even better

You made that look too easy!!! lol ... I found the plastic cowlings very fiddly and the hardest part was getting the ball joint throught the opening in each!! Once completed they do look great just a pity Ford didin't fit at factory as they were meant too!!
They were a bit fiddly to be fair yea, I did a bit of playing off camera to fully understand what was going on :)
Hi Adam. Robert here again. Can you tell me how long you waited for your bonnet struts? I emailed the company to ask if they could give me a dispatch day but not no reply. I then phoned the mobile number and left a message but again no reply so I sent a text and no reply. I phoned this morning and got voicemail. A little bit concerned here.

Hi Adam. They got back to me today. They had two sets delivered fromFord last week. They have more on order so it looks like I might have a long wait unfortunately and patience is not one of my strong points. ☹️
It's weird, I just got a delivery from SiCo today with a part that delayed due to covid. Covid could be causing the delay with the struts too, I know that I have an order with another company for a set of wheels that I have been told there is a 3-4 month delay on manufacturing because of covid so I just have to sit tight
Just had a great idea. Seeing as you are such an Irish gentleman I think you should take your struts off your car and send them to me so that I can put them on mine and when mine arrived I can send them to you. 😉
