The irony is that the Smothers Brothers themselves were a "mechaya" (a Yiddish word for something that brings life and joy to your soul).

Their musicianship alone makes them star quality. Their voices alone make them star quality. And funny on top of all that. A gift to comedy, to folk, to Americana culture. Hearing them is just one of those rare treats life throws us every once in a while.

They were ahead of their time. They were critical of politics and sympathetic to the emerging counterculture. We would love them today, but CBS fired them for it in 1969.

Not enough people know or remember how important the Smothers Brothers were in the late '60's. Yeah, they were funny (and their humor still holds up today) and musically talented, but they were also entertainment/television innovators. By challenging authority (both the federal government and their own network bosses) they reinvented what could be done with television and, it's fair to say, they helped stop a useless, nasty war.
They also brought us some great live rock and folk acts such as The Who and Buffalo Springfield, and helped launch some very notable careers like Rob Reiner and Steve Martin.
Also, not too many people seem to realize that Tommy, who played the bumbling fool in their act, was the driving force behind most of what they did. Tommy was driven and very, very smart -- not a guy to fuck with. When CBS cancelled their show in 1969 because the network thought it was too controversial, Tommy hauled them into federal court and, after a four year legal battle, won a huge settlement.

“The Smothers Brothers Show” was a 30-minute sitcom on Friday nights on CBS (1965-66) about Tommy who came back as an angel, sent by his angel supervisor named “Ralph” to keep his brother out of trouble. The show got canceled.
CBS then approached the Smothers Brothers to do a variety show on Sunday at 9pm, which was considered the graveyard time slot because it was up against “Bonanza” on NBC. So shows on that spot usually got cancelled mid-season like its predecessor, “The Gary Moore Show” just did.
Tommy agreed but not without demanding the two got paid up front first, knowing that CBS would use it’s assumed upcoming cancellation as an excuse to avoid paying them.
The show turned into a surprise hit.

My favorite version of this song has always been from the 1969 movie “Paint Your Wagon”, sung by Harve Presnell.
But, after hearing The Smothers Brothers version, the version in “Wagon” is now my second favorite version.

Such a 1960's feel to this clip. I will never forget the Smothers Brothers every Sunday night on CBS. Even by today's standards the Smothers Brothers were a class act unlike anything else.

They were excellent musicians and singers. But if that was all they were, nobody would remember them today. The comedy part made their act unique. Victor Borge was a world-class concert pianist, but he recognized that (relatively speaking) those are a dime a dozen. He made his mark with his blend of musical and comedic talents, and so did the Smothers Brothers.

    • @zoraidagarcia625
      @zoraidagarcia625 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

kurtzdt52-I agree with you completely. They were great singers and musicians, and their comedy was unique. People really enjoyed them, but how were not going these talented brothers to be underrated, if-as I read-they lost their program due to some political comment. Being so intelligent, I know that whatever they might have said, was a keen expression. However, those who think they lie so high, cannot stand the truth. They do not care to stop a more than promising, true artistic career. And don't forget about the Yoyo Ace.

By the way, I also think that there is something similar concerning the wonderful Ames Brothers, and with Ed as a soloist, the dear "Mingo" from Daniel Boone, although I don't know why. Ed Ames must appear on the list of the greatest singers ever. Find their music on TH-cam, with Ed both as part of the quartet and as a soloist. He also appears singing with Johnny Cash as his guest, and his version of Mariah is one of the first I ever heard. Besides, for whoever wants to hear great Christmas songs, you have The Ames Brothers to enjoy beauty and art. It is very easy to find them.

He has an insanely good ear, and even though he's only 52, he grew up listening to all kinds of music. He pauses for a minute, and I'm about to think he can't pull it off... finally he says Smothers Brothers. First try! I asked how he knew. He said at first he thought it was Peter, Paul, and Mary, but he didn't hear Mary, so he figured it was SM. That's how good they are! They started as quintets, quartets and trios doing folk songs in the 50's which is why they harmonize like honey. Tom said in an interview when he was in h.s. he would be called on to do a book report and would make the whole thing up as he went and the class would lol😂 and thats how the comedy came about. Dick and Tom grew up arguing with each other and thats where the rapport came based on those arguments they had as siblings. They put it all together and the Smothers Brothers were born. Hope I got those details right. Mesmerized hearing them sing and LOL at their comic timing and delivery. What an under-rated gem these two were and still are. ❤❤❤

The people in Holland were praying with this folk song. In the Old Testament, the land of Moriah in Israel was the location where God provided a ram caught in the bushes as Abraham’s faith was tested when he was asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac. God is the God who provides all that we need in his timing and his way. When Hollanders struggling they could sing their love song to the God who faithfully provided for them.

I'm not sure where they came up with that bit about it being a Dutch folk song. It was actually written in the 20th century for the musical "Paint Your Wagon". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Call_the_Wind_Maria

Great song...108 people must have thought the song was about Mariah Carey and were disappointed.
Terrific harmony, and they were as talented at singing as they were at comedy.

It is about Mariah Carey, sort of. She was named Mariah because of this song.

I was lucky enuf to actually see this show - live. At the time, the first thing that popped into my mind that these guys were very talented instrumentalists as well as really good singers, And as I recall it was the FIRST (and maybe the last?) sung respectfully without any comedy thrown in! Loved it.

tjlethal1121 Gotta disagree with ya bro. Harve Presnell’s version from the movie “Paint Your Wagon” is amazing. Though it was very nice to hear the Smothers Brothers just sing a song straight. They weren’t just very funny guys, they were real musicians too and it was great to get to see that side of them.

I have to say the Smothers Brothers turned it into a light folk song. I felt like I was listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary singing Irish folklore. Really beautiful rendition, it is my favorite.

By the way, the full title of this song is "They Call the Wind Maria." No h at the end of Maria, although it is pronounced with a long i. It is from the musical "Paint Your Wagon," and was written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe.

I was a kid when they were big, so I never really got how good they were at their singing. Now that I am old, I like their singing even better than their comedy.
